2013 Volvo Xc90 problems
The Volvo XC90 is a mid-size luxury SUV manufactured and marketed by Volvo Cars since 2002 and now in its second generation.
The first generation was introduced at the 2002 North American International Auto Show and used the Volvo P2 platform shared with the first generation Volvo S80 and other large Volvo cars. It was manufactured at Volvo's Torslandaverken. Volvo moved production equipment of the first generation to China and ended Swedish production at the end of 2014, renaming the car as the Volvo XC Classic (or Volvo XC90 Classic).
At the end of 2014, the second generation XC90 was introduced. It is based on a new global platform, the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA). Both generations of the XC90 have won Motor Trend's SUV of the Year award in their debuts.
In late 2022, the electric-only EX90 was introduced as the successor of the XC90.

Common 2013 Volvo Xc90 problems
Based on the complaints from owners of the Volvo XC90 2013, several common problems have been reported. Here is a detailed list of these issues:
- Water Leaks: Some owners have reported inadequate sealing of the windshield, roof rails, or other components, leading to water leaks and collection within the cabin. This can be caused by a faulty windshield seal, misaligned doors, or issues with the sunroof drainage system. Signs of water leaks include dampness, mildew, or pooled water in the footwell carpeting. It is crucial to check for moisture, dampness, and water staining in the interior carpeting and beneath the cargo area floor to avoid potential damage and costly repairs.
- Gearbox Problems: A few owners have experienced gearbox issues at relatively low mileages, particularly less than 30,000 miles. It is essential to be cautious when encountering gearbox problems, as they can lead to significant repair costs and affect the vehicle's performance.
- Injector Failures: Diesel models of the XC90 may encounter injector failures, which can result in starting issues. Repairing injector problems can be expensive, costing around £1200. If a diesel XC90 shows signs of reluctance to start, it is advisable to proceed with caution or consider alternative options to avoid potential repair costs.
- Recalls and Safety Concerns: Throughout its production, the XC90 was subject to several recalls. It is crucial for prospective buyers to check if any recalls are relevant to the specific model they are considering and ensure that any necessary recall work has been completed. Safety-related recalls, such as steering failures, highlight the importance of addressing potential issues promptly to maintain the vehicle's safety and reliability.
By being aware of these common problems reported by owners of the Volvo XC90 2013, prospective buyers can make informed decisions and take necessary precautions to address or prevent these issues, ensuring a smoother ownership experience.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-03-15
- VIN: YV4952CZXD1
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: MY VEHICLE'S AIR BAG LIGHT IS ON. MY DASH MESSAGE IS: PASSENGER AIRBAG OFF SERVICE URGENT. I TOOK IT TO KOONS VOLVO OF OWINGS MILLS, INC TO BE SERVICED. I WAS TOLD THAT THE PASSENGER OCCUPANCY WEIGHT SENSOR HAS STOPPED WORKING AND NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE SERVICE TECHNICIAN COULD NOT TELL ME WHY IT WOULD HAVE STOPPED WORKING. HE JUST SAID IT COULD JUST HAPPEN. I ASKED THE SERVICE TECHNICIAN WHAT DOES IT DO AND HE SAID THAT IT WEIGHS PASSENGERS FOR THE CORRECT PRESSURE OF THE AIRBAG IN CASE IT IS DEPLOYED. HE ALSO SAID THAT MY COMPLETE AIRBAG SYSTEM WILL NOT WORK WITHOUT IT WHICH MEANS THAT THE DRIVER'S SIDE AS WELL AS THE SIDE AIRBAGS WILL NOT DEPLOY IN CASE OF AN ACCIDENT. THE COST OF THIS REPAIR IS $2,249 WHICH IS EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE. THIS APPEARS TO BE MORE OF A DEFECT AND NOT WEAR AND TEAR. VOLVO ADVERTISES IT'S SAFETY FEATURES WHICH ATTRACTED ME TO PURCHASE ONE. THEY DON'T TELL YOU THAT THE SAFETY FEATURES MAY NOT WORK WHEN YOU NEED THEM. I WAS TOLD BY ANOTHER SERVICE STATION IN ALEXANDRIA, VA THAT THIS IS A COMMON REPAIR THAT HE PERFORMS ON VOLVOS. I SAW THE AIRBAG LIGHT ONE MORNING WHEN I TURNED ON THE CAR AFTER IT HAD BEEN SITTING OVERNIGHT. NO ONE WAS IN THE PASSENGER SEAT. IT WAS NOT THERE THE NIGHT BEFORE.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM

- Summary: I AM THE SECOND OWNER OF THIS CAR THE OTHER OWNER WAS IN THE FAMILY AND THE AIRBAGS HAVE NEVER BEEN DEPLOYED. A COUPLE MONTHS AGO THE SRS AIRBAG SERVICE URGENT LIGHT CAME ON AND WE TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP TO HAVE IT LOOKED AT. THEY SAID THAT THE AIRBAGS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. BEING THAT THIS IS SUCH A CRUCIAL COMPONENT THAT SHOULD BE WORKING IF IT HAS NEVER BEEN USED I WANTED TO ALERT NHTSA AND SEE IF IT WERE A MORE WIDESPREAD CONCERN. I APPRECIATE YOU LOOKING INTO THIS. THERE WERE NO EVENTS LEADING UP TO THE AIRBAG LIGHT AND THAT IS THE REASON FOR MY CONCERN.
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-01-15
- VIN: YV4952CF7D1

- Fire: 1
- VIN: YV4952CZ9D1
- Components: AIR BAGS,STRUCTURE,ENGINE
- Summary: HAVING BOUGHT A 2013 VOLVO XC90 WITH 36K MILES ON IT, I WAS DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY 2 WEEKS LATER WHEN I SAW SMOKE COMING OUT OF THE ENGINE. THE ENGINE STALLED AND SHUT DOWN. I QUICKLY PULLED OVER THE CAR AND WAS ABLE TO GET OUT AS THE SMOKE WAS INCREASING. WITHIN 4-5 MINUTES, THE CAR WAS ON FIRE. IT WAS COMPLETELY GUTTED AND DESTROYED. VOLVO DECLINED TO ACCEPT BLAME AND SAID THAT THE CAUSE OF FIRE CANNOT BE DETERMINED. THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE THE SAFEST CAR AND I WAS SURPRISED AT THEIR CALLOUS ATTITUDE. THE DEALER FROM SUMMIT NJ WAS FAR MORE PROFESSIONAL. THE HIGHWAY IT HAPPENED ON WAS RT. 295 NEAR PRINCETON NJ. I HOPE OTHERS CAN LEARN FROM THIS DEBACLE AND GET SOME HELP IF THERE IS A FUNDAMENTAL PROBLEM WITH 2013 XC90. THEY DID HAVE A RECALL FOR THE 2010 XC90 FOR THE SAME REASON. I FEEL THE CAUSE WAS EITHER AN ELECTRICAL SHORT CIRCUIT OR A PROBLEM WITH TRANSMISSION.

Great so far!! No issues

Out of the ML350, Q5, MDX, RX350 and X5, we ultimately chose the XC90 because my wife loved it the most. It had the best overall visibility and we've been driving it for almost 4 months now without any issues. While the fuel mileage isn't great at 14 in town and 21 on the road, it's competitive with most of the other vehicles in its class. Plus, it's worth noting that the XC-90 is the least expensive option, which is definitely a bonus.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share some details about my car that I think you might be interested in. It's been well-maintained with a never-overheated radiator, all new plastic coolant pipes, hoses, and expansion tank, and a new water pump. The power steering pump and fluid reservoir are very quiet, and the steering rack has been replaced with an OEM part. I've also upgraded the tie rods, struts, control arms, stabilizers, and bearings, and added IPD subframe bushing blocks. The motor mounts have all been replaced with modified torque rods, and I've installed new catalytic converters, a Helmholtz Resonator with a stock R design muffler, and coil packs with OEM Volvo plugs. The car also has new CV axles, IPD spring seats with new cold coiled springs, and Febi ball joints. I've replaced the manifold pressure sensor, intake manifold gaskets, oil separator diaphragm and gasket, and dipstick and fill cap O rings. The alternator has an upgraded slip clutch, and I've replaced the AC drier expansion valve and condenser, blower motor with resistor, and heater core with an OEM Behr upgraded LED tail lights and LED headlights. The car also has yellow fog lights, a back-up camera, and reverse radar, and I've removed the 130mph speed governor with a VDASH subscription. The car is a smooth and comfortable ride at 110mph, but I've noticed some instability at around 118mph due to the ride height. The car has only 2000k highway miles and has always been maintained with Castrol GTX conventional motor oil. The timing chain is dead quiet. All of the work has been done by me under the supervision of master Volvo mechanic and yacht racing champion, Leo Gabriels of Gabriel's imports Ojai. I'm open to reasonable offers, though I understand that the car may be worth more to me than to others. Let me know if you're interested!

Overall, this was a great car. As a single mom and soccer mom, I found it to be very practical. We used it for traveling and living every day. It had rear entertainment, third-row seating, heated front seats, and a bench middle seat that could all be folded flat to carry snowboards, bikes, camping gear, and more. Although I wasn't a fan of the middle and third-row seats, which sat straight up and had no back reclining, there were plenty of compartments for storage. Unfortunately, the resale value, parts, and overall value are quite poor. Recently, a gentleman was texting and driving and ran into my Volvo while I was at a complete stop. The insurance company is already saying that the vehicle will probably be a total loss due to its age and the mileage my son and I put on it while living on the road. I'm not looking forward to the worst-case scenario of this vehicle accident. According to the Black Book, the value of the Volvo is around $3,000 to $5,000. We all know that I'll be losing out, as it will be difficult to find a used car with all the features that my Volvo had for the same price.

I'm so glad to hear that you and your wife are enjoying your 2012 XC90! It sounds like you made a thoughtful decision when choosing an SUV that could accommodate your five local grandchildren. I'm also happy to hear that the performance has exceeded your expectations, especially with the 7-speed automatic transmission. It seems like the XC90 has everything you need in terms of value, space, engineering, and performance.

My wife and I purchased our Volvo XC90 while living in the UK, but since we were returning to the US within a year, we had the vehicle built to US specifications. When it comes to safety, the vehicle is 100% safe for the first 36K miles. However, my wife and I have had to replace the driver's side seatbelt twice, which suggests that Volvo may have cut corners on some unseen components. I have never had to replace a seatbelt, and I have owned cars with 190K miles that still had their original factory seatbelts. Additionally, the AC system failed on my wife's car with less than 36K miles and no warning. Fortunately, our vehicle was still under warranty. I was surprised to find that the car has manual lumbar support, which seems outdated for a 2011 model. I would not recommend purchasing this vehicle used; it is best to buy new with a warranty. If you plan on keeping the car long-term, make sure to maintain the warranty and have a maintenance package. The level of technology in this vehicle is weak compared to other 2011 models. Volvo attempted to make a significant leap with their new XC-90, which I have driven, but the infotainment system was a tech blunder. Overall, I believe that Volvo is trying to save money by making subtle changes to current models, but they are trying to make big leaps when they redesign their vehicles, which introduces too many changes in one package and creates too many potential problems. Additionally, support for Volvo along the Gulf Coast is limited, with only two dealerships in my area, both of which are more than 30 minutes away. I would not recommend purchasing this vehicle if your nearest dealership is more than an hour away, as it will be costly to have it serviced. It is best to avoid third-party repair shops or parts. Thank you for reading. At this point, my wife and I have owned this car for 9 years and it has 66000 miles on it. Despite its age, I would still give it a three-star rating. However, there have been some additional issues since my last review. The passenger side BLIS sensor constantly gives false indications or the whole system locks up when the vehicle is first started up. The moonroof cover is no longer connected to the track it was in, even though my wife and I have rarely used the moonroof. The headliner up by the windshield has started to delaminate. This is a 2011 vehicle and my 1997 Eddie Bauer's headliner stayed intact the whole time we had it, and we bought that in 2003. The only reason why I got rid of the Ford was because it had 200K miles and major parts were starting to fail. Also, the AC system has never been the same since the time it went out. The receiver for the driver's side seatbelt has also started having issues with locking in the belt. In short, I would not recommend buying this body style Volvo, no matter what price the dealer is offering it to you at. You'll end up spending more money on keeping it running and in decent condition than the monthly payment, unless you buy it outright. I think they stopped making this version of the XC-90 around 2015. On another note, I would advise against buying a new Volvo XC-90 until they put manual AC controls on the dash again because everything is under the iPad menus right now. I know it sounds silly, but if you live somewhere outside of Europe where you have blistering hot summers, you need backup controls for your AC just in case the iPad display fails. And yes, iPads do fail, and they are even more likely to fail if you can't park your car in a garage when you aren't using it. This vehicle is not worth the money as used or certified pre-owned. In short, I would recommend staying away from these XC-90s.

I purchased my Volvo XC90 brand new and have been the proud owner for over two years now. Unfortunately, I have been experiencing an issue with the A/C. Whenever I turn it on, there is a bad mold smell for the first 30 seconds, but thankfully it goes away afterwards. I have reported this issue to the dealer on four separate occasions, but despite their efforts, the problem still persists. Recently, at 58,000 miles, I was surprised to see a 'Low Oil Level' warning appear. Upon checking the dipstick, I found that the oil level was below the minimum. The dealer checked for oil leaks but found none, and suggested that the previous oil change may not have added enough oil. They also mentioned that it is normal for Volvos to consume some oil between services. I will keep an eye on the oil level to ensure there are no further issues.

I am confident in my experience with cars and can say that the 2010 XC90 3.2 is a reliable and comfortable vehicle with a great style. Despite owning it for 6 years and garage keeping it, I unfortunately encountered an issue with the rear differential bearing at 71K miles. While this is a rare occurrence, I have had a similar issue with my Land Rover LR2 2010, which was replaced by the dealer at 36K miles. It is important to note that the Land Rover and Volvo share the same drive parts, which are Ford parts. Despite this setback, I remain confident in the quality of my Volvo and its overall reliability.

I bought this car because of its superior safety rating, as I have two young children and wanted them to learn to drive in city traffic safely. The car has done its job in protecting my children, and I am grateful for that. Although the dashboard and functionality were outdated when I purchased it, my focus was on safety. I informed the salesman that my only two criteria for an XC90 were that the car be white and have a navigation system. Unfortunately, the navigation system has not been working consistently, and despite taking the car to the dealer for software updates six times in one year, the issue has not been resolved. Volvo has informed me that they are unable to fix the software and have offered me incentives to trade in the car for a new one. While the dealer cannot offer more, it is disappointing that Volvo has chosen not to support their product by hiring a software engineer to find and fix the bug. As a Volvo owner, I expected high standards of satisfaction and pride, but unfortunately, I am neither satisfied nor proud. I had the option to purchase any SUV with a third row seat for my family, but I chose this Volvo as my first one because of the company's reputation and my research indicating that they were a solid company that stood behind their products. Unfortunately, I have had some issues with the navigation system, which is the only upgrade option that I requested. While I am disappointed with this, I must say that the vehicle itself has worked fine mechanically. Although I have owned vehicles from other manufacturers in the past, I have never run into a problem with maintenance or repair. I am hopeful that the manufacturer will provide better support in the future. Despite this experience, I am not completely dissatisfied with the vehicle and would consider purchasing from Volvo again in the future.

I bought this car mainly because of its price compared to its competitors. With the included 5 years of service, it's unbeatable. This particular model came with every option, including BLIS, Xenon, DVD's, Navigation, and more. However, I found the Navigation system to be a bit difficult to use and would probably skip it if I had to do it again. Despite this, the car still meets our needs and is rated as 'just good enough'. It's worth noting that this is the only car I own that still uses a traditional key instead of a proximity token with push button start.
