2010 Toyota Sienna problems
The Toyota Sienna is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Toyota primarily for the North American market. It is named for the Italian city of Siena, in the region of Tuscany. It replaced the first generation Previa van in 1997 with a more conventional front-wheel drive layout and shares a heavily revised platform with the Camry. Both the Previa and original Sienna were smaller than the other minivans they competed against, but a redesign in 2003 (for the 2004 model year) increased the dimensions to match those of its competitors.
It was redesigned again in 2010 (for the 2011 model year). A 2020 redesign (for the 2021 model year) saw the Sienna becoming a hybrid vehicle for its fourth generation. While previous generations of the Sienna were exported to select Asian and European markets, the fourth generation is the first to be produced outside of the United States as Chinese production commenced in July 2021 by two Toyota joint ventures. In China, it is also marketed as the Toyota Granvia.
Following the discontinuation of General Motors's all-wheel drive minivans in 2006, the Sienna was the only minivan in its class offered with AWD in North America until the 2021 Chrysler Pacifica was introduced with an AWD option in 2020.
The Sienna is not available in Japan and Australia as it is not produced in a right-hand drive configuration, and the segment in these countries is already occupied by the Alphard/Vellfire and the HiAce/Granvia respectively.
As of the fourth generation, introduced in 2020, the Sienna is now built on Toyota's TNGA-K platform, which it shares with most of Toyota’s other large MPVs and crossovers.

- Summary: We recently had a full diagnostic check done on our vehicle (199 point at Parkway Automotive in Little Rock, Arkansas) that listed some components in need of repair. The only part involving the electrical system needing repair was our battery which was testing as no longer holding enough charge. We took the vehicle to Sam's Club in North Little Rock, AR within the last 2-3 weeks and had the battery replaced with a new Duracell with 3 year warranty. We drove away with no issues with the vehicle and used it for local driving without issues for those 2-3 weeks. The morning of Thursday, December 29, 2022 we started the car to drive to our church about 2 miles away with our four young children (1, 5, 8, 10). In the short drive, dash lights were flickering and the nav/audio screen system was turning off and restarting. Upon arrival at the church, as we were parking the car, gray smoke began to come from the hood quickly. The children were all still strapped in seatbelts and carseat, so we quickly unloaded them from the car and took them inside the building. While we were unloading them from the vehicle we observed the following: -black smoke pouring from driver's side hood -sparks falling on the ground from driver's side engine compartment, near bumper -spurts of fire coming from the hood and below the bumper on driver's side -charring and melting coming from the vents/lights where each child was seated in the 2nd and 3rd row seating After calling the fire department and locating a fire extinguisher, the fire quickly grew into an uncontrollable blaze so we all went inside the building as quickly as possible to avoid injury. Shortly thereafter, the battery itself seemed to explode (a loud explosion was heard and then a smaller one) and the driver windshield was blown. The fire was large enough to seem to be traveling toward the gas tank and we were afraid of a big disaster. The fire department then arrived and extinguished the fire and made a report.

- Summary: One day when we tried to buckle the driver's side seat belt, little pieces flew out of the receiver side and it will no longer buckle. We took it to the Toyota dealer in N Syracuse NY and were told it would be a cost of $212 to replace and that it would be a two-week wait for the part to come in. This means that the owner and her two young babies would have to drive in an unsafe car, ILLEGALLY for two weeks putting her life and the life of her children in danger. The Toyota dealer inspected the seat belt and confirmed it was a defect and had failed. I called Toyota customer service and was told that there were no recalls for this defect and they would take no responsibility for the dangerous situation or consequences because the car was no longer under warranty. In fact, this is a problem that has been affecting many owners as indicated by an online search. Also, the fact that the dealer has to wait two weeks to obtain the part indicates that this seatbelt has failed many owners and they have used up the supply. This should be a recall situation but Toyota will take no responsibility.

THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF TOYOTA SIENNA'S ON THE ROAD WITH THIS ISSUE AND IT IS COMPLETELY UNSAFE AND TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE THAT TOYOTA REFUSES TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE 2010'S AND COVER THE COSTS TO FIX THE PROBLEM.

THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 82,000.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 8 recalls for different components of the 2010 Toyota Sienna.

- Components: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
- Summary: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2005-2007 and 2009-2010 Toyota Sienna vehicles. In the affected vehicles, due to a problem within the shift lock assembly, the shift lever may be moved out of the 'Park' position without depressing the brake pedal.
- Consequence: If the shift lever can be moved from the "Park" position without depressing the brake pedal and the parking brake is not applied, the vehicle may roll, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the shift lock solenoid and reapply the grease, free of charge. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's number for this recall is H0V. Vehicles that were previously recalled under campaign 13V-429 are not affected by this recall.

- Summary: Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) is recalling certain 2005-2011 4Runner, Highlander, Sequoia, and Sienna, 2005-2010 Avalon and Tundra, 2006-2008 Camry Solara, 2006-2010 Highlander hybrid, 2006-2011 Rav4 and Tacoma, 2007-2010 FJ Cruiser, 2007-2011 Camry hybrid, 2009-2010 Venza, 2010-2012 Prius, 1988-1990 and 2005-2010 Camry, and 1989 and 2009-2010 Corolla vehicles equipped with aftermarket accessory seat heaters with a copper strand heating element. The electrical wiring in the seat heaters may be damaged when the seat cushion is compressed.
- Consequence: If damaged, the copper strand heating element may short circuit, increasing the risk of a fire.
- Remedy: SET will notify owners, and dealers will disconnect the seat heaters, free of charge, and refund the purchase price of the seat heater accessory. The recall began on July 14, 2016. Owners may contact SET customer service at 1-866-405-4226. SET number for this recall is SET16B.

- Summary: Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) is recalling certain model year 2010-2011 Prius and Corolla, 2009-2011 Venza, 2006-2010 Avalon, 2007-2010 FJ Cruiser, 2005-2011 Sienna and Sequoia, 2006-2011 Tacoma 4x2 and 4x4, Camry, Highlander, Tundra 4x2 and 4x4, and 2007-2011 Rav4 and 4Runner. The affected vehicles may experience compression of the seat cushion which may damage the seat heater wiring.
- Consequence: Damage to the seat heater wiring could cause the wires to short, increasing the risk of the seat burning and causing personal injury to the occupant.
- Remedy: SET will notify owners, and dealers will disconnect the heaters with copper strand heating elements and refund the purchase price of the seat heater accessory, free of charge. The recall is expected to began in January 2015. Owners may contact SET customer service at 1-866-405-4226.

- Summary: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2004-2011 Sienna vehicles originally sold in, or currently registered in, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. The affected vehicles have a spare tire carrier assembly mounted under the vehicle whose attachment cable may corrode due to high concentrations of road salt splashing onto the spare tire carrier.
- Consequence: If the carrier cable is corroded due to road salt, the spare tire may separate from the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Toyota sent owners in August 2014 an interim notification to advise owners of the recall and that dealers will perform an interim remedy to remove the spare tire and relocate it to the luggage compartment, free of charge. Owners are being mailed a second letter as parts become available and dealers will replace the spare tire carrier assembly with an improved one, free of charge. The remedy campaign is being performed in phases. The first phase of the recall began July 7, 2015. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. NOTE: 2004-2010 Siennas subject to this recall were subject to recall campaign 10V-160 initiated in 2010. Those owners are advised that they must have their vehicles remedied again under this campaign and that having the earlier recall completed did not remedy their vehicles. Additionally, model year 1998-2003 Siennas were recalled as part of safety recall 10V-160. Owners of those vehicles that have not had not the remedy performed on their vehicles, should contact their Toyota dealer to schedule a free repair.

During modification by SET to include accessories such as leather seat covers, seat heaters or headrest DVD systems, these vehicles may not have had the passenger seat occupant sensing system calibration tested. Without passing the calibration test, the occupant sensing system may not operate as designed.
- Consequence: If the front passenger seat occupant sensing system is out of calibration, the front passenger airbags may not deploy or they may deploy inappropriately for the passenger's size and position. This could increase the risk of personal injury during the event of a vehicle crash necessitating airbag deployment.
- Remedy: Southeast Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will test the sensitivity of the occupant detection sensors, and recalibrate them as necessary. The recall began on March 21, 2013. Owners may contact Southeast Toyota at 1-800-301-6859.

I did a lot of research and found myself torn between the Sienna and Odyssey. As a person with a disability, it was important for me to find an AWD vehicle that could accommodate both myself and my scooter. Thankfully, the Sienna fits the bill perfectly. With ample room to bend my wooden right leg and hit the gas, and a high dashboard that doesn't interfere, I couldn't be happier with my choice. The AC outlet is also a great feature that allows me to charge my scooter on the go. The Silver Pine Mica with a Taupe Interior is a beautiful combination that gives the van a luxurious feel, with wood grain accents on the steering wheel, dash, and arm rests. The folding mirrors are also a game changer and should be standard on all vans. While I have every option on this van except for Lasser Cruise, HID Headlights, Spoiler & Satellite Radio, I do wish that the HID Headlights were standard with the Limited Package.

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share my experience with my Toyota Sienna 2010. Although I have always been a fan of Toyota cars, I had some trouble with the air conditioning unit in the second and third rows of my Sienna. Unfortunately, the unit stopped working just three days after I purchased the car. I had to spend a total of 10 hours at the dealership to replace the unit, which was quite frustrating. I reached out to Toyota Canada to express my concerns, but I have not received a response yet. I would appreciate any assistance you can provide in resolving this issue. Congratulations on your purchase of the Sienna XLE with value package #4! It's great to hear that you're enjoying the driving experience. The interior layout is well thought out and the NAV/DVD systems are impressive. It would be even better if there was an option to allow a passenger to operate the NAV system while the car is moving. Additionally, it would be more convenient if the DVD's could be loaded in the center stack like the Odyssey. It's interesting to hear that you did a lot of research between Honda and Toyota, and ultimately chose the Sienna for its value and features. Thank you for sharing your experience!

We just purchased this car last month and it's already my favorite car. The space is amazing, the power sliding doors are great, and the drive is far better than I could have imagined.

I paid an additional two thousand dollars to have the navigation system installed, but unfortunately, it has not met my expectations. On one occasion, my wife and I had to pull over in busy traffic to reset it, which was quite dangerous. Additionally, Toyota does not allow the passenger to use the navigation system while the vehicle is in motion, which is a unique feature compared to other navigation systems. This has been a disappointment for me and has led me to use my iPhone for navigation instead. Furthermore, the navigation system can only be updated every two years, which means that the information on restaurants and highways may not be up to date. When an upgrade is available, it costs $260, which is quite expensive. I have noticed that there are many complaints online about this navigation system. Therefore, I would not recommend purchasing this van if you are looking for a reliable navigation system.

I recently purchased a brand new Sienna. Unfortunately, shortly after leaving the dealership, my wife and mother experienced some trouble with the car. When my wife turned on the heater, the engine began making loud thumping sounds and my mother noticed a glow coming from under the hood. Worried that the engine might explode, they quickly pulled over and turned off the car. Despite the scary situation, they were able to safely exit the vehicle and wait for assistance. Toyota has been unable to diagnose the issue, but they have been helpful in finding a solution. I appreciate their efforts to ensure my safety and satisfaction with their product.

Driving on the highway can be quite uncomfortable due to the bumpy and loud ride. It can even be difficult to enjoy music and can cause headaches, especially for passengers in the second and third row seats. I would not recommend this vehicle, especially for families with small children.

The gas pedal of my 2010 Sienna XLE minivan stuck twice, which was a shocking experience. Despite pressing on the brake pedal, the minivan did not stop, and I had to turn it off. Toyota of Knoxville attributed the issue to the floor mats, but even after removing them, the gas pedal stuck again. As a result, I decided to sell the minivan in February and purchased an X5 BMW, which is truly an amazing vehicle.
