2010 Volvo Xc90 problems
The Volvo XC90 is a mid-size luxury SUV manufactured and marketed by Volvo Cars since 2002 and now in its second generation.
The first generation was introduced at the 2002 North American International Auto Show and used the Volvo P2 platform shared with the first generation Volvo S80 and other large Volvo cars. It was manufactured at Volvo's Torslandaverken. Volvo moved production equipment of the first generation to China and ended Swedish production at the end of 2014, renaming the car as the Volvo XC Classic (or Volvo XC90 Classic).
At the end of 2014, the second generation XC90 was introduced. It is based on a new global platform, the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA). Both generations of the XC90 have won Motor Trend's SUV of the Year award in their debuts.
In late 2022, the electric-only EX90 was introduced as the successor of the XC90.

Common 2010 Volvo Xc90 problems
The Volvo XC90, first manufactured in 2002, has been a popular luxury SUV option for many years. However, some years have been more problematic than others. Here are some common problems with the Volvo XC90, specifically the 2010 model, based on complaints from owners:
- Intercooler issues: It is recommended to check the intercooler for oily deposits around the bottom of the radiator, as this may indicate a problem with the engine.
- Tyre wear: Wearing out the inside edge of the front tyres is common and a sign of incorrect tracking and/or worn suspension bushes. Checking the tyres carefully for even wear is essential to ensure the car is safe to drive.
- Brakes: The XC90 is a heavy car and is hard on brakes. Applying moderate braking from about 40mph with hands loosely on the steering wheel should result in the car stopping in a straight line with no judder.
- Gearbox problems: Some owners have reported gearbox problems at relatively low mileages (less than 30,000). The injectors on the diesels also fail sometimes, which can cost £1200 to fix. If a diesel XC90 is reluctant to start, it is recommended to walk away.
- Recalls: The XC90 was subject to quite a few recalls, and it is essential to check if any of these are relevant to the model you’re buying and if the work has been carried out.
While the Volvo XC90 is generally a reliable car, it is essential to be aware of these common problems, especially if you are considering purchasing a used model. Regular servicing and checking the car over carefully before buying can help ensure that you are making a wise investment.

I got this car for my wife and we did the European delivery program which was amazing. I highly recommend it! I've owned many Volvos and this one is the best so far. The only issue I've had is that the plastic molding on the right middle pillar rattles over bumpy roads and the interior materials could be more up to date. If you opt for the 3.2, I suggest getting AWD as it greatly improves the driving experience. Overall, it's a great car!
-
Hi there! I noticed that the room you're interested in doesn't have much space and the headrests are a bit difficult to move. Just wanted to give you a heads up!
-
Overall, I think this is one of the best values in the luxury SUV market, especially for a 7-seater. It's also one of the better-looking SUVs out there, even if it's an older design.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share some details about my car that I think you might be interested in. It's been well-maintained with a never-overheated radiator, all new plastic coolant pipes, hoses, and expansion tank, and a new water pump. The power steering pump and fluid reservoir are very quiet, and the steering rack has been replaced with an OEM part. I've also upgraded the tie rods, struts, control arms, stabilizers, and bearings, and added IPD subframe bushing blocks. The motor mounts have all been replaced with modified torque rods, and I've installed new catalytic converters, a Helmholtz Resonator with a stock R design muffler, and coil packs with OEM Volvo plugs. The car also has new CV axles, spring seats with new cold coiled springs, ball joints, and a manifold pressure sensor. I've replaced the intake manifold gaskets, oil separator diaphragm and gasket, and dipstick and fill cap O rings. The alternator has an upgraded slip clutch, and I've added a new AC drier expansion valve and condenser, blower motor with resistor, and heater core OEM Behr. The car also has upgraded LED tail lights and LED headlights, yellow fog lights, a back-up camera, and reverse radar. I've removed the 130mph speed governor with a VDASH subscription, and the car has a smooth and comfortable 110mph cruise. The ride height can cause instability at about 118mph. The car has 2000k highway miles and has always been maintained with Castrol GTX conventional motor oil. The timing chain is dead quiet. All work has been done by me under the supervision of master Volvo mechanic, yacht racing champion, and all-around pain in the ass Leo Gabriels of Gabriel's imports Ojai. I'm open to reasonable offers, though I'm pretty sure it's worth more to me than any person of sound mind could offer.

Out of the ML350, Q5, MDX, RX350 and X5, we ultimately chose the XC90 because my wife loved it the most. It had the best overall visibility and we've been driving it for almost 4 months now without any issues. While the fuel mileage isn't great at 14 in town and 21 on the road, it's competitive with most of the other vehicles in its class. Plus, it's a real bonus that the XC-90 is the least expensive of the bunch and uses regular fuel instead of premium.

Nice vehicle! Although the 3rd row is not really meant for adults and there is not a ton of luggage space, it drives like a tank and my wife loves it. It has a heavy feel to it when you drive it, but that makes her feel very safe. While it could use some more power steering help and can be a bit sluggish when accelerating, overall it's a great car.

I am confident in my experience with cars and can say that the 2010 XC90 3.2 is a reliable and comfortable vehicle with a great style. Despite owning it for 6 years and driving it for 71K miles, I have never had any issues with the rear differential until now. It is important to note that I have owned many cars and have never had issues with rear differentials, except for my Land Rover LR2 2010, which was replaced by the dealer at 36K miles. I made the mistake of purchasing a Land Rover because it had the same drive parts as my Volvo, but it turned out to be a Ford part. Overall, I am confident in the quality of my Volvo and its parts.

We recently purchased a car through the military program and were excited to receive it fully loaded. Unfortunately, we experienced some issues with the BLIS system and had to take it to the shop shortly after receiving it. Although the mirror was not properly attached when we got it back, the dealership was able to fix it for us. However, we did encounter another problem when the DVD player stopped working just three months later. When we brought it in for repairs, we were informed that there was a recall and the car could not be taken off the lot. While this was frustrating, we understand the importance of safety recalls. We were disappointed to find out that our headphones were lost and the car was not cleaned properly when we picked it up. We requested that the dealership clean it, but were told that we would have to pay for it. Overall, we have had some challenges with this 6-month-old car, but we remain hopeful that the dealership will work with us to resolve these issues.

I purchased my Volvo XC90 brand new and have been the proud owner for over two years now. Unfortunately, I have been experiencing an issue with the A/C. Whenever I turn it on, there is a bad mold smell for the first 30 seconds, but thankfully it goes away afterwards. I have reported this issue to the dealer on four separate occasions, but despite their efforts, the problem still persists. Recently, at 58,000 miles, I was surprised to see a 'Low Oil Level' warning appear. Upon checking the dipstick, I found that the oil level was below the minimum. The dealer checked for oil leaks but found none, and suggested that the previous oil change may not have added enough oil. They also mentioned that it is normal for Volvos to consume some oil between services. I will keep an eye on the oil level to ensure there are no further issues.

The XC90 looks beautiful! While it may not be the most comfortable car to drive in, it still has its perks. Although there's not too much room in the front for the driver and passenger, it's still a great car to drive. I did have some issues with it, such as needing a wheel alignment at 14,000 miles which unfortunately wasn't covered. Additionally, I had some problems with the driver's side chair and the indicator lights going off on the dashboard for no apparent reason. However, after one year, I'm looking to trade the vehicle in for an SUV that gets better gas mileage. This SUV consumes gas like I consume beer!
