Toyota Sienna problems

The Toyota Sienna is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Toyota primarily for the North American market. It is named for the Italian city of Siena, in the region of Tuscany. It replaced the first generation Previa van in 1997 with a more conventional front-wheel drive layout and shares a heavily revised platform with the Camry. Both the Previa and original Sienna were smaller than the other minivans they competed against, but a redesign in 2003 (for the 2004 model year) increased the dimensions to match those of its competitors.
It was redesigned again in 2010 (for the 2011 model year). The third generation Sienna went on sale in the United States in February 2010 and is the first Sienna to ever receive a "Top Safety Pick" award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. A 2020 redesign (for the 2021 model year) saw the Sienna becoming a hybrid vehicle for its fourth generation. While previous generations of the Sienna were exported to select Asian and European markets, the fourth generation is the first to be produced outside of the United States as Chinese production commenced in July 2021 by two Toyota joint ventures. In China, it is also marketed as the Toyota Granvia.
Following the discontinuation of General Motors's all-wheel drive minivans in 2006, the Sienna was the only minivan in its class offered with AWD in North America until the 2021 Chrysler Pacifica was introduced with an AWD option in 2020.
The Sienna is not available in Japan and Australia as it is not produced in a right-hand drive configuration, and the segment in these countries is already occupied by the Alphard/Vellfire and the HiAce/Granvia respectively.
As of the fourth generation, introduced in 2020, the Sienna is now built on Toyota's TNGA-K platform, which it shares with most of Toyota’s other large MPVs and crossovers.

Common Toyota Sienna problems
The Toyota Sienna is known for its solid reliability, earning a 4.0 out of 5.0 rating from RepairPal, placing it 8th out of 32 segment competitors. However, there are some common issues that potential buyers should be aware of.
One common problem is a loss of engine power, particularly in the 2007 model. Owners of this model have reported experiencing a loss of power when slowing down, sometimes accompanied by transmission problems like jerking and slipping. Unfortunately, the root cause of this issue remains undetermined.
Another common issue is cracking on the dashboard surface. This problem has been reported by owners of various Sienna models, including the 2006 model, where it was one of the most common problems reported.
Transmission failure is also a relatively common problem in older Siennas, with many reports of this issue occurring around 78,000 miles. The symptoms include the vehicle's RPM increasing without a corresponding increase in speed.
Power door issues are another safety concern for Sienna owners. The door's cable may become damaged, causing the power door to stop working. This issue poses a considerable safety risk, especially for rear passengers who may need to force the door open manually.
The 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2011 Toyota Sienna models are best avoided due to multiple complaints from several owners and a history of significant manufacturing defects. These defects include body/paint problems, brake problems, steering problems, exterior accessory problems, and engine problems.
On the other hand, the 1998 to 2003 Toyota Sienna models are generally safer to buy used, as they recorded few problems. The first generation of the Sienna, which ran from 1998 to 2003, had few issues related to the engine, brakes, and body/paint.
In summary, while the Toyota Sienna is generally a reliable vehicle, potential buyers should be aware of these common issues, particularly in certain model years.

Vehicle year: 2018
We bought a new 2018 Sienna SE after trying out several other minivans. We chose the SE model because of its unique sporty look, black interior, and many safety features. We've been very happy with it for the past 15 months and 11k miles. There are many pluses, including the numerous safety features, ease of driving with lane assist and radar cruise control, and its stable feel at 75+ mph on interstates. We get 32 or more mpg at 57mph, and 30 or more at 75mph thanks to the 8-speed gear box. In town, we get about 24mpg. Our only minor gripes with the SE are that the wheels are 19 inches, so it's not as smooth riding as the 18-inch wheels on other trims. We also wish Toyota had put in more soundproofing to cut back on wind and road noise. Lastly, the info system is a bit of a pain to learn and use, so Toyota needs to rework it. Overall, we're very happy with our purchase!

I recently purchased a 2012 XLE FWD model and I am very pleased with its spaciousness and comfort. During my search, I test drove both the equally loaded Highlander SE v6 FWD and Sienna models. While the Highlander had better pickup, I found the Sienna's handling to be superior. In terms of mpg, the Sienna is only one mile less efficient than the Highlander. Although my wife was initially interested in the Odyssey, we ultimately decided against it due to negative reviews regarding wind noise and transmission issues. Additionally, the equally loaded Odyssey ELX is more expensive than the Sienna XLE. While I have noticed some wind and road noise in my Sienna, I still find it to be a smooth and affordable ride, especially with the added benefit of two years of free maintenance.

**I have FW, accidentally picked AWD model for this review and can't change it. Hoping to replace my van soon with a 2012 or newer AWD Sienna. I bought my 07 Sienna 3 years ago with 120000 miles and now I'm closing in on 170k. It's been a great experience so far, as it has needed nothing other than routine maintenance. It's almost always a pleasure to drive, and I love the space it provides for hauling kids or cargo. The seats are very comfortable and supportive, making long trips a breeze. Despite my children's best efforts, the plastic interior and even the cloth seats still look new. However, I have noticed that the carpet has taken a bit of a beating. The only downside is that it has little power to go uphill in wet, slushy weather or through snow, and I've gotten stuck a few times. Prior to this, I had a Pilot for several years, and during the test drive, the Sienna surprised me with how much lighter and zippier it felt. The sliding doors have been a bit of an issue, though. Only the passenger side door had power opening, and it suddenly stopped working after 6 months of ownership. Both doors have frozen shut in extreme cold, and twice (!) the driver's side door lock mechanism wouldn't function properly, causing the door to slide open while driving. It was gummed up inside for lack of better terminology. I would occasionally spray the track and joints with silicone spray (to prevent freezing), and apparently that attracted grime. So that is something that needs attention and maintenance. My other pet peeve is the lack of lights in the trunk! How am I supposed to get my groceries out in the dark without missing the stray item that fell out?

Vehicle year: 2012
After my Odyssey had a transmission problem, I decided to test drive a Sienna. I loved it and ended up buying it. Two weeks later, I still don't regret my decision. The handling and ease of turns are excellent, which was a pleasant surprise. The seats are spacious, and even the second-row middle seat is fairly comfortable. The third-row bench's ability to recline is a nice touch. The ride is so comfortable that you don't feel like you're driving at a high speed, so if you tend to speed, keep an eye on your speedometer. The acceleration is decent for a minivan, and overall, I would say it really steps up its game to rival the Honda Odyssey.

This car has been incredibly reliable! I'm always amazed by how well it runs. I take it in for regular safety checks and, aside from routine maintenance, it's never had any issues.

At 19,100 miles, and with regular tire rotation, all four Dunlop tires have worn down to 4/32. It seems like there might be an issue with the tires. I specifically avoided buying an AWD to prevent premature tire wear, as reported by Consumer Reports, but it doesn't seem to have made a difference!

I have owned a 2009 Sienna LE, a 2012 Sienna XLE, and now a 2019 Sienna XLE Premium. I am happy to report that my first two cars lasted over 100,000 miles with only routine maintenance. I have only owned my 2019 Sienna for 4 days, but I am already impressed! Although I am still trying to figure out some of the features, I am confident that I will get the hang of it soon. As a 78-year-old, I find that my learning is a little slower than it was a few years ago. I have also owned a 2006 Corolla and currently own a 2012 Camry LE, and I have not been disappointed in any Toyota vehicle. UPDATE 5/11/2020: I reported some major issues with the Navigation System to Toyota over a year ago, but unfortunately, they have not been able to fix the problem. I spent an extra $2000 to get the Navigation System, and I believe that Toyota should refund some of that money, but they have not done so. As a result, I have had to resort to using my Garmin GPS, which is more reliable. However, all other aspects of the Sienna are very satisfactory. I recently traded it for a 2021 Sienna, and I absolutely love it!

Vehicle year: 2015
The 2015 and 2016 Sienna is a great looking van, but it's important to do your due diligence before making a purchase. I wish I had done more research myself, but unfortunately it's too late now. While you can buy whatever you like, I recommend doing a search on any potential vibration or problems with the 2015/2016 Sienna, as it is a common issue. I have experienced it myself and unfortunately it cannot be fixed. When looking for a family van, I chose the Sienna because it was a Toyota and had read good reviews about the 2015 model with new improvements. However, just a few days after purchasing it and driving around 300 miles, I noticed a dash, steering wheel, and floor buzz vibration starting from a complete stop on a hill when reaching 1150 to 1200 RPM (15~20 mph), and it happened again after shifting to 2nd gear under 20 mph. Additionally, the passenger slider door often gets stuck halfway closing with a beep and won't go back or close with the switch. While holding up traffic at the school drop-off lane, I had to switch the door to manual, get out, show my face to angry people, and close it manually. Then it works fine for a while. Both rear slider door glasses make a metal tapping noise when driving with the window open more than 3Did Toyota disclose that these vans make noise and vibrations before purchase? I am not too happy and have already lost interest in my new vehicle in less than a month due to the $37K normal vibrations and rattles that came with it. The warranty and Toyota customer service have not been helpful. However, I do like the 2015 and up design. I am considering selling my Sienna for something else. Good luck with your decision!

The Sienna is a great family car that offers excellent value. It has plenty of space and is easy to get in and out of. We have owned two Siennas, starting with the base model and then upgrading to the limited. The limited model has some really nice features, such as a back-up camera, parking assistance/warning system, keyless door entry, heated seats, and a great sound system. However, we have had some issues with Toyota's service department at Stapp Interstate Toyota in Northern Colorado. They have been dismissive and unresponsive, which has been frustrating. Additionally, we have experienced an issue with both side view mirrors clicking/jostling when accelerating or decelerating. This is distracting and started within a year of owning a brand new car. Despite bringing this issue to the attention of Toyota's customer care team and management, they have not been helpful in resolving the issue. While we have had some negative experiences with Toyota, I would still recommend the Sienna as a good family car for its space and storage. It is worth noting that the road noise is high due to the car's size, and there is some wind noise from the moon roof, but this is to be expected. Overall, the Sienna is a great choice for families in need of a spacious and reliable vehicle.

I have been a loyal Toyota owner for years and have always been satisfied with their quality and reliability. However, I recently experienced some issues with my van that have been a cause for concern. Despite taking good care of all my Toyotas, this particular van has had some problems, including engine damage due to oil sludge and issues with the interior falling apart. As a parent, safety and reliability are my top priorities when it comes to transporting my children, and unfortunately, this van has not met those expectations. I hope to find a solution soon so that I can continue to trust in the Toyota brand.
