2014 Volvo Xc90 problems

The Volvo XC90 is a mid-size luxury SUV manufactured and marketed by Volvo Cars since 2002 and now in its second generation.
The first generation was introduced at the 2002 North American International Auto Show and used the Volvo P2 platform shared with the first generation Volvo S80 and other large Volvo cars. It was manufactured at Volvo's Torslandaverken. Volvo moved production equipment of the first generation to China and ended Swedish production at the end of 2014, renaming the car as the Volvo XC Classic (or Volvo XC90 Classic).
At the end of 2014, the second generation XC90 was introduced. It is based on a new global platform, the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA). Both generations of the XC90 have won Motor Trend's SUV of the Year award in their debuts.
In late 2022, the electric-only EX90 was introduced as the successor of the XC90.

I've owned a 2004, 2007, and now a 2010 Volvo XC90, and I must say, my 2010 Executive Model is the best one yet! The interior is outstanding, it feels like I'm sitting in my family room. The handling is tight and feels like a sport car within an SUV. The safety features are a plus when insurance premiums are due. I highly recommend this vehicle to anyone who appreciates quality, sporty driving, and head-turning styling. It's a perfect vehicle in my book!

I recently purchased my leased XC90. I couldn't part ways with it. It's been extremely reliable and I highly recommend it.

I've had the car for about 8 months now. Unfortunately, the brakes started squeaking within a couple of months of purchase, which was disappointing since I had replaced a minivan with very squeaky brakes. Although I have taken it to the shop a couple of times, the issue has not been resolved yet. On the bright side, the V8 engine is great and provides a lot of power. However, I would not recommend the navigation package as it has not been very helpful. While the real-time traffic feature is useful, the system struggles to locate big retail stores without an exact address. Have any of you experienced the buzzing sound in the speakers? I am still trying to figure out what that is. Overall, I have found this car to be good, fun, and safe to drive around.

I've owned this SUV for a few months now and I haven't had any problems. Although, I would like to see better technology in this car such as a modern navigation system and stereo. The safe and sound warranty is great as it covers all services including oil changes, brake rotors, wear and tear, etc. (except for tires) for 5 years/60k. While 91 octane is recommended, it can be hard to find, so I use 93. You can use 87, but I notice a lack of power with the 3.2 engine. Overall, I absolutely love this SUV. It looks sharp and feels safe. I should note that there are no new designs in the works until 2012.

I purchased this vehicle through military/diplomatic sales in Bahrain and it exceeded my expectations. Although there were some disappointments, such as the vehicle being delivered to DC/VA almost four/five weeks behind schedule and with the wrong interior color (calcite seats...ouch...), I am still pleased with my purchase. Despite the speakers making a weird bzzzz sound, I installed a Bluetooth and portable 'Garmin for Volvo' navigation system, both of which I am happy with. The portable navsystem is especially useful as it can be used with other vehicles, saving you money when you rent on vacation. I appreciate how well it handles the bumpy DC/VA roads and that there are no blind spots like in other SUVs. Additionally, the free service plan on 2010 models is a major perk!

After owning a minivan for a decade, my family and I decided it was time for a change. We searched for a 7-seater SUV and ultimately chose the XC90. I am writing this review after 6 months of driving and I must say, the XC90 has exceeded our expectations. Although the design may be considered old, it still looks great. The ride is comfortable and the seats are very cozy. I feel extremely secure while driving the XC90. While the engine may not be the most refined and the gas mileage is not great, it is still adequate for a 4700lbs vehicle. Overall, the XC90 is not a fancy or fast SUV, but it is a solidly built vehicle that I would highly recommend.

After looking at a range of cars from the 4 Runner to the Range Rover Sport, we finally settled on the XC90. We are happy to say that it met our expectations. While it may not be the flashiest vehicle, it has an appealing look and a nice interior. Although creature comfort is lacking, we were sold on the relatively decent price for the number of features and the 5 years of free maintenance. We also appreciate the spacious interior and the 3rd row seats, which are nice to have if needed without compromising space. While the 2nd row is a little tighter than some competitors, I, being 6' tall, could still sit there comfortably. This SUV will serve us well for a few years until we find something in this price range that excites us.

I bought this car because of its superior safety rating, as I have two young children and wanted them to learn to drive in city traffic safely. The car has done its job in protecting my children, and I am grateful for that. Although the dashboard and functionality were outdated when I purchased it, my focus was on safety. I informed the salesman that my only two criteria for an XC90 were that the car is white and that it has a navigation system. Unfortunately, the navigation system does not work consistently, and I have contacted the dealer multiple times to fix the issue. Despite several software updates, the problem persists, and Volvo has informed me that they are unable to fix it. They have offered me incentives to trade in the vehicle for a new one, but I am disappointed that they are not supporting their product. As a Volvo owner, I expected high standards of satisfaction and pride, but unfortunately, I am neither satisfied nor proud. I had the option to purchase any SUV with a third row seat for my family, but I chose this Volvo as my first one because of the company's reputation and my research indicating that they were a solid company that stood behind their products. Unfortunately, I have had some issues with the navigation system, which is the only upgrade option that I requested. While I am disappointed with this, I must say that the vehicle itself has worked fine mechanically. Although I have owned vehicles from other manufacturers in the past, I have never run into a problem with maintenance or repair. I am hopeful that the manufacturer will provide better support in the future. Despite this experience, I am not completely dissatisfied with the vehicle and would consider purchasing from Volvo again in the future.

I purchased my 2012 XC90 with 50,000 miles in December 2014 for $23,000. While I have had some maintenance issues, overall the car has been okay. Unfortunately, I have spent $12,000 on maintenance over the last three years. Some of the major issues I have experienced include the car not starting one morning, which required a tow to the dealership for repair. It took them 7 hours of investigation at $200+ per hour to figure out what was wrong, and I ended up paying $3,000 for the repair, which was not covered by warranty. The issue turned out to be a failing AC fan sensor, which kept the fan running and drained the battery. The AC also broke, which cost $2,000 to fix. This seems to be a common problem with XC90s, as I had the same issue with an earlier model. Additionally, all of the car's engine mounts broke, which cost $1,500 to replace, and I had to spend $1,600 on brake pad and disk replacement. It's worth noting that maintenance costs for Volvos are generally quite high, with every regular maintenance visit costing at least $1,000, and often closer to $1,500. Despite these issues, my XC90 still has a few irritating faults, such as the remote key only working randomly and an irritating bug with the steering wheel radio control that causes the radio to jump into programming mode if you press volume control and then immediately select a channel. While I wouldn't buy a pre-owned Volvo again due to the reliability issues and high maintenance costs, I still appreciate the car for what it is.

I recently purchased a used 2010 XC90 with 100k miles on it. Although the front leather seats were worn out with cracking and fading, the car was still in good condition. Here are some observations I made about the car at this age: 1. The gas mileage is actually decent for an old, heavy SUV. I am getting 19/20 with the standard V6. 2. The oil level sensor is very sensitive, so I usually put a full 8 quarts in, even though 7.8 quarts is recommended. It burns oil very slowly, so the light will come on mid-oil change, even though it's still in the dipstick range. I usually go ahead and top it off with another half a quart. 3. There's a weird auto fan feature with the AC that the previous owner warned me about. If you leave the AC on when you shut off the car, it tries to circulate air while you're away. The problem is if the car sits for several days this way, you'll kill the battery. You have to remember to shut off the AC when the car is parked for a while. And, since the battery is in the back of the car, you'll have to crawl in from the front to change it if there's not enough power to unlock the tailgate. 5. A few items like seatbelt latches and keyless entry have not stood well with the test of time. It's best to double-check those locks before you walk off trusting that all 4 doors are actually locked. 6. Mechanically, the car is great for 10 years old. There are no leaks anywhere, the engine is clean, and it runs well. I would highly recommend buying one used if you find one with low miles.
