2023 Toyota Sienna problems

The Toyota Sienna is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Toyota primarily for the North American market. It is named for the Italian city of Siena, in the region of Tuscany. It replaced the first generation Previa van in 1997 with a more conventional front-wheel drive layout and shares a heavily revised platform with the Camry. Both the Previa and original Sienna were smaller than the other minivans they competed against, but a redesign in 2003 (for the 2004 model year) increased the dimensions to match those of its competitors.

It was redesigned again in 2010 (for the 2011 model year). The third generation Sienna went on sale in the United States in February 2010 and is the first Sienna to ever receive a "Top Safety Pick" award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. A 2020 redesign (for the 2021 model year) saw the Sienna becoming a hybrid vehicle for its fourth generation. While previous generations of the Sienna were exported to select Asian and European markets, the fourth generation is the first to be produced outside of the United States as Chinese production commenced in July 2021 by two Toyota joint ventures. In China, it is also marketed as the Toyota Granvia.

Following the discontinuation of General Motors's all-wheel drive minivans in 2006, the Sienna was the only minivan in its class offered with AWD in North America until the 2021 Chrysler Pacifica was introduced with an AWD option in 2020.

The Sienna is not available in Japan and Australia as it is not produced in a right-hand drive configuration, and the segment in these countries is already occupied by the Alphard/Vellfire and the HiAce/Granvia respectively.

As of the fourth generation, introduced in 2020, the Sienna is now built on Toyota's TNGA-K platform, which it shares with most of Toyota’s other large MPVs and crossovers.

Common 2023 Toyota Sienna problems

The 2023 Toyota Sienna, while praised for its hybrid technology and fuel efficiency, has one significant issue that may deter potential buyers. The main problem with the 2023 Toyota Sienna is its long delivery time, with customers facing wait times of 8-12 months. This delay is due to the high demand for the vehicle and the challenges in production and supply chain management.

The long wait time is not the only concern for potential buyers. The Sienna is also considered an overly expensive new model, with plasticky issues that are more commonly found in lower-priced cars. This combination of high cost and perceived lower quality may further discourage potential buyers.

In addition to these issues, the Sienna has faced criticism for its front passenger seat, which cannot be raised up and down, making it less comfortable for long drives.

Another issue that has been reported is the poor quality of the rearview camera, which has been described as very poor and unclear. This can make it difficult for drivers to see what is behind them, potentially compromising safety.

Furthermore, some owners have reported issues with the audio system screen and controls, which have been described as terrible and unintuitive. This can make it difficult for drivers to navigate the vehicle's entertainment and communication features, which can be frustrating and potentially distracting.

The Sienna's a/c and engine have also been criticized for being extremely loud, which can be distracting and uncomfortable for drivers and passengers. This is in contrast to the quiet and smooth operation that is often expected in modern vehicles.

Additionally, some owners have reported issues with the middle air vents, which blow hot air when they should be blowing cold. This can make it difficult for drivers and passengers to maintain a comfortable temperature in the vehicle, particularly during hot weather.

The sliding door has also been reported to have crushed a child when both the child and the driver pushed the button to open it, indicating a potential safety issue.

Finally, the Sienna's trunk seats do not lay flat, which can make it difficult to transport large items or use the space efficiently. This can be particularly frustrating for owners who need to use the vehicle for practical purposes, such as moving furniture or equipment.

In summary, the 2023 Toyota Sienna has several issues that may deter potential buyers, including long delivery times, high cost, plasticky issues, uncomfortable front seats, poor rearview camera quality, unintuitive audio system controls, loud a/c and engine, malfunctioning middle air vents, safety concerns with the sliding door, and inefficient trunk seats. These issues may make it difficult for the Sienna to compete with other vehicles in its class, particularly those that offer more reliable performance, better build quality, and more comfortable seating.

This has only happened while parked but is a safety issue when not at home in the garage.

Eventually, the breaking system makes the car stop, but the distance it runs until total stop has definitely been compromised.... plus, the scare factor is concerning. This happens randomly.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-05
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 5TDKSKFC3PS
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: My husband and I bought a new Toyota Sienna Hybrid in September, 2023. I had a horrific accident on Wednesday, June 5 2024. The Sienna was in our garage and I went back in the house to get my cell phone I forgot. I had started the car, pressed the button to turn off the car but did not put the car in park as I should have. The car ended up going out of the garage and down the driveway- fortunately it hit a cement wall and almost totaled the car. We feel blessed that no one got hurt. I have never had anything like this happen before. I believe if this car was equipped like the gas powered cars we have always had driven this would not have happened. The key fob was around my neck. If I had to remove the key like in our Ford Transit Connect the car would have been in park-the car has to be in park to remove the key. I always take the key to prevent theft and being locked out. You cannot remove the key without the car being in park. I consider this a safety feature. These hybrid/electric cars have just the push button and have eliminated this safety feature. If the Sienna had had some kind of key to remove only when in park this could have avoided such a horrible accident. I had to chase after the Sienna going down the driveway- Fortunately there were no cars going by or people walking by. I consider myself an excellent driver- you can check my record. I know I need to just manually check the gear. With all the new technology there should be a way to assist the driver with avoiding this mishap- they could put in sensors that take the car out of gear if the driver’s seat becomes unoccupied. The same situation happened to our old neighbor about 5 years ago- her electric car rolled out of the garage and took down a brick wall. Please help with getting this matter rectified as more and more drivers are getting hybrid/all electric cars. As you can see we need this safety mechanism on all cars

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-22
  • VIN: 5TDESKFC9PS
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: When going down hill and needing to brake at a stop sign the brakes feel like they release for a second causing me to move further forward than expected. When I press further on the brake peddle they seem to engage again. Concerning since I'm going into a stop sign at the bottom of hill. The sensation is as if I'm slipping on ice and loosing the ability to brake before they engage again. I have to drive this everyday and has happened several times but not able to replicate it and the dealer has not been able to reproduce it, therefore nothing is wrong according to them. No warning lights appear. The brakes have not been inspected since the dealer feels there is nothing wrong. If I'm ever not able to get the brakes to re-engage then I will run the stop sign and off the embankment on the other side.

I have experience similar situation with my toyota sienna 2023 when in drive mode coming to a turn or turning into a driveway, slowly pressing on the brakes, the vehicle continues to unexpectedly move as I'm pressing the brakes, then it responds a few seconds after. It doesnt happen often, but it did happen maybe 5 times or less, ever since I got the car around summer time 2023. SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-07
  • VIN: 5TDYRKEC3PS
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: UNKNOWN. Randomly, while lightly braking, the vehicle will lunge forward. Does not always happen and unable to recreate it but has almost caused a few accidents. Van lunges forward for a second or so and then the brakes will re-catch or work again and the vehicle slows again. Scary. Have gone to toyota dealership but they insist nothing is wrong and they haven't heard of this issue. Forums with other Sienna hybrid owners state the same issue. Unsafe. Has happened multiple times, happened twice this last week.

  • VIN: 5TDDSKFC1PS
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: Vehicles equipped with rear entertainment: when tv is folded down, Toyota failed to include a digital mirror to support the ability to see through the rear of the vehicle. When the entertainment system is folded down, the rear view mirror is inaccessible. Many reports are filed online describing the same issue by other owners. Recall should be made to fix the issue and have a digital mirror put in place.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-15
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 5TDDSKFC6PS
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: As I slowly pulled into a parking spot, the car rapidly accelerated (as if I'd floored the accelerator - I didn't), jumping a curb. I slammed on the brakes trying to get it to stop. I ended up running into a parked car before I could get it to stop. I'm worried that it will do it again with someone in front of the car. There's nothing to inspect other than my broken fender from the collision. I don't know what component might have caused this. There were no warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms prior to this occurrence. The car is in good working order. Note: The claim form attached says "No driver", but that is incorrect. I was driving; there was no driver in the other vehicle (a parked car).

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-07
  • VIN: 5TDERKEC2PS
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Our family bought a 2023 new Toyota Sienna [VIN [XXX] ] on July 7, 2023 paying the full price plus premium dealer markup from Elmore Toyota in Westminster, Orange County, California on January 7, 2023 and only received one keyfob for the 7 seater van. I was told that I would get a second keyfob within 2-3 weeks. I have constantly contacted Elmore Toyota and they have said that the keyfob has still not arrived as of December 5th, 2023. As we have three adult drivers using the vans and children who are seated in their car seats in the van, it is imperative that we get our second keyfob as soon as possible. If we were told that we would only get one keyfob and would have to wait over 5 months to get a second keyfob, we would not have bought this vehicle. It is a safety issue as the possibility exists that the single keyfob could be in the car when a child pushes a lock button for the van, there would be no second keyfob to free the trapped children. Please contact me to resolve this risk. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

  • Summary: when the rear entertainment system screen is down it mostly obstructs the rear view. It is reckless that toyota doesn't require the digital rear view to ensure driver can see out the back of their vehicle. Negative 2023 Toyota Sienna car reviews

  1. Bradford Labadie 2025-09-06

I have owned three Siennas over the past 20 years and was excited to finally see a hybrid model. While I appreciate the increased gas mileage and the well-designed driver's cockpit, I do miss the power of the 6-cylinder engine in my previous models. The acceleration is not up to par, which can be concerning when merging onto highways with short entrance ramps. Additionally, the turning radius is not as tight as it was in previous models. The second-row seats are also a disappointment as they are not removable and the optional 8th seat is no longer stowable in the minivan. However, the safety features and tech/CarPlay work well after some initial figuring out. Overall, the biggest issue I have with the new Sienna is the design of the driver's seat, which is not suitable for someone of my height (5'9Toyota is a company that knows how to design comfortable driver's seats, as evidenced by the 2007 Highlander owned by our family. However, the driver's seat in my previous Siennas was not up to par, which is disappointing. As a parent of four kids who spends a lot of time in the driver's seat, I find the discomfort and annoyance to be a deal-breaker when considering purchasing another Sienna. It is imperative that Toyota redesigns the seat to accommodate a variety of heights and sizes, and I am confident that they have the capability to do so.

  2. Nat Runolfsdottir 2025-08-08

I was on the waiting list for a new Sienna to replace my 2008 Odyssey. I wanted a van with ample space and the fuel efficiency of a hybrid. I didn't want to pay more for less space and get a hybrid SUV. However, when I finally had a chance to test drive a Sienna, I was disappointed. Compared to my old Odyssey, it felt cramped inside and definitely not as roomy. I wouldn't want to take a road trip in it. I didn't think road noise would be an issue, but it was very noticeable on the highway, to the point of being aggravating. Additionally, there was a noticeable vibration that bothered my wife and daughter. Even the empty third row seats vibrated. After a 25-minute test drive, it was a relief to get out of the vehicle and stand on solid ground. All these issues were even more apparent when we got back in our 08 Odyssey and drove away. It was smooth, quiet, roomy, and relaxing. Needless to say, I promptly removed my name from the waiting list and bought a Honda. Although I'm giving up some MPG, it is well worth it. Compared to my 08 Odyssey, the new vehicle is smoother, quieter, and more comfortable, just as you would expect a new vehicle to be.

  3. Madyson Abshire 2025-07-06

The car has experienced several issues since purchase, including dashboard lights indicating sensor unavailability and the need for frequent jumping. Despite Toyota's initial explanation that the sensors were sensitive due to a dirty undercarriage, they were eventually replaced. However, the problem persisted and the car could not be driven for more than 10 minutes in anything other than pristine weather. While in the shop, the dealership was unable to assist with syncing the app to the owner's phone or showing them how to work the TV. Despite being in the shop for 13 days, the issue remains unresolved and Toyota has yet to provide a solution. While this has been a frustrating experience, we remain confident that Toyota will eventually find a resolution to the issue at hand.

  4. Bryce Gerlach 2025-05-21

I really appreciate the great MPG we get from this car, even without trying to drive it like a hybrid! However, I did have a few issues with the build quality and the front seats. For example, the carpet on the passenger side under the front center dash came loose from the plastic trim, and even though the dealer tried to fix it, it came out again. It's a bit disappointing and makes me feel like I'm driving an older car. Additionally, the weather stripping around the back hatch wasn't installed correctly and came out easily. The dealer replaced it, so hopefully it's fixed now. The front passenger seat doesn't have the option to be raised up and down, which can make it feel like sitting in the third row. The driver's seat does have this option, but overall, the seats aren't very comfortable for long drives. Based on my experience, I wouldn't recommend this car.

  5. Jay Heaney 2025-03-28

I recently purchased a 2022 Sienna after wanting one for several months. However, I have been disappointed with my purchase. In comparison to my previous 2013 Venza, the Sienna lacks some of the features I enjoyed. Additionally, I have experienced some issues with the rear view camera, audio system screen and controls, and the loudness of the a/c and engine. The middle air vents also blow hot air when they should be blowing cold. Unfortunately, I also had a scary incident with the sliding door crushing my child's leg. I would advise anyone considering purchasing a Sienna to check out a community chat site to learn more about the vehicle before making a decision. Looking back, I wish I had done so myself.

Positive 2023 Toyota Sienna car reviews

  1. Wiley Rowe 2025-09-01

I waited a few thousand miles before writing this review. I must say, I absolutely love the 2023 Toyota Sienna Woodland Edition and would no longer consider any of the alternatives. Having driven a 2001 Odyssey for 21 years and a used 2007 Odyssey for a couple of years during COVID, I can confidently say that the Sienna is a game-changer. Here's what I found: The ride feels like a car, not a truck or big SUV, which is similar to my Odysseys. I don't notice any difference in road noise compared to my previous vehicles. The acceleration is definitely better than my 210 hp 2001 Odyssey and about the same as my 240 hp 2007 Odyssey. I am sure it is less than a modern 280 hp minivan, but I just don't have the need. If I can go 60 to 75 in a second or two with five adults and packed storage, I just don't need much more. It is actually faster off the line than either of my Hondas, I guess due to the electric motors. The braking has a different feel at first than pure disk brakes, so you do have to get used to it. It will never be quite as smooth as pure disks coming to a full stop, but it is fine now. The hybrid system is much smoother than pure gas in stop and go traffic. Much less lurching (despite the brakes, it starts more smoothly and transitions from accelerating to stopping more smoothly). I find it much more restful than my other minivans there. I am getting 37 mph consistently and confirmed with external maps and gas measurements. I leave it in Eco mode because we prefer the air conditioning to be a little muted (a side effect of Eco mode). For fast acceleration, you just step harder on the gas pedal. I will never make back the cost of buying this minivan in gas savings, so that's not the benefit to me. But range is huge. I went 608 miles recently with 1.5 gallons left in the tank. It changes how I drive. I don't live near a gas station, so I was always figuring where and when to buy gas. Overall, I highly recommend the 2023 Toyota Sienna Woodland Edition to anyone in the market for a new minivan. It's a fantastic vehicle that has exceeded my expectations.I love driving my Sienna! It's so convenient to be able to go off-road without worrying about carrying extra gas. Plus, the mileage is consistent no matter where I'm driving. I've found that keeping my tires fully inflated really helps with fuel efficiency. The all-wheel drive is amazing - I was able to easily back up a steep, wet hill without any slipping. The seats are really comfortable, especially with the adjustable lumbar support. I haul a lot of stuff, so the extra storage space is a huge plus. The safety features are great too - the radar and automated steering make me feel more relaxed and alert while driving. The tires are also a noticeable improvement over my old van. The only thing I would change is the central console between the front seats - I'd prefer more empty space. Overall, I'm really happy with my Sienna!Getting out of the seat to the back can be a bit of a challenge, and it would be great to have more room down the center aisle for longer items. Regarding the spare tire, I received mine without one due to supply chain issues, but I plan on getting a full diameter spare from Modern Spare for its longer range and better jack and wrench. However, moving the spare around each time I need to raise or lower the third row can be a bit of a hassle, so I recommend waiting for a spare if they are still coming without them. The sound system and electronics are a significant improvement from my old vans, and the Toyota-supplied navigation is a nice feature when my phone can't get a signal. The suspension on the Woodland is rated at almost 7 inches, which is not far from many 8-inch SUVs, but it's important to note that it's not an SUV. The whole bottom of the car sits at about 7 inches, which is less than an SUV that may have some piece sticking down 8 inches from the ground. However, my trailer hitch bottoms out much less than the one on my old 2001 Odyssey. Overall, the long range, all-wheel drive, extra storage, better ride, and safety features make this van a great choice for me. It also has a little extra ground clearance than other vans, which is a bonus.

The fuel economy of this car is truly impressive, averaging about 37.6 over 1000 miles. The power is adequate and even performs well on mountain grades with a full load. The car rides smoothly and quietly at highway speeds, with good visibility. The third row is easy to fold and there is plenty of passenger space. Although the cargo space is slightly less than class leaders, it is still ample. However, the engine can be quite loud and unrefined under moderate and hard acceleration, which is a downside. In comparison, our Honda Hybrid is much more refined. The backup camera has a low resolution and the levers to access the third row can be difficult for kids to use. Honda does it better with their push button system. It would be great if the car had wireless CarPlay. Overall, this car is incredibly practical and has excellent gas mileage, but the noisy and gritty powertrain can be a drawback, especially on steep hills. Hopefully, Toyota will improve the refinement and infotainment in the next update. If they do, it will be a perfect car, especially if they offer 8 seats in top trims.

March 2022 - We've been searching for a 2022 'Red' Sienna in Central Florida for a few months now, but they're in very limited supply! Finally, we found one, but had to pay almost 10% over the Suggested Manufacturers Price. On the bright side, we sold our 2010 Sienna for almost $8,000 more than the dealers offer. We're thrilled with the 2022 Sienna and all of its current safety features. Although the horsepower is less than the 2010, the performance of the 2022 is fine and not noticeably less. It does feel larger, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. The only downside we've noticed is the storage. The opening between the seats is nice, but too open. We placed a plastic box there to store 'stuff' that previously was in one of the three glove boxes (two in front of the passenger and one below the passenger seat) in our old 2010 Sienna. In addition, the little hiding places next to the third row of seats are gone. So far, we're getting around 34 mpg driving around town. Overall, we really like the new 2022 XLE. After a month of ownership, we still like the 2022 Sienna. We have noticed that it doesn't have a compass, and the heating and cooling controls are a bit difficult to control while driving, but we'll probably get used to that. While our 2010 drove like a car, the 2022 drives more like a large SUV. We're getting used to the large car feel, and currently, our best mpg was just over 40. We're still happy with the Sienna; it just takes a little time to get used to all the 'bells and whistles' and controls in the vehicle. Now, after a year, we're comfortable with the controls, but still miss the compass. We did have one major issue with the car, but after discussing the problem with Toyota and two weeks of waiting for a repair and $3,000 of warranty work, all is well. The bottom line is that we're happy with the purchase and plan to own the car for a long time. After 18 months of ownership, I'm happy to report that everything is going well. We really enjoy driving the minivan and we've had no issues so far. It was definitely a good purchase and we plan on enjoying it for many years to come!

Spacious, sleek, and with a nice body and coloring scheme. The seats are amazing and the attention to detail is impressive. I'm so glad we got the xse - it's been a great addition for our family!

Congratulations on your new Toyota Sienna XLE! It sounds like you made a great choice in selecting a minivan that meets your needs. With its impressive fuel mileage, towing capacity, and spacious interior, it's perfect for camping, vacations, shopping, and music gigs. We're glad to hear that you find the Sienna a pleasure to drive, with nice handling and neutral steering. Additionally, the high-quality assembly and powerful brakes make it a reliable choice. While the Sienna may be a bit larger and more complex than some cars, we're confident that you'll enjoy learning about all of its features. Thank you for choosing a Toyota Certified Used Car, which offers better warranties than a new car and represents a great value. We hope you continue to enjoy your Sienna for years to come! The front seats could be a little better, but we threw a cushioned seat pad into our driver seat, just as we’ve had to do with other cars, and all’s well. We’ll try the same with the passenger seat. This may not be the most aesthetically pleasing car we’ve ever owned, but we know that styling is a matter of opinion, and this isn’t the first time we’ve owned quirky-looking Toyotas. In fact, we had two Tercel wagons in the ‘80s. The Sienna looks better in darker colors that hide its unique design. We’ve even given our gargantuan white Sienna a nickname, “Moby” – the white whale. We’ve installed a Class 3 hitch receiver and electric brake controller, and we’re confident that the Sienna will handle everything well. If needed, we’ll add weight-distributing towing tech. We won’t be in a hurry, and we don’t mind if the Sienna is a little slower than other vans to 60 MPH. It’s plenty fast for highway merging and passing. The 4-cylinder engine sound doesn’t bother us at all. In fact, we find it to be a pretty nice sound. We’re more than happy to trade a little engine noise and acceleration now and then for 36 MPG in a minivan. We think the Sienna hybrid is a fine vehicle, built to typical Toyota quality standards. We’re already very fond of ours, and we’ll be sure to check back here after we’ve had it for a while.
