The Toyota Sienna is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Toyota primarily for the North American market. It is named for the Italian city of Siena, in the region of Tuscany. It replaced the first generation Previa van in 1997 with a more conventional front-wheel drive layout and shares a heavily revised platform with the Camry. While previous generations of the Sienna were exported to select Asian and European markets, the fourth generation is the first to be produced outside of the United States as Chinese production commenced in July 2021 by two Toyota joint ventures. In China, it is also marketed as the Toyota Granvia.
Following the discontinuation of General Motors's all-wheel drive minivans in 2006, the Sienna was the only minivan in its class offered with AWD in North America until the 2021 Chrysler Pacifica was introduced with an AWD option in 2020.
The Sienna is not available in Japan and Australia as it is not produced in a right-hand drive configuration, and the segment in these countries is already occupied by the Alphard/Vellfire and the HiAce/Granvia respectively.
As of the fourth generation, introduced in 2020, the Sienna is now built on Toyota's TNGA-K platform, which it shares with most of Toyota’s other large MPVs and crossovers.

I WAS TOLD THAT THE STEERING FAILURE WAS CAUSED BY ONE BOLT COMING LOOSE. THE STEERING FAILURE WAS CORRECTED BY "RE-TIGHTENED' BOLT WITH LOCK TIGHT". IN SUMMARY, THE REPAIR OF A GEAR SHIFT BY A CERTIFIED TOYOTA DEALER SERVICE CENTER RESULTED IN COMPLETE STEERING FAILURE DUE TO ONE BOLT THAT "BACKED OFF FROM CONNECTION" OR THAT WAS NOT PROPERLY TIGHTENED OR SECURED. IT IS VERY CONCERNING THAT TOYOTA?S STEERING COLUMN DESIGN HAS THE POTENTIAL TO CAUSE COMPLETE STEERING FAILURE WHEN ONE BOLT COMES LOOSE. IT IS ALSO A MAJOR ISSUE THAT A CERTIFIED TOYOTA DEALER SERVICE CENTER IS UNABLE TO SAFELY DISSEMBLE AND REASSEMBLE THE STEERING COLUMN AND PROVIDE A SAFE AND DRIVABLE VEHICLE. I WOULD LIKE TO FIND OUT HOW OFTEN THIS TYPE OF STEERING FAILURE HAS OCCURRED ON THIS AND SIMILARLY DESIGNED TOYOTA VEHICLES. - Summary: EVER SINCE NOVMBER, 2008, MY 2002 TOYOTA SIENNA PASSENGER SIDE POWER DOOR, HAS INTERMITTENTLY FAILED TO OPEN EITHER BY ACTIVATING THE BUTTON ON THE INSIDE OF THE DOOR COLUMN, BY PULLING THE DOOR HANDLE OUTSIDE, OR THE INSTRUMENT PANEL DOOR BUTTON, OR WORSE, AFTER OPENING, WILL NOT CLOSE. THE DEALER HAD TO REINITIALIZE THE ECU IN NOVEMBER, 2008, AND HAVE HAD INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS SINCE. NOW, SINCE AT LEAST DECEMBER, 2012, THE SLIDING DOOR WILL NOT OPEN AT ALL BY ANY OF THE 3 METHODS AND CANNOT BE REINITIALIZED. ALSO, AT TIMES THE MANUAL DRIVERS SIDE PASSENGER DOOR, IN THE PAST ~ 1 1/2 YEARS WILL NOT OPEN EITHER FROM INSIDE DOOR BUTTON RELEASE OR OUTSIDE DOOR HANDLE AND PASSENGERS HAVE TO CLIMB OVER FROM THE FRONT SEATS TO ENTER OR CLIMB OVER THE FRONT SEAT & CONSOLE TO EXIT THE VEHICLE. THE WHEEL IS STEEL AND IS LOCATED SO THE TIRES KICK UP WATER AND ROAD SAND AND, WITH THIS ORIENTATION, WATER IS TRAPPED, LIKE IN A BOWL, AND SITS ON THE STEEL. THE PAINT HAS LONG BEEN BLASTED AWAY FROM THE SAND EXPOSURE AND NOW THE WHEEL IS RUSTED SO BADLY IT IS EXTREMELY THIN AND CANNOT BE USED WITHOUT RISKING FAILURE OF THE WHEEL, ESPECIALLY ON THE FRONT WHERE LOADS CAN REACH IN EXCESS OF 2500 POUNDS IN A DYNAMIC FATIGUE SITUATION. IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE THIS SIENNA HAS BEEN RECALLED ONCE ALREADY FOR RUST IN THIS AREA, THANKS TO YOU GUYS, AS RUST WAS DAMAGING THE RETAINING SYSTEM AND THE TIRE WAS FALLING OFF IN TRAFFIC. - Summary: I WAS PULLING FORWARD FROM A RED LIGHT, SLOWLY ACCELERATING. SOMEONE CUT ME OFF, I SWERVED, AND THEN ACCELERATED INTO TRAFFIC. THE CAR STARTED ACCELERATING ON ITS OWN, FROM ABOUT 35 MPH (WHERE I PULLED MY FOOT OFF THE ACCELERATOR PAD TO "HOLD" THE SPEED BUT NOT CONTINUE ACCELERATING) UP TO 55 MPH--THIS HAPPENED VERY QUICKLY, IN A SMATTERING OF SECONDS. I REMEMBERED READING THAT YOU SHOULD JUST SLAM ON THE BRAKE AND HOLD IT DOWN HARD, WHICH I DID. THIS DID STOP FURTHER ACCELERATION, BUT IT DID NOT IMMEDIATELY SLOW THE CAR. I WAS ABLE TO SLOW THE CAR IN ABOUT 10 SECONDS, THOUGH DECELERATION WAS VERY SLOW. WHEN I FINALLY RETURNED TO 35 MPH, I DID NOT ATTEMPT TO ACCELERATE AGAIN FOR ABOUT TWO MILES. I STOPPED AT ANOTHER TRAFFIC LIGHT, AND WHEN I STARTED FORWARD FROM THE LIGHT, I DID NOT DEPRESS THE ACCELERATOR PAD WITH MY TYPICAL FORCE, ACCELERATING AT ABOUT HALF THE SPEED I NORMALLY WOULD, AS I DID NOT WANT TO BE TAKEN BY SURPRISE BY THE UNEXPECTED SUDDEN ACCELERATION AGAIN. WHEN IT DOES NOT WORK THE MOTOR TRIES TO OPEN THE DOOR BUT SEEMS LIKE THE DOOR DOES NOT RELEASE. WHEN THE DRIVERS SIDE PASSENGER DOOR DOES NOT OPEN THE FAMILY HAS TO ENTER OR EXIT THROUGH ONE OF THE FRONT DOORS AND CLIMB THROUGH TO THE BACK SEATS. THERE IS NO INTERNAL MANUAL OVERRIDE OF THESE DOORS. THIS IS NOT SAFE. IN AN EMERGENCY MY FAMILY WILL HAVE TO GO THROUGH THE FRONT DOORS OR BREAK AND GO THROUGH THE WINDOWS. THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD. The vehicle is incredibly responsive to steering and handling. The variable valve timing addition makes it even more responsive than the 2000 year model. However, the gas mileage could use some improvement. When compared with Chrysler's larger 3.8 liter engine, they get about the same mileage on the highway.

I used to be a hardcore SUV driver until I test drove this used Sienna XLE. I was thrilled with its performance and it zooms better than the Xterra (slug) that I was driving. The Sienna XLE has leather seats, a million cupholders, and sliding doors which I find very convenient. Although I love the sunroof, I wish the dash wouldn't give off such a glare. I also plan to get a DVD player in a bag or the headrests. I managed to get mine for 16,500, which is a great deal considering the bluebook value is 20K.

I love this car! The ride is so smooth and the seats are really comfortable and roomy. Even though it's considered a smaller mini-van, I find that it has plenty of space for me. If you have children, there won't be any space issues. The back seats are best for kids, but adults may find the leg room a little tight if the seats are moved in.

I have experienced ride and tire wear issues since the beginning. Despite purchasing a new wheel as suggested by the dealer, the problem persisted. It is my opinion that Toyota Customer Service has not met my expectations. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend purchasing a vehicle from Toyota of Melbourne, FL.

We purchased our Sienna during its first year of introduction and have driven 36,000 miles in 36 months. After 6,000 miles, we noticed some rattling from various parts of the mini-van. Unfortunately, one of the door screws fell off. However, after balancing the tires, all the rattles went away except for the sliding door at 30mph. We believe that the Firestone tires are the cause of this issue. During an emissions test, the mechanic informed us that other owners have also reported similar complaints. We also noticed that the second seat armrest is too weak. When passengers exit the van, they tend to use the armrest as a rail to avoid falling, which tends to loosen it. We suspect that a heavy person could lean on the armrest and break it.

This van is not the most exciting vehicle out there. The design and driving experience are not particularly noteworthy. However, there are a few issues that I would like to address. Firstly, there is a known issue with the engine not starting if the IAC valve is dirty. Secondly, the rear brakes tend to squeal, but this was covered by warranty and a TSB was issued. Lastly, the turn radius is not great, which can make three-point turns a bit of a hassle. Despite these issues, I am still considering the Honda Odyssey as an alternative option.

We initially chose the Toyota due to its reputation for reliability. However, we have experienced major issues twice in the past two years. The first time, it took three trips to the dealership to identify a cracked fuel tank, which was an unprecedented issue for a new car. Unfortunately, yesterday the van began making grinding and whining noises, and today it wouldn't go into gear and had to be towed to the dealership. We suspect that the transmission is faulty. I bought my Sienna brand new in 2001 and unfortunately, it did not live up to my expectations. Despite paying thousands more for its 'legendary' reliability, I found that it contained many biodegradable parts that needed replacement or servicing within 6 weeks of the warranty ending, with only 25000 miles on the vehicle. I was disappointed to find that Toyota was not able to offer any help, and even charged $75 for a dashboard light bulb. I was also told that there was no fix for brake noise in Sienna's, 'they just do that'. I ended up spending nearly $2000 in repairs to fix everything before selling it. However, during the inspection, the dealer told a prospective buyer that the brakes squealed because they were aftermarket, which I found quite amusing.

We have really enjoyed our Sienna XLE, which we purchased after trading in our 2000 LE. While we had originally planned to keep the XLE for 10 years, we have encountered a few issues. One of the biggest problems we have experienced is with the brakes, which have been squeaking loudly. We understand that this has been a known issue with Siennas since 2001, and we would love to hear from others who have experienced the same problem. Unfortunately, Toyota has been unable to offer a solution, and their mechanics have suggested braking harder as a potential fix. Additionally, we have noticed that the paint chips easily and the light-colored carpet shows dirt easily.
