2002 Toyota Sienna problems

toyota logo

The Toyota Sienna is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Toyota primarily for the North American market. It is named for the Italian city of Siena, in the region of Tuscany. It replaced the first generation Previa van in 1997 with a more conventional front-wheel drive layout and shares a heavily revised platform with the Camry. Both the Previa and original Sienna were smaller than the other minivans they competed against, but a redesign in 2003 (for the 2004 model year) increased the dimensions to match those of its competitors.

It was redesigned again in 2010 (for the 2011 model year). The third generation Sienna went on sale in the United States in February 2010 and is the first Sienna to ever receive a "Top Safety Pick" award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. A 2020 redesign (for the 2021 model year) saw the Sienna becoming a hybrid vehicle for its fourth generation. While previous generations of the Sienna were exported to select Asian and European markets, the fourth generation is the first to be produced outside of the United States as Chinese production commenced in July 2021 by two Toyota joint ventures. In China, it is also marketed as the Toyota Granvia.

Following the discontinuation of General Motors's all-wheel drive minivans in 2006, the Sienna was the only minivan in its class offered with AWD in North America until the 2021 Chrysler Pacifica was introduced with an AWD option in 2020.

The Sienna is not available in Japan and Australia as it is not produced in a right-hand drive configuration, and the segment in these countries is already occupied by the Alphard/Vellfire and the HiAce/Granvia respectively.

As of the fourth generation, introduced in 2020, the Sienna is now built on Toyota's TNGA-K platform, which it shares with most of Toyota’s other large MPVs and crossovers.

Common 2002 Toyota Sienna problems

The 2002 Toyota Sienna is a popular choice for those seeking a reliable family car, but like any other vehicle, it has its share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues with the 2002 Toyota Sienna, based on complaints from owners:

  1. Engine Seals Leaking Oil: One of the most common problems with the 2002 Toyota Sienna is the engine seals leaking oil, particularly at the rear of the engine. This issue can be uncomfortable to address, as it requires working in a less than ideal position.
  2. Steering Rack Leakage and Hardening: The steering rack in the 2002 Toyota Sienna has been reported to leak and harden when idle, but soften when moving. This problem typically starts within a year of ownership and can persist for an extended period.
  3. Headlamp Bulb Fading: After changing the bulbs in the 2002 Toyota Sienna, owners have reported that the headlamps start to fade, especially when using non-original bulbs from Nigeria. To avoid this issue, it is recommended to use original Philip bulbs.
  4. Susceptibility to Rust: Cars imported from snowy regions or those that have spent their entire life in regions with poor road conditions are more prone to rust, particularly in the underneath areas. This rust can lead to broken lower arms and destroyed tires if not addressed promptly.
  5. Drum Brakes and Water: The drum brakes in the 2002 Toyota Sienna are known to hate water, especially during floods. This can cause the brakes to bind, leading to potential accidents. To avoid this issue, it is recommended to avoid using the hand brake and to invest in good brake lining.
  6. Power Steering Pump Seal Seepage: The power steering pump in the 2002 Toyota Sienna can develop a seal seepage issue, leading to a slight humming sound during highway runs. Regular monitoring and maintenance can help address this issue before it becomes a more significant problem.
  7. Power Sliding Doors: The power sliding doors in the 2002 Toyota Sienna are known to break down within the next 25,000 miles. This issue is common and can be costly to repair.
  8. Transmission Failure: Transmission failure is a significant issue in the 2002 Toyota Sienna, with six complaints reported. This problem can lead to engine diagnostic light on and can be costly to repair.
  9. Automatic Locks Continually Unlocking Themselves: The automatic locks in the 2002 Toyota Sienna have been reported to continually unlock themselves, leading to potential security issues.
  10. Blowing Smoke from the Tail Pipe: Four complaints have been reported about the 2002 Toyota Sienna blowing smoke from the tail pipe, indicating potential engine issues.
  11. Door Handles Breaking Off: The door handles in the 2002 Toyota Sienna have been reported to break off completely, particularly in the 2001 and 1998 models.
  12. Melting Dashboards: The dashboards in the 2002 Toyota Sienna have been known to melt under the heat of the sun, leading to the extrusion of a strange, goo-like substance that is oddly shiny and sticky. This issue has led to lawsuits and a warranty extension from Toyota.
  13. Spare Tire Cable Corrosion: The spare tire cable in the 2002 Toyota Sienna can corrode due to excessive road salt, leading to the spare tire separating from the vehicle and potentially causing a vehicle crash. This issue is particularly prevalent in cold climate regions of the United States where road salt is frequently used.

It is important to note that while these issues are common, they do not affect all 2002 Toyota Sienna vehicles. Regular maintenance and monitoring can help address these issues before they become significant problems.

STEERING,POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-05-05
  • VIN: 4T3ZF13C12U
  • Components: STEERING,POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: OUR 2002 TOYOTA SIENNA HAD THE GEAR SHIFT REPAIRED AT A MAJOR ATLANTA AREA TOYOTA DEALER ON MAY 5, 2014. THE GEAR SHIFT REPLACEMENT REQUIRED THE ENTIRE STEERING COLUMN TO BE DISASSEMBLED. ABOUT ONE WEEK AFTER THAT REPAIR, THE STEERING COMPLETELY FAILED. THE STEERING WHEEL TURNED WITH ABSOLUTELY NO CONTROL OF THE WHEELS. BY SHEER LUCK THIS STEERING FAILURE OCCURRED IN A PARKING LOT AFTER JUST TRAVELING ON THE INTERSTATE. HAD THIS STEERING FAILURE OCCURRED AT INTERSTATE SPEEDS, THIS MAY HAVE BEEN FATAL. THE VEHICLE WAS RETURNED TO THE SAME MAJOR ATLANTA AREA TOYOTA DEALER AND THE CAUSE OF THE STEERING FAILURE WAS IDENTIFIED AS "STEERING JOINT BOLT BACKED OFF FROM CONNECTION". I WAS TOLD THAT THE STEERING FAILURE WAS CAUSED BY ONE BOLT COMING LOOSE. THE STEERING FAILURE WAS CORRECTED BY "RE-TIGHTENED' BOLT WITH LOCK TIGHT". IN SUMMARY, THE REPAIR OF A GEAR SHIFT BY A CERTIFIED TOYOTA DEALER SERVICE CENTER RESULTED IN COMPLETE STEERING FAILURE DUE TO ONE BOLT THAT "BACKED OFF FROM CONNECTION" OR THAT WAS NOT PROPERLY TIGHTENED OR SECURED. IT IS VERY CONCERNING THAT TOYOTA?S STEERING COLUMN DESIGN HAS THE POTENTIAL TO CAUSE COMPLETE STEERING FAILURE WHEN ONE BOLT COMES LOOSE. IT IS ALSO A MAJOR ISSUE THAT A CERTIFIED TOYOTA DEALER SERVICE CENTER IS UNABLE TO SAFELY DISSEMBLE AND REASSEMBLE THE STEERING COLUMN AND PROVIDE A SAFE AND DRIVABLE VEHICLE. I WOULD LIKE TO FIND OUT HOW OFTEN THIS TYPE OF STEERING FAILURE HAS OCCURRED ON THIS AND SIMILARLY DESIGNED TOYOTA VEHICLES. I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO KNOW HOW MANY CRASHES, SERIOUS INJURIES OR DEATHS HAVE RESULTED FROM THIS ISSUE. THIS CERTAINLY CAN?T BE THE ONLY OCCURRENCE. I FEEL IT IS IMPERATIVE TO ALERT OWNERS OF THIS VEHICLE AS WELL AS AUTHORIZED REPAIR CENTERS OF THE SITUATION OR ISSUE A RECALL TO ENSURE THAT THE STEERING JOINT BOLT IS SECURE. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2008-11-24
  • VIN: 4T3ZF13C62U
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: EVER SINCE NOVMBER, 2008, MY 2002 TOYOTA SIENNA PASSENGER SIDE POWER DOOR, HAS INTERMITTENTLY FAILED TO OPEN EITHER BY ACTIVATING THE BUTTON ON THE INSIDE OF THE DOOR COLUMN, BY PULLING THE DOOR HANDLE OUTSIDE, OR THE INSTRUMENT PANEL DOOR BUTTON, OR WORSE, AFTER OPENING, WILL NOT CLOSE. THE DEALER HAD TO REINITIALIZE THE ECU IN NOVEMBER, 2008, AND HAVE HAD INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS SINCE. NOW, SINCE AT LEAST DECEMBER, 2012, THE SLIDING DOOR WILL NOT OPEN AT ALL BY ANY OF THE 3 METHODS AND CANNOT BE REINITIALIZED. ALSO, AT TIMES THE MANUAL DRIVERS SIDE PASSENGER DOOR, IN THE PAST ~ 1 1/2 YEARS WILL NOT OPEN EITHER FROM INSIDE DOOR BUTTON RELEASE OR OUTSIDE DOOR HANDLE AND PASSENGERS HAVE TO CLIMB OVER FROM THE FRONT SEATS TO ENTER OR CLIMB OVER THE FRONT SEAT & CONSOLE TO EXIT THE VEHICLE. I HAVE BEEN ADVISED BY MY LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER THAT I NEED TO "START WITH THE REPLACEMENT OF THE ECU," A PART COSTING $730.00 AND ABOUT $1000 WITH INSTILLATION. I HAVE READ OTHER HORROR STORIES THAT REPLACING THE ECU ISN'T NECESSARILY THE ANSWER AND MANY DON'T KNOW WHAT THE ANSWER IS. HAVE THERE BEEN ANY AUTO RECALLS ON THESE POWER DOOR MECHANISMS YET? I SEE A LARGE VOLUME OF THE EXACT SAME COMPLAINTS ON THE INTERNET FOR THESE SIENNA AS WELL AS WITHIN THE NHTSA DATABASE. IN THE EVENT OF AN EMERGENCY EVACUATION OF THE VEHICLES' PASSENGERS, AS IT STANDS, A CATASTROPHE IS WAITING TO HAPPEN. *TR

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2007-04-18
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: EVERY DOOR HANDLE ON THE VEHICLE HAS BROKEN FROM THE INSIDE AND OUTSIDE. ALMOST EVERY TOYOTA SIENNA I SEE ON THE ROAD HAD ATLEAST ONE OF THERE HANDLES BROKEN OFF. I REALLY THINK TOYOTA SHOULD HAVE A RECALL ON THIS. THE DOOR HAS ACTUALLY SWUNG OPEN WHILE I WAS DRIVING BECAUSE I COULD NOT TELL IF IT WAS CLOSED PROPER. IT DID NOT RESULT IN AN ACCIDENT OR MORE DAMAGE BUT COULD VERY EASILY HAVE. *TR

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2002-03-01
  • VIN: 4T3ZF13C52U
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I AM NOT ALONE IN THIS ISSUE. JUST GOOGLE IT. I HAVE HAD AN ISSUE WITH MY ENGINE LIGHT BEING ON CONSISTENTLY SINCE I HAVE BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE, BRAND NEW. I HAVE SPENT HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS, ENDLESS HOURS AND A LOT OF ANXIETY AND FRUSTRATION. WHEN I LIVED IN OHIO, IT WAS NOT A "BIG DEAL" BECAUSE THERE WERE NO EMISSION REQUIREMENTS. WHEN I MOVED TO ARIZONA, IT BECAME A NIGHTMARE. I HAVE HAD SEVERAL SERVICES BY TOYOTA ON THE VAN. I HAVE PAID HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS FOR WHAT THEY TELL ME IS THE PROBLEM AND IT STILL HAS NOT BEEN FIXED. I READ OTHER PEOPLES STORIES ONLINE AND THE SAME "REMEDIES. SUGGESTED BY TOYOTA AND THEIR COMPUTER READOUTS" THAT COST HUNDREDS, SOMETIME THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS AND IT IS STILL NOT FIXED. THE SAFETY ISSUE ARISES, WHEN IS THE ENGINE LIGHT A REAL ISSUE AND WHEN IS IT JUST TOYOTAS MANUFACTURING DEFECT? THERE IS NO WAY TO TELL. I AM CAMPAIGNING AND WILLING TO ORGANIZE A SOCIAL MEDIA RECALL. I AM TIRED AND OUT OF MONEY FOR REPAIRS THAT DO NOT WORK. IT IS TIME FOR TOYOTA TO ADMIT THE ISSUE AND FIX IT. THANK YOU. *TR

TIRES,WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-03-04
  • Components: TIRES,WHEELS
  • Summary: THE SPARE TIRE IS MOUNTED UNDER THE VEHICLE WITH THE SHREDDER VALVE ORIENTED DOWNWARD FOR EASY ACCESS. THE WHEEL IS STEEL AND IS LOCATED SO THE TIRES KICK UP WATER AND ROAD SAND AND, WITH THIS ORIENTATION, WATER IS TRAPPED, LIKE IN A BOWL, AND SITS ON THE STEEL. THE PAINT HAS LONG BEEN BLASTED AWAY FROM THE SAND EXPOSURE AND NOW THE WHEEL IS RUSTED SO BADLY IT IS EXTREMELY THIN AND CANNOT BE USED WITHOUT RISKING FAILURE OF THE WHEEL, ESPECIALLY ON THE FRONT WHERE LOADS CAN REACH IN EXCESS OF 2500 POUNDS IN A DYNAMIC FATIGUE SITUATION. IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE THIS SIENNA HAS BEEN RECALLED ONCE ALREADY FOR RUST IN THIS AREA, THANKS TO YOU GUYS, AS RUST WAS DAMAGING THE RETAINING SYSTEM AND THE TIRE WAS FALLING OFF IN TRAFFIC. THEY HAVE SEEN THE RUSTED WHEELS AND THE STRENGTH IS NOW UNPREDICTABLE. ROAD SALT, RAIN, SAND ETC. AMOUNTS. THE SYSTEM DOES NOT HAVE ANY TYPE OF COVER. DEALER TOLD ME IT WAS NOT A PROBLEM. WE HAVE HAD 2 FLAT TIRES AND I THINK WITH MY WIFE & KIDS IN THE CAR IT IS A PROBLEM. IT IS A PROBLEM WAITING TO HAPPEN. *TR

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2012-07-30
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: I WAS PULLING FORWARD FROM A RED LIGHT, SLOWLY ACCELERATING. SOMEONE CUT ME OFF, I SWERVED, AND THEN ACCELERATED INTO TRAFFIC. THE CAR STARTED ACCELERATING ON ITS OWN, FROM ABOUT 35 MPH (WHERE I PULLED MY FOOT OFF THE ACCELERATOR PAD TO "HOLD" THE SPEED BUT NOT CONTINUE ACCELERATING) UP TO 55 MPH--THIS HAPPENED VERY QUICKLY, IN A SMATTERING OF SECONDS. I REMEMBERED READING THAT YOU SHOULD JUST SLAM ON THE BRAKE AND HOLD IT DOWN HARD, WHICH I DID. THIS DID STOP FURTHER ACCELERATION, BUT IT DID NOT IMMEDIATELY SLOW THE CAR. I WAS ABLE TO SLOW THE CAR IN ABOUT 10 SECONDS, THOUGH DECELERATION WAS VERY SLOW. WHEN I FINALLY RETURNED TO 35 MPH, I DID NOT ATTEMPT TO ACCELERATE AGAIN FOR ABOUT TWO MILES. I STOPPED AT ANOTHER TRAFFIC LIGHT, AND WHEN I STARTED FORWARD FROM THE LIGHT, I DID NOT DEPRESS THE ACCELERATOR PAD WITH MY TYPICAL FORCE, ACCELERATING AT ABOUT HALF THE SPEED I NORMALLY WOULD, AS I DID NOT WANT TO BE TAKEN BY SURPRISE BY THE UNEXPECTED SUDDEN ACCELERATION AGAIN. THE PROBLEM DID NOT FURTHER REPEAT ITSELF THIS EVENING, BUT IT WAS QUITE SCARY WHEN IT HAPPENED. I KNOW IT WAS NOT THE FLOOR MAT UNDER THE PEDAL, AS THE FLOOR MAT HAS BEEN CUT AWAY FROM THE PEDAL AREA AND WAS PULLED VERY FAR BACK INTO THE DRIVER'S SEAT AREA. *TR

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2011-07-18
  • VIN: 5TDBA22C74S
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: ELECTRONIC AUTOMATIC SLIDING DOOR FAILURES. JULY 2011, PASSENGER SIDE (SLIDING DOOR) ELECTRONIC OUTER DOOR HANDLE STOPPED WORKING. THE ONLY WAY TO ENTER OR EXIT THE VEHICLE IS BY PUSHING THE BUTTON ON THE DOOR JAM OR OVERHEAD CONSOLE. THEN THE DOOR STOPPED OPENING COMPLETELY. THE MOTOR TRIES TO OPEN THE DOOR BUT SEEMS LIKE THE DOOR DOES NOT RELEASE. IT WILL NOT OPEN. APRIL 2012, DRIVERS SIDE (SLIDING DOOR) ELECTRONIC OUTER DOOR HANDLE HAS STOPPED WORKING. THE ONLY WAY TO ENTER OR EXIT THE VEHICLE IS BY PUSHING THE BUTTON ON THE DOOR JAM OR OVERHEAD CONSOLE. THE DOOR OPENS 80% OF THE TIME. WHEN IT DOES NOT WORK THE MOTOR TRIES TO OPEN THE DOOR BUT SEEMS LIKE THE DOOR DOES NOT RELEASE. WHEN THE DRIVERS SIDE PASSENGER DOOR DOES NOT OPEN THE FAMILY HAS TO ENTER OR EXIT THROUGH ONE OF THE FRONT DOORS AND CLIMB THROUGH TO THE BACK SEATS. THERE IS NO INTERNAL MANUAL OVERRIDE OF THESE DOORS. THIS IS NOT SAFE. IN AN EMERGENCY MY FAMILY WILL HAVE TO GO THROUGH THE FRONT DOORS OR BREAK AND GO THROUGH THE WINDOWS. THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD. THE OUTSIDE DOOR HANDLES AND SLIDING DOOR MECHANISMS SHOULD BE REPAIRED AT NO CHARGE BY TOYOTA. *JS

Negative 2002 Toyota Sienna car reviews

This van is not the most exciting vehicle out there. The design and driving experience are not particularly noteworthy. However, there are a few issues that I would like to address. Firstly, there is a known issue with the engine not starting if the IAC valve is dirty. Secondly, the rear brakes tend to squeal, but this was covered by warranty and a TSB was issued. Lastly, the turn radius is not great, which can make three-point turns a bit of a hassle. Despite these issues, I am still considering the Honda Odyssey as an alternative option.

We initially chose the Toyota due to its reputation for reliability. However, we have experienced major issues twice in the past two years. The first time, it took three trips to the dealership to identify a cracked fuel tank, which was an unprecedented issue for a new car. Unfortunately, yesterday the van began making grinding and whining noises, and today it wouldn't go into gear and had to be towed to the dealership. We suspect that the transmission is faulty. It's a frustrating situation, and we can't help but think that we should have gone with the Honda instead.

I bought my Sienna brand new in 2001 and unfortunately, it did not live up to my expectations. Despite paying thousands more for its 'legendary' reliability, I found that it contained many biodegradable parts that needed replacement or servicing within 6 weeks of the warranty ending, with only 25000 miles on the vehicle. I was disappointed to find that Toyota was not able to offer any help, and even charged $75 for a dashboard light bulb. I was also told that there was no fix for brake noise in Sienna's, 'they just do that'. I ended up spending nearly $2000 in repairs to fix everything before selling it. However, during the inspection, the dealer told a prospective buyer that the brakes squealed because they were aftermarket, which I found quite amusing.

We have really enjoyed our Sienna XLE, which we purchased after trading in our 2000 LE. While we had originally planned to keep the XLE for 10 years, we have encountered a few issues. One of the biggest problems we have experienced is with the brakes, which have been squeaking loudly. We understand that this has been a known issue with Siennas since 2001, and we would love to hear from others who have experienced the same problem. Unfortunately, Toyota has been unable to offer a solution, and their mechanics have suggested braking harder as a potential fix. Additionally, we have noticed that the paint chips easily and the light-colored carpet shows dirt easily. We have had a few warrantied items replaced, but overall we are still happy with our purchase. It is worth noting that my husband, who is 6'5

I recently purchased the XLE, but unfortunately, it wouldn't start and I had to get a jump. When I got home, I noticed that three warning lights were on. I took it back to the dealership and they informed me that the onboard computer was faulty. Although it took a month for the part to arrive from Japan, the dealership was able to fix the issue. After driving 3000 miles, I took the car to Jiffy Lube for an oil change. The mechanic warned me about potential engine issues due to oil sludge, which is a known problem with Toyota 3.0 V6 engines. I was skeptical at first, but after doing some research online, I found articles from reputable sources like USA Today that confirmed the issue.

Positive 2002 Toyota Sienna car reviews

  1. Matteo Osinski 2024-11-23

The vehicle is incredibly responsive to steering and handling. The variable valve timing addition makes it even more responsive than the 2000 year model. However, the gas mileage could use some improvement. When compared with Chrysler's larger 3.8 liter engine, they get about the same mileage on the highway.

I used to be a hardcore SUV driver until I test drove this used Sienna XLE. I was thrilled with its performance and it zooms better than the Xterra (slug) that I was driving. The Sienna XLE has leather seats, a million cupholders, and sliding doors which I find very convenient. Although I love the sunroof, I wish the dash wouldn't give off such a glare. I also plan to get a DVD player in a bag or the headrests. I managed to get mine for 16,500, which is a great deal considering the bluebook value is 20K.

  3. Milford Senger 2024-11-12

I love this car! The ride is so smooth and the seats are really comfortable and roomy. Even though it's considered a smaller mini-van, I find that it has plenty of space for me. If you have children, there won't be any space issues. The back seats are best for kids, but adults may find the leg room a little tight if the seats are moved in.

  4. Travon Oberbrunner 2024-10-24

I have experienced ride and tire wear issues since the beginning. Despite purchasing a new wheel as suggested by the dealer, the problem persisted. It is my opinion that Toyota Customer Service has not met my expectations. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend purchasing a vehicle from Toyota of Melbourne, FL.

  5. Emilio Renner 2024-09-18

We purchased our Sienna during its first year of introduction and have driven 36,000 miles in 36 months. After 6,000 miles, we noticed some rattling from various parts of the mini-van. Unfortunately, one of the door screws fell off. However, after balancing the tires, all the rattles went away except for the sliding door at 30mph. We believe that the Firestone tires are the cause of this issue. During an emissions test, the mechanic informed us that other owners have also reported similar complaints. We also noticed that the second seat armrest is too weak. When passengers exit the van, they tend to use the armrest as a rail to avoid falling, which tends to loosen it. We suspect that a heavy person could lean on the armrest and break it.
