2018 Toyota Sienna problems
The Toyota Sienna is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Toyota primarily for the North American market. It is named for the Italian city of Siena, in the region of Tuscany. It replaced the first generation Previa van in 1997 with a more conventional front-wheel drive layout and shares a heavily revised platform with the Camry. Both the Previa and original Sienna were smaller than the other minivans they competed against, but a redesign in 2003 (for the 2004 model year) increased the dimensions to match those of its competitors.
It was redesigned again in 2010 (for the 2011 model year). The third generation Sienna went on sale in the United States in February 2010 and is the first Sienna to ever receive a "Top Safety Pick" award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. A 2020 redesign (for the 2021 model year) saw the Sienna becoming a hybrid vehicle for its fourth generation. While previous generations of the Sienna were exported to select Asian and European markets, the fourth generation is the first to be produced outside of the United States as Chinese production commenced in July 2021 by two Toyota joint ventures. In China, it is also marketed as the Toyota Granvia.
Following the discontinuation of General Motors's all-wheel drive minivans in 2006, the Sienna was the only minivan in its class offered with AWD in North America until the 2021 Chrysler Pacifica was introduced with an AWD option in 2020.
The Sienna is not available in Japan and Australia as it is not produced in a right-hand drive configuration, and the segment in these countries is already occupied by the Alphard/Vellfire and the HiAce/Granvia respectively.
As of the fourth generation, introduced in 2020, the Sienna is now built on Toyota's TNGA-K platform, which it shares with most of Toyota’s other large MPVs and crossovers.

Common 2018 Toyota Sienna problems
The 2018 Toyota Sienna is known for its outstanding reliability and low maintenance costs, but there are some common problems reported by owners that are worth noting. The most widespread problem is excessive brake wear, which tends to occur between 15,000 and 20,000 miles.
Another common issue reported by some 2018 Sienna owners is poor gas mileage, which is often noticed around 1,500 miles.

In terms of longevity, a well-maintained 2018 Toyota Sienna can last around 300,000 miles, which is slightly longer than other popular minivans like the Honda Odyssey. Regular annual maintenance costs are similar to other minivans according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $534 per year.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-30
- VIN: 5TDXZ3DCXJS

- Summary: This is a reoccurring issue on numerous occasions but the transmission programming is a danger to drivers when it is in economy mode (the default setting when car starts up). The transmission constantly starts at a higher gear (3rd or 4th) and reduces throttle input from a stop. It makes for a slower takeoff when making a right turn on the stop sign because the engine would be lugging. Similarly when trying to overtake or merge lanes and you try to speed up the vehicle, the car does not want to downshift. The above mentioned problems are not there when eco-mode is disabled or the car is put into sport mode.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-05
- VIN: 5TDDZ3DC2JS
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: There has been a "whining" noise or "hum" upon acceleration noticed for several months to a year, could be longer, but getting worse over time. There is also a delay when pressing on gas for the vehicle to actually accelerate. I have had many instances where I am almost hit from behind because of this delay. Obviously the person's behind me have been following me entirely too closely, but nonetheless, scary. This is our primary vehicle for our family, which carries 4 precious boys. I am aware of the CSP already in place for this issue but have been told that my specific vehicle does not qualify for the customer protection program. That seems very odd given the amount of vehicle's listed as "affected"(83,700) sienna's and 66,500 highlanders. You cannot tell me that there are not more out there like mine that are having the SAME problems but being told "not covered". I do not think anyone should have to drive a vehicle with children in it that you are unsure when your transmission is just going to go out or fear getting hit from behind because of the delay in acceleration. Please please do something about this in order to hold toyota accountable!

STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-07-03
- VIN: 5TDYZ3DC8JS
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: The front passenger side bumper snap(s) comes undone, by air flow, as vehicle travels down the road - this causes further tearing of the supporting plastic frame. Local Toyota dealership says this initially was caused by a driver of the vehicle hitting a concrete curb. Note: Bottom of the bumper is only 8 inches from ground surface. The safety issue is: the bumper and its supporting plastic frame will eventually break and fall off vehicle while in transport. I have witnessed this several times on other vehicles (especially on Toyota's). Dealer compounds problem by saying entire bumper has to be replaced at high cost to customer. Customer delays repair (as I have). This causes further damage to the supporting plastic frame. I have gone from one snap to several snaps in duration. I sent Corporate Toyota a complaint - Essentially, they said they would not do anything .

- Consequence: If the wheels crack at the spokes, the wheel may separate from the hub assembly causing a loss of vehicle control and increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Toyota began notifying owners initially by phone on February 26, 2018 and will mail letters to any unnotified owner starting on April 20, 2018. Dealers will inspect the wheels and replace them if necessary depending on their production location, free of charge. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371. Toyota's number for this recall is J0J.

I am writing this review 3 months and 3500 miles into owning a 2018 Sienna XLE. I am very impressed with the safety features. In fact, the automatic assist braking helped save me from an accident when the vehicle in front of me came to a sudden stop on the highway because they missed their exit! The radar proximity alarm sounded and brakes were applied before I realized that the car in front of me was coming to a complete stop, without any cars in front of it. I have received lots of compliments on the comfort of the interior, especially the seats. I live in Florida, but ended up buying the car in Virginia, because apparently Toyota is separated into three regions: Southeast, Gulf Coast, and everything else. The Sienna was about $3k less in Virginia than in FL. It was well worth the drive! I do wish Toyota would have rounded dials for the air conditioner, similar to an iPod, rather than push buttons. You have to look down each time to adjust the buttons. If you had a dial, you could spin it without having to look down. I am not a fan of Toyota's Ensuite. I wish I could have bought the car without it. However, overall I am very happy with the purchase, especially considering the great price I got for it. The Odyssey was its biggest competition, but the 2018 Sienna seemed like a better value; and I can confidently say that I made the right decision.

This AWD Sienna is amazing! As someone who has driven the Mercury Grand Marquis for over 30 years, I never thought I would find a car as comfortable as my old one, but this Sienna proved me wrong. The radar cruise control is a great feature, and I love how it turns on a dime. Plus, it's a whole foot shorter than the Marquis, which means there's plenty of room for my grandsons and their car seats. It even fits perfectly in my garage!

Edmunds helped me get a great price with a lot of additional equipment at no extra cost.

This is a great choice if you're looking for a spacious and reliable mini-van.

The van we ended up purchasing was a very well taken care of Sienna SE, with leather and all the goods. It's perfect for our two kids and two show dogs. There's so much space and it still drives like a car, not a van. I absolutely love it!

Hello! I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share my experience with the Toyota Sienna 2018 that my family and I recently leased. Overall, we have enjoyed the comfortable ride and good pick up of the vehicle. However, we did encounter an unexpected issue with the original equipment tires that came with the car. Unfortunately, these Firestone tires are only good for 30,000 miles, which we were not made aware of at the time of leasing. As a result, we now need to purchase new tires with 4 months left on our 36,000 mile lease. While this has been frustrating, I believe it is important for Toyota to be transparent about the tire mileage when leasing or selling this car. I have never had this issue with my previous leases and I hope that future buyers will be aware of this potential expense. Thank you for your time and consideration.

We recently said goodbye to our third Toyota Sienna due to recurring issues with the brakes and sliding doors. Despite our love for the van's spaciousness and ride quality, we found that the brakes required replacement before 36000 miles and the sliding doors were sticking and grinding. While Toyota has issued a recall for the sliding door issue, there is currently no repair available. Although the V-6 engine had excellent response, the gas mileage of 22mpg could have been better.
