2022 Toyota Sienna problems

toyota logo

The Toyota Sienna is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Toyota primarily for the North American market. It is named for the Italian city of Siena, in the region of Tuscany. It replaced the first generation Previa van in 1997 with a more conventional front-wheel drive layout and shares a heavily revised platform with the Camry. Both the Previa and original Sienna were smaller than the other minivans they competed against, but a redesign in 2003 (for the 2004 model year) increased the dimensions to match those of its competitors.

It was redesigned again in 2010 (for the 2011 model year). The third generation Sienna went on sale in the United States in February 2010 and is the first Sienna to ever receive a "Top Safety Pick" award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. A 2020 redesign (for the 2021 model year) saw the Sienna becoming a hybrid vehicle for its fourth generation. While previous generations of the Sienna were exported to select Asian and European markets, the fourth generation is the first to be produced outside of the United States as Chinese production commenced in July 2021 by two Toyota joint ventures. In China, it is also marketed as the Toyota Granvia.

Following the discontinuation of General Motors's all-wheel drive minivans in 2006, the Sienna was the only minivan in its class offered with AWD in North America until the 2021 Chrysler Pacifica was introduced with an AWD option in 2020.

The Sienna is not available in Japan and Australia as it is not produced in a right-hand drive configuration, and the segment in these countries is already occupied by the Alphard/Vellfire and the HiAce/Granvia respectively.

As of the fourth generation, introduced in 2020, the Sienna is now built on Toyota's TNGA-K platform, which it shares with most of Toyota’s other large MPVs and crossovers.

Common 2022 Toyota Sienna problems

The 2022 Toyota Sienna has been reported to have several common problems by its owners. Here are the most frequently mentioned issues:

  • Fuel Gauge Malfunctions: Some Sienna owners have reported issues with the fuel gauge, which can display incorrect readings or fluctuate unpredictably. This can lead to confusion and uncertainty about the vehicle's fuel level, potentially causing owners to run out of gas unexpectedly. In some cases, a reset of the system by a Toyota dealership has resolved the issue, but it remains a concern for some owners.
  • 12-Volt Battery Dying: The 12-volt battery in the 2022 Toyota Sienna has been reported to die frequently, especially in cold climates. This is due to the battery's sensitivity to cold weather and its smaller size, which is not suitable for the Sienna's many electronics. Some owners have reported having to replace the battery multiple times, while others have found success by upgrading to a larger battery or carrying a portable booster pack.
  • Tow Bar Interference with Rear Kick Sensor: Some Sienna owners with a tow bar installed have reported interference with the rear kick sensor, which can cause issues with the vehicle's sensors and potentially drain the battery. Disabling the kick sensor in the vehicle settings has been suggested as a solution, but this may not be ideal for all owners.
  • Water Ingress in Rear Interior: A few 2022 Toyota Sienna owners have reported water ingress in the rear interior when parked on an incline and it rains heavily. Toyota has not yet acknowledged or addressed this issue publicly.
  • Second Row Seats Not Stowing Properly: Some Sienna owners have reported that the second-row seats do not stow properly, making it difficult to utilize the full cargo space of the vehicle. This has been an ongoing issue with the Sienna, and despite complaints, it has not been significantly improved in the 2022 model.
  • Tire Sensor Issues: A few Sienna owners have reported issues with the tire sensors, which may need to be addressed at the Toyota dealership. This can lead to uncertainty about the vehicle's tire pressure and potential safety concerns.
  • Interior Design and Functionality: Some Sienna owners have expressed disappointment with the interior design and functionality of the vehicle. Complaints include the removal of standard features like a roof rack, coin box, and sunglass storage, as well as the cheapened experience in higher-end models. The lack of closed storage areas for small items and the design of the entertainment system have also been criticized.
  • Ride and Handling with Additional Rear Weight: Some Sienna owners have reported that the ride and handling of the vehicle are negatively affected when there is additional weight in the rear. This is due to the increased weight from the hybrid battery, which can make the front of the vehicle feel less stable or solid when driven with rear weight.

These common problems with the 2022 Toyota Sienna have been reported by owners and may not represent all vehicles of this model. It is essential to research and consider these issues when purchasing a new vehicle and to address any concerns with the dealership or manufacturer.

  • VIN: 5TDZSKFC0NS

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-14
  • VIN: 5TDKRKECXNS
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: When engaging the cruise control, the vehicle continued to accelerate even after I let off the button. During a trip with this vehicle on September 14, 2024, this vehicle did this twice. I have never driven another vehicle where this occurs. If this is supposed to be a "feature", it's unsafe and should not be legal. If it remains legal, there should at least be some kind of safety sticker.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-18
  • VIN: 5TDKRKEC0NS
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-03
  • VIN: 5TDZSKFC3NS
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: I have a 2022 Toyota Sienna and have noticed that when I am braking (especially at low speeds while stopping at a STOP sign or a Red Light),the car "lurches" forward as if the car is accelerating a little bit. I have to slam the brakes to stop the vehicle. It feels really dangerous - it might hit a car in front or a kid in a neighborhood! I will reading through Toyota Sienna forums and found scores of similar incidents reported! Hope Toyota takes notice and fixes this.

SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-23
  • VIN: 5TDKRKEC7NS
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: This Hybrid LE model brake system is very poor. If we press the break pedal it stops 5-10 meter far. Urgently need for recall and rectify this major issue to avoid more accidents and property damage to others on the road .

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-06
  • VIN: 5TDYRKEC2NS
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Note: I have filed a complaint with the Florida Attorney General's Office Health Hazard. Mold Issue. Flooding Issue. Failing weather striping. We had a weather strip on the rear door get misplaced or is failing to stay on our 2022 Sienna. Toyota won't cover it. And we will have to make a claim per their recommendation, unsure. Third seat rusted; it was submerged in water. Didn't smell it or see it. 20k in damages. We never use it for anything except for groceries in the stroller. The worst decision I have made is bringing it to Toyota, because with it closed up, in the heat, the Van now has as all this mold. Before it was just wet in the 3rd seat compartment. It also had a Frog in it as large as a small hand. Improper storage. Toyota corporation also won't help. Don't be fooled and think this vehicle is imperfect. The new and previous generations have had this problem. They leak from the top and bottom of this door seal. Toyota seams to refuse to make a TSB. You do not have to look far online to find the reported issues. If it can happen to normal people like us doing normal things and many other people like us reporting it, it can and will happen to anyone. A Vehicle less than 3 years old should not be leaking. I have spoken online to other owners experiencing the same. But now since I see Toyota will not assist, and made it worse for us by improperly storing the Van and taking too long to respond. Now we cannot use it and it is a health hazard. Instead of helping me, they instruct me to file a insurance claim I would otherwise not have had to file, if I just air dried the Van. They should have acknowledged the problem and taken the opportunity to improve the design. Not create a mold situation for the customer and tell them to file a claim. This is a quality control issue. SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-24
  • VIN: 5TDDSKFC9NS
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: I bought this van new in March 2022. Since I have owned it I have had countless instances where I will have my brakes applied and the van will suddenly accelerate with the brake still applied. This has happened multiple times when I am braking on hills & I have nearly ran stop signs because of it, there are some dangerous intersections I travel frequently and this is a major safety concern. This needs to be addressed by Toyota or someone is going to end up killed or seriously injured in an accident from this malfunction. I am truly concerned for mine and my children’s safety when I am traveling in my van. I can’t trade it in because I still owe more than trade in value and can’t afford to be upside down. NHTSA please help me.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-23
  • VIN: 5TDJSKFC5NS
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: The brakes in my 2022 Sienna Hybrid XLE randomly slip when stopping. It happens rarely, but is completely unexpected when it does and I can't reproduce it on demand. It feels like I've hit a small patch of black ice or released my foot from the brake for a split second (when I didn't!). My husband rarely drives the van, and it happened to him yesterday. Last week it 'released' for the longest it's ever done, maybe a full second or more. It is summer here and I was driving on normal pavement, so there is no reason that I shouldn't have been in full control of the stop! Thankfully there wasn't anything in front of me, but if it were a different situation it could have been VERY BAD.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-12
  • VIN: 5TDDSKFCXNS
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: When coming to a slowdown at the light, lightly braking to a slow, the brakes would suddenly disengage and the car lunges forward, I have to release an reapply the pedal in order for braking to stop. This has happened multiple times, but the most recent, I almost ran into the person in front of me because the brakes disengaged. It doesn’t happen all the time, but every once in a while with unknown parameters, it happens and is very scary. I drive with a lot of fear now, especially with my kids in the car.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-31
  • VIN: 5TDKRKEC1NS
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Occasionally, if I drive over uneven surface or make a turn while breaking, then the brake lets up for a second and the car lurches forward. This has happened probably probably 5-6 times a month for the past 7 months we've owned the car. We live near some hills, so it most often occurs when going downhill and I'm breaking at/below residential speeds. After the second of letting up, the break resumes as normal. My husband has also had this issue happen to him, although only once because he drives it less often. -The car is available for inspection on request. -So far, there haven't been any related accidents because I've never been in an emergency breaking situation. -The problem has not been confirmed by an independent service center. Before we purchased the car, we had a Toyota Dealer mechanic (who was not connected to the dealership selling the car) do a routine inspection and said the breaks were in good shape. Because the break issue only happens in certain conditions, we did not notice the break issue until after the car was purchased. -The car hasn't been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance, etc. -There have been no warnings or other symptoms.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-29
  • VIN: 5TDKRKEC4NS
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: I bought this vehicle new and it has an issue with braking. Once in a while when you hit your brake the car wants to keep going. Kind of like accelerating on its own. I let Toyota know about this a couple of times when I went in for scheduling maintenance. They say that they can’t find anything wrong. It’s has happened at least twenty times to me and more lately. Yesterday 5/29 it happened twice, and is very scary. If you go online you will see other people complain about the same problem. Sooner or later something bad is going to happen. I bought the van for my wife, and she is to afraid to drive it any longer

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-27
  • VIN: 5TDYRKEC8NS
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: In 2023, I purchased a used 2022 Toyota Sienna with 39k miles on it. I have noticed that when I am coming to a slow stop, the car will not stop right away as expected. Instead, it moves forward. It also happens with slow right or left turns. These incidents are sporadic, occurring at least once every time I drive. On this Memorial Day, I encountered a very dangerous situation while driving on the highway. I needed to brake for an emergency, but the vehicle refused to brake, nearly causing me to lose control. Following this incident, I conducted research and discovered that a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB-0047-24) exists. I took the car to the Toyota dealership, applied the TSB, and covered the full cost. I am uncertain whether the problem will receive a fix. Based on my knowledge, I believe this is a safety concern, and Toyota should investigate further.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-15
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 5TDDSKFC9NS
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: When I step on the brakes it slows initially and then it feels like the brake just lets go of its grip and the car keeps going or even accelerates and you have to slam on the brake to get it to stop. The last time this happened, it resulted in a crash with my daughter in the car. Toyota is telling me the brakes are fine but I do not feel safe driving it. There have been no lights or warning lamps and Toyota says they inspected the issue and found nothing but it has happened multiple times.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-31
  • VIN: 5TDJRKEC5NS
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: Right after parking my 2022 Toyota Sienna XLE, I heard a VERY LOUD boom from overhead. It sounded like an explosion. Upon getting out of the car to see if something hit the car, I noticed the glass of the sunroof had a shattered pattern (but none of the glass actually came apart). My and my family's safety is at risk because at any moment, glass could shatter and enter the car. Fortunately, my moonroof cover is closed. Other people are at risk because if glass breaks off while I'm driving, it could hit other cars or pedestrians. I am writing this within 30 minutes of the explosion and have not taken it to a dealer, independent service center, nor has it been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives, or others. There were no warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms of the problem prior to this incident.

Negative 2022 Toyota Sienna car reviews

  1. Alessandro Waters 2024-11-04

    1. The remote start could use some improvement. It seems to have trouble working even when you're close to the vehicle. 2. I've had some trouble with the GPS. It often takes me on longer routes than necessary. 3. The shifter can be a bit finicky, often shifting the vehicle down to 4 speed. I've found that flipping it over helps keep it in 6 speed. 4. The fuel efficiency varies between 34.5-38 miles per gallon, but overall it's pretty good.

  2. Erik Rodriguez 2024-10-16

The door may be left open without any concern, as the buttons will function properly upon return. Additionally, the second row seats are not removable like those in the Chrysler or the Odyssey. However, I have confidence in this vehicle and do not regret my purchase. My Rottweiler may miss the Odyssey, but I am satisfied with my decision.

  3. Jay Crooks 2024-01-11

It's a hybrid which is awesome! However, have you ever wondered why Toyota didn't go further and make it a plug-in like Chrysler did? Even though Toyota has more advanced technology.

Positive 2022 Toyota Sienna car reviews

  1. Adolph White 2024-11-22

This is my 4th Sienna. I love the MPG! I recently took a thousand mile trip and enjoyed every single mile of it.

  2. Rogers Breitenberg 2024-11-05

Definitely no negative comments about the car or the Toyota service. I must say, my dealer provided exceptional service and I am very pleased.

  3. Dagmar Rohan 2024-09-25

Hey there! We have lots of cool gadgets available for you!

  4. Adolfo Quigley 2024-09-02

I really appreciate the Trim Woodland Edition XLE. The exterior and interior are exactly what I was looking for, and the color and features meet all of my specifications and requirements. I love it a lot!

  5. Carleton Nolan 2024-08-27

Great car! It has good mileage and is comfortable on long drives.
