1997 Toyota Sienna problems
The Toyota Sienna is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Toyota primarily for the North American market. It is named for the Italian city of Siena, in the region of Tuscany. It replaced the first generation Previa van in 1997 with a more conventional front-wheel drive layout and shares a heavily revised platform with the Camry. Both the Previa and original Sienna were smaller than the other minivans they competed against, but a redesign in 2003 (for the 2004 model year) increased the dimensions to match those of its competitors.
It was redesigned again in 2010 (for the 2011 model year). The third generation Sienna went on sale in the United States in February 2010 and is the first Sienna to ever receive a "Top Safety Pick" award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. A 2020 redesign (for the 2021 model year) saw the Sienna becoming a hybrid vehicle for its fourth generation. While previous generations of the Sienna were exported to select Asian and European markets, the fourth generation is the first to be produced outside of the United States as Chinese production commenced in July 2021 by two Toyota joint ventures. In China, it is also marketed as the Toyota Granvia.
Following the discontinuation of General Motors's all-wheel drive minivans in 2006, the Sienna was the only minivan in its class offered with AWD in North America until the 2021 Chrysler Pacifica was introduced with an AWD option in 2020.
The Sienna is not available in Japan and Australia as it is not produced in a right-hand drive configuration, and the segment in these countries is already occupied by the Alphard/Vellfire and the HiAce/Granvia respectively.
As of the fourth generation, introduced in 2020, the Sienna is now built on Toyota's TNGA-K platform, which it shares with most of Toyota’s other large MPVs and crossovers.

Common 1997 Toyota Sienna problems
The Toyota Sienna, produced from 1998 onwards, has been a reliable vehicle for many owners. However, there are some common problems that have been reported by owners of the 1997 model, which was part of the first generation of the Sienna (1998-2003).
One of the most common problems with the 1997 Toyota Sienna is related to the crankcase ventilation system. The six-cylinder engine in 1998-2002 Toyota Sienna minivans can have problems with oil sludge, which happens because the crankcase ventilation system isn’t designed to accommodate the amount of heat and gases the engine produces. As a result, the trapped heat can cause the oil to turn to sludge, which can damage the engine. In 2007, Toyota agreed to cover the costs to repair 1998-2002 Sienna engines damaged from oil sludge and reimbursed affected Sienna owners who had already paid for engine repairs.
Another common problem with the 1997 Toyota Sienna is related to the plastic door handles. The plastic door handles on this van are prone to falling or breaking off, which can be a significant inconvenience for owners. Most owners simply replace a broken one with a new handle.
Additionally, the sliding door latch assembly can cause problems in the 1997 Toyota Sienna. Sometimes the latch locks up and makes it difficult for anyone to open the door from inside the van. Sometimes the latch holding the sliding door in an open position fails, and the sliding door closes on its own, creating a safety hazard for anything in the door's path.
In 2013, Toyota recalled over 600,000 affected Siennas due to spare tire carrier cable corrosion. The spare tire carrier cable, located underneath the minivan, can corrode excessively due to road salt in cold areas, causing the spare tire to fall off. In 2014, Toyota replaced the spare tire carrier assembly with a redesigned one in about 370,000 affected Sienna minivans.
It is important to note that the 1997 Toyota Sienna is part of the first generation of the Sienna, which ranks 47th in reliability out of 81 generations. There are 115 complaints mostly about engine problems, including oil sludge, with the 1998-2003 Sienna models.
In conclusion, while the 1997 Toyota Sienna has been a reliable vehicle for many owners, it is important to be aware of common problems such as oil sludge, broken door handles, and issues with the sliding door latch assembly. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent these issues and ensure the longevity of the vehicle.
