2006 Toyota Sienna problems
The Toyota Sienna is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Toyota primarily for the North American market. It is named for the Italian city of Siena, in the region of Tuscany. It replaced the first generation Previa van in 1997 with a more conventional front-wheel drive layout and shares a heavily revised platform with the Camry. Both the Previa and original Sienna were smaller than the other minivans they competed against, but a redesign in 2003 (for the 2004 model year) increased the dimensions to match those of its competitors.
It was redesigned again in 2010 (for the 2011 model year). The third generation Sienna went on sale in the United States in February 2010 and is the first Sienna to ever receive a "Top Safety Pick" award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. A 2020 redesign (for the 2021 model year) saw the Sienna becoming a hybrid vehicle for its fourth generation. While previous generations of the Sienna were exported to select Asian and European markets, the fourth generation is the first to be produced outside of the United States as Chinese production commenced in July 2021 by two Toyota joint ventures. In China, it is also marketed as the Toyota Granvia.
Following the discontinuation of General Motors's all-wheel drive minivans in 2006, the Sienna was the only minivan in its class offered with AWD in North America until the 2021 Chrysler Pacifica was introduced with an AWD option in 2020.
The Sienna is not available in Japan and Australia as it is not produced in a right-hand drive configuration, and the segment in these countries is already occupied by the Alphard/Vellfire and the HiAce/Granvia respectively.
As of the fourth generation, introduced in 2020, the Sienna is now built on Toyota's TNGA-K platform, which it shares with most of Toyota’s other large MPVs and crossovers.

Common 2006 Toyota Sienna problems
The Toyota Sienna is known for its solid reliability, earning a score of 4.0 out of 5.0 from RepairPal. However, there are some common issues that potential buyers should be aware of, particularly for the 2006 model year.
One of the most prevalent problems with the 2006 Toyota Sienna is the loss of engine power, which has been reported by owners of the 2007 model. This issue is often accompanied by transmission problems, such as jerking and slipping, but the source of the problem remains unclear.
Another common issue with the 2006 Toyota Sienna is a cracking dashboard, which is an unsightly problem that can be costly to fix, potentially requiring a complete replacement of the dashboard.
Transmission failure is also a concern for older Toyota Siennas, with many reports of transmission failure occurring around 78,000 miles. This issue can manifest as the vehicle's RPM increasing without a corresponding increase in speed, and the potential fix is to replace the transmission system, which can cost over $3,000.
Power door issues are another concern for the 2006 Toyota Sienna, with reports of power doors failing to operate properly, which can be a significant safety risk. This issue may be caused by damage to the door's cable, and the potential fix is to replace the cable.
In addition to these common issues, there are also reports of exhaust problems with the 2006 Toyota Sienna, including issues with the muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, heat shields, and leaks. These issues can be costly to fix, with reports of catalytic converter replacements costing over $2,000.
In summary, while the Toyota Sienna is known for its reliability, potential buyers should be aware of the common issues that have been reported for the 2006 model year, including loss of engine power, cracking dashboard, transmission failure, power door issues, and exhaust problems. These issues can be costly to fix and may require significant repairs or replacement of major components.

STEERING,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-10
- VIN: 5TDZA23CX6S
- Components: STEERING,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: My vehicle steering/control has frozen a few times in the past 18-24 mos. This happens for me in wet conditions at slow speeds while trying to turn, usually to the right. The car also seems to slow on its own and pull to the side at these times. This has also happened while reversing out of a parking spot. I do not recall seeing any lights engage but I am more focused on steering the car safely and exterior factors at these times so I haven't noticed the dashboard. It feels like the power steering fails, and I have no control. Thankfully, I have not been moving at high rates of speed, nor been in a position to go into the lane of on-coming traffic or had someone in a lane near me, and have been able to hold in position or manually turn as much as needed. Steering seems to return once the turn is complete. I have been fearful of hitting someone or being hit from behind each time. My mechanic has been unable to recreate the experience and was unable to suggest a direct answer. I see others have had similar experiences and the same lack of answers from even Toyota. Having come across this website and seeing responses here to this exact problem I have had, I am hoping for more information or a recall soon!
STEERING,POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-01
- VIN: 5TDZA22C66S
- Components: STEERING,POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Bought the van used last year. Previous owner said mechanic could not diagnose the issue. On slight curves similar to on-ramps while accelerating the Vehicle stability control (VSC) will engage unexpectedly, sound an alarm and jerk the steering wheel. Some times to the point of pulling the vehicle out of its lane. Road speed is decreased dramatically as it feels as though the ABS is engaging. This has happened to me at least half a dozen times since June 2023. The condition will continue for maybe five or ten seconds until the wheel is straightened and speed reduced. Searching the Internet seems it's a fairly common problem. The fix might be to replace the steering rack or disable the VSC system. It's reported by those experiencing the issue get little to no help from the dealerships which strikes me as quite strange... From what I've read it seems to affect 2004-2009 Siennas
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-13
- VIN: 5TDZA23C36S
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: The bushing for the gear shift is broken causing the lever to disconnect from the cord preventing the vehicle from shifting gears. This caused the vehicle to become stuck in reverse. The car was stuck in reverse when attempting to shift to drive, nearly causing my wife to crash into another vehicle. There are multiple videos on YouTube demonstrating this problem, it is a known issue. The vehicle/component has not been manufactured. No warning lamps, messages or other symptoms.

- Summary: The vehicle stability control system randomly engages and activates the brakes without cause. This can happen on a gentle curve going under the speed limit. It is very scary and I am afraid it is going to cause an accident. Internet research shows many owners with this issue and no information on the cause or a fix
STEERING,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-07-15
- VIN: 5TDZA22C06S
- Components: STEERING,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Slip light indicator comes on and alarm goes off, while anti-lock brakes engage. This is happening while I'm driving on the highway never in the city. The car starts pulling to the right sometimes almost pulling me off the road. The road conditions are completely normal and dry no gravel in it no reason whatsoever for the anti-lock brakes to start engaging. When this first started happening it only happens on curves while I was driving approximately 35 mph. After a couple of months it started happening also while I was driving approximately 70 miles an hour going straight on a dry road. It almost pulled me off into a ditch. The steering is affected I can barely steer but I have managed to keep the car on the road. This is now happening more frequently. I was almost pulled into another car to my right once. At first it was only every couple of months but now I had it happen twice in about a hundred mile trip. There's no way I can get a mechanic to have this happen because you can't predict when it will happen and many miles it won't happen. It is very very dangerous and I'm afraid to take my Toyota sienna on the highway now. After researching it I have found that many people are having this trouble with their Toyota Sienna's there needs to be a recall or a repair. Apparently Toyota mechanics have replaced all kinds of things in the Sienna's but nothing has fixed the problem.
SUSPENSION PROBLEM

On January 19,2023 the rear axle mount broke off while driving. The vehicle was inspected by my insurance company, who denied my claim saying it was a result of wear and tear. The car fax report states it is a total loss due to flooding, which I am in the process of disputing. The cost to repair is several thousand dollars. Do I have any recourse regarding my vehicle. I had the vehicle serviced at Toyota for some normal mtce December 22 & 14th total cost of $3000.00, and there was no mention from them that there was an issue, which could have caused an accident.

- Summary: I've had multiple instances of driving along at varying speeds ranging from 35 to 65 mph, where the traction control kicked in abruptly, the slip indicator lights come on along with the traction control light on the dashboard, a beeping sound occurs, and the van brakes suddenly on its own. This has happened on dry pavement without any reason for traction control to kick in whether I'm driving straight or going around a curve. It is very dangerous and I've stopped driving the vehicle since I often drive with my 3 young children and I fear for our safety.

There's no known remedy for this problem and I can't even sell the car.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-05-26
- VIN: 5TDZA22C56S
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The back hatch power struts will not hold up the hatch. These are the replacement struts from the first recall. The hatch will open up and then automatically begin to close. Any attempt to access the back of the van results in the hatch closing down on my head. I have read online that many other Sienna owners are having the same issue with the replacement struts. There needs to be another recall. The cost of replacing the "replacement struts" is nearly $800. This is a faulty part from Toyota; they should be held responsible.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2015-01-01
- VIN: 5TDZA23C16S
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Right side power sliding door will not open at all. It appears that the latch will not release. This started happening a few years ago and it was brought to a mechanic who disabled the power opener, and this appeared to have fixed it, but then the problem started to appear while manually trying to open the door. The same mechanic doesn't recall what he did to disable the power and would be able to open the door and would send us home, where in a couple days after driving it would happen again. It's now in a state where it can't be opened at all. And since this door is required to be open to access the spare tire, it makes it even more of a safety hazard!

This van was such a big part of my family's life while growing up! It provided us with safety, comfort, security, and reliability throughout our journeys. It was our trusted companion through grade school, middle school, high school, and even college. I'm pretty sure it could drive itself to the beach! With its spacious interior, it could easily accommodate both passengers and cargo. Toyota's reliability is truly unmatched. Even after all these years, the comfort it provides during long trips is still outstanding, and it still manages to achieve a fuel economy of over 20 MPG on the road. Although it may not have the latest technology due to its age, it still holds a special place in our hearts.

If reliability and a quiet, smooth ride are important to you, then this is the perfect van for you! It's a high-quality ride, and Consumer Reports even uses the term 'Lexus-quality' to describe it, which I completely agree with.

Congratulations on your new car purchase! It sounds like you made an excellent choice. The car has a sleek design and plenty of interior space, including second-row windows that roll down and lots of cupholders. The 'front and center' middle seat in the second row is a great feature. Although the engine may seem underpowered at times, the handling is superb, and the gas mileage is within the EPA estimates. Even without power controls, the driver's seat is comfortable. It's clear that Toyota is dedicated to providing the best minivan around, and they've added thoughtful details that will appeal to their customers.

297,000 miles going strong! It's great to hear that you've been keeping up with regular maintenance, including changing the timing belt, water pump, rotors, alignment, and battery within the year. Your dedication to oil changes every 3,000 miles with synthetic oil is impressive! It's clear that you love your van and find it to be a smooth ride. While the power sliding doors may not be working, it's great to see that you've adapted to using the manual doors. Thanks for sharing your positive experience with us!

This vehicle has a lot of pros, it's very roomy and great for traveling. The engine and transmission last forever, but there is a caveat. The maintenance on this forever engine can be pricey due to the dreaded timing belt. You have to change the water pump as well when you do this, which can cost around $1000 and needs to be done every 80 to 100K miles. I also included a spark plug change the last time I did this, which bumped the cost up even more. However, the vehicle still runs great and I've taken care of the interior from day one, so the seats still look brand new. I have to give some credit to Toyota on the seat material as it has held up very well through the years. I still get 20 miles to the gallon around town, and I would expect that to translate to 24 or 25 miles to the gallon on the freeway. I bought this vehicle in February of 2007 with 20K miles on it and change the oil every 5K miles.

I recently purchased a Sienna after trading in my used Odyssey with leather seats and dvd. Although I loved my Odyssey, I found out that it had been crashed and not fixed properly. The Sienna has been reliable, which I am thankful for, but I have noticed a few issues. The seats are uncomfortable and the A/C is acting up at 80,000 miles. Additionally, the CD player and radio have been malfunctioning for the last 10,000 miles. Despite these issues, the car has been reliable.

The driver's seat lacks support and the pronounced leaning into turns can result in chronic back problems. The lumbar support feels like a football in your back, which unfortunately does not alleviate the pain. Additionally, the fuel mileage is extremely poor. However, I am confident in my decision to purchase this vehicle.

It's really frustrating to have to pay $500 just to change spark plugs, especially when it involves disassembling the front of the van and removing the whole fuel intake. The power doors have been a bit of a headache too - the dealer tried fixing them but they only worked for about 3 months. During the repair, they accidentally broke a plastic molding piece and tried to fix it with a little piece of rubber substance, but unfortunately it didn't hold and it broke off on the freeway. It's been a real challenge to keep the 17

I really love this van, but unfortunately, we have had a lot of expensive issues with it. Last year, the navigation went out, which means we no longer have radio, CD, or DVD capability. Both power doors also stopped working, and the rearview mirror was possessed and would move on its own before eventually stopping altogether. Additionally, the tires need to be replaced every 15,000 miles, which can be quite costly. While the van is mechanically in good condition, it's frustrating to have none of the electrical components working. Despite how well it drives, how comfortable it is, and how roomy it is, I don't think I will be buying a Toyota again.

I purchased this vehicle brand new in 2006 and have only driven it on well-paved roads in an urban environment. While I have had to perform more frequent maintenance than I would have expected from a Toyota, I have always followed the recommended schedule or Toyota service department recommendations for routine maintenance and repairs. The cabin design and comfort of this vehicle are outstanding. However, I have been disappointed with the reliability from a mechanical perspective. Over the years that I have owned and driven this vehicle, there have been numerous service bulletins and recalls. While Toyota has always been rated highly, my personal experience has led me to consider other brands for my future purchases. Despite this, I acknowledge that Toyota may still be a great choice for others. While I may not be able to drive my Sienna for 200,000+ miles, I still appreciate the time I have spent with it.
