2000 Toyota Sienna problems
The Toyota Sienna is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Toyota primarily for the North American market. It is named for the Italian city of Siena, in the region of Tuscany. It replaced the first generation Previa van in 1997 with a more conventional front-wheel drive layout and shares a heavily revised platform with the Camry. Both the Previa and original Sienna were smaller than the other minivans they competed against, but a redesign in 2003 (for the 2004 model year) increased the dimensions to match those of its competitors.
It was redesigned again in 2010 (for the 2011 model year). The third generation Sienna went on sale in the United States in February 2010 and is the first Sienna to ever receive a "Top Safety Pick" award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. A 2020 redesign (for the 2021 model year) saw the Sienna becoming a hybrid vehicle for its fourth generation. While previous generations of the Sienna were exported to select Asian and European markets, the fourth generation is the first to be produced outside of the United States as Chinese production commenced in July 2021 by two Toyota joint ventures. In China, it is also marketed as the Toyota Granvia.
Following the discontinuation of General Motors's all-wheel drive minivans in 2006, the Sienna was the only minivan in its class offered with AWD in North America until the 2021 Chrysler Pacifica was introduced with an AWD option in 2020.
The Sienna is not available in Japan and Australia as it is not produced in a right-hand drive configuration, and the segment in these countries is already occupied by the Alphard/Vellfire and the HiAce/Granvia respectively.
As of the fourth generation, introduced in 2020, the Sienna is now built on Toyota's TNGA-K platform, which it shares with most of Toyota’s other large MPVs and crossovers.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-07-19
- VIN: 4T3ZF19C1YU
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I had my car's brake lines replaced at McGee Toyota in Hanover MA on June 20, 2023. On July 19, 2023, my wife and I had just exited the interstate, and were stopping at a grocery store on our way home. I tried to brake upon entering the parking lot and the brake pedal sank to the floor. There was no resistance when I tried pumping the brakes. Fortunately, I was traveling at a slow speed and there were no moving cars in the lot, so I was able to safely stop the car without an accident. I had the car towed to McGee for repairs and the next day was told the catastrophic brake failure was due to a defective part. Since this would likely have had much more serious consequences such as serious injuries or worse if the failure occurred on the exit ramp or at the busy state highway intersection in front of the grocery store, I wanted to report it to be sure it doesn't happen to someone else.
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-06-28
- VIN: 4T3ZF13C8YU
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: I have a 2000 Sienna with 305000 miles. I have never had trouble with this vehicle until about 2 weeks ago. When I am stopped and my car is in drive, I just tap the gas pedal for a second and the engine RPM will increase to about 2000 RPM and will stay there until I put the car in neutral or turn the engine off. This is a problem because my breaks barely hold this and I must put the car into neutral for the car to stop pulling forward. Putting the car into neutral resets the rpm. If there is no car in front of me, I can release the brakes and the vehicle will continue to accelerate until the transmission switches to second gear, at this point I can drive normally. One time the vehicle continued to accelerate even after switching gears, I put the vehicle into neutral and the engine went to over 4000 RPM, the brakes could not stop the vehicle, I had to turn the engine off. The gas pedal is not sticky or stuck, floor mats are not in the vehicle. I can rev the engine normally when I am in park, this only happens when I am in gear. I have checked the Throttle Body, Throttle Position Sensor and disabled the cruise control module, I can see no reason for this to happen. I have seen many complaints about this same issue online but have not found a resolution. I can buy an ECM but this is an expensive trial. I will take it to the dealer from here.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-07-01
- VIN: 4T3ZF13C8YU
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: OUTER DOOR HANDLES ON DOORS OF SIENNA ARE EXTREMELY BRITTLE AND BREAK EASILY EVEN WITH NORMAL EVERYDAY GENTLE USE. OF THE 4 MAIN DOORS ON MY TOYOTA SIENNA, 3 OF THEM NOW HAVE BROKEN OUSISE HANDLES CAUSING THE DOORS NOT TO BE ACCESSIBLE & OPENED FROM THE OUTSIDE. THIS HAS NOW AFFECTED BOTH SLIDING DOORS AND MY PASSENGER FRONT DOOR. MY PASSENGER SLIDING DOOR IS NOT EVEN ABLE TO BE OPENED FROM THE INSIDE SINCE THE OUTER HANDLE BROKE OFF COMPLETELY. THIS POSES A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE AS DOORS ARE NOT ABLE TO BE OPENED FROM THE OUTSIDE IN CASE OF AN ACCIDENT OR EMERGENCY. ADDITIONALLY THE FACT THAT THE PASSENGER SLIDING DOOR CAN NOT EVEN BE OPENED FROM THE INSIDE CAUSES EVEN MORE OF A SAFETY ISSUE. UPON REVIEWING OTHER CONSUMERS WHO OWN THIS SAME VEHICLE I HAVE FOUND IT ALARMING THAT WELL OVER 50% OF THEM HAVE COMPLAINTS DUE TO THIS SAME ISSUE.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-04-03
- VIN: 4T3ZF13C6YU
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: YESTERDAY AFTERNOON, I WAS DRIVING ON A SEMI BUSY ROAD IN TUCSON, ARIZONA AT ABOUT 40 MPH AND THE VAN SUDDENLY BEGAN TO ACCELERATE. I IMMEDIATELY THOUGHT I HAD HIT THE CRUISE CONTROL BUTTON BUT THE DASH SHOWED NO INDICATION THAT THIS WAS CASE. I REPEATEDLY PUSHED THE CRUISE CONTROL BUTTON AND JIGGLED THE LEVER ARM HOPING TO TOGGLE SOMETHING OFF BUT IT HAD NO EFFECT. I BEGAN TO PUSH THE BREAKS BUT THEY WERE NOT CAPABLE OF SLOWING THE CAR BELOW ABOUT 25. I THREW THE VAN INTO NEUTRAL AND THE ENGINE REVVED UP TO ABOUT 7000 RPM. THAT SOUND CONCERNED ME SO I THREW IT BACK INTO GEAR AND THE VAN BEGAN TO ACCELERATE AGAIN. I PUSHED THE EMERGENCY BREAKS, AND WITH MY PEDAL BREAK FULLY COMPRESSED I COULD GET THE CAR TO 5-10 MPH BUT THERE WAS ABSOLUTELY NO WAY TO STOP THE VAN. AFTER NARROWLY MISSING A PEDESTRIAN, I TURNED RIGHT, FOUND A PLACE TO PULL OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, THREW THE VAN INTO NEUTRAL AND QUICKLY TURNED THE VAN OFF. WITH THE ENGINE TURNED OFF THE BREAKS WERE AS EFFECTIVE AS THE SHOULD HAVE BEEN SO THE THE VAN CAME TO A STOP. AFTER A BRIEF PERIOD I TURNED THE KEY, STARTED THE VAN AND, AGAIN, THE ENGINE AGAIN REVVED TO 7000 RPM. I TURNED IT OFF AGAIN. I PUMPED THE ACCELERATOR SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE STARTING IT AGAIN AND IT STARTED UP FINE. I HAD THE VAN TOWED AFTER THIS AND I'M NOT LIKELY TO DRIVE IT AGAIN.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-08-27
- VIN: 413ZF13CXTU
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: WHILE PARKING THE VEHICLE AND CURBING THE TIRES ON A MEDIUM DOWNWARD GRADE, WITH CAR IN "DRIVE" AND MY RIGHT FOOT FULLY ON THE BRAKE PEDAL, THE ENGINE SUDDENLY AND UNEXPECTEDLY WENT FULL THROTTLE. BY APPLYING MAXIMUM PRESSURE ON THE BRAKE PEDAL, I WAS ABLE TO SLOW THE FORWARD MOTION OF THE VEHICLE AS IT JUMPED THE CURB, HEADING FOR THE WALL OF A LOCAL SCHOOL. BY CONTINUING APPLYING MAXIMUM BRAKE PRESSURE AND DISENGAGING THE TRANSMISSION, I WAS ABLE TO STOP THE VEHICLE...APPROXIMATELY TWO FEET SHORT OF IMPACT WITH THE WALL. BY GOOD FORTUNE, THERE WERE ON INJURIES, AND NO PROPERTY DAMAGE. BUT IT COULD HAVE BEEN A TRAGEDY. THERE WAS A FUNCTION AT THE SCHOOL ON THE DAY OF THE INCIDENT, AND PARENTS WITH CHILDREN WERE ON THE SIDEWALK IN THE AREA BOTH BEFORE AND AFTER THE INCIDENT. UPON STOPPING THE CAR AND TURNING OFF THE ENGINE, I IMMEDIATELY CHECKED MAT POSITIONS, MY FOOT POSITIONS, AND THE THROTTLE PEDAL AREA. THE WAS ABSOLUTELY NO INTERFERENCE BETWEEN THE MAT AND THE THROTTLE PEDAL, NOR ANY CONTACT OR INTERFERENCE OF ANY KIND WITH THE PEDAL. AS I CONSIDERED THE CAR FAR TOO DANGEROUS TO DRIVE AT THAT POINT, I HAD IT TOWED BACK TO MY RESIDENCE. INSPECTION OF THE VEHICLE AND FURTHER ACTION IS PENDING.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2002-01-01

- Summary: POWER DOOR ISSUE WHEN STATIONARY. I PURCHASED MY 2000 SIENNA AND WITHIN A YEAR I HAD ISSUES WITH MY POWER DOOR. IT WOULD OPEN BY POWER BUT NOT CLOSE. AS TIME WENT ON IT WOULD NEITHER OPEN NOR CLOSE. AND NOW THE POWER LIGHTS HAS BEEN LIT FOR YEARS. I TOOK CAR TO THE DEALER MANY TIMES WHEN THIS FIRST HAPPENED AND SEVERAL TIMES OVER THE ENSUING YEARS THEY COULD "NEVER" FIND A PROBLEM. THEN ON MY LAST VISIT THEY CLAIMED THE DOOR WAS DAMAGED DUE TO AN ACCIDENT I HAD...MIND YOU I NEVER HAD AN ACCIDENT AND BOUGHT A CERTIFIED USED CAR FROM DEALER. TO THIS DAY THE POWER DOOR IS DISENGAGED AND HAS TO BE MANUALLY OPENED AND CLOSED. NOW I SEE SO MANY YEARS LATER THAT THIS IS ACTUALLY AN ISSUE WITH THE DOOR...TOYOTA NEEDS TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-09-06
- VIN: 4T3ZF13C3YU
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE
- Summary: WITHIN A TWO MINUTE PERIOD, BOTH SLIDING DOORS THAT WERE PREVIOUSLY FUNCTIONING, SUDDENLY FAILED IN A CLOSED POSITION. THEY COULD NOT BE OPENED MANUALLY USING THE DOOR HANDLES FROM BOTH INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE VEHICLE, OR BY ATTEMPTING TO ACTUATE THE RIGHT SIDE POWER DOOR. THE POWER DOOR LOCKS HAD NO EFFECT. THERE WAS NO DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE THAT COULD HAVE CAUSED MECHANICAL DOOR FAILURE, OR OTHERWISE. NON FUNCTIONING OR JAMMED DOORS SHOULD CONSTITUTE A SAFETY ISSUE AND SHOULD BE RECALLED. IF THE VEHICLES FRONT DOORS WERE COMPROMISED IN A COLLISION, PASSENGERS SHOULD BE ABLE TO EXIT THROUGH THE REAR DOORS, BUT WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO WITH THIS MECHANICAL DEFECT. THE FACT THAT THE DOORS CANNOT ALSO BE OPENED USING EXTERIOR HANDLES INCREASES THE RISK OF ENTRAPPING PASSENGERS. TOYOTA SHOULD CONSIDER THIS A SAFETY RECALL AND REPAIR ALL FAULTY DOORS, OF WHICH THERE ARE MANY COMPLAINTS FILED HERE AND ON ONLINE FORUMS. I AM CURRENTLY HAVING TO PAY FOR THIS REPAIR MYSELF, AS TOYOTA HAS INFORMED ME THAT THERE ARE NO CURRENT RECALLS. THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION. *TR

We purchased this van as a certified used vehicle in 2003 with only 28k miles. It has been a fantastic van, and even with 103k miles, it is still going strong. Although the interior space is slightly smaller than our previous Previa, it has been more than adequate. We have had very few repairs beyond normal service since we have owned it. At one point, we had to replace the window guides and an O2 sensor. The leather is starting to show signs of wear, but it is still in good shape overall. The gas mileage has been around 18 in the city and 23-24 on the highway (I tend to drive fast). I would definitely purchase this van again without any hesitation.

I ordered my Sienna sight-unseen over the internet. I was living in Ft Smith, AR. I had gone into the Toyota dealer there, but unfortunately, they weren't interested in making a deal and didn't even have a Sienna on the showroom floor. Luckily, I submitted a search using Autobuytel and the Tulsa, OK dealer contacted me. They offered me a great deal on a Sienna CE. I picked up my new Sienna on a rainy afternoon in late September and immediately fell in love with it on the 95 mile drive home to Ft Smith that day. It handles like a dream, and unlike other cars that feel top-heavy and don't maneuver well at speed, the Sienna sticks to the road like a champ!

This is an excellent family vehicle. Although there are some minor issues such as weak brakes, a rattle in the rear (found in plastic panels and fixed with foam tape), and confusing accessory controls on the steering wheel, it is still a small price to pay for unequaled dependability and family safety.

You got your Sienna in 1999 when the new Honda van just came out. You couldn't even find one to test drive. You looked at the Sienna and the Villager and it was a no contest. This van is great to drive, allows flexible seating and storage, and is extremely durable. You just paid it off and are looking forward to driving it for another four years.

Dealing with Toyota dealers has been the biggest challenge. However, the van has proven to be reliable even after 36000 miles, although the brake light has come on several times. The air pressure light is a bit too sensitive and the air conditioner stopped working after only 2 weeks of bringing it home. When my lease was up, I switched to a Honda Odyssey which is twice the size of the van and much more affordable. I found that the Goodyear tires were not very durable and had to replace them after only 12000 miles.

After two successive mediocre Chrysler minivans, I decided to purchase the Sienna. I was looking for a reliable vehicle, and the Sienna has definitely delivered in that area. While there are some ergonomic issues, such as not enough adjustment in the tilt wheel and power seat, and the radio and controls on the steering wheel being in poor locations, overall I am satisfied with my purchase. The leather armrest finish work could be improved, and the van tends to have some rattles unless it is fully loaded. However, I still believe that the Sienna is a great choice and I am happy with my decision to lease it.

Our Sienna has had some serious reliability issues, despite being a five year old van with relatively low mileage. In the past 12 months, we've had to replace a front axle, transmission, driver's & passenger seat belts, and driver's exterior door handle. Fortunately, our dealer has been very helpful and has covered all costs except for the $200 door handle. Recently, we discovered that we need a new ABS control module ($1800) and the spare tire wench won't lower the spare tire ($160). Although the dealer has declined to cover these items, we have formally appealed to corp. grievance. While the last two years have been disappointing, we still have fond memories of the first three years with the van.

We had a bit of trouble with our Sienna XLE developing an oil sludge problem, even though we were diligent about getting oil changes every 3200 miles. Unfortunately, since we didn't get the oil changes done at the dealership, Toyota initially denied our warranty claim. We were also frustrated that Toyota denied that there was a sludge problem with their engines. We ended up spending thousands of dollars on repairs. However, we were lucky enough to find an honest repairman at another dealership who helped us get a rebuilt engine for free. Although the first rebuilt engine turned out to be a lemon, the initial dealership replaced it for us. In the end, we decided to trade in our Toyota and switch to a Nissan, which we absolutely love! After owning 5 Toyotas and a Lexus, we've decided to try something new.

Although this Toyota has had some issues, it is important to note that these are isolated incidents and not representative of the overall quality of the vehicle. Toyota is committed to providing top-notch vehicles and continuously improving their designs. While there may be room for improvement, this van is still a reliable and safe choice for families on the go.
