2014 Toyota Sienna problems

The Toyota Sienna is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Toyota primarily for the North American market. It is named for the Italian city of Siena, in the region of Tuscany. It replaced the first generation Previa van in 1997 with a more conventional front-wheel drive layout and shares a heavily revised platform with the Camry. Both the Previa and original Sienna were smaller than the other minivans they competed against, but a redesign in 2003 (for the 2004 model year) increased the dimensions to match those of its competitors.

It was redesigned again in 2010 (for the 2011 model year). The third generation Sienna went on sale in the United States in February 2010 and is the first Sienna to ever receive a "Top Safety Pick" award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. A 2020 redesign (for the 2021 model year) saw the Sienna becoming a hybrid vehicle for its fourth generation. While previous generations of the Sienna were exported to select Asian and European markets, the fourth generation is the first to be produced outside of the United States as Chinese production commenced in July 2021 by two Toyota joint ventures. In China, it is also marketed as the Toyota Granvia.

Following the discontinuation of General Motors's all-wheel drive minivans in 2006, the Sienna was the only minivan in its class offered with AWD in North America until the 2021 Chrysler Pacifica was introduced with an AWD option in 2020.

The Sienna is not available in Japan and Australia as it is not produced in a right-hand drive configuration, and the segment in these countries is already occupied by the Alphard/Vellfire and the HiAce/Granvia respectively.

As of the fourth generation, introduced in 2020, the Sienna is now built on Toyota's TNGA-K platform, which it shares with most of Toyota’s other large MPVs and crossovers.

Common 2014 Toyota Sienna problems

The Toyota Sienna 2014 has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. These problems primarily revolve around the in-car electronics, particularly the infotainment system, rear entertainment system, backup or other camera/sensors, and head-up display.

One of the most frequently reported issues is related to the CD player. After 7+ years of use, the CD player may start refusing to release the CD and would no longer play CDs. This can be a significant inconvenience for those who rely on CDs for their music needs.

Another common problem is related to the GPS map files. Some owners have reported that it is impossible to update GPS map files, which can lead to outdated maps and difficulty in navigating to new locations.

The electronic auto-dimming rearview mirror has also been reported to have issues. Some owners have reported that the mirror does not dim as designed to, which can be a problem when driving at night or in bright sunlight.

Additionally, some owners have reported issues with the rearview mirror's electronic auto-dim feature, stating that it does not dim as designed to. This can be a significant safety concern, as it can make it difficult to see when driving in bright sunlight or at night.

Finally, some owners have reported issues with the Bluetooth connectivity, stating that they cannot get it to work and have given up. This can be a significant inconvenience for those who rely on their phone for music, navigation, or other in-car functions.

It is worth noting that these issues are based on complaints from owners and may not be representative of all 2014 Toyota Sienna models. However, they do highlight some of the common problems that owners have reported with this vehicle.

  • Summary: The contact owns a 2014 Toyota Sienna. The contact stated that the passenger's side and driver's side sliding doors were locked and had failed to open automatically and manually. The contact stated that the motors of the doors were previously replaced; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where the doors could not be opened. The dealer determined that the Power Sliding Door Cable Sub-Assembly, the Sliding Door Center Hinge Assembly, the Fuel Filler Door Hinge and Pin, the Power Sliding Door Rear Lock Assembly, the Sliding Door Front Lock Assembly, and an unknown part had failed and needed to be replaced. The dealer related the failure to Toyota Campaign Number: ZK1. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle was no longer covered because the campaign had expired. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-19
  • VIN: 5TDZK3DC6ES
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The spare tire, which is normally secured under the minivan, fell off while driving at approximately 40 mph. My son, who was driving the vehicle, heard a sudden loud noise from the underside of the vehicle. He looked in his rearview mirror and saw something in the middle of the road. He pulled over to inspect the vehicle, and noticed that the spare tire was gone, which he was able to retrieve. I brought the vehicle to a local Toyota dealer, who indicated I needed a new spare tire carrier (at a cost of $329.07), since the original unit had failed due to rust. The spare tire had never been used or removed from its manufactured mounting position since original purchase of the vehicle in 2014. There were no warning signs at any time prior to the incident that the spare tire might come loose from its mounted position. The safety issues associated with this incident are obvious, e.g., another vehicle striking the spare tire or loosing control to avoid the spare tire; the tire rolling and striking a person, another vehicle, or damaging property, etc.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-07-17
  • VIN: 5TDKK3DCXES
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: I HAD THE VEHICLE INSPECTED BY PERSONAL MECHANIC BECAUSE THE STEERING WHEEL WOULD TIGHTEN AND THEN RELEASE WHENEVER TURNED TO RIGHT AND RELEASE ON LEFT TURN. THIS WOULD HAPPEN ON A REGULAR BASIS WHEN TURNING THE WHEEL. THE MECHANIC DID RECOMMEND THAT I CALLED THE MANUFACTURER TO CHECK IF THERE WAS ANY RECALL FOR THE PROBLEM. WHICH I DID. RESPOND WAS NO AND SO I EXPLAINED THE PROBLEM TO THE REPRESENTATIVE. THERE IS NOT A FAILURE OR INCIDENT EXCEPT THE STEERING WHEEL KEEPS ON TIGHTENING AND I'M JUST BEING CAUTIOUS. NO MANUFACTURER, POLICE, OR INSURANCE HAS INSPECTED IT BECAUSE THERE IS NO ACCIDENT. THANK GOD! JUST CONCERNED BECAUSE MY MECHANIC SAID IT IS SOMETHING FOR THE DEALERSHIP. SOMETHING TO DO POSSIBLY WITHIN THE STEERING COLUMN/CHANNEL COMPONENT. NOT SURE WHICH IS RIGHT, BUT TO CHECK FOR RECALL BY MANUFACTURER. I TOOK IT TO TIRE KINGDOM BUT SOMETHING ELSE WAS REPAIRED. SO I'M STILL HAVING TROUBLE WITH STEERING WHEEL STIFF TIGHTENING UP LIGHTLY. I WOULD FEEL IT TIGHTEN WHENEVER DRIVING 45 MILES OR MORE.

SEAT BELTS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-02-26
  • VIN: 5TDYK3DCXES
  • Components: SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: After a rain, water will leak into the driver and front passenger seatbelt coil housing. The front passenger seatbelt was not used in some time and mold developed with green and black stains all along the seatbelt. After it rained, the driver side seatbelt released about 1 cup of water when I pulled the seatbelt. With my wife as the passenger, she was conflicted about wearing the seatbelt while having mold pressed against her body, clothes, and breathing it in. The smell of mold is now present in the vehicle. This problem has been reproduced via online reports at SiennaChat.com. No warning lamps, messages or symptoms appeared prior, or during, this issue. I am in the process of reporting it to Toyota as soon as the next business day (Monday).

WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-12-04
  • VIN: 5TDYK3DC0ES
  • Components: WHEELS
  • Summary: Tire pressure monitor system dashboard icon is ridiculously non-intuitive. Both my wife and daughter have been baffled by it because the icon DOES NOT LOOK LIKE A TIRE! Neither are stupid, one is a college grad and the other is a junior at ASU. The icon is a cross-section of a tire, and none of them know what a tire cross-section looks like. Because of this, they have driven on dangerously under inflated tires without knowing it. Fix the icon SO IT LOOKS LIKE A TIRE! Thank you.

SUSPENSION,WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-10-16
  • VIN: 5TDKK3DC9ES
  • Components: SUSPENSION,WHEELS
  • Summary: The van seems to prematurely wear tires out before their service life expectancy. I've owned the van for seven years, and I've had to purchase over five complete sets of tires. The front tires wear-out much faster than the rear tires, and do not last more than 15K miles. I've had several alignment jobs done, both (L&R) control arms replaced, ball joints, and struts - the van still wears out tires regardless of tire brand. I suspect the must be a design flaw causing premature wear and tear on tires on the front of the van, as I just replaced another set of tires from the Yokohama brand recommended for the van. I've asked Toyota, and they claim ignorance of such a problem. It is my desire to make this problem known, and to have the Government investigate if there is an design flaw in the Sienna van which is causing rapid part failures.

We have been trying to correct this issue through Toyota and the NHTSA for well over a year but no progress has been made. I have paperwork that shows the recall work was carried out. Please help me figure out how to get this updated. My family has received orders to return to the US but we are unable to ship our vehicle with an open NHTSA recall.

POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-10-15
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 5TDYK3DC5ES
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: ON OCTOBER 15TH AT APPROXIMATELY 3:30 PM (CT) MY 2014 TOYOTA SIENNA WAS PARKED IN MY DRIVEWAY WITH THE ENGINE ON, UNATTENDED, WHEN IT MOVED FORWARD UP THE SLIGHT INCLINE OF MY DRIVEWAY, STRUCK ANOTHER VEHICLE THAT WAS PARKED IN THE GARAGE AND KEPT MOVING FORWARD UNTIL IT STRUCK THE FRONT WALL OF THE GARAGE. PRIOR TO THE ACCIDENT, I HAD REVERSED THE VAN OUT OF THE GARAGE AND LEFT THE VAN IGNITION ON AND IN PARK AS I EXITED. I KNOW FOR CERTAIN THAT THE VAN WAS IN THE PARK POSITION SINCE THE AUTOMATIC LOCKS LET ME EXIT THE VEHICLE WITHOUT HAVING TO MANUALLY UNLOCK THEM AND THE ALARMS DID NOT SOUND AS I EXITED. THE VAN ALSO DID NOT ROLL FORWARD IR BACKWARD AS I EXITED. I THEN WALKED IN FRONT OF THE VAN TO ENTER MY HOUSE THROUGH THE GARAGE. I WAS IN THE HOUSE FOR LESS THAN 5 MINUTES WHEN I HEARD THE LOUD CRASH OF THE VAN STRIKING THE GARAGE WALL. MY TOYOTA SIENNA WAS MANUFACTURED ON JUNE 6, 2014. AFTER THE ACCIDENT I DISCOVERED THERE IS AN ACTIVE RECALL (RECALL: TRANSMISSION SHIFT CABLE/ROLLAWAY/FMVSS 102) FOR AN ISSUE THAT CAUSES ROLLAWAYS EFFECTING CARS MANUFACTURED BETWEEN JUNE 17, 2014 THROUGH JUNE 24, 2014. I TOOK MY VAN TO TOYOTA EXPECTING MY ISSUE TO BE RELATED TO THIS RECALL. TOYOTA HAD THE BLACK BOX INSPECTED AND THE TRANSMISSION INSPECTED AND DETERMINED THEY WERE NOT LIABLE SINCE THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO REPLICATE THE ISSUE AND DID NOT FIND ANY DEFECTS. WHEN I TOOK MY CAR IN ORIGINALLY THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THERE WAS NOT A GOOD WAY TO DETERMINE IF THE SHIFT CABLE WAS DEFECTIVE AND THEY WERE SIMPLY REPLACING THE PART AS PART OF THE RECALL, WHICH MY CAR DID NOT QUALIFY FOR SINCE IT WAS MANUFACTURED 11 DAYS PRIOR. A CAR SHOULD NEVER MOVE ITSELF FROM THE PARK POSITION AND SOMETHING HAS TO BE FAULTY WITH THE CAR IN ORDER FOR IT TO DO SO.

THIS HAS OCCURRED ONCE WHEN COMING UP TO A STOP SIGN, AND TWICE WHILE PULLING INTO A PARKING SPACE. BOTH TIMES WHEN PULLING INTO THE PARKING SPACE, I WAS BARELY ABLE TO STOP IN TIME, ALMOST HITTING A CAR IN THE SPACE IN FRONT OF ME. AFTER THE LAST TIME THIS OCCURRED (7/3/2020), THE CAR WAS TAKEN TO ST. CHARLES TOYOTA ON 7/6, WHERE THEY FOUND NOTHING WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE. THIS STARTED JUST THIS YEAR; THE VEHICLE HAS APPROX. 70,000 MILES ON IT. WE HAVE OWNED THE VEHICLE SINCE NEW - IT DID NOT DO THIS FOR THE FIRST 4.5 YEARS OF SERVICE.

Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's numbers for this recall are "Zone A" Toyota: G0P, Lexus: GLG; "Zone B" Toyota: G0R, Lexus GLH; "Zone C" Toyota: H0A, and Lexus: HLA.

  • Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
  • Components: STRUCTURE:BODY:DOOR
  • Summary: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2011-2016 Toyota Sienna minivans manufactured January 4, 2010, to August 12, 2016. If the power sliding door is unable to be opened when commanded, such as if the door is frozen shut, the door may subsequently open unexpectedly, possibly while the vehicle is moving.
  • Consequence: If door opens while the vehicle is moving, there would be an increased risk of injury to the vehicle occupants.
  • Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the junction block, rear sliding door wire harnesses, and install two sub wire harnesses, free of charge. The recall began on July 28, 2017. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's number for this recall is G04.

  • Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:HOSES, LINES/PIPING, AND FITTINGS
  • Summary: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2014 Toyota Avalon, Camry, Sienna, and Highlander and model year 2015 Lexus RX350 vehicles. Fuel may leak from the one of the fuel delivery pipes in the engine compartment.
  • Consequence: A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire.
  • Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace any of the suspect fuel delivery pipes free of charge. The recall began November 17, 2014. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331.

  • Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
  • Components: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:GEAR POSITION INDICATION (PRNDL)
  • Summary: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2014 Sienna vehicles manufactured June 17, 2014, through June 24, 2014. The affected vehicles have a transmission shift control cable whose protective cable sleeve may have been damaged during assembly. This could cause the control cable to bind or separate during gear shift operation causing incorrect gear selection. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 102, "Transmission Shift Lever Sequence, Starter Interlock, and Transmission Braking Effect."
  • Consequence: If the transmission shift cable separates while the vehicle is being driven, the transmission gear selection may not match the indicated gear and the vehicle may move in an unintended or unexpected direction, increasing the risk of a crash. Furthermore, when the driver goes to stop and park the vehicle, despite selecting the 'PARK' position, the transmission may not be in 'PARK.' If the vehicle is not in the 'PARK' position there is a risk the vehicle will roll away as the driver and other occupants exit the vehicle or anytime thereafter. A vehicle rollaway increases the risk of injury to exiting occupants and bystanders.
  • Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the transmission shift control cable, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began in early August 2014. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331.

Hey there! I wanted to share my recent experience at the Toyota dealer. I had an appointment to repair the rear brakes that freeze every time the van is washed in winter. The service advisor told me not to wash the van when the temperature is below 32 degrees. I was a bit surprised because I've owned several other mini vans and cars and have never been told not to wash my vehicle. Unfortunately, this experience has left me feeling disappointed and we have decided not to purchase another Sienna again. Just to give you some context, our Sienna is a 2014 XLE that we purchased new.

The VSC light has been causing the cruise control to stop working, and the dealer has quoted a $2,000 fix. Unfortunately, the headlights have also gone bad, with each one costing $100, except for one that will cost $1,300. According to the dealer, there is a computer for each headlight, which seems like poor engineering. I had a 2001 Sienna and loved it, but unfortunately, this '04 model has not lived up to my expectations. I would advise against purchasing these cars.

Although I have experienced some issues with my 2014 van, I am confident that they can be resolved. The shaking of the van when going downhill with slight braking can be fixed with proper maintenance. The power window motor has been replaced and the stereo controls on the steering wheel can be repaired. The weak reception of the stereo can be improved with an upgrade. The paint on the bumpers can be protected with proper care and maintenance. The climate controls can be serviced to eliminate any strange smells or humidity. The battery has been replaced and the steering wheel can be restored. Overall, I am confident that with the right attention and care, my van will be in top condition again.

I ordered my Limited with every option and accessory on it, but unfortunately, it took over 4 months for it to arrive due to Toyota's way of building a vehicle. I have noticed that the road noise is quite loud, which can be a bit frustrating. Additionally, I have noticed that the suspension seems to struggle when there is any load put behind the third row. Despite these issues, I am still getting 23 mpg under any condition, which is not bad. However, I have heard that a friend's Honda Odyssey was giving over 28 mpg in the same situation. When you are paying almost $50,000 for a vehicle, you expect to have a smooth and quiet ride with all the features you need. Unfortunately, the Sienna falls short in some areas. For example, a 4-way power front passenger seat seems a bit outdated, and the remote start that turns the car off when you unlock or open the door is not very convenient. I am now considering other options, such as the Chrysler Pacifica or an Explorer. These vehicles offer great features like massaging seats or blu-ray rear entertainment among other things, and they also offer better interior quality materials for less money. **Update #2** I ended up buying a Chrysler Pacifica Limited, and I am loving every minute of it. I opted for the Hybrid one due to most of our travel being local lately. The road noise is at a minimum, and the features are insane. The build quality, fit, and finish are top-notch, and the plastics and leather are of much better quality. I was also able to take advantage of the incentives, and a 2020 Pacifica was cheaper than a 2020 Sienna.

Although the Sienna XLE+Navi option has cheap plastics, fabrics, and finishes in the cabin, it still has some great features. However, compared to the previous Sienna model with the same trim option, it has less leather surface than older models to save its cost. You may find other cost-saving efforts from Toyota, unless you are paying $40,000+ for the limited edition. Please check its keyless remote, interior finishes, and XLE's leather finishes/quality, as they are lower than the average car. If you are also considering the Odyssey Ex-L+Nav, I agree on the smooth ride and handling, but overall, I regret my decision. If I were to buy again, I would go for the Kia Sedona or Honda Pilot. UPDATE: It has been a great family car for trips, and the engine and transmission are healthy like a new one. The MPG has been an average of 17mpg so far at 68,000 miles. There was one issue raised after 44,000 miles, where vibration started at the brake and was worst from 50mph to 35 mph. I tried everything I could, including changing 50% of the remaining brake pad with new ones at first, wheel alignment, and replacing the rotor at last, but the mechanic couldn't fix the issue.

I'm so happy with my first minivan! As a family, we prioritize practicality, and when my 4-year-old nephew had trouble climbing into our Traverse, I knew it was time to consider a minivan. Previously, we owned a 2010 Venza, which we traded in after 75,000 miles. Although there was a slight manufacturing defect with the 4-cylinder engine, it was repaired under warranty, and the car ran smoothly for the entire time we owned it. This experience convinced me of Toyota's superior long-term build quality compared to our Traverse.

I'm so glad to hear that you've been enjoying your van! It sounds like it has plenty of space and power to handle whatever you need it for, even in snowy conditions.

Hi there! Just wanted to let you know that we've recently installed new top of the line Bridgestone tires, replaced the wiper blades, and had an oil change. Your vehicle is in great shape!

Your Toyota has outperformed your last car, which was a Honda minivan, by two to one.
