2009 Toyota Sienna problems
The Toyota Sienna is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Toyota primarily for the North American market. It is named for the Italian city of Siena, in the region of Tuscany. It replaced the first generation Previa van in 1997 with a more conventional front-wheel drive layout and shares a heavily revised platform with the Camry. Both the Previa and original Sienna were smaller than the other minivans they competed against, but a redesign in 2003 (for the 2004 model year) increased the dimensions to match those of its competitors.
It was redesigned again in 2010 (for the 2011 model year). The third generation Sienna went on sale in the United States in February 2010 and is the first Sienna to ever receive a "Top Safety Pick" award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. A 2020 redesign (for the 2021 model year) saw the Sienna becoming a hybrid vehicle for its fourth generation. While previous generations of the Sienna were exported to select Asian and European markets, the fourth generation is the first to be produced outside of the United States as Chinese production commenced in July 2021 by two Toyota joint ventures. In China, it is also marketed as the Toyota Granvia.
Following the discontinuation of General Motors's all-wheel drive minivans in 2006, the Sienna was the only minivan in its class offered with AWD in North America until the 2021 Chrysler Pacifica was introduced with an AWD option in 2020.
The Sienna is not available in Japan and Australia as it is not produced in a right-hand drive configuration, and the segment in these countries is already occupied by the Alphard/Vellfire and the HiAce/Granvia respectively.
As of the fourth generation, introduced in 2020, the Sienna is now built on Toyota's TNGA-K platform, which it shares with most of Toyota’s other large MPVs and crossovers.

Common 2009 Toyota Sienna problems
The Toyota Sienna 2009 is known for several common problems that have been reported by its owners. These issues include loss of engine power, cracking dashboard, transmission failure, and power door issues.
Loss of engine power is a significant concern for the 2009 Sienna, with many owners reporting that their vehicle loses power when they slow down. This issue is often accompanied by transmission problems, such as jerking and slipping, but the source of this problem remains undetermined.
Another common issue with the 2009 Sienna is a cracking dashboard. This problem is unsightly and can cost thousands of dollars to fix, as it often requires replacing the entire dashboard.
Transmission failure is also a prevalent issue in the 2009 Sienna. The vehicle's RPM may increase, but it fails to pick up speed, indicating a problem with the transmission system. The potential fix for this issue is to replace the transmission system, which may cost over $3,000.
Power door issues are another concern for the 2009 Sienna. The power door may stop working, which is a considerable safety risk. This issue may be due to damage to the door's cable, which may need to be replaced.
In addition to these common problems, the 2009 Sienna has also been reported to have issues with the water pump, starter, and radiator. One owner reported a lot of smoke and rattling noises from the front of the vehicle, which led to the diagnosis of a failing starter and radiator. The total bill for these repairs was $2200, but the owner was cautioned that there could be engine damage due to high temperatures and that a new engine might be needed.
The 2009 Sienna's climate system has also been reported to have issues. Some owners have reported problems with the air conditioning system, including electrical failure, refrigerant leakage, and the need for yearly recharges.
In conclusion, the Toyota Sienna 2009 has several common problems that potential buyers should be aware of, including loss of engine power, cracking dashboard, transmission failure, power door issues, and problems with the water pump, starter, radiator, and climate system. While the Sienna is known for its solid reliability scores, these common issues can be costly and may require significant repairs.

STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-10-06
- VIN: 5TDBK22C89S
- Components: STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The driver's side sliding door was stuck and I was struggling with it. Suddenly, the quarter panel window shattered (the window between the door and the back of the car) and the door came halfway off the track. It's important to note that this was not the window of the door I was struggling with and nothing visible hit the window. Luckily, my baby was not yet in his seat which is right next to the window. It is normal for people to struggle with a stuck door. If a non-visibly connected window suddenly shatters it is a significant safety risk.

- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE
- Summary: TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: REGARDING CUSTOMER SUPPORT PROGRAM (ZTS): WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT FOR REAR SLIDING DOOR LATCH ASSEMBLIES ON CERTAIN 2004-2010MY SIENNA VEHICLES AND POWER SLIDING DOOR CABLE ASSEMBLY ON CERTAIN 2004-2007MY SIENNA VEHICLES. I AM HERE TO TELL YOU THAT MY 2009 SIENNA SHOULD HAVE BEEN COVERED BY THIS WARRANTY EXTENSION. A FEW YEARS AGO OUR CABLE SNAPPED ON THE DRIVER SIDE DOOR. I WAS TOLD BY MY DEALER AND TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE THAT MY MODEL YEAR WAS NOT COVERED BY THE ABLE ASSEMBLY ISSUE. I WAS QUOTED APPROXIMATELY $2K FOR THIS REPAIR. WELL, WITH THE CRAZINESS OF THE PANDEMIC, I DECIDED TO DO THIS REPAIR MYSELF. I PURCHASED THE ATTACHED PARTS LIST IN THE SCAN MYSELF. AS YOU CAN SEE FROM THE IMAGES: THERE ARE SCREWS MISSING AROUND THE PULLEY SYSTEM, THE CABLE CRACKED THE HOUSING AND PROCEEDED TO TEAR UP THE SOUND INSULATION. THANKFULLY THE CABLE DID NOT HARM ANY OTHER KEY AREAS OF THE DOOR. THIS BLATANT DISREGARD FOR THE 2009 MODEL YEAR IS EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTING. I AM SURE THERE ARE OTHER OWNERS WITH THE SAME ISSUE.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-12-17
- VIN: 5TDBK22CX9S
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: BOTH SIDES POWER SLIDING DOORS HAD A CABLE BROKEN THAT ACTIVATES AUTOMATIC DOOR FUNCTION, IT ALSO OBSTRUCTS MANUALLY OPENING DOORS CREATING AN EGRESS HAZARD. VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-04-01
- VIN: 5TDBK22C79S
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: THE DASHBOARD ON THIS VEHICLE IS ESSENTIALLY MELTING AND TURNING INTO A STICKY, TACKY GLUE WHICH CREATES A BLINDING GLARE ON THE WINDSHIELD FOR THE DRIVER WHILE DRIVING. TOYOTA DID HAVE AN EXTENDED WARRANTY FOR THIS THAT THEY PUT INTO EFFECT AFTER THE PROBLEM BECAME PUBLIC BUT THEY PUT A TIME LIMIT ON IT AND MY VEHICLE STARTED HAVING THE ISSUE JUST OUTSIDE OF THE WARRANTY PERIOD. IN FACT I HAD THE VEHICLE EVALUATED IN 2017 DURING THE EXTENDED WARRANTY PERIOD AND WAS TOLD IT DID NOT QUALIFY BECAUSE I APPARENTLY WAS TAKING CARE OF MY VEHICLE TOO WELL. NOW TOYOTA IS SAYING I'LL HAVE TO REPLACE THE DASHBOARD MYSELF. IT IS REALLY HARD TO DRIVE ON BRIGHT DAYS BECAUSE THE GLARE IS AWFUL.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-01-10
- VIN: 5TDZK23CX9S
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: 2009 TOYOTA SIENNA WITH 134K MILEAGE HAS SRS WARNING LIGHT ON ALL OF A SUDDEN AND STAYS ON. TOYOTA DEALER WOULD CHARGE ME FOR DIAGNOSING AND CHARGE ME IF ANY FURTHER JOBS NEED TO BE DONE. SHOULDN'T THIS BE RECALLED AND HANDLED WITHOUT ANY CHARGE TO OWNERS AS IT'S MATTER OF SAFETY ISSUE?
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-06-22
- VIN: 5TDZK23C59S
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: OIL COOLER LINE FAILURE: WHILE DRIVING ON A STATE ROUTE IN A RURAL AREA MY OIL COOLER LINE RUPTURED IN MY 2009 TOYOTA SIENNA, RESULTING IN MAJOR LOSS OF ENGINE OIL, THUS BEING STRANDED IN A RURAL AREA AND REQUIRING A TOW. THE METAL OIL LINE WAS CONSTRUCTED WITH A SECTION OF RUBBER IN THE MIDDLE WHICH DETERIORATES AND FAILS. TOYOTA HAS BEEN AWARE OF THIS ISSUE FOR YEARS, AND FIRST CHANGED THE RUBBER COMPOSITION IN A REPLACEMENT PART BUT THIS PART STILL HAD A SIGNIFICANT FAILURE RATE. SO THE CURRENT REPLACEMENT IS ALL METAL LINE. WHY WOULD YOU HAVE A RUBBER SECTION IN AN OIL LINE? OBVIOUSLY THE FIRST TWO DESIGNED PARTS WERE A VERY POOR DESIGN. TOYOTA ISSUED AN EXTENDED WARRANTY FOR SIENNAS FOR 10 YEARS AND 150,000 MILES BUT THIS HAS SINCE EXPIRED. I WAS NEVER NOTIFIED OF THE EXTENDED WARRANTY. WHY EXPIRE A WARRANTY IF THE VEHICLE IS STILL WITHIN THE PARAMETERS OF THE WARRANTY (10 YEARS OR 150,000 MILES)? TOYOTA SAYS THIS IS NOT A SAFETY ISSUE. BUT AS A RETIRED CORPORATE SAFETY MANAGER/ENGINEER WITH A MAJOR TIRE MANUFACTURER I DISAGREE. THERE ARE POTENTIAL FIRE ISSUES FROM OIL BEING SPRAYED ON A HOT ENGINE/EXHAUST, A ROADSIDE ACCIDENT POTENTIAL ESPECIALLY IF YOU SUDDENLY LOST OIL WHERE YOU COULDN'T PULL OFF AND THE MOTOR SEIZED, AND A SECURITY ISSUE DEPENDING ON WHEN AND WHERE YOU BREAK DOWN. WHAT IF YOU HAD LITTLE KIDS AND BROKE DOWN IN A RURAL AREA (NO HEAT). I WILL END UP PAYING $94 FOR A TOW, $500 TO FIX, AND 4-7 DAYS CAR RENTAL TO FIX. BUT MY BIGGEST CONCERN IS THE SAFETY ISSUE.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-06-11
- VIN: 5TDZK22C19S
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: THE REAR PASSENGER DOOR RECENTLY BEGAN TO OPEN ON ITS OWN RANDOMLY WHEN DRIVING, SOMETHING MAY BE WRONG WITH THE LATCH, IT IS NOT HOOKING/ENGAGING TO THE CAR FRAME. MY WIFE MADE A LEFT TURN YESTERDAY AND THE PASSENGER REAR DOOR SLID OPEN, LUCKILY MY 7 YEAR OLD SON WAS BUCKLED IN. ALSO, THE CABLES TO THE DRIVER SIDE REAR SLIDING DOORS POPPED OFF ABOUT A YEAR AGO, BELIEVE IT WAS DUE TO RUST/CORROSION...

- VIN: 5TDZK22C49S
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: ON MARCH 19, 2019 THE SUNROOF AND SUNROOF COVER FLEW OFF MY VEHICLE AS I WAS DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY. MY LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP HAD NO IDEA WHY THIS WOULD HAPPEN. I FOUND OUT AFTER SPEAKING TO MY CAR INSURANCE COMPANY THAT THERE IS A RECALL FROM WEBASTO, THE MANUFACTURER OF THE SUNROOF. THE VEHICLE MANUFACTURERS SHOULD BE 100% AWARE OF THIS AND SENDING OUT NOTICES TO OWNERS. THIS COULD HAVE KILLED SOMEONE AND WEBASTO IS FORCING CUSTOMERS TO USE A REPAIR FACILITY THEY CHOOSE. TOYOTA SHOULD BE ISSUING RECALL NOTICES AND REPAIRING THESE VEHICLES ASAP BEFORE SOMEONE IS KILLED.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-02-12
- VIN: 5TDZK23C99S
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: THE AIRBAG LIKE CAME ON AND HAS NOT GONE OFF. HAD MECHANIC CHECK IT AND WAS TOLD THAT THE SQUIB CIRCUIT HAD A SHORT AND THAT IF IN AN ACCIDENT AIRBAGS WILL NOT DEPLOY. DEALER SAID IT COULD COST UP TO $2600 TO FIX. AFTER SOME RESEARCH, I HAVE FOUND THAT THERE ARE A LOT OF OTHER SIENNA OWNERS WITH THIS SAME PROBLEM. WHY HAS TOYOTA NOT RECALLED THIS, BECAUSE IT SOUNDS LIKE A MANUFACTURING ISSUE AND CONSUMER SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY THAT KIND OF MONEY FOR THERE FAULTY PRODUCT. NOW BECAUSE OF THIS FAULTY EQUIPMENT I HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO DRIVE AN UNSAFE VEHICLE BECAUSE I CAN NOT AFFORD THAT KIND OF MONEY TO REPAIR.
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-11-03

THE INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS DO NOT MATCH THE HARDWARE PROVIDED, CREATING THE POSSIBILITY OF INJURY OR VEHICLE DAMAGE DUE TO INCORRECT INSTALLATION. SPECIFICALLY, THE INSTRUCTIONS CALL FOR USE OF 2 "MOUNTING BARS", USED TO AVOID DRILLING HOLES IN THE VEHICLE. ONLY 1 MOUNTING BAR WAS SUPPLIED, ALONG WITH OTHER HARDWARE TO APPARENTLY BE USED IN PLACE OF THE SECOND BAR. THIS IS POSSIBLY REQUIRED DUE TO THE 3RD ROW SEATING MOUNTS OF THE SIENNA. THERE ARE NO INSTRUCTIONS FOR MOUNTING THE ALTERNATE HARDWARE, NOR HAVE I BEEN ABLE TO FIND ANY ON THE HARMAR AND SPINLIFE WEBSITES. ATTEMPTS TO CONTACT BOTH COMPANIES HAVE SO FAR BEEN FRUITLESS.

This is the best vehicle that I have ever had. It's so comfortable and enjoyable to drive. There's plenty of room to carry things, which would have been so useful when my kids were in college and had many pairs of shoes to haul. While it gets good mileage on the highway, it's not as efficient in town. However, I once drove a PT Cruiser for a few days and only got 2 MPG better mileage.

Congratulations on your new 2009 Toyota Sienna! It sounds like you're already enjoying it with 200 miles on the clock. The ride is comfortable and the seats are spacious, making it a great choice for long journeys. The 3.5L V6 engine is impressive for a van of this size, and you're still getting great mileage even though the engine isn't fully broken in yet. The DVD player and JBL sound system are fantastic features that add to the overall experience. With the Toyota Star Safety System, which includes VSC, Traction control, ABS, Brake assist, and 7 airbags, you can feel confident and secure on the road. If you're in the market for a minivan, the Sienna is definitely worth considering. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

We absolutely love our van! Although I initially had some reservations about owning a van, I can confidently say that I would never go back. This car is incredibly practical, especially for families like ours with kids. The room and comfort are simply amazing, and the smooth driving experience is an added bonus. One of the best features of this van is the automatic doors, which have been a lifesaver when it comes to preventing the kids from accidentally hitting other cars. Plus, you can easily close/open the doors from inside the van. It's clear that Toyota put a lot of thought into designing this car with so many family-friendly features. We couldn't be happier with our purchase!

I compared the Honda Odyssey and the Chrysler T&C to the Sienna, and in my opinion, the Sienna is the clear winner. The Sienna LE offers more features for the money, and I found the ride quality to be comparable to a Lexus. With a 266HP V6 engine, the Sienna has plenty of power to move this van. Additionally, I was impressed with its fuel efficiency, achieving 21 mpg city/26 highway.

Just passed six months of ownership. Van drives great-- smooth acceleration, supple ride, excellent turning radius and decent sight lines. However, I found the driver's seat to be less comfortable/adjustable than I expected. On the bright side, the interior is engineered well with lots of storage and an intuitive HVAC system. Although I opted for the JBL Synthesis system, I was disappointed with the sound quality. It did not meet my expectations compared to other premium set-ups I've had. Overall, I am still very happy with the van so far.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2009 Sienna XLE that I purchased in October. While driving in the first dusting of snow, I noticed that the antilock brakes do work, which was reassuring. However, I did have some trouble with my windows being frozen shut due to the cold weather. It's currently 20 degrees here, and it's only going to get colder, so I decided to take my 13-year-old Ford Windstar instead. Surprisingly, I didn't have any issues with sliding or frozen windows, even though it was also sitting outside. I think it might be time to replace the all-season tires that came with the Sienna for winter tires. I also realized that I should have asked if the car was winterized before purchasing it. The dealers mentioned that special orders are not possible, which is a shame considering the price of the car. Thanks for listening to my experience!

Hi there! I recently bought a new van for my family to avoid the discomfort of an old car, especially during the hot summer days in So Cal where temperatures can go over 100 degrees. Unfortunately, we've had some trouble with the A/C. It has stopped blowing cold air on five separate occasions, which is quite frustrating. We've taken it to the dealer, but they haven't been able to find anything wrong with it. I had previously purchased a Camry with no issues, so I was surprised by this experience. I'm considering a Honda for our next family van. Thank you for listening!
