2003 Volvo Xc90 problems
The Volvo XC90 is a mid-size luxury SUV manufactured and marketed by Volvo Cars since 2002 and now in its second generation.
The first generation was introduced at the 2002 North American International Auto Show and used the Volvo P2 platform shared with the first generation Volvo S80 and other large Volvo cars. It was manufactured at Volvo's Torslandaverken. Volvo moved production equipment of the first generation to China and ended Swedish production at the end of 2014, renaming the car as the Volvo XC Classic (or Volvo XC90 Classic).
At the end of 2014, the second generation XC90 was introduced. It is based on a new global platform, the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA). Both generations of the XC90 have won Motor Trend's SUV of the Year award in their debuts.
In late 2022, the electric-only EX90 was introduced as the successor of the XC90.

What is the major problem of Volvo XC90?

Are 2003 Volvo XC90 reliable?
Early XC90 reliability isn't flawless, but it's better in this respect than anything with a Range Rover badge and we'd take one over a Mercedes-Benz M-Class, too. Later examples of the Volvo are certainly better made, however, so you'd be wise to go for as young a car as your budget can afford.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2015-01-27
- VIN: YV1CM91H431
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: TRANSMISSION FAILED WITHOUT WARNING. HERE'S THE STORY, MY XC90 WAS DEALER SERVICED A WEEK AGO (PM), TOOK ON A SHORT ROAD TRIP OVER WEEKEND, FORTUNATELY MADE IT HOME BEFORE IT BROKE DOWN. WENT TO WORK UPON RETURNING FROM TRIP AND WHILE I WAS PARKING THE TRANSMISSION FAILED TO ENGAGE IN ANY GEAR. VERY UNSAFE! NO WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATED AND THERE WAS NO 'LIMP MODE.' THE RPMS ROSE AS IF IT WERE IN NEUTRAL. COULD HEAR A METALLIC RATTLING NOISE COMING FROM TRANSMISSION. HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED FROM WORK TO AAMCO. AAMCO STATED THE DAMAGE WAS INSIDE OF TRANSMISSION AND THEY WOULD NEED TO REMOVE AND TEAR DOWN TO SEE WHAT ISSUE IS, BUT MORE THAN LIKELY IT WAS A COMPLETE FAILURE. I JUST BOUGHT THIS CAR IN NOVEMBER AND LUCKILY BOUGHT AN AFTERMARKET WARRANTY THAT 'SHOULD' COVER EVERYTHING. ISSUE IS THE WARRANTY COMPANY WILL MORE THAN LIKELY JUST REPLACE IT WITH A USED TRANS THAT WILL FAIL IN A SHORT TIME AND I WILL HAVE TO GO THROUGH THIS AGAIN. THIS IS A MAJOR DESIGN FLAW ON THE PART OF VOLVO AND THEY SHOULD OWN UP TO IT. THE ENGINE PRODUCES TOO MUCH POWER AND THE VEHICLE IS TOO HEAVY FOR THE TRANSMISSION TO TAKE IT. THIS IS A T6 BTW, WITH THE 6 CYLINDER AND TWIN TURBO. VOLVO SHOULD HAVE A RECALL ON THIS TRANSMISSION. I HAVE SCOURED THE WEB AND SEE THIS IS AN ONGOING FREQUENT ISSUE WITH THE XC90 AND VOLVO IS LOSING WHAT WERE ONCE LOYAL CUSTOMERS. SEARCH THIS ISSUE ON THE WEB AND YOU'LL WONDER IF THERE ARE ANY XC90'S THAT DO NOT HAVE TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS. *TR

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2010-12-29
- VIN: YV1CZ91H531
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: I PURCHASE A USED VOLVO XC90 ON 12/17/2010 FOR MY SON WITH A REGISTERED 104,555 MILES. ON 12/29/2010 THE TRANSMISSION WENT OUT. I GOT A COUPLE DIFFERENT ESTIMATES FROM $5,000 TO $7,000 TO REPAIR OR REPLACE. AFTER DISCUSSING WITH THE AUTOMOTIVE TECHNICIAN, I FOUND OUT THAT VOLVO HAS HAD A SLEW OF PROBLEMS RELATING TO THE 03,04 & 05 XC90 ESPECIALLY WITH TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS. I WAS TOTALLY DISAPPOINTED BECAUSE I PURCHASE THIS VEHICLE BASED ON VOLVO REPUTATION AND THE CAR RELIABILITY AND DUE TO THE FACT THAT I HAVE A 2000 VOLVO S80 AND HAVE HAD IT SINCE 2000 AND HAVE HAD FEW PROBLEMS. ALTHOUGH, MY SON WANTED TO PURCHASE ANOTHER VEHICLE, I STEERED HIM TOWARDS THE VOLVO. THINKING THAT SINCE A VEHICLE (ESPECIALLY A VOLVO) SHOULDN'T EXPERIENCE THIS TYPE OF TRANSMISSION PROBLEM WITH RELATIVELY LOW MILEAGE, I CONTACTED VOLVO NORTH AMERICA AND TOLD THEM OF MY PLIGHT AND REQUESTED THAT THEY PAY FOR THE REPAIR OR AT LEAST PAY FOR A PORTION OF THE REPAIR AND THEY FLATLY DENIED MY REQUEST. I AM TOTALLY DISAPPOINTED IN VOLVO FOR NOT HONORING AND STANDING BEHIND THEIR PRODUCT, REMEMBER I BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE BASED ON THEIR REPUTATION FOR BUILDING A SOUND REPUTABLE VEHICLE, ALTHOUGH MY SON WANTED TO PURCHASE ANOTHER VEHICLE. MY CONFIDENCE IN THIS COMPANY HAS BEEN TOTALLY SHATTERED. AND TO THINK THAT I WAS PLANNING ON REPLACING MY 2000 S80 WITH ANOTHER VOLVO THIS SUMMER. *TR

I've had the pleasure of driving both the 2.5T and T6 and I must say, I was thoroughly impressed. The vehicles were incredibly comfortable, with ample leg and elbow room for even my 6-foot frame. The T6 has a sports car-like zoom at highway speeds, while the 2.5T feels like a rocket ship off the line. At around 30mph, the T6 really dominates and runs away, but the 2.5T feels more sporty. The ride was smooth as silk in both vehicles. It's truly amazing how spacious the car is inside, yet it drives and responds almost like a sports sedan.

This SUV is one of the great SUVs out there. Its roll-over protection is unbelievable and it takes corners nicely. As a luxury car, I have no complaints about this SUV. I have owned a BMW X5 and its seats and ride were a nightmare.

I really enjoyed driving this SUV! I've tried out a few others like the x5 (which felt all over the road) and the Acura MDX (which was a bit too stiff), but this one really stood out to me. I'm so excited to get my own, although it seems like there's quite a long waiting list.

I just got the XC90 about a week ago and it's such a great car. The phenomenal interior and exterior design have left all my friends at school very impressed. It seems that Volvo can definitely appeal to a younger crowd.

Traded a 2000 Suburban on the XC90. It's been a fantastic vehicle so far and my wife, our 3 children (7, 4, and 3), and I have enjoyed every mile in it. We've found it to be very comfortable without any compromise. Everywhere we go, people stop and look at the car and often give us compliments. Based on our personal experience, I would highly recommend this car over a Suburban or an Expedition.

My XC90 has had several issues, including the carpet falling down in the front seat, unattached outside window trim, and problems with the braking system such as loud noise and exhaust entering the car. Additionally, the anti-skid warning light kept coming on and the trim around the lock came off when unlocking the front door. Despite repeated trips to the dealership, the issues were not resolved. However, I am confident that I will find a suitable solution for my transportation needs.

We purchased our XC90 used, fully aware that it had a few issues that needed fixing. Unfortunately, we were mistaken in thinking that the discount of buying it used would offset the cost of repairs. We have had to make multiple trips to the Volvo dealership for engine light issues, door seal leaks, transmission seal leaks, brake master cylinder leak/failure, and several other small engine repairs. We have even given the check engine light the nickname of the

Although I have experienced some issues with this vehicle's workmanship, I have taken the necessary steps to address them. I have had several components replaced, including the wheel hub, rear shocks, front sway bar, 2 rear sway bars, turbo boost valve, front cupholder, floor mat tensioners, and front brakes. While the tire performance has not met my expectations, I remain committed to finding a solution. Overall, I still have a fondness for this car and will continue to work towards improving its performance.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I noticed that you've had a lot of experience with cars, and I was wondering if you could help me out. I've been having some trouble with my car lately, and I was hoping you could give me some advice. I've noticed that the maintenance costs are quite high, and I've already gone through three sets of tires with only 56,000 miles. The dealership recommended some tires, but they didn't last very long. I'm thinking of trying out the GoodYear Assurance ComforTred tires for my next set. I also had some issues with the power steering and front end suspension, but the service department was able to fix them after a few years. I was just wondering if you had any tips for me on how to keep my car running smoothly. Thanks so much!

We've experienced a number of service issues with our Volvo. The manufacturer has explained that this is due to it being the first year of this particular model. Unfortunately, we have had ongoing problems with the alignment, which requires realignment every 3-6K miles, and the tires wear out quickly, needing replacement every 10-12K miles. It seems that every time we have something fixed, a new issue arises within 500 miles of driving. We have also had to replace several parts prematurely, such as the rear shocks, bearings, and brake pads. In addition, there have been some minor problems, such as a strange smell from the HVAC and radio malfunctions. Despite these issues, we remain hopeful that the vehicle will improve with time and proper maintenance.
