2016 Toyota Sienna problems
The Toyota Sienna is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Toyota primarily for the North American market. It is named for the Italian city of Siena, in the region of Tuscany. It replaced the first generation Previa van in 1997 with a more conventional front-wheel drive layout and shares a heavily revised platform with the Camry. Both the Previa and original Sienna were smaller than the other minivans they competed against, but a redesign in 2003 (for the 2004 model year) increased the dimensions to match those of its competitors.
It was redesigned again in 2010 (for the 2011 model year). The third generation Sienna went on sale in the United States in February 2010 and is the first Sienna to ever receive a "Top Safety Pick" award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. A 2020 redesign (for the 2021 model year) saw the Sienna becoming a hybrid vehicle for its fourth generation. While previous generations of the Sienna were exported to select Asian and European markets, the fourth generation is the first to be produced outside of the United States as Chinese production commenced in July 2021 by two Toyota joint ventures. In China, it is also marketed as the Toyota Granvia.
Following the discontinuation of General Motors's all-wheel drive minivans in 2006, the Sienna was the only minivan in its class offered with AWD in North America until the 2021 Chrysler Pacifica was introduced with an AWD option in 2020.
The Sienna is not available in Japan and Australia as it is not produced in a right-hand drive configuration, and the segment in these countries is already occupied by the Alphard/Vellfire and the HiAce/Granvia respectively.
As of the fourth generation, introduced in 2020, the Sienna is now built on Toyota's TNGA-K platform, which it shares with most of Toyota’s other large MPVs and crossovers.

Common 2016 Toyota Sienna problems
The Toyota Sienna is known for its reliability and durability, but like any vehicle, it can have some common problems. Here are some of the issues reported by owners of the 2016 Toyota Sienna:
- Paint Peeling: A few owners have reported issues with the paint peeling on their Siennas. This can be a cosmetic issue that may require repainting or touch-up work to fix.
- Sliding Door Alignment: Some Sienna owners have reported problems with the sliding doors not aligning properly. This issue can affect the ease of use and the overall functionality of the doors, and it may require adjustments or repairs to fix.
- Traction Control Turns Off: Some Sienna owners have reported that the traction control system turns off unexpectedly. This can be a safety issue, especially in wet or slippery conditions. If this problem occurs, it is recommended to have the vehicle checked by a Toyota dealership as soon as possible.
- Key Fob Issues: Some Sienna owners have reported issues with the key fobs, such as the vehicle not starting or the traction control turning off. This can be a frustrating issue, but it may be resolved by trying a different key fob or having the vehicle checked by a Toyota dealership.
It is important to note that these issues are not universal to all 2016 Toyota Siennas, and many owners have reported having no major problems with their vehicles. The Sienna is generally considered a reliable and durable minivan, and these common problems are generally considered minor compared to many other vehicles in its class.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-12
- VIN: 5TDDK3DC9GS
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: After 80,000 miles have a loud whirling sound coming from rear, after inspection and online investigation found many many others with same issue, the dust cover and or o-ring doesn’t properly protect the rear bearing in the coupler. So while the fix is to remove the rear differential coupler, and replace the bearing with an improved version, seems Toyota has stopped supporting this, and no longer offers the improved bearing as a replacement part, but only supports replacing the entire rear differential coupling at $2000 for the part plus labor. While many have replaced the bearing without issues despite toyota not allowing it as a fix. So first it should be a recall as this is an obvious defect effecting thousands, but then to gouge owners for thousands when the fix doesn’t require a complete replacement of the rear differential coupling assembly.

How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? While driving the vehicle at the rate of 55-60 mph, the vehicle came to a complete/instant stop without warning — potential causing harm or even death to the occupants of the associated vehicle, and it adversely affected my ability to safely control the vehicle. Also, as the incident was occurring, my drivers seatbelt became very, very tight. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? No. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? - Summary: I was driving my 2016 Sienna 30 mph, when suddenly, the rear driver's side window exploded. The police came and inspected the incident, the surroundings and the vehicle, and determined that there was no object or strike to cause the explosion. There were no warnings or lamps. There was no pressure change such as a window or door opening to cause the explosion. Should the glass have imploded, we would be having a very different conversation, as my two children were in the vehicle with me. The safety of my two children was at risk due to the glass exploding. We called our local Toyota dealer, and they claim to have no information on dealer notifications, recalls, or even heard of such a thing, perhaps to avoid having to pay for the repair. I have attached a photo of the damaged window.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-04-26
- VIN: 5TDDK3DC9GS
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: MY 2016 TOYOTA SIENNA THAT HAS 16,000 MILES WAS PARKED AT HOME AND I WENT TO GO START IT AND IT STALLED. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO HENDRICK TOYOTA OF APEX, NC AND THEY TOLD ME THAT RODENTS CHEWED THREW THE WIRING AND IT WAS NOT COVERED BY MY WARRANTY. I HAVE COMPLAINED TO BOTH THE DEALERSHIP AND TO TOYOTA. I HAVE HAD ANOTHER TOYOTA PARKED IN WITHIN THE SAME PROXIMITY FOR OVER 15 YEARS. I HAVE NEVER HAD RODENT ISSUES WITH IT. I AM CONCERNED FOR THE SAFETY OF MY FAMILY. IIF THERE ARE MICE LIVING INSIDE THE CAR, THEY COULD BE LEAVING RAT DROPPINGS THAT COULD BE HARMFUL TO BOTH OF THEM. I AM ANGRY AND CONCERNED AND DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY, WHEN OTHER VEHICLES PARKED IN THE SAME LOCATION AREN'T EXPERIENCING THE SAME PROBLEM. AFTER FURTHER RESEARCH I FOUND THAT AUTO MANUFACTURERS IN ORDER TO GO GREEN ARE USING SOY BASED PRODUCTS ON WIRES INSTEAD OF PETROLEUM. THEY ARE USING SUGAR IN THEIR PLASTICS. RICE HUSKS IN THEIR INTERIORS. ALL THIS STUFF ATTRACTS RODENTS. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE! MY DEALERSHIP SAID THEY ARE SEEING AT LEAST 2 RODENT DAMAGED VEHICLES A WEEK. TOYOTA NEEDS TO FIX THIS PROBLEM, CHANGE THE MATERIALS THEY USE, AND COVER IT UNDER WARRANTY. THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL CLASS ACTION LAWSUITS AGAINST TOYOTA FOR THIS ISSUE. HERE ARE TWO ARTICLES THAT DETAIL THE PROBLEM MYSELF AND OTHER TOYOTA OWNERS HAVE HAD - HTTP://CTWATCHDOG.COM/FINANCE/RODENTS-DAMAGE-CARS-BYCHEWING-ELECTRICAL-CONNECTIONS-TIPS-ON-HOW-TO-AVOID-COSTLYREPAIRS, HTTP://WWW.SYNLUBE.COM/INCREDIBLEEDIBLECAR1.HTM

I really love this car because it has so much room! When compared to the Suburban, which has 121.1 cubic feet total, our Sienna has 150.1 CUBIC FEET TOTAL! It's even bigger than a Suburban! You can look it up. The Sienna has lower floors, a high roof (great for tall people), and a wider body frame. The interior is also very nice, roomy, spacious, and luxurious. Even the mid-trim comes with Blind Spot Monitoring, Parking Alert (beeps when you're about to hit something while in reverse), a standard Nav. System, along with a backup camera, Bluetooth, Serious XM, and many other features and easter eggs! The interior is also very functional. For example, you can remove the middle seat in the 2nd row and stow it behind the third row in a little storage cubby, which is very useful if you just want captain's chairs in the 2nd row. There's still tons of space behind the 3rd row (39.1 cubic feet) along with 87 cubes behind the 2nd row. So, if you have a big family of 8 and need room for everyone's stuff with themselves, then you might consider the Sienna's super roomy interior with room for 6 footers in the third row!
-
This Toyota Sienna is exactly what I was looking for - it's comfortable, quiet, and spacious. While the mileage isn't as good as my Camrys, it's understandable given the size. This is my first time owning a minivan, but I'm excited to use it for hauling my grandkids around.
-
Lexus like drive you can sleep in! Remove the second row seats and a camper awaits!
-
You are very dependable.
-
The car is really well appointed and provides a super comfortable ride. The road noise isn't too bad and I absolutely love the hands-free phone features. I find that I can hear phone conversations better while driving than when I'm not in the van.

Please be advised that we had a negative experience with a Toyota Sienna and Tim's Toyota. We purchased a certified used Toyota Sienna from another dealer in 2007 in anticipation of our soon arriving triplets. While the van had lovely amenities like a DVD system and heated seats, it has been one hazard after another. Unfortunately, we experienced multiple issues with the air conditioning system and automatic side doors. Despite being just over the warranty limit, Tim's Toyota refused to offer any flexibility or middle ground. We had to pay for the repairs ourselves. We understand that these issues can be frustrating, but we wanted to share our experience with you. Thank you for taking the time to read this cautionary note. Two years later, the opposite door experienced similar difficulties. This week, the original door with problems broke. Unfortunately, the automated system caused a cable to snap, which hit the window and shattered it inside the vehicle. Thankfully, my children were not in the car at the time. If anyone had been seated in the middle or back, they would have been seriously injured by the shattered glass that splintered through the car. When we took the car to Tim's again, they informed us that this is a common problem with this vehicle. They suggested that instead of paying the $1250.00 cost to fix the automatic door with certainty that the issue will happen again, we should have the door operate manually for much less and reduce another malfunction of the same scale. When the door broke and the cable snapped, glass was splintered all through the interior of the van. In summary, this is an unacceptable situation. I would not recommend buying this vehicle. Although it is marketed and sold as a family and safe vehicle, these are not true statements. As a mother and consumer, I am disappointed with Toyota. The safety of my children has been jeopardized multiple times. I believe that our local dealership could have been more helpful in addressing issues that they describe as common to the vehicle. If you are looking for a safe and reliable vehicle for your family, I suggest considering other makes.

I recently purchased a Toyota Sienna minivan from Coggin Toyota at the Avenues in Jacksonville, FL. I noticed that the van came with Firestone tires, which unfortunately turned out to be defective. I experienced a blown tire while driving, and was disappointed to learn that the dealer would not cover the cost of repair. Despite this setback, I remain hopeful that the dealer will work with me to find a solution. I also purchased extended coverage from Mark Wootan, which I was told would cover a wide range of potential issues. Unfortunately, the tire blowout occurred well before I expected it to, and I was disappointed to learn that it was not covered by the warranty. I hope that the dealer will consider covering other related issues, such as TPMS, Blind spot indicator, and ABS, which are all part of the vehicle's electronics. Overall, I believe that Toyota is a reputable brand, and I hope that they will work with me to resolve this issue in a fair and reasonable manner.

I've noticed that my tires wear out quickly, even though I rotate them every 6 months. It seems like this is a common issue among other car owners, as I've seen on various blogs. I try to make them last for 24 months, but unfortunately, the front wheels just chew them up. Additionally, the A/C for the rear of the car only stays cool at 64 degrees and gets uncomfortably hot at 65 degrees and above. Lastly, my back gate got warped from a minor rear-end collision on the left side, which cost me $750 to repair and paint. Despite the dealership adjusting the mounts and hinges three times, the gate still catches on the emergency wire/sensor that runs up and down the sides. The dealership is now suggesting that I purchase a new gate for an estimated cost of $2,800 (including repair and gate).

The AWD model averages 21 mpg and unfortunately does not come with a spare tire, only run flat tires. Additionally, the engine is very underpowered and the cruise control is slow to respond. The audio system is poorly designed and requires manual switching from radio to Bluetooth. The touch screen can also be unresponsive. These issues are in comparison to a 2014 Ford Fusion. It's understandable to feel disappointed with the technology and engine responsiveness. Lastly, the A/C may not be as cold as expected.
