The Toyota Sienna is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Toyota primarily for the North American market. It is named for the Italian city of Siena, in the region of Tuscany. It replaced the first generation Previa van in 1997 with a more conventional front-wheel drive layout and shares a heavily revised platform with the Camry. Both the Previa and original Sienna were smaller than the other minivans they competed against, but a redesign in 2003 (for the 2004 model year) increased the dimensions to match those of its competitors.

It was redesigned again in 2010 (for the 2011 model year). The third generation Sienna went on sale in the United States in February 2010 and is the first Sienna to ever receive a "Top Safety Pick" award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. A 2020 redesign (for the 2021 model year) saw the Sienna becoming a hybrid vehicle for its fourth generation. While previous generations of the Sienna were exported to select Asian and European markets, the fourth generation is the first to be produced outside of the United States as Chinese production commenced in July 2021 by two Toyota joint ventures. In China, it is also marketed as the Toyota Granvia.

Following the discontinuation of General Motors's all-wheel drive minivans in 2006, the Sienna was the only minivan in its class offered with AWD in North America until the 2021 Chrysler Pacifica was introduced with an AWD option in 2020.

The Sienna is not available in Japan and Australia as it is not produced in a right-hand drive configuration, and the segment in these countries is already occupied by the Alphard/Vellfire and the HiAce/Granvia respectively.

As of the fourth generation, introduced in 2020, the Sienna is now built on Toyota's TNGA-K platform, which it shares with most of Toyota’s other large MPVs and crossovers.

Common 2015 Toyota Sienna problems

The 2015 Toyota Sienna is a highly-rated minivan with a smooth suspension and high owner satisfaction scores. However, there are some common problems that have been reported by owners of this vehicle.

One of the most common issues is the brake pedal pulsing, which has been reported by some owners around 25,000 miles.

Another issue that has been reported by some owners is the cruise control lights flashing on the dash.

Excessive wind noise is another issue that has been reported by some owners around 50,000 miles.

There are 6 recalls on the Sienna, which is similar to other minivans from 2015. The most serious recall is for the sliding door, which may open while driving. Toyota will replace the wiring harness on affected models to fix the sliding door motors.

  • VIN: 5TDDK3DC2FS

Started to happen after 95,000 miles. The AWD is shut off and goes to 2 wheel drive, traction control is turned off, Check Engine light comes on and Message Check AWD system comes up on the screen. Any recommendations

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-15
  • VIN: 5TDYK3DC0FS
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: This vehicle is a tire eater. It does not matter what the brand of tire it is- Michelin, Bridgestone, or Yokohama, tires last, at best, 18 months of local soccer mom driving. After five sets of 50K mile, or better rated tires, at $800 to $1200 hundred per set, I think it is time that Toyota owns up to the fact that something is wrong with this model (4x2) vehicle. In my mind thjis is similar to the Toyota airbag situation only on a smaller scale. The manufacturer always has an out, such as, did the customer have the vehicle aligned, have the tire pressure checked, rotate tire on schedule, was it driven off road? My concern is that just about any driver would expect to get 30 to 40 thousand miles of normal driving from a set of premium tires. If the tires wear abnormally quickly while expecting "normal" tire mileage, this puts the driver in danger due to unexpected tire failure and possible tire related accident. This needs some data analysis.

  • Summary: The intake valve became burnt/stuck, causing my car to lose all compression on cylinder 3. The CEL came on, flashing, and the car immediately started driving rough and not accelerating. I had the vehicle brought to 2 different auto shops that confirmed the issue. My and my childrens' safety were at risk as soon as we tried to turn right onto a high speed road and my car started the flashing CEL and would not accelerate. There was no warning before this incident.

Chest Clip, Buckle, Harness PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-24
  • VIN: 5TDKK3DC4FS

  • Summary: I bought this carseat in March and began using it August 2nd for my infant who was born July 31st. The straps have slowly become an issue. We try so hard to tighten the straps but to no avail. This puts my child at risk if we were to get in accident as he is not secure and the straps are still loose. I did reach out to graco who informed me I had to do a warranty claim. I am not sure yet if thet plan to do anything in regaurds to this issue.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-15
  • VIN: 5TDYK3DC8FS
  • Components: STRUCTURE

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-03
  • VIN: 5TDYK3DC3FS
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: All interior dome/lights (door side lights, visor mirror lights, all overhead passenger lights, etc) not lighting up at all. Fuse in engine compartment is good. Vehicle has been at auto dealership where originally purchased. Safety concerns are that at night, unable to determine if there has been access by person or if person is actually in vehicle. Vehicle diagnoses was begun on 6/12/2023 and is still in process of issues. Received a call from the service representative on 6/19/2023 that water had accumulated under the fuse box in the engine compartment causing corrosion at the connection of the wire harness to the underside of the fuse box. Initially this caused the the internal lights to fail. There is much more corrosion occurring which will eventually cause a complete electrical failure and possible engine failure/fire. Current recommendation from service manager is to completely replace the wire harness at a cost of $7,000+. Insurance may or may not cover the cost of repair. The insurance adjuster is meeting today with the service manager. In my opinion, this is a serious defect in Toyota Sienna manufacturing, design and materials used.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-05-04
  • VIN: 5TDYK3DC8FS
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Door to gas tank fill breaking off. Very common problem noted online by several owners of this vehicle. If it does not close properly the engine will not start. As it begins to break at the hinge the door sticks out. I fear it will fall off one day. Dealer acknowledges this is a problem and knows there is no recall for it. I have seen other exact vans that the door has been removed completely.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-02-08
  • VIN: 5TDDK3DC0FS
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Due to poor design, air system intakes (eg under front seats) and outlets have not been protected by grilles, allowing intrusion of rodents into air system blower motor and heat box. I had rodent feces in my air filter system and blower motor and dead rodents in my heat box in Oct 2022 and has recurred in Feb 2023. Rodent intrusion in air system presents serious risk of respiratory illness to humans. Rodent infestation in vehicle can also cause startling to driver which presents an additional safety risk. Air system access should be protected by grilles at all inlet and outlet points.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-01-05
  • VIN: 5TDKK3DC1FS
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: My vehicle had been repaired for the recall involving the power sliding doors. The entire cable assembly was replaced. That repair has now failed and the sliding door is inoperable. The cable snapped and the driver side door will not open. I am afraid that it may open while driving, which caused the recall in the first place. I don't want to drive the vehicle for fear of the other sliding door failing as well. These repairs should last much longer than 5 years, especially something as important as the sliding door, where all the children sit. What a huge safety issue for what is supposed to be a vehicle for hauling children around. Luckily the incident happened in a parking lot.

  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: On a warm day after driving the van about 15 minutes then stop for 15 minutes or more. It is taking longer than usual to crank the van. I have search around online. People on "SiennaChat - https://www.siennachat.com/threads/engine-starts-great-cold-or-hot-long-crank-when-warm.59549/page-2 " website is talking about it. My concern is that one day it could stall while driving on the highway. Since, it is fuel related issues. Without fuel supply engine will halt.

  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 5TDXK3DC7FS
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: We got into an accident today, and none of the sliding doors would not slide open. It would not even allow us to pull the doors opens. The vehicles electrical was damaged, but that should not prevent the other doors from opening. This is a very bad situation if someone is needing to evacuate the vehicle. The rear passengers would be trapped. Please address this issue with Toyota asap. People who usually have Vans have big families and small children. This would be a very bad situation if vehicle needed to be evacuated asap. The rear passengers would be stuck.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-07-22
  • VIN: 5tdkk3dc1fs
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: I was at a stop light when I slowly started to lift my foot from the brake pedal. The engine started revving up and accelerate. I pressed the brake pedal normal , then harder when it would not stop revving. I looked down to see if I was hitting the gas pedal by accident. I was not, about after 5 seconds it stop revving. I went about a foot and nobody was in front of me. I going to have it checked out by my dealer. This happened before and I thought it was driver error .When I thought I was hitting the gas pedal and brake pedal. I searched for incidents like mine, but could not find something exactly just similar. I did not look at the dashboard so i do not know if there was a message . So I'm reporting this incident to get answers and alert others of this issue.

  • VIN: 5TDXK3DC1FS
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: We recently had two Dunlop P 235 / 50 R 19 tires fail on our car. On 11/5/21, the front passenger-side tire tread and belt began to unravel while driving at freeway speed. This happened suddenly, with no warning lights, and we became aware of the problem when we heard a loud thumping noise from the unraveled tire striking the underside of the vehicle. We immediately exited the freeway, found a tire shop, and had the tire replaced. The following week, I inspected the other tires and found that the front drive-side tire was failing in exactly the same way. We immediately had that one replaced too. Neither tire shop that replaced the tires could identify a cause of the tire failures other than possible defects in the tires.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • VIN: 5TDYK3DCXFS
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: The vehicle rear sliding door had a recall. I had the recall preformed at Smithtown Toyota. After the correction was done. I continue to have same issues with the drivers side rear sliding door. Where it will not open when pushing the open button on my controls in the front. Or when my child 12 years old attempts to manually open the door. As this does not happen all the times. The dealer says they can not replicate the problem and it is working to manufacture standards. I spoke with Toyota corporate and they are aware of continued problems with the sliding rear doors. the have a customer support group, but I would have to pay for the dealer to inspect the vehicle. I have extended warranty so they said I wouldn't then have to pay. However every time you take it in with a problem they can never replicate the problem. They are not the only dealer with this response. It must be a set line throughout all brands as its always that answer until your warranty expires. When it expires then all of a sudden they can find all problems and fix everything.

Negative 2015 Toyota Sienna car reviews

  1. Jeremie Kshlerin 2025-02-06

As a long-time Toyota owner and enthusiast, I was disappointed with my experience with the 2015 Sienna SE and the service I received from multiple dealers. Unfortunately, a safety recall required me to disconnect the automatic sliding doors due to a problem with them opening while the vehicle was underway. Although it took nearly a year to fix, once corrected, the doors opened noticeably slower than when the car was purchased. Additionally, the car required a full set of brakes at only 14,000 miles, which was surprising to me. When I asked about this, I was told that it was pretty normal for a vehicle with a lot of weight in the front. Unfortunately, at 30,000 miles, I needed another complete brake job, and the dealer did not attempt to discover why this could be happening. Despite my disappointment, I understand that every car has its issues, and I am grateful for the time I spent with my Sienna. I spoke with service managers at two different dealerships, and although Toyota was unable to find the root of the problem, I appreciate their efforts to help. While I may consider other options in the future, I will always have a soft spot for Toyota and the many great cars they produce.

At approximately 18,000 miles, both struts required replacement. Despite the expiration of the 3-year warranty, the issue was resolved with confidence. The combined city/highway gas mileage was less than 18 MPG, which could be improved. Despite the dealership's efforts, some rattling noise persisted. The front passenger seat developed a crack in the plastic base, which could be addressed with improved material quality.

We purchased a new 2015 Sienna during the summer of that year. Although the vehicle is spacious inside, it can be difficult to see out of and has some significant blind spots. Unfortunately, the car no longer comes with regular tires, and the run-flat tires that come as standard equipment are of low quality. We only managed to get 20K miles out of ours, and replacements cost twice as much as a decent conventional tire. It's worth noting that run-flat tires are unnecessary since if you end up having a problem, you won't be able to pop on a spare and continue your trip. You have 50 miles to get to a tire shop or dealer to get a new, overpriced tire. While the car is still under warranty, the TPS sensors are starting to break. Toyota's policy is to ask customers to commit to paying a fee to determine if the sensors are covered under the warranty. It's a shame that you have to pay to use the warranty in the first place. Neither Toyota nor the dealer that sold me the car will put this policy in writing, they just refuse to do the work unless you agree. In this day and age, there are better options available. I would advise you to be cautious and learn from my experience. As requested by Edmunds, I would like to update that the minivan continues to have problems. Most recently, there was a door recall that the dealer required to be done during the week, which was an all-day fix. For those who work, being unwilling to do recall repairs during their scheduled weekend hours shows the lack of customer service I've come to expect.

The Toyota Sienna SE 2015 has had some issues with levers, brakes, and tires, despite having less than 14,000 miles on it. However, I still appreciate the vehicle. Unfortunately, Toyota Care did not meet my expectations, as they failed to rotate the tires during the initial service checks, which led to alignment issues and tire damage. Despite these challenges, I remain confident in my decision to purchase a Toyota and look forward to exploring other models in the future.

I have now driven this car for 92k miles and there are a few things that I don't like about it. Firstly, the Nav system is not very reliable. The voice prompts do not work at all, the system keeps turning itself off (started at about 5k) and the Bluetooth quality is not very good. Additionally, the USB port will not keep my phone charged if I'm using GPS on long trips (I have an iPhone XS). Secondly, the quality of the plastic interior is not very good. Some things break easily (buttons/handles etc.) even though I am not rough on my vehicles. Thirdly, the car goes through tires very quickly. Even though it is aligned and balanced, a 45k tire will only last for about 25k and the run flats are expensive. Lastly, the gas mileage is much lower than advertised. However, there are some good things about the car too. Firstly, it rides smoothly. Secondly, it has an awesome turning radius. Lastly, it has great room for kids.

This vehicle has good power and handling, and offers a lot of interior space. I appreciate that Toyota's regular maintenance list is small, with oil changes only required every 10k miles. The powertrain is relatively standard, which I hope translates to high reliability, and so far it has. However, there have been a few issues: the center console latch broke, but was fixed under warranty; the brake rotors were also replaced under warranty; and there are some minor paint flakes missing on the front and rear bumper areas. Additionally, the alarm light flashes when parked, even if not locked, which the dealership said is normal, but I don't think it occurred when new. In terms of design, I do wish the van was not so large, as it is not very 'mini' at all. The size of the Ford Transit Connect would be preferable for me. The gas mileage is poor, but this obviously partly correlates to the 'standard' powertrain I like, and to the size of the vehicle. It is inline with the EPA ratings, so no surprise, but I do wish it was better. The 2nd row is terrible, unfortunately. The 8 seater's 2nd row middle seat is ridiculously narrow and short, and the seat bottom is lower than the adjacent seats. Also, there are no LATCH attachments for the middle seat, making it almost useless. Finally, when you remove the 2nd row seats, there are runners in the tracks that remain, making it a non-flat load floor and the runners could get damaged when hauling items. This is just an absolutely terrible design by Toyota for the 2nd row. The Honda does a much better job in this regard. The 3rd row only has 2 sets of LATCH anchors, and one of them is in the middle of the wider section of the 60/40 split seat, so you could not have two passengers in that section if you use the LATCH. Again, the Honda gets this right. Lastly, it is worth noting that this vehicle does not come with a full size spare tire.

We loved our 2015 Toyota Sienna LE and drove it for almost 200,000 miles. The only issue we had was with the tires wearing out too quickly, even with normal use. We followed all the recommended maintenance, including rotating and balancing the tires and trying different brands, but still had to replace them every 40,000 miles. We were informed by the Costco tire department that there was a known problem with 2004-05 Siennas. When it was time for a new vehicle, we were torn between the Odyssey and Sienna. Ultimately, we chose the Sienna because we had a great local dealer, and we assumed they would have resolved the tire issue over the course of 10 years. Unfortunately, this was not the case. We recently had to replace all four tires on our new Sienna, which only had 26,000 miles on it, due to excessive wear on the outer ring of the tire, making them legally bald. Although the middle and inner parts of the tire had normal wear, we were told to have the alignment checked. The alignment was fine, but we were advised to replace the camber bolt at a cost of $280, which was not covered under warranty. We have decided to switch to a Honda Odyssey when our lease is up in a year.

Congratulations on your new minivan! It's always exciting to try something new, especially when it comes to accommodating a growing family. I understand that you've had some trouble with Honda V-6 engines in the past, but it sounds like you've found a great alternative in the Sienna. I'm glad to hear that your family is enjoying the ride and that the van has good pickup and is well-built. The electronics are easy to use and the A/C is a huge plus, especially in the humid South. While the rear TV is a great feature, you can also save some money by using iPads. Overall, it sounds like you made a great choice with the Sienna. Enjoy your new ride!

I was looking for a Sienna with black interior, as I have three young children and things tend to get dirty quickly. Additionally, I was interested in an OEM DVD player, as I prefer it over aftermarket ones. With the OEM player, you can load the DVDs up front, giving you more control, rather than having to load them directly onto the unit. The Sienna SE edition handles beautifully and makes you feel like you're in a sports car. The steering is very responsive and feels solid. I recently switched from a 2007 Honda Odyssey E-XL, which felt very soft and dangerous at higher speeds on the freeway. The Sienna's second-row seats have more room to move than the Odyssey's, which is great when carrying taller adults. The jumper seat in the back is also easy to store. The dashboard on the 2015 model is better looking than the previous models, and the SE comes with leather (although it may not be real leather) on the dashboard. The DVD screen is wide, allowing you to see two separate movies or stretch it out for a bigger picture. The black leather seats with contrasting stitching on the SE model feel luxurious and make you forget that you're in a minivan. The technology that allows you to speak softly and still be heard by passengers in the third row is fantastic. No more screaming to the kids in the back! This is also the first car I've had with navigation, which is nice not having to rely on my phone for directions. The Bluetooth phone connectivity works very well, allowing you to answer and make calls hands-free with voice commands. However, there are a few downsides. You will need to take it to the dealer to get aligned, as this van was having a slight pull. After they realigned it, it now pulls to the left. Additionally, the leather seats are not real leather, although they do look nice. The car emits a strong odor due to the amount of glues, plastics, and vinyl used in its construction. This can cause nausea and headaches, which can be alleviated by leaving charcoal and vinegar in pots overnight or using air fresheners. The mats on the second row extend all the way to the third row, which can make them difficult to remove for cleaning. Additionally, debris can accumulate in the open channels of the rails where the second row seats move. Accessing the third row can also be challenging, but removing the jumper seat can make it easier. The cover for the left side mirror fell off while the car was parked, which could have been worse if the car was in motion. The design of the third row seats folding into the well is not visually appealing, and it can be difficult to find the play button on the DVD player due to its flat surface. The center storage console between the front seats has good storage, but there is limited space for second-row passengers to store items. The dashboard has many electronic features that may take some time to get used to and could be a distraction for the driver. The visibility to the rear from the driver's side is quite restricted due to the large headrests of the 3rd row seats. Unfortunately, they cannot be brought down to improve visibility. This can be uncomfortable for young children. Additionally, the DVD player screen is quite big and can also block your view. Another downside is the lack of storage pockets in the rear trunk areas for items such as jumper cables and first aid kits. However, the Sienna still has many great features that I like and plan to enjoy for many years.

After reading reviews from other owners, I found myself in the middle of the pack in terms of mileage on the road. At 25k miles, I have only had a battery replaced via warranty from Toyota. I am happy to report that my tires are still in great condition (I have the Goodyear stock tires from the factory) even after an 8k to 9k road trip from Los Angeles to Ontario (Canada) with three different drivers. My best guess is that the tire wear other owners experience is due to having an AWD version or being used mostly within the city in a lot of stop-and-go commuting. Upon visual inspection, my brakes are halfway to their original pad thickness. Before I bought my Sienna, I read reviews here that the models from the previous years, even the previous generation, had problems with the electronic sliding doors, which made me stay away from the LE, XLE, SE, and Limited versions, as well as staying away from the sunroofs (my Mazda 3 has all of those, so I don't need it on a van). The van is very basic, but I do love the layout of the dash and the look of the whole dashboard. However, I have installed a heads-up display with a small dark window tint material so the HUD display is clearer, and I am in the process of installing an aftermarket LCD navigation unit with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto since I already saved a lot of money getting the base model. The van is mostly used for long road trips and to go to work, mostly freeway runs. I do not have the center console, which makes it so much easier to walk right in the middle of the front row to get to the sliding doors on tight parking spaces. I wish the steering did not feel numb and gave me more feel for the road, and I wish the van did not have too much body roll, but then again, it is a van!
