2001 Toyota Sienna problems

toyota logo

The Toyota Sienna is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Toyota primarily for the North American market. It is named for the Italian city of Siena, in the region of Tuscany. It replaced the first generation Previa van in 1997 with a more conventional front-wheel drive layout and shares a heavily revised platform with the Camry. Both the Previa and original Sienna were smaller than the other minivans they competed against, but a redesign in 2003 (for the 2004 model year) increased the dimensions to match those of its competitors.

It was redesigned again in 2010 (for the 2011 model year). The third generation Sienna went on sale in the United States in February 2010 and is the first Sienna to ever receive a "Top Safety Pick" award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. A 2020 redesign (for the 2021 model year) saw the Sienna becoming a hybrid vehicle for its fourth generation. While previous generations of the Sienna were exported to select Asian and European markets, the fourth generation is the first to be produced outside of the United States as Chinese production commenced in July 2021 by two Toyota joint ventures. In China, it is also marketed as the Toyota Granvia.

Following the discontinuation of General Motors's all-wheel drive minivans in 2006, the Sienna was the only minivan in its class offered with AWD in North America until the 2021 Chrysler Pacifica was introduced with an AWD option in 2020.

The Sienna is not available in Japan and Australia as it is not produced in a right-hand drive configuration, and the segment in these countries is already occupied by the Alphard/Vellfire and the HiAce/Granvia respectively.

As of the fourth generation, introduced in 2020, the Sienna is now built on Toyota's TNGA-K platform, which it shares with most of Toyota’s other large MPVs and crossovers.

Common 2001 Toyota Sienna problems

Based on the information from the sources provided, here are the common problems with the Toyota Sienna 2001 based on complaints from owners:

  • Oil Sludge in Engines: Toyota Sienna models from the 1st generation (1998-2003) have been known to develop oil sludge issues in their engines. Toyota settled a class-action lawsuit related to engine sludge in 2007, affecting millions of vehicles made between 1997 and 2002 ().
  • Melting Dashboards: Another common problem reported by owners is the melting of dashboards under high heat, leading to warping and the extrusion of a goo-like substance. This issue has resulted in lawsuits and warranty extensions by Toyota ().
  • Transmission Failure: Some older Toyota Siennas, including the 2001 model, are prone to transmission failure, which can manifest as the engine revving without a corresponding increase in speed. Repairing or replacing the transmission system can be costly ().
  • Power Door Issues: Owners have experienced problems with power doors on the Sienna, which may stop working due to issues with the door's cable. This poses a safety risk and may require repairs ().

These problems highlight some of the key issues that owners of the Toyota Sienna 2001 have faced. Each problem can impact the performance, safety, and maintenance costs of the vehicle, emphasizing the importance of thorough inspection and maintenance when considering purchasing or owning this particular model.

THIS IS THE THIRD TIME IN THE PAST 3 YEARS THAT THIS PROBLEM HAS OCCURRED, SO IT IS DEFINITELY AN ACTUAL PROBLEM WITH THE HARDWARE OF THE DOOR LATCH MECHANISM ITSELF AND NOT SIMPLY A GLITCH THAT OCCURRED ONCE OR SOMETHING.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-10-14
  • VIN: 4T3ZF13C91U
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: THE HORN ON THE SIENNA WORKS INTERMITTENTLY. THIS IS A VERY UNSAFE SITUATION WHEN DRIVING AS A HORN COULD POSSIBLY PREVENT AN ACCIDENT WITH A CAR OR PEDESTRIAN. FIRST HAD THE PROBLEM IN 2014, BUT WHEN WE BROUGHT IT TO TOYOTA, IT WOULD WORK, SO THEY COULDN'T CHECK IT OUT. IN APRIL 2015, THEY FINALLY THOUGHT IT WAS A DEFECTIVE SPIRAL CABLE, SO THEY REPLACED IT, TO THE TUNE OF $400+. THREE DAYS LATER, WE HAD THE PROBLEM AGAIN. WEREN'T ABLE TO BRING IT BACK UNTIL RECENTLY. REPLACED SPIRAL CABLE AGAIN. PROBLEM RETURNED BEFORE THE CAR MADE IT HOME. VEHICLE IS BACK IN SHOP. I BELIEVE THEY SAID THEY ARE REPLACING THE HORN PAD ASSEMBLY, WHICH WILL COST ANOTHER $150 FOR THE PART. THEY ARE NOT CHARGING FOR LABOR AS IT IS UNDER A 1 YEAR SERVICE WARRANTY. FOUND OUT TODAY A COWORKER HAS A SIMILAR PROBLEM WITH A 2005 SIENNA. I GOOGLED, "PROBLEMS WITH SIENNA HORN" AND FOUND MANY PEOPLE WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. WHY HAS THERE NOT BEEN A RECALL AS THIS IS CLEARLY A SAFETY ISSUE. I FEEL THAT MAYBE THERE HAS NOT BEEN ANY SERIOUS ACCIDENTS ATTRIBUTED TO THIS PROBLEM AND SO IT'S "FLOWN UNDER THE RADAR", SO TO SPEAK.

PEOPLE COULD GET KILLED WHEN THE HORN WILL NOT WORK IN THE RAIN OR WATER. TOYOTA NEEDS TO HAVE A RECALL NOW TO SAVE THE LIVES OF MILLIONS OF MEN, WOMEN AND CHILDREN IN THE USA.

AFTER A BRIEF TIME I TURNED ON THE KEY AND WAS MET WITH A VERY LOUD GROWL FROM THE HOOD. AAA HAULED ME TO JOSEPH AIRPORT TOYOTA IN VANDALIA, OH. ON TUES, AUG 11, I CALLED TO SEE WHAT THEY HAD FOUND. THEY TOLD ME THAT THEY HAD FOUND NOTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR AFTER TESTING AND DRIVING THE CAR. I ASKED TO TALK WITH THE MECHANIC, WHO TOLD ME HE HAD TESTED EVERYTHING THOROUGHLY AND COULD NOT REPLICATE WHAT I HAD EXPERIENCED.

TIRES,WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-02-14
  • VIN: 4T3ZF13C91U
  • Components: TIRES,WHEELS
  • Summary: THE SPARE TIRE MECHANISM BROKE ON MY 2001 TOYOTA SIENNA MINIVAN. THANKFULLY I WAS TRYING TO REMOVE THE SPARE WHEN IT HAPPENED AND THE SPARE TIRE DID NOT GO FLYING INTO TRAFFIC. THE CABLE BROKE AT THE END WHERE THE CABLE GOES THROUGH THE METAL HOLDER/BRACKET THAT ACTUALLY CLAMPS TO THE WHEEL. IF THIS HAD BROKEN OFF WHEN THE VAN WAS MOVING, EITHER THE VAN WOULD HAVE BEEN DAMAGED BY THE SPARE GETTING CAUGHT BETWEEN THE ROAD AND THE VAN OR THE SPARE MAY HAVE HIT ANOTHER CAR. THIS IS MAYBE THE SECOND TIME THAT WE HAVE HAD THE SPARE OFF IN THE 258K MILES WE HAVE OWNED THE CAR SO IT IS NOT SOMETHING THAT WE INSPECT REGULARLY. THERE ARE A LOT OF THESE VANS OUT THERE AND I REALLY DON'T WANT TO BE BEHIND ONE WHEN THE SPARE LETS GO. THE DEALERSHIP CLAIMED THAT MY VAN DID NOT HAVE A RECALL ON THIS ITEM. *TR

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2011-10-29
  • VIN: NOT ENTERED
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: THE LEFT AND RIGHT REAR PASSENGER DOORS FAILED TO OPEN DUE TO BREAKAGE OF THE CABLE. I AM UNCERTAIN OF WHETHER THE CHILD SAFETY LOCKS WERE ENGAGED, HOWEVER, THE DOORS WILL NOT OPEN WIDER THAN APPROX. 6". REAR PASSENGERS HAD TO CRAWL OUT OF THE VAN VIA THE DRIVER'S OR FRONT PASSENGER DOOR. I AM ELATED THAT THE FAILURE OF THE DOORS DID NOT OCCUR DURING A HAZARDOUS CONDITION, SINCE THIS WOULD HAVE PLACED THE REAR OCCUPANTS IN EXTREME DANGER. IF TOYOTA AND NHTSA WAS AWARE THAT THERE IS A FAILURE IN THE CABLES AND THE MANUAL RELEASE OF THE REAR DOORS, THERE SHOULD HAVE BEEN A SAFETY ALERT AND/OR RECALL OF THE VEHICLES FOR REPAIR OF THE VANS. THE FAILURE OF THE DOORS IS NOT SIMPLY A MATTER OF COSMETIC ISSUES, IT IS POTENTIALLY HAZARDOUS AND LIFE THREATENING. AT A MINIMUM, THE DOORS SHOULD HAVE ALLOWED FOR MANUAL OPENING AND CLOSING, IF THE CABLES SHOULD BREAK. THE BREAKING OF THE CABLE, ALONG WITH THE INABILITY TO OPEN THE DOOR IS A DEFECT IN WORKMANSHIP, SINCE THE DOOR DID NOT OPEN TO ALLOW THE PASSENGERS TO EXIT THE VEHICLE. I AM REQUESTING, ALONG WITH ALL OF THE OTHER OWNERS WHO HAVE REGISTERED COMPLAINTS, THAT THE AGENCY INVESTIGATE THIS MATTER. AT A MINIMUM, THE DOORS SHOULD DEFAULT TO MANUAL MODE. *TR

TIRES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-09-29
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: I HAVE A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY ISSUE THAT DOES NOT FIT THE ORDINARY TYPE OF COMPLAINT. I BELIEVE THAT THE TIRE INDUSTRY IS PUTTING THOUSANDS OF DRIVERS AT RISK IN WINTER DRIVING BECAUSE OF POLICIES THAT IGNORE NORMAL DRIVING CONDITIONS. BECAUSE OF TEST ON VEHICLES THAT ARE SKIDDING OUT OF CONTROL THEY ARE MAKING POLICIES THAT PUT THE DRIVER AT RISK WHEN DRIVING IN SNOW. THEY RECOMMEND THAT TWO TIRES WITH GREATER TREAD ALWAYS BE INSTALLED ON THE REAR WHEELS. SKIDS ARE A RESULT OF DRIVING TOO FAST. HOWEVER IF YOU CANNOT MOVE THE CAR THEIR RECOMMENDATION IS OF ABSOLUTELY NO VALUE. IF YOU HAVE A FRONT WHEEL DRIVE VEHICLE IN DEEP SNOW AND CANNOT GET ENOUGH TRACTION YOU CANNOT MOVE. IF YOU ARE DRIVING AND A SNOW PLOW MAKE A PILE IN YOUR PATH IT MAY STOP YOUR CAN AND YOU MAY GET HIT IN THE BACKEND. IF YOU HAVE A STEEP HILL AND CAN'T GET UP YOU ARE A BIG HAZARD FOR ALL TRAFFIC BEHIND YOU. I TRY TO DRIVE WITH MY FRONT WHEELS IN MIND AND TO AVOID AT ALL COST LOSING TRACTION. ALSO IF YOU HAVE ABS BRAKES THEY MINIMIZE THE EFFECTS OF REAR WHEEL SKIDS. *TR

Negative 2001 Toyota Sienna car reviews

  1. Vance O'Conner 2024-11-19

I am confident in my decision that this will be my last Toyota Sienna. Despite having owned three of them, the recurring issues with my current van have left me with little faith in the brand. The frequent engine light issues have required me to take it in for servicing every two weeks. Additionally, the van has been consistently noisy since I first purchased it. The tire pressure light and sliding doors have also been problematic. Overall, I am confident in my assessment that this particular Sienna has not met my expectations.

  2. Julius Rath 2024-08-05

The rear brakes tend to squeal loudly, which can be quite noticeable when coming to a stop. Unfortunately, Toyota has been unable to find a solution despite replacing the drums, pads, and brake cylinders. Additionally, the recessed windshield design causes the driver's side wiper to push snow and sleet against the windshield frame instead of clearing it away. The small 17

  3. Scot Stanton 2024-06-19

Our Sienna developed engine oil gel, also known as sludge. However, the dealer rebuilt the engine with no issues and we have two friends who have also had successful rebuilds. Additionally, one of our friends received a reimbursement of $4000 for repairs. While we did experience some minor issues such as squeaky brakes, a broken AC, a broken O2 sensor, a fallen seat back, and a broken visor, we are confident in the overall quality of our vehicle.

Over the course of 9 years, we have invested nearly $10,000 in mechanical repairs and maintenance for our vehicle. Despite our high expectations, we encountered several expensive maintenance issues, including problems with the brakes during mountain trips with our kids and their gear. However, we were able to retrofit the brakes with racing discs and pads to resolve the issue. Additionally, we have replaced 3 alternators, 2 O2 sensors, and 2 overdrive solenoids. While we have experienced poor service support and have had to wait for parts to be ordered, we have always prioritized routine service to ensure the longevity of our vehicle. Although we have lost use of the car for a total of 20 to 30 days due to repairs, we remain confident in our ability to maintain and care for our vehicle.

The front passenger seat is extremely uncomfortable for someone with short legs, causing my wife pain after only 45 minutes to an hour of sitting. Despite trying extra padding and placing objects under her feet, the discomfort persists. It would greatly improve the experience if the seat height and tilt could be adjusted, particularly if the front of the seat could be tilted down slightly. Similarly, the driver's seat is adequate for her, but it would be even better if the tilt of the seat could be modified. Overall, these adjustments would greatly enhance the comfort and ergonomics of the vehicle.

This is a fantastic vehicle, the best I've owned in 40 years of driving. It is incredibly responsive, with no sag or pause, just a nice smooth flow of power and control.

No worries yet! The car has great mileage on the highway. However, the captain chair and rear chairs can be quite heavy to remove.

I bought the van in 2002 to replace my 91 Pathfinder. It has proven to be very comfortable on long trips with my two small kids. The gas mileage is what you would expect for a 6 cylinder engine. I have kept it serviced every 5000 miles at the dealer. Initially, I had a problem with the power sliding doors not working, but the dealership fixed it. Recently, at 36000 miles, the rear seat stopped pulling out. I have only taken it out 3-4 times. The dealership had to order a part to fix it. Additionally, the passenger power window doesn't go down all the time. Overall, I wished I could have afforded the Odyssey, but this van has been okay. My wife likes it for taking the kids around town. I don't recommend getting the optional center console as it is a waste of space and provides no additional storage.

I purchased my 2001 Sienna XLE almost 5 years ago, and it has been a reliable companion ever since. Despite being 17 years old, it still runs like a dream and has never let me down. Of course, there have been some minor issues over the years, but nothing that has caused me any major problems. The engine and powertrain have been particularly impressive, with great acceleration from the V6 and decent mileage. After around 200,000 miles, the engine started burning oil, but I was able to resolve this by switching to a high mileage oil blend. Now, at almost 250,000 miles, it doesn't burn or leak a drop of oil. All in all, the car has held up amazingly well, and I've only had to do the normal maintenance like oil changes, brakes, and tires. While there have been some annoyances, such as having to replace all the exterior door handles and the front speaker surrounds, these have been minor issues that haven't affected my overall satisfaction with the vehicle. I'm grateful for the time I've had with it, and even though it could die tomorrow, I'll always remember it as an amazing vehicle.

Great minivan! Although it's a bit on the small side, it's fun and comfortable to drive. I would highly recommend this vehicle to anyone.
