2011 Toyota Sienna problems

The Toyota Sienna is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Toyota primarily for the North American market. It is named for the Italian city of Siena, in the region of Tuscany. It replaced the first generation Previa van in 1997 with a more conventional front-wheel drive layout and shares a heavily revised platform with the Camry. Both the Previa and original Sienna were smaller than the other minivans they competed against, but a redesign in 2003 (for the 2004 model year) increased the dimensions to match those of its competitors.

It was redesigned again in 2010 (for the 2011 model year). The third generation Sienna went on sale in the United States in February 2010 and is the first Sienna to ever receive a "Top Safety Pick" award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. A 2020 redesign (for the 2021 model year) saw the Sienna becoming a hybrid vehicle for its fourth generation. While previous generations of the Sienna were exported to select Asian and European markets, the fourth generation is the first to be produced outside of the United States as Chinese production commenced in July 2021 by two Toyota joint ventures. In China, it is also marketed as the Toyota Granvia.

Following the discontinuation of General Motors's all-wheel drive minivans in 2006, the Sienna was the only minivan in its class offered with AWD in North America until the 2021 Chrysler Pacifica was introduced with an AWD option in 2020.

The Sienna is not available in Japan and Australia as it is not produced in a right-hand drive configuration, and the segment in these countries is already occupied by the Alphard/Vellfire and the HiAce/Granvia respectively.

As of the fourth generation, introduced in 2020, the Sienna is now built on Toyota's TNGA-K platform, which it shares with most of Toyota’s other large MPVs and crossovers.

Common 2011 Toyota Sienna problems

The Toyota Sienna, introduced in 1998, is known for its spaciousness and comfort, seating up to 8 passengers. However, some model years have been associated with specific issues. This article focuses on the 2011 Toyota Sienna and its common problems, as reported by owners.

  • Cracking Dashboard: The dashboard of the 2011 Sienna is prone to cracking, which can be an unsightly problem for owners. Replacing the dashboard can cost thousands of dollars, making this a significant issue for many.
  • Transmission Failure: Older Toyota Siennas, including the 2011 model, have been known to experience transmission failure around 78,000 miles. This issue is characterized by an increase in RPM without a corresponding increase in speed.
  • Power Door Issues: Some 2011 Sienna owners have reported issues with the power doors, which may stop working entirely. This can pose a significant safety risk and may be due to damaged door cables.
  • Air Conditioning System Failure: Several 2011 Toyota Sienna owners have reported issues with the air conditioning system, including compressor failure, refrigerant leakage, and electrical failure. These issues can be costly to repair, with one owner reporting a $2000 replacement cost for the compressor.
  • Heating System Failure: Some 2011 Sienna owners have reported issues with the heating system, which can also be expensive to repair. One owner reported a $1500 repair cost for their heating system.

In conclusion, while the Toyota Sienna is generally considered a reliable vehicle, the 2011 model has been associated with several common issues, including loss of engine power, cracking dashboard, transmission failure, power door issues, and problems with the air conditioning and heating systems. Potential buyers should be aware of these issues and consider them when making a purchasing decision.

STRUCTURE,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-12
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 5TDYK3DC8BS
  • Components: STRUCTURE,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: I was pulling my 2011 Toyota Siena into a parking space. My foot was on the brake and the car was going about 5 mph. The car made a slight sound, along with a perceptible yet small physical shift, and (while my foot was on the brake) independently accelerated with tremendous force. It was like it was ignited. The car hit a concrete pole and was totaled. The acceleration over-rode the brake. No one was hurt. The concrete pole averted what could have been a catastrophic accident, had we hit pedestrians, or had we rear ended a car or truck on the freeway. The brakes failed as the car jumped into independent acceleration. My safety and the safety of my passenger were both at risk. As I said, in a different situation, we might have hit pedestrians, or gone through the wall of the grocery store and hit customers. The concrete pole saved us and others. The mechanic at the service center where the car was towed said it was impossible to discern if there had been a failure in the system of the car - though clearly both my passenger and myself experienced that failure in the car's ability to override an independent, forceful acceleration not caused by the driver. There was no warning of any kind. On the Edmunds site, there are many, many testimonials by other drivers of the Toyota Siena of similar, frightening experiences of independent acceleration. It is terribly dangerous and should be investigated. If there is not a recall on this vehicle, there should be. This is a potentially catastrophic defect.

  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: I have a Toyota Sienna 2011 XLE for 4 years and both doors stops randomly when opening and closing. My daughter was stuck in the car at least 10 times. She afraid to use the car because she repeatedly in danger of falling, the beep sound comes and the door stops suddenly. I used to drove my car leaving my door open once, because the door stuck and I couldn’t realize till I drove. I was lucky, my door didn't hit anyone or any car in the parking lot. The people were looking at my car with scary eyes. Obviously, It creates a safety risk for my family and the people around me. Because a lot of people have the same door problem, I informed Toyota. They responded, they have an extended coverage for the Power Sliding Door Cable Sub-Assembly but it’s expired on 09/16/2021. They know the problem and solved it temporarily without informing the owners and now they said, it’s over, you need to pay it. I am not asking for my seat covers replaced. It’s definitely a security issue, a suddenly stuck door can harm/kill passengers and people around. Toyota knows the problem but refuses to solve it. I don’t want to drive this car with knowing the risk of hurting anyone especially my 6 years old daughter. It’s so shame one of the biggest companies of the world produces risky cars and they continue to sell them with knowing. They shouldn’t risk the people in United States easily like that.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-06-01
  • VIN: 5TDDK3DC8BS
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: The VSC and tract light stay on all the time. The Ford dealer I purchased the Van from said they had it fixed. I took it back and i was told to buy a new gas cap which I did from a Toyota dealer in my area. The light came on again. I took it back and was told it had an exhaust leak and it won't hurt the van. But I could bring it back for starting at $ 200.00 and have a leak test done on the Van, but it would take hours. Since then I've had cleaner run thru the system but the lights stay on all the time. Is this a safety hazard because its an exhaust leak? Can you please assist in the repair information before I spend hundreds of dollars chasing the problem. Thank You so much..... STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-12-27
  • VIN: 5TDYK3DC2BS
  • Components: STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Safety issue: can't open gas door, can't open sliding door Gas door cover on the driver's side will not completely latch (faulty hinge issue? ) which prevents the sliding door from opening. Sliding door has issues in moving back and forth. Apparently there was a recall for this issue and I was never notified. When I researched the issue, I found that there was a recall but because my recall is just out of the 10 year time frame, Toyota states they won't pay for the repair of the faulty mechanism and that I have to pay for it out of pocket. Considering there has been a pandemic for the since March 2020, it's hard to believe that they wouldn't honor the repair when I called about it in December. I made a phone complaint to Toyota at the end of December 2021 and no one has returned my call.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-01-11
  • VIN: 5TDJK3DC3BS
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: The brake pedal assembly fell off while driving. Due to this the driver was unable to stop the car by applying brakes. The driver let the car slow down by itself a little before applying parking brakes to bring the car to a complete halt. In this process, the driver crossed three set of lights, which were fortunately green. Two of the lights were school-crossings. The safety of pedestrians, other cars on the road and the driver themselves were at risk. It was purely by chance that they were able to stop the car before any collision. The van is now at a repair shop. The experts at the repair shop said this is NOT normal. They have asked to raise a complaint to ensure that Toyota checks out the possibility of this occurring in other vehicles of the same model / year. There were no warnings before this incident happened.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-11-01
  • VIN: 5tdkk3dc8bs
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Before June 4, 2020 my Sienna started having intermittent alerts regarding rear hatch alarms: interior lights blinking, dash display alert, & LCD alert. Bumpy roads and turns caused the alerts. I brought the van to a Toyota dealer on 6/4/2020 and the dealer could not reproduce the problem. Since then the alerts became constant, no longer intermittent. I had the 3rd row seats in use I became very concerned that rear hatch could open at any time with potentially a dangerous situation for the grandchildren. I brought the Sienna to another Toyota Dealer for service (11/1/2021)and described the ongoing problem and safety concerns. The Service Agent checked the Sensor Door Recall for the Sienna and informed me that this malfunction was NOT covered under the recall, although it triggers the sensor door alarm. He informed me that there would be a $142 Diagnostic Fee plus parts and labor to correct the problem. I told him that I removed the rear hatch interior panel and disconnected the door lock control so I could drive the car without the alarm distraction. I researched buying the Trunk Lock Actuator (Dorman Part # 931873, Rock Auto Parts $193.82 Tax & shipping) for self replacement. All that was needed was a 10mm socket to remove & replace 3 bolts and reconnect the electric connector and replace the panel. I completed this repair myself in less than 1/2 hour. I feel that this is a SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE and should be included under the sensor recall directive - or a new recall directive - for Sienna 2011-2018 without charge to the owner.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-09-01
  • VIN: 5TDDK3DC2BS
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I have complained about both rear sliding doors acting erratically for almost 3 years. These doors were under a recall, as they sometimes were overloaded and would cause the fuse to blow and the door(s) would/could swing open while moving. It happened to me NUMEROUS times. Once it was so bad, that I couldn’t bring my son yo school because the door wouldn’t stay shut. They beep upon auto open and you have to fight the door open or shut no matter if you switch off the “auto door” button or not. It has been to 3 different dealers in less than 3 years. The first dealer only replaced one junction box, and wiring harness on the passenger door because that it the only door that acted up while they were in possession of sienna. The door less than a 1000 miles later started to have issues - opening, closing, staying closed. I brought it to another dealer closer to my new house - they did not fix it as it didn’t do it for them with 10 tries while parked using auto and manual settings. That seems irresponsible and irrelevant as the ongoing customer complaint is the door swinging open whilst driving (neither dealer drove it, to see if it would swing open). Nonetheless, as the drivers side door never acted up at any dealer visit - they never replaced the recalled parts even knowing it has issues and saw video of it that I took. My vehicle is now sitting at a dealer with a $1600 repair bill for the same latch, as well as the back latch for the “recalled” parts - and they are refusing to acknowledge ANY RECALL WVER on the doors (safety recall G-04) as well as Toyota customer care so far is refusing to provide monetary assistance with this ordeal as my extended warrantee expired. One doors “repair” has made the door seemingly worse, and one door has never been repaired in regards to specific recalled parts as dealer states “no issue was seen with power sliding doors”. My niece lost a lot of $70 Birkenstock’s when my door FLUNG OPEN SO FAST at 50mph with no warning (door open light)

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-08-26
  • VIN: 5tdkk3dc6bs
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: 8/27/21 Friday, 5:30PM The steering wheel tightened up, making it extremely hard to maneuver, while the vehicle was in motion. Almost got into an accident when I couldn't turn in time to avoid drifting into adjacent lane. Brought it to my local dealer and they claimed the motor failed, needed to be replaced and since it's attached to the steering column and shaft, I would need to replace the complete system, $4600 before NYS tax, which means it will cost me over $5000 before I can get my vehicle back. The vehicle has not been inspected by any other entity or agency. The issue happened on Thursday night, 8/26/21, very suddenly, as I was pulling out of a parking space, suddenly the steering got really hard, almost hit another vehicle as I pulled out, then the steering wheel light came on as I was avoiding the other vehicle. 8/27/21, Friday, this morning, I dropped off the vehicle dropped off with the dealer's service dept. My service adviser called me this afternoon, about 2 hours ago, and gave me this bad news. I checked online and found other owners of the Sienna model having the same exact issues. Also found out other Toyotas models with same issues had recalls over the years, only the Sienna was never recalled. This is too dangerous an issue not to be recalled by Toyota. I can't afford to get this fixed, what am I to do? See one of the links I found: https://www.autoweek.com/news/a1865486/power-steering-and-electric-issues-cause-toyota-recall-112500-vehicles/#:~:text=Power%20steering%20and%20electric%20issues%20cause%20Toyota%20to%20recall%20112%2C500%20vehicles,-Camry%2C%20Highlander%20and&text=Toyota%20recalled%20112%2C500%20vehicles%20due,model%20years%202014%20and%202015. • Summary: Loud Noise from the rear end, diagnosed to be a viscous coupler bearing malfunction by my mechanic. Total cost of repair is 2428 Dollars. In doing my research into this matter, this is a very common issue with my model Sienna. It is also common with same year Rav4 which a TSB was issued and covered by Toyota T-SB-0080-13. To cite a transmission mechanics who have experiences with the Rav4/Sienna rear differential issues. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r1vg2sbYL68 I hope you can help, this is a very large cost which is almost the price of the car in total. My family needs this car as we do not live in a city with very little public transportation available to us for utilize. The price of the repair will be a hardship on our family. I hope you can convince Toyota to step up and stand behind their product, to a very well known issue. Thank you for all you do.

  • Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
  • Components: TIRES:TEMPORARY/EMERGENCY SPARE TIRE
  • Summary: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2004-2011 Sienna vehicles originally sold in, or currently registered in, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. The affected vehicles have a spare tire carrier assembly mounted under the vehicle whose attachment cable may corrode due to high concentrations of road salt splashing onto the spare tire carrier.
  • Consequence: If the carrier cable is corroded due to road salt, the spare tire may separate from the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Toyota sent owners in August 2014 an interim notification to advise owners of the recall and that dealers will perform an interim remedy to remove the spare tire and relocate it to the luggage compartment, free of charge. Owners are being mailed a second letter as parts become available and dealers will replace the spare tire carrier assembly with an improved one, free of charge. The remedy campaign is being performed in phases. The first phase of the recall began July 7, 2015. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. NOTE: 2004-2010 Siennas subject to this recall were subject to recall campaign 10V-160 initiated in 2010. Those owners are advised that they must have their vehicles remedied again under this campaign and that having the earlier recall completed did not remedy their vehicles. Additionally, model year 1998-2003 Siennas were recalled as part of safety recall 10V-160. Owners of those vehicles that have not had not the remedy performed on their vehicles, should contact their Toyota dealer to schedule a free repair.

These vehicles were sold with labels that were outside the allowable one percent of accuracy of actual weight added. Thus, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) Number 110, "Tire Selection and Rims."
  • Consequence: An inaccurate label could lead to owners overloading their vehicles and tires. An overloaded vehicle can result in a tire failure which may result in a vehicle crash, personal injury, or property damage.
  • Remedy: Southeast Toyota will notify owners and provide a corrected label with instructions concerning its installation. A small group of the affected vehicles will need additonal remedies which are still being developed. The recall began on May 28, 2013. Owners may contact Southeast Toyota at 1-800-301-6859.

Negative 2011 Toyota Sienna car reviews

  1. Erich Bogisich 2025-01-02

Hi there, we've been having some trouble with the driver's side door on our new Sienna. Unfortunately, we've taken it to the dealer three times and the national Toyota repair people, but they haven't been able to fix it yet. We were disappointed to find out that Toyota couldn't provide a loaner car for us during this time. When we called to request arbitration paperwork, we were informed that it would take 10-14 business days. While we're frustrated with the situation, we're hopeful that we can find a resolution soon. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

  2. Markus Olson 2024-11-05

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my new Sienna. As a loyal Toyota customer, I've purchased many Toyota vehicles for both personal and work use. Unfortunately, I've noticed that my new Sienna shakes when going downhill and applying the brake, even though it has less than 3000 miles on it. When I took it to the dealer, they explained that the brake rotor overheated due to the car's weight, and that it's not covered under warranty. I was disappointed to hear this, as I expected better from a brand new car. I understand that wear and tear is normal, but with only 3000 miles on the car, it seems a bit premature. Thank you for listening to my experience.

  3. Landen Aufderhar 2024-10-27

I requested to replace the seat with a better one, but unfortunately, Toyota did not have that option available. However, I offered to purchase the seat at my own expense. The windshield seems to be of lower quality, and the middle row is poorly designed. As someone who is 6ft1, I have trouble lifting the seat out, and the rails are exposed. In my opinion, North American Van provides better comfort. On the other hand, the van looks good, and its performance is impressive. Additionally, the cargo space and fuel economy are both excellent. As for the cabin filter, it may not be necessary for everyone. Lastly, I would like to request Chevy to bring back an 8-seater with their signature comfort.

  4. Royal Kessler 2024-08-19

The mini van looks nice, but unfortunately, the quality of the interior, especially the seats, is not up to par. It can be quite surprising to buy an expensive automobile and find that the seats squeak terribly every time you or a passenger sit in them. This is true for all the seats, including the seat backs and seat bottoms, which squeak even with the slightest shift in body weight. The squeaking noise is also present when you pull away or brake the van. Additionally, the design of the second row seats is not very practical, as removing them leaves a bulky track above the floor level. Overall, it's been over a year since I purchased this vehicle and I've already driven over 20,000 miles in it.

  5. Kenton Quigley 2024-08-14

This is our first Toyota! We were looking for a reliable van that would last 200,000+ miles. Unfortunately, we experienced some trouble with the transmission just 6 weeks out of warranty. The van was unable to shift into reverse and couldn't go over 20 mph. Toyota's response was simply 'Sorry'. We were surprised to hear this, as three mechanics we spoke to said that this is unheard of for Toyota. One transmission specialist even mentioned that he usually only sees Toyotas in his shop that have over 200,000 miles on them. The transmission repair shop that is fixing it said that the transmissions they are putting in the vans are too small. This was the first year for the 6-speed engine, so perhaps that is the problem with the smaller transmissions. If you are looking for a Sienna, we would recommend looking for an older used one. We have also noticed that this van eats tires. This has been a disappointing and frustrating experience, especially since we bought a Toyota to avoid these kinds of problems :(

Positive 2011 Toyota Sienna car reviews

  1. Quincy Kunde 2024-11-01

I recently traded in my 07 Odyssey EXL with RES for this beautiful Toyota. Unfortunately, my Honda had some issues with road noise, a bumpy ride, and required the replacement of the torque converter in the transmission and power steering pump, all before reaching 40,000 miles. Additionally, the side doors were very squeaky, which made it feel like I was driving a Chrysler product. In contrast, the Toyota is incredibly smooth, with a soft ride and comfortable 8th seat.

  2. Adan Halvorson 2024-10-15

I've owned my 2011 Sienna Limited for over nine years now and it has been an amazing vehicle for transporting my family, friends, pets, and all of our belongings. My husband frequently uses it to haul items from Lowe's or the garden center by putting the back seats down. As our youngest child is now 19, this is our second and final minivan. Although I have two minor issues with the van, it has been an overall fantastic choice for our family. The first issue is the low clearance during heavy snow, but I have been able to manage with snow tires and traction control. The second issue is the substantial blind spot during freeway driving, which took some getting used to. However, I am excited to upgrade to a vehicle with a side passing camera. If you live in a climate with less snow than we have here in the north, this is an excellent vehicle for families.

  3. Aidan DuBuque 2024-09-29

We recently sold our 2005 Sienna XLE and found a fantastic deal on a 2011 Sienna Limited ($2200 under invoice!). We are thrilled with the upgrade as the ride is much smoother and more comfortable. The interior cabin noise has also significantly improved compared to our previous vehicle. In our opinion, the Sienna surpasses both Honda and Nissan. The ability to move the second row so far back was a major factor in our decision to purchase the Sienna. Overall, we are extremely satisfied with our purchase.

  4. Jeffry Hayes 2024-09-05

We purchased our 'swagger wagon' this past April after conducting extensive research. We tested every competitive minivan and even a few SUVs, but our need for 7-passenger seating limited our options. We previously owned two Dodge Caravans, but they began to fall apart after about five years. In our opinion, the Kia was not up to par. Ultimately, we narrowed our choices down to the Odyssey and the Sienna. The Sienna won for three reasons: Firstly, it was priced a few thousand dollars less than the Honda. Secondly, according to Consumer Reports, Toyota reliability is unbeatable in the long run, and we hope to keep this van for many years. Lastly, in our opinion, the Honda is just plain ugly on the outside and looks like a hearse. In our opinion, the 2011 Sienna is the best-looking minivan ever.

  5. Alessandro Miller 2024-08-03

We had to move from a Rav4 to a minivan when we found our third child was en route since the Rav4 could not comfortably accommodate 3 car seats at once. Explored the Odyssey and Sienna and decided on the Sienna due to some of the technological upgrades the 2011 model received. The removable jump seat in the middle row is great for our oldest to make her way into the back row since the other captain's chairs are occupied with car seats and cannot fold and slide. Overall, the ride is smooth, quiet, and very comfortable. Fuel economy is decent (I like the "eco mode" notification for positive driving habit reinforcement). A great family car that will be with ours for a long time, hopefully!
