1998 Toyota Sienna problems
The Toyota Sienna is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Toyota primarily for the North American market. It is named for the Italian city of Siena, in the region of Tuscany. It replaced the first generation Previa van in 1997 with a more conventional front-wheel drive layout and shares a heavily revised platform with the Camry. Both the Previa and original Sienna were smaller than the other minivans they competed against, but a redesign in 2003 (for the 2004 model year) increased the dimensions to match those of its competitors.
It was redesigned again in 2010 (for the 2011 model year). The third generation Sienna went on sale in the United States in February 2010 and is the first Sienna to ever receive a "Top Safety Pick" award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. A 2020 redesign (for the 2021 model year) saw the Sienna becoming a hybrid vehicle for its fourth generation. While previous generations of the Sienna were exported to select Asian and European markets, the fourth generation is the first to be produced outside of the United States as Chinese production commenced in July 2021 by two Toyota joint ventures. In China, it is also marketed as the Toyota Granvia.
Following the discontinuation of General Motors's all-wheel drive minivans in 2006, the Sienna was the only minivan in its class offered with AWD in North America until the 2021 Chrysler Pacifica was introduced with an AWD option in 2020.
The Sienna is not available in Japan and Australia as it is not produced in a right-hand drive configuration, and the segment in these countries is already occupied by the Alphard/Vellfire and the HiAce/Granvia respectively.
As of the fourth generation, introduced in 2020, the Sienna is now built on Toyota's TNGA-K platform, which it shares with most of Toyota’s other large MPVs and crossovers.

ON OCTOBER 2, 2013 I WROTE TO TOYOTA FOLLOWING THE INSPECTION AND ATTACHED THE ORIGINAL WORK ORDER FROM A TOYOTA DEALER FOR THE REPLACEMENT OF PART NUMBER "51900-08010" AS REQUIRED. I RECEIVED AN OCTOBER 17TH RESPONSE SAYING I NEEDED TO PROVIDE ANSWERS TO THREE QUESTIONS:REASON THE VEHICLE BROUGHT INTO THE REPAIR FACILITY; THE REPAIR FACILITY DIAGNOSES, AND THE REPAIR PERFORMED IN ORDER TO CORRECT THE CONCERN. AFTER SEVERAL TELEPHONE CALLS TO TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE AND AGAIN HAVING THE CURRENT CABLE REINSPECTED, OBTAINING AND FORWARDING COPIES OF THE REPAIR ORDER, PROOF OF PAYMENT, AND OWNERSHIP OF THE VEHICLE FOR REPAIR WORK PERFORMED BY A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP USING AN IDENTICAL PART NUMBER FOR REIMBURSEMENT ELIGIBILITY, I WAS DIRECTED TO CONTACT THE MANAGER AT THE DEALERSHIP AND OBTAIN WRITTEN INFORMATION ON THE CAUSE OF THE BREAKAGE THAT OCCURRED NEARLY TEN YEARS EARLIER AND THAT I NEEDED TO CONTACT HIM BECAUSE HE WAS NOT RESPONDING TO THE CORPORATE CUSTOMER SERVICE OFFICE. ALTHOUGH I'VE DONE EVERYTHING REQUIRED, SOMETIMES MORE THAN ONCE, HAD REPAIRS COMPLETED USING THE PROPER PART NUMBER, AS SHOWN ON THE REPAIR WORKSHEET ISSUED BY A TOYOTA DEALER, I'VE BEEN DENIED REIMBURSEMENT DUE TO TOYOTA'S OWN DEALERSHIP REPAIR MANAGER'S LACK OF COOPERATION. IF THE REPAIRS WERE NOT DUE TO THE CABLE BREAKAGE AND IF THE REPLACEMENT PART WAS NOT NEEDED, WHY DID THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP DO THE REPAIR AND CHARGE ME FOR IT? COPIES - LETTERS AND RECEIPTS WILL BE PROVIDED, IF NEEDED. *TR

We bought this car brand new because we have three kids and needed space for all their stuff when traveling. Although the transmission went out in the first nine months, it was replaced with a new one and we haven't had any problems since. Besides the usual upkeep, we've had very few repairs. The air conditioning system did need repair after five years, but overall, the ride is still smooth even with over 150,000 miles on it. It's amazing that even after ten years, our kids have grown and they all still fit comfortably in the van. We plan to keep it until it no longer wants to go!
-
We purchased our 4dr Sienna LE brand new in February 1998. It has been a reliable vehicle, with only a few minor issues. We did experience some trouble with the radio push button springs wearing out, which was a new problem for us. Additionally, the rear brakes made a thumping noise until we had a brake job at 60k miles. We had brought it in for service several times to try and solve the issue, but eventually gave up. However, after the brake job, the problem disappeared. The low tire air pressure light worked for about 1.5 years before coming on intermittently. Unfortunately, the cost to repair this issue is quite high. Despite these minor setbacks, the dealer has been fantastic about backing warranty items and taking care of things beyond the warranty. Thank you for your understanding.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with our Sienna that we purchased back in '98. Overall, it has been a great car for us! We did have a bit of a scare when our transmission broke while we were driving 80 mph on the turnpike, but thankfully Toyota covered the repair. We also had some trouble with our door handles over the 6 years of use, but nothing too major. All in all, we've been really happy with our Sienna!
-
You've made a great choice with your new vehicle! It's been very reliable and runs smoothly. The only downside is that the storage space in the very rear is a bit lacking. Overall, it's a great car!

I never thought I would be so impressed with a mini van! As a working musician and a father of three girls and two large labrador retrievers, I need a vehicle that can be reconfigured to fit all sorts of things - from rock and roll band gear to the kids' soccer, dance, and school gear, to family outings. The Sienna has very tactile and intuitive features, and it has never failed me or left me stranded. I have driven many other vehicles, but hands down, I would choose the Sienna. Additionally, Toyota is known for its high resale value, making it an even better investment. The Sienna earns the highest marks for reliability, performance, functionality, and resale value.

We have only had to do routine maintenance up until recently. However, during a major road trip, the transmission failed unexpectedly, even though we had just had the transmission fluid flushed. It was quite disappointing to experience such a catastrophic problem at under 90,000 miles. We hope that this is an isolated incident and not a result of poor care by the previous owner/leaser. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Hi there! I noticed that the back hatch door handle on the Slider is not working properly. It seems like I have to drive it from the outside, which is quite inconvenient. I have my belongings inside, but I can't get them out. Access to it seems pointless at this stage. Could you please help me with this issue?

I had two major engine failures, the last due to sludge. However, I must say that the company covered it both times. They are even replacing the engine for me. Although there were numerous other problems that I encountered such as the brakes, the door locks, and alignment, I have to give them credit for standing behind their product. That's more than a lot of companies would do. By the way, anyone interested in buying it? It has a new engine now!

Although I have been satisfied with the gas mileage (28 mpg!!!), the configuration of the car leaves much to be desired. The tumble seats are particularly unpleasant. Furthermore, the car has not held up well, with the leather cracking and the paint chipping. Despite these issues, the interior remains quite luxurious. However, the seats lack support. It is worth noting that first-year models often have some issues, but overall I remain confident in the car's quality.
