2013 Toyota Sienna problems

The Toyota Sienna is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Toyota primarily for the North American market. It is named for the Italian city of Siena, in the region of Tuscany. It replaced the first generation Previa van in 1997 with a more conventional front-wheel drive layout and shares a heavily revised platform with the Camry. Both the Previa and original Sienna were smaller than the other minivans they competed against, but a redesign in 2003 (for the 2004 model year) increased the dimensions to match those of its competitors.

It was redesigned again in 2010 (for the 2011 model year). The third generation Sienna went on sale in the United States in February 2010 and is the first Sienna to ever receive a "Top Safety Pick" award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. A 2020 redesign (for the 2021 model year) saw the Sienna becoming a hybrid vehicle for its fourth generation. While previous generations of the Sienna were exported to select Asian and European markets, the fourth generation is the first to be produced outside of the United States as Chinese production commenced in July 2021 by two Toyota joint ventures. In China, it is also marketed as the Toyota Granvia.

Following the discontinuation of General Motors's all-wheel drive minivans in 2006, the Sienna was the only minivan in its class offered with AWD in North America until the 2021 Chrysler Pacifica was introduced with an AWD option in 2020.

The Sienna is not available in Japan and Australia as it is not produced in a right-hand drive configuration, and the segment in these countries is already occupied by the Alphard/Vellfire and the HiAce/Granvia respectively.

As of the fourth generation, introduced in 2020, the Sienna is now built on Toyota's TNGA-K platform, which it shares with most of Toyota’s other large MPVs and crossovers.

Common 2013 Toyota Sienna problems

The 2013 Toyota Sienna is known for its solid reliability, with RepairPal rating it 4.0 out of 5.0 in reliability and an 8th rank out of 32 segment competitors. However, there are some common issues that potential buyers should be aware of:

  • Loss of engine power: Owners of the 2007 Sienna have reported losing engine power whenever they slow down, accompanied by transmission problems like jerking and slipping. The source of this issue remains undetermined.
  • Cracking dashboard: The Sienna's dashboard is prone to cracking, which is an unsightly issue that may cost thousands of dollars to fix by replacing the dash altogether.
  • Transmission failure: Older Toyota Siennas, including the 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008 models, are relatively prone to transmission failure at around 78,000 miles. The vehicle's RPM increases but fails to pick up speed, and the potential fix is to replace the transmission system, which may cost over $3,000.
  • Power door issues: There's a chance a Sienna's power door may stop working, which is a considerable safety risk. This may be an issue with the door's cable, which may have been damaged.

For the 2013 Toyota Sienna specifically, there are two common issues based on owner complaints:

  • Excessive battery drain: Some owners have reported a failure to start due to excessive battery drain, which is caused by accessories left on when the vehicle is off.
  • Broken rear window: Owners have reported broken rear windows, particularly in colder climates where the defroster may cause the glass to break due to the change in temperature.

These problems are less severe than in other minivans from 2013, and repair costs are average.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-07-07
  • VIN: 5TDJK3DC5DS
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: Anyone: In 2013 I bought a new Toyota Sienna from Fiore Toyota in Hollidaysburg, PA. It was advertised with a lifetime engine and powertrain warranty. I thought that I had made a wise purchased. Fast forward to 2022. In early June I noticed a loud humming from the rear differential area and since I had a family vacation planned with my son’s family I decided to take it in for diagnosis to my local dealer, Colonial Toyota of Indiana, PA. They said that it was the electromagnetic control unit but could not get me in for over a week and that it was not advisable to drive long distance. This resulted in my rented a replacement vehicle – an unanticipated expense. When I returned I took the vehicle into Colonial on July 7th and asked if the part would be covered under the lifetime warranty. They said they would check it out. There were several slow responses between the garage and the warranty company. Requests for additional service records, VIN numbers and what not. Meanwhile I am without a vehicle. Colonial had said that the part should be covered under the contract. Also Colonial’s lifetime warranty was a different company than Fiore’s insurer. Who knew? I had assumed that it was all a Toyota thing. Meanwhile after 8 days of no vehicle and another trip to Colorado approaching, (Granddaughter living alone while her husband is deployed in Poland.), I pulled the trigger and said fix the vehicle as I needed it. My thoughts were that it was a Toyota vehicle, serviced by Toyota “certified” techs at a Toyota garage what else would I need? The day after repairs were initiated, the warranty company says that they will need a 3rd party inspection to verify the defect. Just reinstall the broken part so they can hear it and then reinstall the new part or no coverage. Also this was to take place after I should have been half way across the country. Needless to say I didn’t do it. What good is a warranty that doesn’t trust Toyota techs? Out over $2500

STEERING,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-04-06
  • VIN: 5TDKK3DC0DS
  • Components: STEERING,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Starting about two years ago, the traction/ABS lights come on between 20-35 mph on a gradual curve or randomly while driving. The brakes come on, like an ABS event, even though the brakes are not applied. The car will jerk to the right or left and chatters/vibrates. The mechanic said the brakes, tire wear and pressure, and suspension are all in very good condition and there are not traction control or ABS codes. This does not appear to be normal wear and is dangerous. We can only drive it on short trips for fear of getting in an accident. I decided to look online and found that hundreds of Toyota owners are experiencing the same symptoms. (https://www.cargurus.com/Cars/Discussion-c9152_ds656326). Can anything be done so that Toyota will come up with a solution? Thank you.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-07-17
  • VIN: 5TDYK3DC2DS
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: I was driving down the street and then my car lurched forward, the engine revving up. It is a 2013 Sienna XLE V6 & it had 113,000 miles on it. I had to STOMP on the brake to get it to stop.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-01-04
  • VIN: 5TDYK3DC8DS
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: After a big snow storm I cleaned the car off and warmed it up, then tried to open the passenger side power door from the inside side with the button. The passanger side would not open (driver's side did) so I tried to open it manually from the outside and then the inside. It would not open at all. Then as I was driving, the car started beeping and the 'door open' icon lit up on the dashboard. I stopped the car and again tried to manually push the door shut as it appeared to be slightly ajar at this point. It seemed to close but the light and beep stayed on for my 10 minute drive home. When I got home I inspected more and noticed a wire for the power door had snapped at some point, I assume from the cold because it was operable the evening before. At this point I cannot open that door manually either, it is completely stuck shut, which I feel is a safety issue as my kids only have one point of egress. I did some research and this seems to match the description of one of the recalls but I was told my vehicle was not included based on the VIN #.

SEAT BELTS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-12-24
  • VIN: 5tdkk3dc0ds
  • Components: SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: A few days ago the seat belt sensor would continue to beep and blink even after the seat belt was fastened. Then, on Friday, December 24th, 2021, a piece popped out of the seat belt latching mechanism on the driver's seat. Now it is difficult to get the seat belt to latch, and I am unsure that the latch would hold if the vehicle was in an accident that could cause serious injury to the driver. This is available to be inspected upon request. I haven't taken this to be looked at yet, but would like to know if this is something that I would have to pay for or if the manufacturer would cover the cost of this repair.

TIRES PROBLEM

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-10-04
  • VIN: 5TDYK3DC3DS
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: SRS Airbag check issue. Last few days, my car has been showing following symptoms 1) Day 1: SRS airbag check warning is flashing on the display. The passenger airbag is always OFF regardless of the passenger being seated or not. 2) Day 2: SRS airbag check warning goes away, but passenger seat airbag is always ON regardless of anyone sitting or not. Also the seat belt chime is sounded for the passenger seat. 3) Day 5: SRS airbag check warning comes back and passenger airbag is OFF. (same as Day 1). The auto mechanic says there is a code about Occupant classification system that is malfunctioning. Dealer wants to charge me a lot of money just to get it inspected and diagnosed. The car has not been in any collision. This seems like totally Toyota's design and part reliability issue. In no condition the driver or passenger safety should be compromised in such manner. Yet Toyota dealership is not standing behind their mfg commitment to safe driving experience.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-08-16
  • VIN: 5TDYK3DC8DS
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
  • Summary: This is to advise you of a safety issue with our 2013 Toyota Sienna XLE Minivan having a V6 (3.5L) engine. Our vehicle currently has 118,169 miles on it and has been well maintained. This vehicle was purchased new and is operated primarily in Florida where we live. Over the last 6 - 10 months on three occasions our Sienna Minivan suddenly lurched forward as the engine revved up. On all three occasions, I had to take quick action and with significant force press the brake pedal as well as place the minivan in neutral and then into park in order to stop our minivan from surging forward and hitting the car in front of me. On all three occasions, my right foot was on the brake pedal when this occurred and on two of the three occasions, our minivan was slowly accelerating from either a stopped position or a very low speed (5 mph or less). On one of the occasions I was approaching an intersection with a stop sign and our minivan was decelerating to a stop when the engine revved up and the minivan surged forward. This occurred as our minivan was going approximately 5 - 10 mph. There were no warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms prior to any of these incidents. I have reported this condition to our local Toyota Dealer but they said they could not duplicate the issue during their test drive. This is a serious safety condition and one that could result in a serious accident with injuries particularly if the driver is not quick to react to this unexpected condition.

  • VIN: 5TDJK3DC9DS
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: I have been notified by my Toyota dealership that the rear viscous coupler on my Sienna has failed and that the RAV4s have been recalled for this same part as a safety issue ( years ago). This part is a known manufacturing defect. Forums are wallpapered with complaints about this for years, I've already lodged a complaint with Toyota but they are doing nothing. Customers should not be on the hook for a $2500 repair that is a known manufacturing defect. The coupler recall should be extended to the Siennas!

Toyota is also recalling certain 2009 Scion xB, Toyota Corolla, Corolla Matrix, Yaris, Lexus IS250, IS350, ES350, IS-F, and Pontiac Vibe vehicles ever registered in the states of AK, CO, CT, ID, IA, ME, MA, MI, MN, MT, NH, NY, ND, OR, RI, SD, UT, VT, WA, WI, and WY or "Zone C." These vehicles are equipped with certain air bag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal air bag modules used as original equipment or replacement equipment. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger frontal air bag, these inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling.
  • Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Toyota will notify the Toyota, Scion and Lexus owners. General Motors will contact the Pontiac owners. Depending on the vehicle model, dealers will replace the front passenger air bag inflator, or replace the air bag assembly. The recall began on January 29, 2018. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331, or Pontiac customer service at 1-800-762-2737. • Manufacturer: Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC
  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:SENSOR/CONTROL MODULE-INACTIVE
  • Summary: Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) is recalling certain models interspersed through model years 2009 through 2013 as follows: model year 2009-2012 Tacoma, 4Runner, Camry, Camry Hybrid, Prius, and RAV4; model year 2009-2010 Avalon, FJ Cruiser, and Highlander Hybrid; model year 2010-2013 model year Corolla, Sienna and Tundra; model year 2009-2013 Highlander and Venza; model year 2012 Prius V; and model year 2010-2012 Sequoia. During modification by SET to include accessories such as leather seat covers, seat heaters or headrest DVD systems, these vehicles may not have had the passenger seat occupant sensing system calibration tested. Without passing the calibration test, the occupant sensing system may not operate as designed.
  • Consequence: If the front passenger seat occupant sensing system is out of calibration, the front passenger airbags may not deploy or they may deploy inappropriately for the passenger's size and position. This could increase the risk of personal injury during the event of a vehicle crash necessitating airbag deployment.

Your van has been a reliable vehicle and I love driving it. However, I have noticed a few issues. The brakes need to be replaced every 20-25k and new rotors are needed every 40k. I opted for aftermarket Power Stop rotors and Akebono ceramic pads, which have been working well. The tires also need to be replaced every 30k miles, which can be expensive at $1100 per set. The original tires that came with the van only lasted 23k miles and were completely bald. The front struts went at 90k miles, and the front lower control arms both went at 100k miles. The tie rods and CV joints also needed to be replaced at 100k miles. Both front door lock actuators went out, and the dealer wanted $750 to replace them. However, I was able to purchase both for $100 and replace them myself in just an hour. I understand that driving in Los Angeles traffic can be tough on cars, but I also had a 2005 Sienna that had the same issues with brakes, rotors, and tires.

We've had our van for almost two years now, and unfortunately, we've had to make some repairs to it. We had to fix the rear hatch motor and moon roof, which were both quite expensive. Additionally, the window seals have rotted, and both fog light trim pieces have fallen off. The driver's seat cushion is also cracking badly, and the paint on the roof is bleaching. While this isn't the Toyota quality we were expecting, we can't speak to the drivetrain reliability as it only has 62,000 miles. We recently decided to trade the van in for an SUV, and we ended up purchasing a 2017 Ford Expedition. Although we've had some issues with our Toyotas in the past, we're excited to try something new.

It looks like there's no air compression in the number 6 cylinder, which means we'll need to repair or replace it. Unfortunately, this can cost thousands of dollars, which can make the car seem worthless. I know it sounds harsh, but Toyota motor actual data suggests that it's only good for up to 120K miles, which can make it difficult to find any residual value.

Hey there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2013 Toyota Sienna that I bought in January of that year. It's been a great car so far, with less than 2000 miles on it. However, I did notice that at 60% weight load capacity, the ground clearance goes down to about 5 inches. Recently, I even got honked at on the highway by someone who wanted me to pull over and check out the rear. According to the Toyota User Manual, the weight load capacity is 1355lbs, but even the dealer suggested that I buy an aftermarket solution to fix the issue. I think it's important to note that this could be a safety issue, so please be careful. Also, I wouldn't recommend installing a tow hitch for a bicycle or anything like that, as the van's rear suspension is too weak to handle the weight of bicycles. Stay safe out there!

I recently traded in my 2015 Toyota Camry for a 2015 Toyota Sienna. However, after purchasing the vehicle, I discovered an issue with the radio. When attempting to scroll through my last dialed list on my paired cell phone, the radio channel would change instead. I reached out to my dealership, who contacted Toyota Corp about the problem. They suggested replacing the radio, but even with the new radio, the issue persisted. I then contacted Toyota Corp directly, and they informed me that the XLE model of my vehicle does not have the same feature as my previous Camry or the base model Sienna. While this absence of a feature is frustrating, it is important to note that it does not impact the safety of the vehicle. I urge potential buyers to consider this before making a purchase, but overall, I am still satisfied with my Toyota Sienna.

We purchased this van brand new after being hit on the side with our 2012 Sienna. We decided to buy the exact same model, but a 2013 version. The van held up nicely despite being a complete loss. I believe it was a Volkswagen Passat or Jetta that came flying out of a parking lot and hit us on the passenger side. Our 2013 van has been great overall. We did experience a few issues that were covered under our Toyota extended warranty. The cam actuator went out or was clogged, but the dealership replaced it. They tried flushing the oil first, but that only worked temporarily. After that, I started changing the oil at 7500 miles instead of 10,000. Also, the bottom control arm was worn, so they replaced one. I had to replace the other one out of warranty. Recently, at around 230,000 miles, I noticed some smoke coming out of the hood and a light on the dash. The van stalled shortly after and was completely dead. I replaced the alternator and water pump, which took me about 6 hours for both. Overall, it has been a great experience, and I would definitely buy another one.

I bought a 2013 Toyota Sienna LE in Nov 2012 and I absolutely love it! It has never given me any problems in the 9 years I've owned it and has never left me stranded. Unfortunately, I recently got into an accident and now I'm in the market for a new one. It's surprising to see that used ones are being sold for almost the same price as a brand new one! Nonetheless, I still have a soft spot for the 2013 Sienna.

The 2013 Toyota Sienna Limited is an excellent choice for road trips and vacations. It boasts a variety of safety features, including Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Rear and Front Parking Sensors, Power Sliding Door with Jam Protection, and a Backup Camera. The Sienna is also incredibly comfortable, with a leg rest in the 2nd row and a rear entertainment screen for watching movies and shows from DVD. The cargo space in the trunk is spacious, providing plenty of room for everything you need, and the 3rd row seats are equipped with cup holders and a storage box. Additionally, the trunk and 2nd row have a household outlet to charge your phone or kids' tablet. Overall, the 2013 Toyota Sienna Limited is the perfect minivan for all your needs, especially road trips and long vacations.

I really like this car! The seats are super comfy and the tech is easy to use. The only issue I've had is with the voice navigation, but I just stick to using Waze instead. Overall, it's a great family hauler and I especially love the captains chairs in the back. We've taken it on trips to Vegas (from L.A.) and to San Diego, and it's been a smooth ride with minimal repairs needed. We've put 17k miles on it!
