2023 Volvo Xc90 problems

volvo logo

The Volvo XC90 is a mid-size luxury SUV manufactured and marketed by Volvo Cars since 2002 and now in its second generation.

The first generation was introduced at the 2002 North American International Auto Show and used the Volvo P2 platform shared with the first generation Volvo S80 and other large Volvo cars. It was manufactured at Volvo's Torslandaverken. Volvo moved production equipment of the first generation to China and ended Swedish production at the end of 2014, renaming the car as the Volvo XC Classic (or Volvo XC90 Classic).

At the end of 2014, the second generation XC90 was introduced. It is based on a new global platform, the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA). Both generations of the XC90 have won Motor Trend's SUV of the Year award in their debuts.

In late 2022, the electric-only EX90 was introduced as the successor of the XC90.

Common 2023 Volvo Xc90 problems

The 2023 Volvo XC90 has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to its battery and module issues, as well as some concerns about reliability.

  • Reliability Concerns: The 2023 Volvo XC90 has been predicted to have lower reliability compared to other new cars in the market. This prediction is based on similar models and the Volvo brand's overall reliability scores. While Volvo is known for its safety and luxury features, some consumers have expressed concerns about the car's long-term durability and dependability, which can impact the overall ownership experience.
  • Recall Related to Brake Control Diagnostic Error: Volvo Car USA, LLC has issued a recall for certain 2023 S60, V60, V60CC, V90CC, XC60, XC90, XC40, and C40 vehicles due to a diagnostic error in the Brake Control Module. This issue can potentially affect the car's braking performance, which is a critical safety feature. Owners of affected vehicles should contact their Volvo dealership to schedule a repair as soon as possible.
  • Suspension Issues: Some owners have reported issues with the suspension system, particularly in regions where both spring and air suspension options were available . While most reviewers and owners found the air suspension to be more compliant, some have reported negative feedback. Air suspension problems can be more expensive to fix compared to traditional spring suspension systems.
  • Climate Control Issues: A few owners have reported issues with the climate control system, which can be easily detected by checking the motors' operation at full power and ensuring they provide hot or cold air as commanded . These issues can affect the comfort and convenience of the vehicle, particularly in extreme weather conditions.

In conclusion, the 2023 Volvo XC90 has several common problems that owners should be aware of, including battery and module issues, reliability concerns, recall-related problems, suspension issues, and climate control problems. While Volvo is known for its safety and luxury features, addressing these issues can significantly improve the overall ownership experience and ensure the car's long-term durability and dependability.

Negative 2023 Volvo Xc90 car reviews

  1. Aaron Steuber 2025-03-07

This car has experienced some issues with the backup camera and sensors, as well as the entertainment system screen. The trim around the vehicle was also faulty, but it has since been replaced. While Volvo has acknowledged that there is a software update coming in April, I believe that customers should not have to wait for a potential solution. As a luxury car with a price tag of over $80,000, it is reasonable to expect a high level of quality and performance. I have owned two previous new XC90s and have not experienced these issues before. Therefore, I am confident that these issues can be resolved and that this car can meet the high standards that customers expect from Volvo.

  2. Jordyn Hickle 2025-03-06

The car has some areas for improvement. While the NAV may not be the most useful, I find that using Google maps on my phone works well. The cruise control can be a bit inconsistent, but generally stays within a reasonable range of the set speed. Unfortunately, I have not been able to get the HUD to display much information beyond the cruise setting and speed limit. The 2” receiver is a clever feature, but it was too short for my bike rack and required some modification. Overall, I have had some minor issues with the car, but I am still exploring my options and considering other brands. On a side note, I did receive a one year service reminder, but had some difficulty scheduling an appointment with the dealer.

  3. Roy Grant 2025-03-01

If you're willing to recognize that 5 star reviews tend to be emotional and overhyped, you can then focus on objective feedback. This luxury SUV is very nice, made with lots of attention to detail and perfection, especially with the inscription package. The soft leather is great, and the handling is excellent. The power train is very clever and surprisingly spacious in the 2nd row, although the 3rd row is for kids only. The car is very 'soft footed' - it seems to want to roll down the road with a very sensitive, yet smooth power train. The AWD handles very well, on par with other performance cars. The MPGs are not bad for the weight of the car and the fact that there are 316 horses under the hood. It is worth noting that the insurance rates for this car are decent, at least as of July 2022. Now, with the praises aside, there are some things to consider. Volvo, in all their wisdom, does not allow you to start your car remotely unless you pay for their smartphone app. A 20K Honda allows you to precool or preheat your car, but Volvo will want you to pay extra to do the same. Additionally, the car software is far from smart. It does not store your driving profile (eco, dynamic, etc.) and resets it on every start, even though it manages to store every other aspect of your settings. It is bloated with garbage values that are tied to subscription such as weather etc that comes from Sirius XM. If you don't care to renew the subscription, you'll be left with many display items on the main screen that don't do much. Lastly, the car does not come with a printed manual. The online manual is a joke, and who the heck has the time to sit and try to figure out the manual uploaded into the center console? There is no such thing as a PDF you can print or use to learn about your car's features. You can order one for 55 bucks, but they seem to be 'out of stock for a while'. For a 70K car to not come with a manual -- that's a joke, it has to be.Last time I checked, even the most basic cars come with a printed reference manual, especially since there are many features on the car. Unfortunately, the online support from Volvo for this car is extremely disorganized. It can be difficult to determine which features and support apply to your car, as there is a division between 'early' and 'late' 2022 models. However, the website shows completely different configurations for the 2022 model than what you will find on the lot. Additionally, the 360 camera and rear view camera always start in the same view, with no way to default it to your preferred view for parking assistance. The FOBs button placement is also baffling and can be difficult to operate. The lane keeping 'pilot' can put your car too close to the left side of the lane, which can be uncomfortable and potentially dangerous. The sunroof switch controls both the shade and the sunroof, which can be a bit primitive and confusing. Furthermore, the car only allows for two profiles, which can be inconvenient for families with a third driver who has their own preferences. Lastly, there is limited storage space for small items such as sunglasses and coins. Despite these issues, we hope you will still enjoy your Volvo experience! This car does not have any coin slots due to the national coin shortage. Additionally, the steering wheel tilt and telescoping feature is manual and will not be stored with your driver profile. If you're test driving the car, it's important to pay attention to the road and wind noise. Volvo is transitioning to an electric company, which may affect parts availability for their gas models in the future. If you're considering a gas model, it's worth considering the direction of the company and how it may impact your resale or maintenance costs. While the resale value of this car is mediocre, it's important to keep in mind that this is true for most cars in this class. During your test drive, pay attention to these factors and decide if they will impact your overall satisfaction with the car. For me, I don't feel that the value is quite there, but it's still a solid option to consider.

  4. Henry Parker 2025-01-26

It's unfortunate that what was supposed to be a great car turned out to have some issues. At first, I was really happy with my purchase, but then I started experiencing some of the same problems that other reviewers have mentioned, such as battery and module issues. Unfortunately, I've had to leave the car at the service center three times for a total of almost two months due to difficulties getting parts. Since we don't live near the Volvo service center, this has caused some major inconvenience for us. Needless to say, we're disappointed with our experience and wish we had chosen a more reliable option to avoid these ongoing headaches.

  5. Eduardo Cummerata 2024-05-06

The air suspension can be unreliable at times, and there are some issues with the controls on the seats, as well as accessing the heat and air. The car may not feel as luxurious as expected, and there are some discomforts such as lack of storage space and cup holders. However, the Bowers and Wilkins stereo and massage seats are definite highlights. If you are considering this car, I would recommend taking it for a test drive to see how much it can hold. I do want to note that we have had some issues with this Volvo, and have contacted the company several times to resolve them. Our saleslady Sara has been wonderful and has documented everything, including videos. While the car may not always understand our commands and there have been some safety concerns, we are working with Volvo to address these issues. Overall, I still believe that Volvo is a safe and reliable brand, and I hope that our experience can help improve the car for future customers. The door on the driver's side turns off the vehicle when opened, which can be inconvenient. Additionally, the seats are uncomfortable and can cause discomfort during long drives. However, it is important to note that these issues may not be apparent until after driving the car for a while. It can also be frustrating when voice commands are not understood by Hey Google. Despite these challenges, it is worth noting that the car has many safety features that are important to me and my family. While there have been some issues with the steering, I have found that it performs well on certain roads. Overall, I believe that the 2023 Volvo is a good car with some room for improvement. It is important to do your research and test drive the car before making a purchase to ensure that it meets your needs and expectations.Volvo Financial has informed us that they are willing to take the car back and we would only need to pay them $18,000. While we will be taking a hit of $5,000 to $8,000, we are also losing the money we put down on the car and the equity in the car we traded in. Unfortunately, we have experienced some issues with the car such as the radio not turning on when the car starts, the air suspension going down after exiting the car, and the screens going black frequently. Additionally, the key fob and app have lost connection multiple times, which has required us to reset it with both keys while being in the car. In our opinion, the car is quite small with limited storage space and only 2 cup holders in the front and 2 in the second row that are not even big enough for a McDonald's drink. Although it was marketed as a minimalist and easy car for older people, it has not been very user-friendly. We appreciate Volvo Financial's willingness to work with us on this matter.

Positive 2023 Volvo Xc90 car reviews

  1. Kirk Mueller 2025-03-27

Took delivery 3 weeks ago after owning the 2016 XC90. I'm absolutely loving the new hybrid! It's much quieter and smoother than my 2016, even without air suspension. I'm especially thrilled with the Pure electric mode, which has allowed me to complete my 10 mile round trip work commute without using any gas for the entire three weeks of ownership. The new Google interface of the infotainment system is also a much-needed improvement over the old system. It's so much easier to use overall, with easy access to temperature controls and a vastly improved navigation system using Google Maps. Overall, I'm really impressed with the changes for 2023 and the plug-in hybrid option. It's a significant improvement over my previous 2016 XC90.

  2. Linwood Hickle 2025-01-14

Overall, I really like this vehicle, but I have had some trouble with the Pirelli tires. Unfortunately, this is the second vehicle I've owned that came with this brand of tires, and they have not lasted very long. I had to replace all four at just 25K miles. I believe there are better tires available that cost less and last longer. In my experience, these tires have not been very reliable.

  3. Gilbert Berge 2024-11-28

Traded in my Mercedes GLE 350 for it and couldn’t be happier! When driving around town, I typically average 80-100mpg. It’s even more comfortable, sportier, and more luxurious than either our previous GLE or BMW X5. I wouldn’t hesitate to buy another one.

  4. Harrison Prosacco 2024-10-05

You'll love the range on this car! It's perfect for a standard commute and drives like a dream.

  5. Pete Paucek 2024-09-24

I love the interior of the 2021 XC90 T8 Plug-In and how it handles! The blonde leather seats are absolutely gorgeous, and it has just the right amount of room to carry passengers without feeling too big. When I remember to plug it in, it gets an impressive 44 mpg. Although I have had some issues with the service department not answering their phones and difficulty getting it in for service, I still think it's a great car. I have had some electrical issues in the past 18 months, but I know Volvo is working on software updates to fix these issues. Overall, it's a gorgeous car with a lot of power and great gas mileage. I just wish the service department would be more responsive and the software problems would be fixed soon.
