2012 Toyota Sienna problems

The Toyota Sienna is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Toyota primarily for the North American market. It is named for the Italian city of Siena, in the region of Tuscany. It replaced the first generation Previa van in 1997 with a more conventional front-wheel drive layout and shares a heavily revised platform with the Camry. Both the Previa and original Sienna were smaller than the other minivans they competed against, but a redesign in 2003 (for the 2004 model year) increased the dimensions to match those of its competitors.

It was redesigned again in 2010 (for the 2011 model year). The third generation Sienna went on sale in the United States in February 2010 and is the first Sienna to ever receive a "Top Safety Pick" award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. A 2020 redesign (for the 2021 model year) saw the Sienna becoming a hybrid vehicle for its fourth generation. While previous generations of the Sienna were exported to select Asian and European markets, the fourth generation is the first to be produced outside of the United States as Chinese production commenced in July 2021 by two Toyota joint ventures. In China, it is also marketed as the Toyota Granvia.

Following the discontinuation of General Motors's all-wheel drive minivans in 2006, the Sienna was the only minivan in its class offered with AWD in North America until the 2021 Chrysler Pacifica was introduced with an AWD option in 2020.

The Sienna is not available in Japan and Australia as it is not produced in a right-hand drive configuration, and the segment in these countries is already occupied by the Alphard/Vellfire and the HiAce/Granvia respectively.

As of the fourth generation, introduced in 2020, the Sienna is now built on Toyota's TNGA-K platform, which it shares with most of Toyota’s other large MPVs and crossovers.

Common 2012 Toyota Sienna problems

The 2012 Toyota Sienna has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. Here are some of the issues in detail:

  • Rubber Brake Hoses: Vantage Mobility International, LLC (Vantage) is recalling certain 2012-2018 AMS Genesis wheelchair vans, built on a Toyota Sienna vehicles. The rubber brake hoses that attach to the rear wheel assembly may be too short, causing them to rub against the rear axle trailing arm. This could potentially lead to a brake fluid leak and reduced brake performance. Vantage will notify owners, and dealers will install a set of rear brake hoses that will provide the proper clearance, free of charge.
  • Airbag Sensor/Control Module: Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) is recalling certain 2009-2013 models, including the 2012 Toyota Sienna. During modification by SET to include accessories such as leather seat covers, seat heaters or headrest DVD systems, these vehicles may not have had the passenger seat occupant sensing system calibration tested. Without passing the calibration test, the occupant sensing system may not operate as designed, which could affect the airbag deployment. Southeast Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will test the sensitivity of the occupant detection sensors, and recalibrate them as necessary.
  • Steering Column Shaking: Some owners of the 2012 Toyota Sienna AWD have reported shaking in the steering column when driving at speeds over 65 mph. This issue could be due to a variety of factors, including worn out or misaligned steering components, or issues with the suspension or wheels.
  • Engine Noise and Lack of Power: Some owners have reported that the engine in the 2012 Toyota Sienna AWD is noisier and lacks power when accelerating compared to previous models. This could be due to a variety of factors, including worn out or dirty engine components, or issues with the fuel or ignition systems.
  • Hissing Sound from Engine Compartment: Some owners have reported a minor hissing sound from the engine compartment when accelerating. This could be due to a variety of factors, including leaks in the cooling or fuel systems, or issues with the exhaust or intake systems.

It is important to note that not all 2012 Toyota Siennas will experience these issues, and some problems may be covered under warranty or recall campaigns. If you are experiencing any of these issues, it is recommended to take your vehicle to a certified Toyota dealership or mechanic for further diagnosis and repair.

WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-12
  • VIN: 5TDDK3DC0CS
  • Components: WHEELS
  • Summary: On 8/22/2022 I had to replace the 2 front tires with MIM-Supreme Tour 18 inch tire 235/55R18. On 8/22/2022 I had 162,323 miles on the 2012 Toyota Sienna XLE 4 months later and 17,252 miles driven - the 2012 Toyota Sienna now has 179,575 miles and on 12/28/2023 the 2 front tires again have to be replaced - Matrix Toyr RS 11 on 18 inch rims. Now its July 2024 - again 6 months and now 6,700 miles and just the front tires are bald and dangerous to drive if any moisture on the road. All these tires are slated for 50,000 miles and I and not getting even half the mileage. Most driving is on highways and regular maintenance occurs on the car. this car should be designed to go at least 25,000 miles ( so once a year ) on a set of tires. I do not drive fast nor aggressive.

SEATS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-11
  • VIN: 5TDDK3DCXCS
  • Components: SEATS
  • Summary: The third row passenger side split was stored and then put back up. Upon lifting the seats, pieces fell out (spring, washer, and screw) and the locking mechanism would not lock the seats into place. I am not sure how long these parts were loose, but it is a major safety hazard as the vehicle seat was not secured to the car as intended. We plan to to follow up with Toyota, but upon investigating, it seems that this is an issue for several 2011 Siennas. My Sienna was manufactured 4/2012. This is the smaller of the split seats, but out of an abundance of caution, we don't plan to use the 3rd row at all until a remedy is produced. Unfortunately, I saw only consumer complaints in regards to the 2011 3rd row seating issue and didn't see any solutions.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-22
  • VIN: 5TDKK3DC9CS
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: My wife let me know that when turning to the right (not an aggressive turn, but a normal turn from one lane to the next), the whole electrical system of the minivan would shut down and then come back on. I had a mechanic check it out and they say that this is due to the electrical steering system and will have to be replaced by the dealer. He was able to reproduce the same condition where he was able to get the minivan to lose power when changing lanes. He STRONGLY advised that we should have the vehicle towed to the dealer as he felt that it wasn't safe to drive due to this. I feel that this will end up causing a lot of crashes and also that this should be covered by the manufacturer under a recall.

  • Summary: We have had problems with our 2011 Sienna's electromagnetic coupling and the rear differential. Through my research, I have learned this is a very common problem with the Toyota Sienna. Appears the same problem occured in the RAV4 and a recall was issued, however an recall was not issued with the Sienna. The repair is very expensive, upwards for $4,000 and we had two electromagnetic couplings fail. Are there any potential action items we can take with Toyota. Kind regards,

TIRES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-12-20
  • VIN: 5TDZK3DC4CS
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: Costco installed 4 tires on my 2012 Toyota Sienna on 11/10/2021. The tire had 80,000 mile warranty. At the time of Tire installation, the mileage on my vehicle was 253,405. I did my tire rotations every 5000 mile at Suburban Toyota in Farmington Hills. I took the vehicle for tire rotation at 283,618 miles and the dealership refused to rotate the tires because the tread was below 3/32 seconds. I thought that this was a mistake and went again to rotate the tires at 288,789 miles. I went to Costco on the same day and told Costco representative at the counter [XXX] that the tire needs to replaced under warranty. I informed him that I drove only 30,000 mile on the tires. He checked all my mileage papers when I did the tire rotations. He went inside and talked to [XXX] (Tire section manager) and told me that the tire need to be under 2/32 seconds for Michelin Warranty to work. I asked him to arrange a tire rotation and scheduled the tire rotation on 12/20/2022. I took the vehicle to Costco on 12/20/2022. The mechanic called me after 30 minutes and informed me that the tire tread is under 2/32 second and cannot be rotated. I talked to [XXX] about it and he went to talk to [XXX]. He told me that the mechanic is going to rotate the tires and I can come back after one month to check the tires again. I informed [XXX] that he, Costco, and Michelin are playing with the safety of my family. He told me that Costco is not concerned about the safety of my family. If I am concerned about the safety of my family, I should change the tires without the warranty. I believe that Costco and Michelin are installing 30,000 mile tires as 80,000 mile warranty tires. I drive most of my driving on the freeway and on cruise control. So there should not be any issue with my driving. I got tires from Discount Tire Company before and had no issue like this. I request NHSTB to investigate the issue and warn people of this issue before people die. INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-02-02
  • VIN: 5TDDK3DC1CS
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Vehicle has a whining grinding noise, after having it serviced at Toyota Dealership, the finding has been a known issue for a few years: Rear Differential Viscous Coupling gone bad. If this is the same set up as the Toyota Rav and they issued a recall on it, What is the issue with not calling it for the Sienna's, especially when its a very known problem? Its a complete RIPOFF to the public, and something truly must be done. Thank you.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-06-24
  • VIN: 5TDJK3DC4CS
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: Vehicle began 'whirring' metal noise from underneath. Local mechanic said it was coming from rear differential. I took it to a Toyota dealer, they said rear differential coupler needs replacing ($2159) and drive shaft ($992). It seems the bearing ring inside this sealed unit has failed. Noise is continuous while driving, concern of part failure - we are taking vehicle on family vacation. Researching on - line it appears to be common problem with the Sienna's. Toyota had same issue with RAV 4's and issued recall but have not for the Sienna's. I called Toyota corporate in TX (got up 3 levels) to no avail, and it curt tone, they said they cannot help. Based on other similar stories on line from other Sienna owners, this seems to be a common very expensive design flaw problem with this vehicle.

WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-04-26
  • VIN: 5TDKK3DC5CS
  • Components: WHEELS
  • Summary: WE REALIZED THAT OUR VEHICLE HAD A FLAT TIRE. WHEN WE WENT TO ATTEMPT TO PUT ON THE SPARE, WE NOTICED THAT ALL OF THE LUG NUTS HAD "SWOLLEN" AND NONE OF THE LUG NUTS WOULD FIT IN THE CORRESPONDING SOCKET. ULTIMATELY, THE LUG NUT CAPS DELAMINATED, AND IT TOOK OVER AN HOUR TO TEAR THE CAPS FROM THE NUTS. IF THIS HAD HAPPENED ON THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY, ADDRESSING THIS ISSUE WOULD HAVE BEEN INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS. IT DOES NOT SEEM TO MAKE SENSE TO CONTINUE USING LUG NUTS WITH DECORATIVE CAPS FOR AESTHETIC REASONS WHILE IMPACTING THE SAFETY OF DRIVERS WITH FLAT TIRES.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-09-01
  • VIN: 5TDJK3DC5CS
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: MY 2012 TOYOTA SIENNA RECENTLY BEGAN MAKING A LOUD WHINING NOISE FROM THE REAR AXLE AREA. UPON INSPECTION, WE WERE INFORMED THAT THE DIFFERENTIAL UNIT WAS FAILING AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THIS WOULD COST US BETWEEN $2,500-$3,000. AFTER SOME RESEARCH, I DISCOVERED THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE SIENNA, LIKELY CAUSED BY A DESIGN FLAW. THE SAME UNIT WAS USED ON THE RAV-4, AND AFTER SIMILAR PROBLEMS SURFACED IT WAS RECALLED AND FIXED BY TOYOTA. GIVEN THE DANGER POSED BY FAILURE OF THIS PART TO A FAMILY VEHICLE, AND THE KNOWN EXISTENCE OF THE PROBLEM BY TOYOTA, IT SEEMS OBVIOUS THAT IT SHOULD BE IMMEDIATELY RECALLED AND FIXED BY THE MANUFACTURER.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-08-03
  • VIN: 5TDXK3DC3C3
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: BROUGHT CAR IN FOR AIRBAG SAFETY RECALL. WAS TOLD IT WAS COMPLETED. AFTER THIS RECEIVED ANOTHER RECALL MAILING FOR THE SAME PROBLEM. CALLED THE TOYOTA RECALL RESOLUTION TEAM NUMBER TO VERIFY. WAS TOLD THAT A TEMPORARY AIRBAG WAS INSTALLED AND THAT I NEEDED TO HAVE THE GOOD ONE REINSTALLED WHEN THEY GOT THEM IN. SHE CALLED THE DEALER TO SET UP AN APPOINTMENT THEN TOLD ME THAT IT WAS TAKEN CARE OF AND A NEW AIRBAG WAS NOT NEEDED. AND STATED THAT SHE WAS CONFUSED. AND THAT I NEEDED TO GO BACK TO THE DEALER TO GET A WRITTEN STATEMENT THAT THE WORK WAS DONE. I NOTICED AND EXPLAINED THAT IT LOOKS LIKE A SUBSTITUTE WAS MADE AND THE RECEIPT SAYS : 'BAG 0.8. 2007-2009 YARIS HATCHBACK 2007-2009 YARIS SEDAN'. SO IT LOOKS LIKE A TEMPORARY SUBSTITUTE WAS MADE AND THAT I WAS NOT INFORMED. I SAID THAT IF THEY GIVE WRITTEN DOCUMENTATION THAT THE REPAIR WAS MADE IT MAKES IT LEGALLY THEIR RESPONSIBILITY BUT THIS WOULD BE AFTER THE FACT IF A PROBLEM OR FATALITY WOULD OCCUR AND NOT SOLVE THE ISSUE OF ASSURING THAT A PROPER AIRBAG HAD BEEN INSTALLED. CAN YOU GIVE CLARIFICATION AND SUGGESTED FOLLOW UP (POSSIBLY THIRD PARTY) TO GUARANTEE SAFETY?

HAPPENED YESTERDAY WHEN REVERSING VERY SLOWLY OUT OF DRIVEWAY--WAS PRESSING BRAKE (NOT ACCELERATOR) AND SUDDENLY THE ENGINE GOT VERY LOUD AND WAS REVVING UP. PRESSED BRAKE HARD AND THRU THE CAR INTO PARK AND PRESSED THE ACCELERATOR AND THE ENGINE WENT BACK TO NORMAL. VERY SCARY. HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE AND FORTUNATELY WE HAVE NOT RUN INTO ANYTHING AND THE CAR HAS NOT TAKEN OFF AT HIGH SPEED.

Thus, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) Number 110, "Tire Selection and Rims."
  • Consequence: An inaccurate label could lead to owners overloading their vehicles and tires. An overloaded vehicle can result in a tire failure which may result in a vehicle crash, personal injury, or property damage.

This could increase the risk of personal injury during the event of a vehicle crash necessitating airbag deployment.
  • Remedy: Southeast Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will test the sensitivity of the occupant detection sensors, and recalibrate them as necessary. The recall began on March 21, 2013. Owners may contact Southeast Toyota at 1-800-301-6859.

Negative 2012 Toyota Sienna car reviews

  1. Santiago Schamberger 2025-01-09

I've always been a car guy, then SUV, all German. However, with a newborn and our family growing, we needed a larger capacity vehicle. We opted for a 7-seater, or even more in the future if necessary. At first, I was concerned about the lack of respect for van drivers, but I have experienced nothing but comfort and drivability with this van. The ride is incredibly smooth, and even though we bought it used, it is in pristine condition with only 88K miles. We are running it with Goodyear tires, and even though we have the base model, it is still pretty good. I did not want the factory navigation since I use Waze anyway, and my kid uses his iPad mounted on the headrest. It's a win-win for us!

  2. Cristobal Ritchie 2024-10-07

Our 2012 Sienna van with only 3000 miles has been making a thumping noise when applying the brakes. Despite taking it in for service three times, the first two times the service department claimed they didn't hear anything. However, on the third visit, a mechanic heard the noise and suggested that the brake pads were moving, which is considered normal according to a TSB. However, I believe that this is not normal and that Toyota should investigate further. Have any other 2012 Sienna owners experienced this issue? Rest assured, we will continue to pursue a resolution with Toyota until this issue is resolved.

The Navigation System could use some improvement. It may not be immediately intuitive and there have been some occasional bugs. Additionally, I have had some difficulty transferring my phone contacts. I have also noticed that the fuel efficiency seems to be lower than expected, averaging around 14 miles per gallon instead of the promised 25 miles per gallon. On the bright side, there are plenty of cup holders available!

  4. Nicolas Skiles 2024-07-16

I am having some trouble with the Nav system in my 2012 Sienna and I was hoping to find a solution. I have noticed that the Nav system sometimes makes poor decisions, which can add time to my trip. Additionally, I have found that it can be difficult to hear the instructions when the radio is on, as it does not turn down the radio volume. I have had better experiences with other Nav systems in the past, but I am hopeful that there is a solution to this issue. Thank you for your help!

  5. Hiram Mann 2024-05-19

We purchased a Sienna XLE with premium package. Despite having only 900 miles on the odometer, we have experienced rattles from the rear seats and the dashboard. We have taken it back to the dealer once, but the issue remains unresolved, and we will be returning it again. It is disappointing to encounter such quality issues. Our previous vehicle was a 2004 Odyssey, which did not have these problems.

Positive 2012 Toyota Sienna car reviews

  1. Edwardo Hauck 2025-01-07

I have owned both a 2006 and a 2012 Sienna, and while I initially loved the newer model, I was disappointed to find some interior items of lesser quality. The door seals were poor and allowed dirt to enter the interior frame, and the cabin was noisier due to the lousy seals. Additionally, I had to pay $150 to fix a rubber window seal that had come loose on the driver's side, and the plastic surround on the driver's seat split and had to be held together with duct tape. These issues are not what I expected from a car that costs $30,000. Although I have had some expensive repairs, I plan to keep this car for a couple more years. However, unless Toyota improves the interior, I am uncertain if I will purchase another Sienna, even though I found it to be the best of all the minivans I tried.

  2. Orion Brekke 2024-10-20

If you have a family, this car is a great choice. It's incredibly reliable, and as long as you take it to the dealer for maintenance every 10k miles, you'll be in good hands. It's best to avoid other service providers or local mechanics.

  3. Reyes Tremblay 2024-10-01

I've bought and sold plenty of cars and SUVs, but in terms of comfort, fuel efficiency, and loading capacity for long travels with kids, this one is the best.

  4. Omari Herzog 2024-09-27

I purchased my Toyota 4 years ago with 62,000 KM on it. Since then, I have driven it for 107,000 kms, including hauling a 17-foot single-axis trailer frequently. Despite the hard, real-world driving, this vehicle has been incredibly reliable. I have only needed to do oil changes and one set of brakes in 100,000 kms! It starts without any issues even in -35 degree weather and safely and comfortably transports my family wherever we need to go. The middle row captain 'lazyboys' are especially comfortable. Although the fuel economy could be better, the reliability more than makes up for it. If you're in the market for a used, reliable family hauler, I highly recommend this vehicle. It's especially great for towing. I previously owned a Honda, but its brakes couldn't handle towing even a lighter pop-up trailer and would warp every summer. If you're looking to create a fun family hauler, consider getting one with AWD and putting a 3.5 inch lift on it - it's a thing! This turns the mom soccer van into a capable overlander.

  5. Colton Kuphal 2024-09-10

Driving this van over 200k miles!
