2023 Toyota Sienna problems

toyota logo

The Toyota Sienna is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Toyota primarily for the North American market. It is named for the Italian city of Siena, in the region of Tuscany. It replaced the first generation Previa van in 1997 with a more conventional front-wheel drive layout and shares a heavily revised platform with the Camry. Both the Previa and original Sienna were smaller than the other minivans they competed against, but a redesign in 2003 (for the 2004 model year) increased the dimensions to match those of its competitors.

It was redesigned again in 2010 (for the 2011 model year). The third generation Sienna went on sale in the United States in February 2010 and is the first Sienna to ever receive a "Top Safety Pick" award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. A 2020 redesign (for the 2021 model year) saw the Sienna becoming a hybrid vehicle for its fourth generation. While previous generations of the Sienna were exported to select Asian and European markets, the fourth generation is the first to be produced outside of the United States as Chinese production commenced in July 2021 by two Toyota joint ventures. In China, it is also marketed as the Toyota Granvia.

Following the discontinuation of General Motors's all-wheel drive minivans in 2006, the Sienna was the only minivan in its class offered with AWD in North America until the 2021 Chrysler Pacifica was introduced with an AWD option in 2020.

The Sienna is not available in Japan and Australia as it is not produced in a right-hand drive configuration, and the segment in these countries is already occupied by the Alphard/Vellfire and the HiAce/Granvia respectively.

As of the fourth generation, introduced in 2020, the Sienna is now built on Toyota's TNGA-K platform, which it shares with most of Toyota’s other large MPVs and crossovers.

Common 2023 Toyota Sienna problems

The 2023 Toyota Sienna, while praised for its hybrid technology and fuel efficiency, has one significant issue that may deter potential buyers. The main problem with the 2023 Toyota Sienna is its long delivery time, with customers facing wait times of 8-12 months. This delay is due to the high demand for the vehicle and the challenges in production and supply chain management.

The long wait time is not the only concern for potential buyers. The Sienna is also considered an overly expensive new model, with plasticky issues that are more commonly found in lower-priced cars. This combination of high cost and perceived lower quality may further discourage potential buyers.

In addition to these issues, the Sienna has faced criticism for its front passenger seat, which cannot be raised up and down, making it less comfortable for long drives.

Another issue that has been reported is the poor quality of the rearview camera, which has been described as very poor and unclear. This can make it difficult for drivers to see what is behind them, potentially compromising safety.

Furthermore, some owners have reported issues with the audio system screen and controls, which have been described as terrible and unintuitive. This can make it difficult for drivers to navigate the vehicle's entertainment and communication features, which can be frustrating and potentially distracting.

The Sienna's a/c and engine have also been criticized for being extremely loud, which can be distracting and uncomfortable for drivers and passengers. This is in contrast to the quiet and smooth operation that is often expected in modern vehicles.

Additionally, some owners have reported issues with the middle air vents, which blow hot air when they should be blowing cold. This can make it difficult for drivers and passengers to maintain a comfortable temperature in the vehicle, particularly during hot weather.

The sliding door has also been reported to have crushed a child when both the child and the driver pushed the button to open it, indicating a potential safety issue.

Finally, the Sienna's trunk seats do not lay flat, which can make it difficult to transport large items or use the space efficiently. This can be particularly frustrating for owners who need to use the vehicle for practical purposes, such as moving furniture or equipment.

In summary, the 2023 Toyota Sienna has several issues that may deter potential buyers, including long delivery times, high cost, plasticky issues, uncomfortable front seats, poor rearview camera quality, unintuitive audio system controls, loud a/c and engine, malfunctioning middle air vents, safety concerns with the sliding door, and inefficient trunk seats. These issues may make it difficult for the Sienna to compete with other vehicles in its class, particularly those that offer more reliable performance, better build quality, and more comfortable seating.

  • Summary: Car lunges forward 10ft or so intermittently when braking is applied. This is very dangerous given situations. Toyota dealer is given new car models under 36k miles a free fix, but they would charge high mileage cars a lot of money. I wish NHTSA demand Toyota provide free fix for this issue.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-05
  • VIN: 5TDZSKFC7PS
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: When braking vehicle feels like it is being bumped from behind. Dealership says it is the vehicle switching from regenerative braking to normal breaking but it causes the car to lunge forward. It feels like the vehicle is going to lunge into oncoming traffic. I have to slam on the brakes to stop it. It’s very unsettling.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-09
  • VIN: 5TDESKFC2PS
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Passenger side sliding door randomly opens even when car is in the locked mode and when parked. It has happened 4 times. Toyota blames my chair lift and the mobility works blames Toyota. Service has not been able to recreate the problem since it is intermittent and has documented the complaint. However the only way to insure it doesn’t happen is to shut off the power to the doors making them difficult to open. This has only happened while parked but is a safety issue when not at home in the garage.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-11
  • VIN: 5TDKRKEC8PS
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: when approaching a red light (or any attempt to slow down) and I press on the brakes, some times the car starts to de-accelerate normally, and then a second or two later, de-acceleration stops for a brief moment. Eventually, the breaking system makes the car stop, but the distance it runs until total stop has definitely been compromised.... plus, the scare factor is concerning. This happens randomly.

  • VIN: 5TDYRKEC1PS

  • Summary: -Car loss power for few seconds turning out from parking lot with an oncoming semi. Could have gotten smash. -Right sliding door randomly not fully closed. Dealer cannot repro neither issues and told me that they are charging $99 diagnose fee next time I bring the car in for the same reason. They did a 1x goodwill diagnose. Absolutely unacceptable for a car that is under warranty with 22k miles on it.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-05
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 5TDKSKFC3PS
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: My husband and I bought a new Toyota Sienna Hybrid in September, 2023. I had a horrific accident on Wednesday, June 5 2024. The Sienna was in our garage and I went back in the house to get my cell phone I forgot. I had started the car, pressed the button to turn off the car but did not put the car in park as I should have. The car ended up going out of the garage and down the driveway- fortunately it hit a cement wall and almost totaled the car. We feel blessed that no one got hurt. I have never had anything like this happen before. I believe if this car was equipped like the gas powered cars we have always had driven this would not have happened. The key fob was around my neck. If I had to remove the key like in our Ford Transit Connect the car would have been in park-the car has to be in park to remove the key. I always take the key to prevent theft and being locked out. You cannot remove the key without the car being in park. I consider this a safety feature. These hybrid/electric cars have just the push button and have eliminated this safety feature. If the Sienna had had some kind of key to remove only when in park this could have avoided such a horrible accident. I had to chase after the Sienna going down the driveway- Fortunately there were no cars going by or people walking by. I consider myself an excellent driver- you can check my record. I know I need to just manually check the gear. With all the new technology there should be a way to assist the driver with avoiding this mishap- they could put in sensors that take the car out of gear if the driver’s seat becomes unoccupied. The same situation happened to our old neighbor about 5 years ago- her electric car rolled out of the garage and took down a brick wall. Please help with getting this matter rectified as more and more drivers are getting hybrid/all electric cars. As you can see we need this safety mechanism on all cars

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-31
  • VIN: 5TDJSKFC8PS
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: My sunroof EXPLODED on 5/31/24 at 1:30 pm. I was driving about 55mph. There was no car in front of me or at my sides, and I was passing a rural grassy area. I did not see anyone or anything. It appears that the glass broke outwards. Fortunately, because it was 85-90 degrees, I had closed the shade about an hour earlier.

  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 5TDYSKFC7PS

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-22
  • VIN: 5TDESKFC9PS
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: When going down hill and needing to brake at a stop sign the brakes feel like they release for a second causing me to move further forward than expected. When I press further on the brake peddle they seem to engage again. Concerning since I'm going into a stop sign at the bottom of hill. The sensation is as if I'm slipping on ice and loosing the ability to brake before they engage again. I have to drive this everyday and has happened several times but not able to replicate it and the dealer has not been able to reproduce it, therefore nothing is wrong according to them. No warning lights appear. The brakes have not been inspected since the dealer feels there is nothing wrong. If I'm ever not able to get the brakes to re-engage then I will run the stop sign and off the embankment on the other side.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-15
  • VIN: 5TDESKFC6PS
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I just read something about a recall affecting certain models of toyota vehicles under "unexpected movement." I have experience similar situation with my toyota sienna 2023 when in drive mode coming to a turn or turning into a driveway, slowly pressing on the brakes, the vehicle continues to unexpectedly move as I'm pressing the brakes, then it responds a few seconds after. It doesnt happen often, but it did happen maybe 5 times or less, ever since I got the car around summer time 2023. Luckily there were no cars in front of me during these few situation, it could've been an accident.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-07
  • VIN: 5TDYRKEC3PS
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: UNKNOWN. Randomly, while lightly braking, the vehicle will lunge forward. Does not always happen and unable to recreate it but has almost caused a few accidents. Van lunges forward for a second or so and then the brakes will re-catch or work again and the vehicle slows again. Scary. Have gone to toyota dealership but they insist nothing is wrong and they haven't heard of this issue. Forums with other Sienna hybrid owners state the same issue. Unsafe. Has happened multiple times, happened twice this last week.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-30
  • VIN: 5TDDSKFC1PS
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: Vehicles equipped with rear entertainment: when tv is folded down, Toyota failed to include a digital mirror to support the ability to see through the rear of the vehicle. When the entertainment system is folded down, the rear view mirror is inaccessible. Many reports are filed online describing the same issue by other owners. Recall should be made to fix the issue and have a digital mirror put in place.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-15
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 5TDDSKFC6PS
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: As I slowly pulled into a parking spot, the car rapidly accelerated (as if I'd floored the accelerator - I didn't), jumping a curb. I slammed on the brakes trying to get it to stop. I ended up running into a parked car before I could get it to stop. I'm worried that it will do it again with someone in front of the car. There's nothing to inspect other than my broken fender from the collision. I don't know what component might have caused this. There were no warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms prior to this occurrence. The car is in good working order. Note: The claim form attached says "No driver", but that is incorrect. I was driving; there was no driver in the other vehicle (a parked car).

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-07
  • VIN: 5TDERKEC2PS
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Our family bought a 2023 new Toyota Sienna [VIN [XXX] ] on July 7, 2023 paying the full price plus premium dealer markup from Elmore Toyota in Westminster, Orange County, California on January 7, 2023 and only received one keyfob for the 7 seater van. I was told that I would get a second keyfob within 2-3 weeks. I have constantly contacted Elmore Toyota and they have said that the keyfob has still not arrived as of December 5th, 2023. As we have three adult drivers using the vans and children who are seated in their car seats in the van, it is imperative that we get our second keyfob as soon as possible. If we were told that we would only get one keyfob and would have to wait over 5 months to get a second keyfob, we would not have bought this vehicle. It is a safety issue as the possibility exists that the single keyfob could be in the car when a child pushes a lock button for the van, there would be no second keyfob to free the trapped children. Please contact me to resolve this risk. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-11
  • VIN: 5TDZSKFC6PS
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: when the rear entertainment system screen is down it mostly obstructs the rear view. It is reckless that toyota doesn't require the digital rear view to ensure driver can see out the back of their vehicle. I do not feel safe in my brand new car, and I don't even have the option to add the digital rear view mirror after the fact. I'm very upset.

Negative 2023 Toyota Sienna car reviews

  1. Arnoldo Feeney 2024-10-15

It's a hybrid which is awesome! However, have you ever wondered why Toyota didn't go further and make it a plug-in like Chrysler did? Even though Toyota has more advanced technology.

  2. Chaim Huel 2024-09-11

The door may be left open without any concern, as the buttons will function properly upon return. Additionally, the second row seats are not removable like those in the Chrysler or Odyssey. However, I have confidence in this vehicle and do not regret my decision to purchase it.

  3. Sam Hermann 2024-03-21

    1. The remote start could use some improvement. It seems to have trouble working even when you're close to the vehicle. 2. I've had some trouble with the GPS. It often takes me on longer routes than necessary. 3. The shifter can be a bit finicky, often shifting the vehicle down to 4 speed. I've found that flipping it over helps keep it in 6 speed. 4. The fuel efficiency varies between 34.5-38 miles per gallon, but overall it's pretty good.

Positive 2023 Toyota Sienna car reviews

  2. Alexzander McKenzie 2024-10-02

Sleek, stylish and beautiful to drive. Toyota Sienna just keeps getting better and better. A hybrid getting mid 30s on mpg. Perfect for long trips. Love it!

  3. Eloy Rolfson 2024-10-01

Great job on several levels of performance! From being economically efficient on gas mileage to having plenty of space for passengers and luggage.

  4. Joel Osinski 2024-09-03

Great car! It has good mileage and is comfortable on long drives.

  5. Doug Lakin 2024-08-18

I used to own a Real Estate Office and I would use my vehicles to drive families around to look at houses. I have owned several vehicles in the past, including a Prius and a Honda Fit which I used to tow behind my motorhome. However, my current 2022 vehicle is the best one yet! It is incredibly comfortable and spacious, and I am able to get an impressive 38 miles per gallon. Additionally, the new safety suite is absolutely awesome! Overall, I believe that this is the best car I have ever owned!
