Toyota Sienna problems

The Toyota Sienna is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Toyota primarily for the North American market. It is named for the Italian city of Siena, in the region of Tuscany. It replaced the first generation Previa van in 1997 with a more conventional front-wheel drive layout and shares a heavily revised platform with the Camry. Both the Previa and original Sienna were smaller than the other minivans they competed against, but a redesign in 2003 (for the 2004 model year) increased the dimensions to match those of its competitors.
It was redesigned again in 2010 (for the 2011 model year). The third generation Sienna went on sale in the United States in February 2010 and is the first Sienna to ever receive a "Top Safety Pick" award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. A 2020 redesign (for the 2021 model year) saw the Sienna becoming a hybrid vehicle for its fourth generation. While previous generations of the Sienna were exported to select Asian and European markets, the fourth generation is the first to be produced outside of the United States as Chinese production commenced in July 2021 by two Toyota joint ventures. In China, it is also marketed as the Toyota Granvia.
Following the discontinuation of General Motors's all-wheel drive minivans in 2006, the Sienna was the only minivan in its class offered with AWD in North America until the 2021 Chrysler Pacifica was introduced with an AWD option in 2020.
The Sienna is not available in Japan and Australia as it is not produced in a right-hand drive configuration, and the segment in these countries is already occupied by the Alphard/Vellfire and the HiAce/Granvia respectively.
As of the fourth generation, introduced in 2020, the Sienna is now built on Toyota's TNGA-K platform, which it shares with most of Toyota’s other large MPVs and crossovers.

Common Toyota Sienna problems
The Toyota Sienna is known for its solid reliability, earning a 4.0 out of 5.0 rating from RepairPal, placing it 8th out of 32 segment competitors. However, there are some common issues that potential buyers should be aware of.
One common problem is a loss of engine power, particularly in the 2007 model. Owners of this model have reported experiencing a loss of power when slowing down, sometimes accompanied by transmission problems like jerking and slipping. Unfortunately, the root cause of this issue remains undetermined.
Another common issue is cracking on the dashboard surface. This problem has been reported by owners of various Sienna models, including the 2006 model, where it was one of the most common problems reported.
Transmission failure is also a relatively common problem in older Siennas, with many reports of this issue occurring around 78,000 miles. The symptoms include the vehicle's RPM increasing without a corresponding increase in speed.
Power door issues are another safety concern for Sienna owners. The door's cable may become damaged, causing the power door to stop working. This issue poses a considerable safety risk, especially for rear passengers who may need to force the door open manually.
The 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2011 Toyota Sienna models are best avoided due to multiple complaints from several owners and a history of significant manufacturing defects. These defects include body/paint problems, brake problems, steering problems, exterior accessory problems, and engine problems.
On the other hand, the 1998 to 2003 Toyota Sienna models are generally safer to buy used, as they recorded few problems. The first generation of the Sienna, which ran from 1998 to 2003, had few issues related to the engine, brakes, and body/paint.
In summary, while the Toyota Sienna is generally a reliable vehicle, potential buyers should be aware of these common issues, particularly in certain model years.

I have owned a Honda Odyssey, Dodge Grand Caravan, and now the Toyota Sienna. The Sienna definitely has some quirks that take getting used to. However, I have found that it is reliable, strong, and problem-free. While the new drive train installed in the 2018+ model can be a bit annoying, the engine has plenty of high-end power and will have no problem getting you up to speed. The infotainment system can be a bit cumbersome out of the box, but you do get used to what works and what doesn't. Overall, I have found the Sienna to be a great choice for a long-lasting, problem-free van. So, if you're looking for a reliable vehicle that won't let you down, I highly recommend the Sienna.

I bought my van in '99 and have driven it extensively! It has now covered 92,000 miles, and I change the oil every 5 to 7.5K miles. The van still runs beautifully, and the oil is still light brown after all those miles. It doesn't use a drop of oil between changes. I took it on a long trip across Nevada and got 26 mpg driving between 75 and 80 mph! (Over 540 miles on one tank!) The only problem I've had was a broken rear latch (which cost 200 bucks to fix) and a slow driver's side window, which we believe was caused after it was stolen and recovered. The only thing I wish it had was more room behind the rear seats, but the seats are a dream to flip up or remove.

Our Sienna XLE AWD van has been driven for 17,000 miles and it is a great design. The all-wheel drive works perfectly in the snow. However, Toyota's decision to eliminate the spare tire and use run-flat tires was a major mistake. The run-flat tires are unreliable, overpriced, and short-lived, making the van ride like a truck. At 16,000 miles, I had to spend $500 to replace two tires, and the other two are not far behind. It is important for Toyota to reconsider their decision and provide better tire options for their customers.

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my family's experience with the Toyota Sienna minivan. We've tried a few different models, but the Sienna has definitely been our favorite so far. It's not only more affordable than competitors like the Honda Odyssey and Nissan Quest, but it also has impressive power - it can reach 60 mph in under 7 seconds! Safety is a top priority for us, and we were grateful for the Sienna's sturdy construction when we were in a rollover accident in February 2009. Thankfully, nobody was hurt. The stabilizer bars in the roof and doors did an excellent job of keeping the car stable during the accident. Overall, we highly recommend the Toyota Sienna for anyone in the market for a reliable and safe minivan.

The electric door stopped working a year ago and I had to replace the window motors. It was quite a challenge to get the window up in 110 degree heat, but I managed it in 20 minutes! Unfortunately, both visors wore out, but that's understandable given how much I use them. I do a lot of city driving, so I have to repair the brakes quite often. The engine light and tire light have been on for about 6 years, but I'm not too worried about it. I did have some trouble passing the smog test for the last 6 years, but I managed to get it done after spending $1,500 on repairs. I had to replace the computer in 2011, which cost over $3,000 with the dealer. I'm not sure if they ripped me off or not, but it was a necessary repair. Unfortunately, one by one the door handles stopped working and had to be replaced. I also had to fix an oil leak and replace a broken axle. One morning, the steering wheel even fell off, but thankfully I was in a parking lot at the time. Despite all of these challenges, I absolutely love this van. It's comfortable, reliable, and I raised my kids in it. I would definitely get it again.

Congratulations on your new Toyota Sienna! I noticed that you mentioned some concerns about the Remote Connect app not working with this car. While it would be great if it did, I'm glad to hear that the rest of the technology is working well for you. I understand your frustration with the Lane Assist and Lane Keeping features, but it's good to know that they can be easily disabled. It sounds like you prefer the 2014 Sienna model, which is a great choice as well. Thank you for sharing your experience with us and we hope you continue to enjoy your Toyota!

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2010 Honda Odyssey. It has been a great family vehicle for us since we purchased it in January 2010. We have taken it on many long trips and it has been very comfortable. The vehicle has plenty of power and is feature rich with the rear entertainment system, navigation, Bluetooth, backup camera, and parking sensors. Recently, we experienced some issues with the transmission at just over 96,000 miles. We took it to the dealer and they diagnosed a failed internal component. Although we did not expect a transmission failure this soon, we had it replaced and it now runs better than new. Overall, we are still very happy with our Honda Odyssey and would recommend it to anyone looking for a reliable family vehicle.

I recently purchased a 2019 Sienna SE 7-Passenger AWD and while I was happy with my choice, I did encounter a few issues. Unfortunately, the infotainment screen that controls music, navigation, and bluetooth phone capability malfunctioned just two minutes into my ownership of the minivan. This was a bit of a hassle as I had to pull over and turn the vehicle off and on again for it to work. The problem persisted every time I drove the minivan, but thankfully the Toyota dealer was able to determine that it had faulty radio equipment and replaced the screen for free. Although this involved two trips to the dealership and some temporary inconvenience, I was pleased with the resolution. I chose the Toyota Sienna over the Honda Odyssey based on Consumer Reports predicting that the Sienna would have better reliability, and while I still believe this to be true in the long term, I do think that Toyota should have done better quality control on this vehicle before selling it with faulty electronics. Additionally, I found that my Chicco infant car seat base was not easy to install due to the LATCH connectors in the Sienna being more difficult to access than they were in my previous vehicle. Lastly, I found the climate control system to be a bit less user-friendly than I would have liked, with almost all of the buttons on the center dash being for climate control, but not being super intuitive in my opinion. Overall, while my Sienna meets my goal of having a minivan for my family, it falls short of my expectations based on the price.

I purchased the Sienna as a replacement for my Caravan, which had served me well for many years. Unfortunately, I have experienced some maintenance issues with the Sienna. Despite this, the staff at the dealership have been helpful in addressing these issues. I have had to replace the brakes and the power door locks, and the A/C compressor has failed twice. Although the power door lock issue seems to be a common problem across the Toyota fleet, the staff at the dealership have always been professional and courteous. Currently, I am experiencing a clanking noise from the left CV joint, but I am confident that the dealership will be able to resolve this issue. Overall, I appreciate the assistance I have received from the dealership, and I am hopeful that any future issues will be resolved quickly and efficiently.

I've been trying to convince my wife and kids to get a van for years, but they always laughed at me. Recently, we needed to buy a slightly used car and it came down to a 4Runner or a Sienna (which I wasn't too keen on). After some convincing, my wife and daughter took a second test drive and fell in love with the Sienna. We ended up buying a new one because of the slow depreciation rate of Toyotas. Here's the thing: the Sienna is a Toyota, which means only Honda owners can truly appreciate its quality. But it's luxurious inside and feels like a limousine. It's incredibly spacious and comfortable, unlike an SUV or sedan, and can even fit an upright piano behind the third row passengers. The ride is smooth and quiet, with great visibility. The tech features like the WiFi network, lane departure and cruise radar are nice, and the power rear vent windows controlled by the driver are a lifesaver for emergency dog gas removal. Passengers can even watch streaming videos via WiFi on the back movie screen, making long trips more enjoyable. The gas mileage is over 20 in the city, and the Sienna is so comfortable that you don't need to mash the gas pedal. The beautiful leather interior is really nice, even though the 2020 Sienna is a little dated. It's a toss-up between the Sienna and the Honda, but I can see myself driving this van for 300k miles. Update: after our first 1,000 mile family road trip, we give it three thumbs up. We got close to 27 mpg on the highway at 70-80 mph with a 20 gallon tank, which gives us a nice cruising range. UPDATE: We've driven 25,000 miles in 15 months and it's still going strong! The van has been a great ride overall, although the touch screen feels a bit outdated and there is some wind noise. I'm happy that I purchased the last non-hybrid Sienna. The direct-injection engine is the standout feature of the Sienna in the 2020 model, and it's a shame that Toyota has discontinued it. While hybrids are nice, I personally don't need one. Our Sienna has plenty of smooth and quiet power, and it gets almost 25 city and close to 30 highway (sometimes more) on regular gas. Plus, the gasoline engine is built to last 300,000 miles, which is impressive. I hope Toyota will consider making the hybrid an option or pairing it with the V6. UPDATE 2/1/23. After 39 months and 75,000 miles, the van is still running perfectly, with the exception of new tires and a $350 radar recalibration. UPDATE 2/27/23. At 40 months and 77,096 miles, I had to pay $1,284.93 for a bad intake gasket and purge valve. While this was disappointing, I still believe that Toyota is a reliable brand overall. However, I have decided to trade in the Sienna for a Miata, which is giving me over 34MPG on average after 4,000 miles. I'm saving money and enjoying the ride.
