Toyota Sienna 2004 problems
The Toyota Sienna is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Toyota primarily for the North American market. It is named for the Italian city of Siena, in the region of Tuscany. It replaced the first generation Previa van in 1997 with a more conventional front-wheel drive layout and shares a heavily revised platform with the Camry. Both the Previa and original Sienna were smaller than the other minivans they competed against, but a redesign in 2003 (for the 2004 model year) increased the dimensions to match those of its competitors.
It was redesigned again in 2010 (for the 2011 model year). The third generation Sienna went on sale in the United States in February 2010 and is the first Sienna to ever receive a "Top Safety Pick" award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. A 2020 redesign (for the 2021 model year) saw the Sienna becoming a hybrid vehicle for its fourth generation. While previous generations of the Sienna were exported to select Asian and European markets, the fourth generation is the first to be produced outside of the United States as Chinese production commenced in July 2021 by two Toyota joint ventures. In China, it is also marketed as the Toyota Granvia.
Following the discontinuation of General Motors's all-wheel drive minivans in 2006, the Sienna was the only minivan in its class offered with AWD in North America until the 2021 Chrysler Pacifica was introduced with an AWD option in 2020.
The Sienna is not available in Japan and Australia as it is not produced in a right-hand drive configuration, and the segment in these countries is already occupied by the Alphard/Vellfire and the HiAce/Granvia respectively.
As of the fourth generation, introduced in 2020, the Sienna is now built on Toyota's TNGA-K platform, which it shares with most of Toyota’s other large MPVs and crossovers.

Common Toyota Sienna 2004 problems
The Toyota Sienna 2004 is known for its reliability and durability, but like any other vehicle, it has its share of common problems based on complaints from owners. Here are the most frequently reported issues:
- Electrical Hiccups: Complaints about electrical hiccups in the steering and braking systems are the second-biggest issue. Although the number of complaints is relatively low compared to door latch problems, it is still a concern for 2004 Sienna owners. These issues can manifest as warning lights on the dashboard, indicating problems with the anti-lock brakes, traction control, or other electrical systems.
- Exhaust System Issues: Exhaust system problems, such as leaks, faulty catalytic converters, and issues with the exhaust manifold, heat shields, and pipes, are common in the 2004 Toyota Sienna. Owners have reported replacing catalytic converters, dealing with exhaust leaks, and encountering issues related to the exhaust system's age and wear.
- Automatic Sliding Doors: Some owners have reported issues with the automatic sliding doors, which can stop working or have difficulty closing. However, this issue can be mitigated by turning off the automatic feature and manually opening and closing the doors.
- Heated Seats: A few owners have reported problems with heated seats, which may stop heating. This issue is not widespread but has been reported by some 2004 Sienna owners.
These common problems should be considered when purchasing a used 2004 Toyota Sienna. A pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic or Toyota dealership can help identify any potential issues and provide an estimate for necessary repairs. Regular maintenance and addressing issues promptly can help ensure the longevity and reliability of the 2004 Toyota Sienna.

STEERING,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-08-18
- VIN: 5TDBA22C84S
- Components: STEERING,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: About a year ago the Vehicle Stability Control warning light along with an audible alarm started coming on intermittently while turning on highways going uphill or downhill in dry weather and with no risk of any tire slipping. At first this only happened at higher speeds 65+mph. Over time, it has occurred more and more frequently and can occur at speeds down to 25 mph. At times, the Anti-lock Braking System is also activated resulting in jerky braking and loss of throttle. When people have been following me too closely, this has almost caused accidents. When these symptoms occur, it is always on a curve (of any degree, even slight curves) and while driving at least 25 mph, and even happens on flat turns now. The weather has always been dry with no risk of tire slippage.

It puts the occupants of the van and other motorists at risk of either causing a collision or causing the driver of vehicle in question to be unable to control the vehicle . The failure appears when going in a curve in the road at low speed causing the abs to engage lock the brakes and steering wheel rapidly decelerating the car and causing the car to jerk to one side or the other and go into a skid where the driver is unable to control the wheel due to steering wheel locking up when it happens the VSC and TRAC lights come on and there is a loud and rapid beeping that can be heard inside the vehicle. The issue usually appear when going between 25-40mph in banking curves
SEAT BELTS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-03-01
- VIN: 5TDZA23C24S
- Components: SEAT BELTS
- Summary: Driver's side seat belt buckle stopped locking in seat belt. Buckle unit then came apart. I called toyota; was informed that there was a recall on this matter. I was told that I was 2 years past the scope of the recall. I informed them I never received a notice of recall so how would I be aware of problem until it occurred. Spoke to supervisor was told I was no longer covered under recall. Went to 2 mechanics and was unable to obtain needed part. I feel that for this safety item there should be no time limit on a recall and I felt Toyotas help in remeding the situation was poor especially as they tout their vehicles safety.
STEERING,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-12-18
- VIN: 5TDBA22C74S
- Components: STEERING,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Sometimes when I take turns in my Sienna, the VSC starts going off and braking individual wheels without my control. This happens unexpectedly on highway bends at speeds of 60+ mph and it is difficult to control the car and keep from swerving into another lane. If the roads were icy when this happens, it would probably cause a dangerous accident. Toyota has a technical service bulletin for this, but not a recall - which it should since this is a significant safety issue. The TSB is BR008-04. There are many others experiencing this same issue: https://forums.edmunds.com/discussion/13855/toyota/sienna/vsc-sudden-activation-2004-toyota-sienna

STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-10-20
- VIN: 5tdza23c74s
- Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: While driving on dry freeway or other stable road conditions, the Electronic Stability Control kicks in, braked hard, causing the van to swerve, and the lights on the dash started flashing, accompanied by a loud beeping. This has happened multiple times now. There is no reason for this to be occurring. It is involuntary, sudden, and random. If someone were close behind me, they could rear-end the vehicle. It also sometimes pulls the steering so hard that it swerves into the other lane. This is a serious safety issue that Toyota needs to deal with.
TIRES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-10-14
- VIN: 5TDBA23C34S
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: P225/60R17 98T: Tires create vibrations in the steering column. One tire in particular creates severe vibrations that mechanic states could lead to problems with the steering components. Mechanic http://www.japaneseautorepair.org/ e-mail [email protected] (John). Coordinated w/ Sandy Boulevard Line up shop and one tire could not be aligned due to defect. 2004 Sienna van (140,900 odometer miles) is equipped with Toyo Observe GSi-5 195/65R15 91T (separate 16" rims purchased from Les Schwab) and there is no vibration at all. Les Schwab last tried to "balance" the defective tire in 2019. I have about the 4rth appointment Aug 21 2021 @ 9AM. I will also take the 2004 Sienna van to Japanese Auto repair (web site and e-mail above). to look for any defects. I probably need to put the Winter Observe GSi-5 tires on the car for safety, but they wear out quickly on summer hot roads.
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,WHEELS,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-07-08
- VIN: 5TDZA22C84S
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,WHEELS,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: I had the control arms replaced, then one of the bolts came out after a few thousand miles. I had that bolt replaced and the problem started happening intermittently after that. Everything will be functioning fine and then the speed of my vehicle is inhibited and it is hard to accelerate. It is very difficult to get from 40 MPH up to 50 MPH. On slight curves, not always, it will beep and the slip indicator light comes on and will apply the brakes on what feels like one side. This has happened at 35-60 MPH. The slip indicator will beep sometimes until I decrease my speed to under 25 MPH. I took it into a reputable tire and front end shop and they replaced a wheel bearing with sensor, and 2 front tires. The problem happened again within 5 miles and the shop said I need to take it to Toyota dealer to have it the steering angle sensors recalibrated. The Toyota dealership said that this is something that the vehicle does itself. They inspected it and took it for a test drive and said nothing is wrong. The problem happened again within a few miles of leaving the dealership. I have read countless forums of people experiencing the same thing in their Toyota Sienna and having the dealership telling them there is not a problem. I have also found that the solution could very well be worn rack and pinion bushings that are creating the play that are triggering the sensors. I don't think they gave it a proper inspection. This is a very dangerous problem, and even more so when the dealership is saying there isn't a problem. I am feeling very lost on what to do with my van right now. I have spent $1100 and 3 days of my time with the same thing happening. I
STEERING,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-07-10
- VIN: 5TDZA22C64S
- Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: While driving at approximately 30 to 50 MPH, on dry and smooth pavement, usually going on or off ramp to the left, the skid control engaged and warning sound came on, automatic brake takes over and start braking the van uncontrollably, pulling the vehicle to the right and nearly causing accidents.

STEERING,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-05-04
- VIN: 5TDZA23C84S
- Components: STEERING,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Numerous times (too many to say), the traction control indicator sensor comes on & I am unable to control the car. Typically it lasts for 2-3 minutes and turns off. It does not depend on road conditions, weather, and or speed. I have taken the car to the repair shop and they have not been able to capture anything on the engine diagnostic system. No codes were found for them to troubleshoot this issue. I've seen this problem being reported on several posts. Yet the NHSTA has done NOTHING!! TOYOTA NEEDS TO BE HELD LIABLE FOR THIS ISSUE. WAKE UP NHSTA. MAKE OUR TAX DOLLARS WORK!!! This poses a huge risk to my family and other drivers, not to mention impact on budget.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-03-20
- VIN: 5tdza22c74s
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Issue with traction (maybe called a VSC system-stability), when going up and down hills with slight curves, the wheels lock up and the vehicle slows down. Even when exiting a freeway ramp that is at a slight decline and curve. This started happening about 3 1/2 years ago, just once in a great blue moon. It started happening more frequently in the past year. Neither Carson or South Bay Toyota dealership could tell us why and could not find anything wrong after they inspected it. We took it to an independent service location and they could not find out why either. We looked it up online and apparently many Toyota Sienna owners are happing the same issue and no resolution. The VSC Trac light comes on when it happens and they goes away. It does not happen all the time. Safety issue for us, we can not really control the van when the wheels lock up and safety issues for all (us and others around us) is the fact that the van slows down and wheels lock up, which could cause someone to hit us.
SEAT BELTS,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-05-25

SEAT BELTS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-02-21
- VIN: 5TDZA22CX4S
- Components: SEAT BELTS
- Summary: FROM THE TIME I PURCHASED MY 2004 TOYOTA SIENNA, THE DRIVER-SIDE SEAT BELT HAS NEVER WORKED PROPERLY. MOST OF THE TIME IT WOULD NOT RETRACT, BUT WAS SOMETIMES FIXABLE BY MOVING THE HEIGHT ADJUSTER UP AND DOWN. SOMETIMES IT WOULD BE OVER-EXTENDED FOR DAYS, THEN RETRACT ON ITS OWN. IT IS NOW FULLY EXTENDED AND UNABLE TO RETRACT. I MADE AN APPOINTMENT TWO WEEKS IN ADVANCE WITH A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP (80 MILES AWAY) TO FIX IT BUT, BECAUSE OF A MISCOMMUNICATION, THEY WERE PREOCCUPIED WITH REPAIRING FOUR RECALL ISSUES AND NEGLECTED TO ADDRESS THE SEAT BELT PROBLEM. INSTEAD, THEY GAVE ME AN ESTIMATE OF $335 TO REPLACE IT. THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT, DATED JAN 7, 2016, WAS SENT TO OWNERS OF 2004-2006 TOYOTA SIENNAS. APPARENTLY THE FORMER VEHICLE OWNER DID NOT FOLLOW THROUGH. I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE FROM A MAUI DEALERSHIP IN OCTOBER OF 2018. "WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM ' ZF2 2004 ' 2006 MODEL YEAR SIENNA VEHICLES EXTENSION OF WARRANTY COVERAGE FOR FRONT SEATBELT ASSEMBLIES TOYOTA HAS RECEIVED A NUMBER OF REPORTS REGARDING FRONT SEATBELTS IN CERTAIN 2004 ' 2006 MODEL YEAR SIENNA VEHICLES. IN THESE REPORTS, CUSTOMERS HAVE INDICATED THAT THE FRONT SEATBELTS (RIGHT AND/OR LEFT) MAY SLOWLY OR NON-SMOOTHLY RETRACT. ALTHOUGH THE FRONT SEATBELT ASSEMBLY IS COVERED BY TOYOTA'S NEW VEHICLE LIMITED WARRANTY FOR 5 YEARS OR 60,000 MILES (WHICHEVER COMES FIRST), WE AT TOYOTA CARE ABOUT THE CUSTOMERS' OWNERSHIP EXPERIENCE. TOYOTA IS NOW EXTENDING THE WARRANTY COVERAGE FOR REPAIRS RELATED TO SLOW OR NON-SMOOTH RETRACTION OF FRONT SEATBELTS." SINCE THIS IS OBVIOUSLY A COMMON AND HAZARDOUS PROBLEM WITH 2004-2006 SIENNAS, IT SEEMS LIKE IT SHOULD BE WARRANTIED UNDER A RECALL PROGRAM.
STRUCTURE PROBLEM

Toyota Sienna 2004 recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 10 recalls for different components of the Toyota Sienna 2004.
- Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
- Components: TIRES:TEMPORARY/EMERGENCY SPARE TIRE
- Summary: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2004-2011 Sienna vehicles originally sold in, or currently registered in, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. The affected vehicles have a spare tire carrier assembly mounted under the vehicle whose attachment cable may corrode due to high concentrations of road salt splashing onto the spare tire carrier.
- Consequence: If the carrier cable is corroded due to road salt, the spare tire may separate from the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Toyota sent owners in August 2014 an interim notification to advise owners of the recall and that dealers will perform an interim remedy to remove the spare tire and relocate it to the luggage compartment, free of charge. Owners are being mailed a second letter as parts become available and dealers will replace the spare tire carrier assembly with an improved one, free of charge. The remedy campaign is being performed in phases. The first phase of the recall began July 7, 2015. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. NOTE: 2004-2010 Siennas subject to this recall were subject to recall campaign 10V-160 initiated in 2010. Those owners are advised that they must have their vehicles remedied again under this campaign and that having the earlier recall completed did not remedy their vehicles. Additionally, model year 1998-2003 Siennas were recalled as part of safety recall 10V-160. Owners of those vehicles that have not had not the remedy performed on their vehicles, should contact their Toyota dealer to schedule a free repair.
- Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
- Components: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
- Summary: Toyota is recalling certain model year 2004-2005 Sienna vehicles manufactured January 10, 2003, through August 10, 2005; and model year 2007-2009 Sienna vehicles manufactured February 20, 2007, through December 12, 2008. In the affected vehicles, due to a problem within the shift lock solenoid, there is a possibility that the shift lever could be moved out of Park position without depressing the brake pedal.
- Consequence: If the shift lever is moved out of the Park position without the brake applied, the transmission will either engage a drive gear or Neutral, increasing the risk of a backover or roll away crash.
- Remedy: Toyota will mail interim notifications to owners beginning in late October 2013. When parts are available, owners will be sent a second notice and dealers will replace the shift lock solenoid, free of charge. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331.

- Summary: TOYOTA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2004 AVALON VEHICLES; 2004 AND 2005 CAMRY, CAMRY SOLARA, HIGHLANDER, AND SIENNA VEHICLES, 2006 HIGHLANDER HYBRID; 2004 AND 2005 LEXUS ES330 AND RX330; AND 2006 LEXUS RX400H VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM JUNE 1, 2004 THROUGH MARCH 31, 2005, EQUIPPED WITH THE 1MZ-FE OR 3MZ-FE ENGINE. THE AMOUNT OF ADHESIVE AGENT APPLIED BETWEEN THE OUTER RING AND THE TORSIONAL RUBBER DAMPER (INNER RING) IN THE CRANKSHAFT PULLEY MAY BE INADEQUATE. IF THE ADHESIVE IS INSUFFICIENT, THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT THE OUTER RING MAY BECOME MISALIGNED AND IT MAY NOT PROPERLY ROTATE WITH THE INNER RING, CAUSING NOISE AND/OR ILLUMINATION OF THE BATTERY DISCHARGE INDICATOR LIGHT.
- Consequence: IN SOME CASES, THE BELT FOR THE POWER STEERING PUMP MAY BECOME DETACHED FROM THE PULLEY WHICH COULD RESULT IN A LOSS OF POWER STEERING AND A SUDDEN INCREASE IN STEERING EFFORT, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: TOYOTA WILL NOTIFY OWNERS, AND DEALERS WILL CHECK THE CRANKSHAFT PULLEY TO IDENTIFY WHETHER IT WAS PRODUCED BY THE U.S. SUPPLIER. IF SO, THE DEALER WILL REPLACE THE PULLEY WITH A NEW ONE AT NO CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING EARLY JANUARY 2012. OWNERS MAY CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331.

IF THE VEHICLE IS OPERATED IN THE COLD CLIMATE REGIONS OF THE UNITED STATES WHERE ROAD SALT IS FREQUENTLY USED, WATER SPLASHED BACKWARDS WITH HIGH CONCENTRATIONS OF ROAD SALT CAN REACH THE SPARE TIRE CARRIER AND CORRODE THE SPARE TIRE CARRIER ASSEMBLY CABLE.
- Consequence: THE CABLE MAY BREAK DUE TO EXCESSIVE CORROSION AND THE SPARE TIRE MAY SEPARATE FROM THE VEHICLE, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN A VEHICLE CRASH.
- Remedy: TOYOTA WILL NOTIFY OWNERS WITH AN INTERIM LETTER INITIALLY INSTRUCTING THEM TO BRING THEIR VEHICLE TO AUTHORIZED DEALERS TO INSPECT FOR CORROSION. A SECOND NOTICE WILL BE SENT WHEN THE PERMANENT REMEDY IS AVAILABLE. FOR MORE INFORMATION, PLEASE SEE TOYOTA'S AMENDED RECALL REPORT OF JULY 19, 2010. The Toyota Sienna has its pros and cons. On the positive side, I run synthetic engine oil and transmission fluid and do all the scheduled maintenance that this van needs. It has great visibility and good gas mileage. I plan on this van running for at least 500,000 miles. On the downside, for front wheel drive it is very heavy on the road and wears tires evenly in 15 to 20 thousand miles even with the top rated Michelin's. The radio, a cassette player, called out on us after our third year of ownership and the automatic sliding door freezes closed in the winter and needs frequent adjustments. Overall, I think it's a great van that is super safe, comfortable, and spacious. As someone who runs my own automotive shop, I am pleased to say that this van is not in my shop very often for repairs. If Toyota could fix the tire wear issue, I would definitely consider purchasing a new one after my 500,000 miles are up.

I'm so glad that you decided to go with the used 2004 Sienna Limited edition instead of the Odyssey EXL! It sounds like it has all the features you and your wife were looking for in a minivan, including great safety and entertainment features like side curtain airbags, a DVD player for the kids, parking sensors, and great handling. The mileage has been pretty good too, with around 16 city and 23 highway even with the AC on full blast. The only downside seems to be that the tires don't last very long, even though you're a conservative driver. Hopefully, the Sienna won't break down on you before you can get some new Michelin Hydroedge tires. Overall, it sounds like you made a great choice with the Sienna!

Your car has been driven all over New England in all kinds of weather. It runs great, and it's fun to drive. The features are terrific, and there's lots of room and storage. The engine is quiet, and the turning radius is tight, which is very helpful. You'll also enjoy good visibility and comfortable seats.

Your 2004 Sienna XLE Limited AWD sounds like a fantastic vehicle! With an impressive 165000 miles on it and still going strong, it's clear that this van has been well taken care of. It's great to hear that every feature is working perfectly and that you haven't had to make any repairs. The 3.3 engine is definitely one of the best ever built, providing plenty of power to move this hefty van while still achieving an impressive 23 MPG. It's also wonderful to hear that the engine starts up quickly and runs so quietly. Even better, the van has no rust despite coming from Ohio into PA. It's clear that you take great care of your Sienna and it's returning the favor. Thanks for sharing your positive experience with us!

I had this car for four weeks and decided to get rid of it. Unfortunately, the front seats were extremely uncomfortable and it was hard to see out of the car. To make matters worse, the transmission went out after just four weeks. As a result, I decided to sell it and get an Odyssey instead. I would advise against buying the first year model of any newly designed car.

This vehicle has had some issues in the past. We have had to replace some parts, such as the heaters in both seats, the steering column, and the back lift gate. Unfortunately, the skid control system has also been problematic, even activating on a dry interstate. We recommend considering an extended warranty if you are interested in purchasing this vehicle.

This car had a lot of issues that needed to be addressed within the first 6 months of ownership. Despite spending a significant amount on the 90k service, the repair bill after 5 years and 115k miles was over $8k. The rear passenger sliding doors were both broken, with cables visible on the sides getting stuck in the motor, costing over $2800 each to repair. Additionally, the transmission had leaked twice, the power steering motor had failed, and the motor was leaking oil in the head gasket and behind the timing belt. Three O2 sensors were also found to be bad. Based on these issues, it is recommended to consider other options.

The issues encountered with the vehicle have been thoroughly examined and it has been determined that they are not the fault of TOYOTA. It is unfortunate that these problems have arisen, but we have taken the necessary steps to address them. The run flat tires were replaced at 20km and the rims were unfortunately damaged during the replacement process. We have also noticed some rusting on the side doors, despite the protective tape. The sliding door wire snapped off due to rust, which occurred just two months before the end of the warranty. We understand that the paint job on the van may not be of the highest quality, as rust is showing through. We have taken the necessary steps to address these issues and have made changes to the front and back brakes, as well as the wheel bearings, twice in the past four years. We are aware of the recalls and are taking the necessary steps to ensure that our customers are safe. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to resolve these issues.

This car has had several issues, but I have taken the necessary steps to address them. I have had the sliding door repaired multiple times and have invested in replacing several components in the drive shaft, which has improved its performance. While I have had some concerns with the quality of the car, I am confident that with proper maintenance, it will continue to serve me well.
