2008 Toyota Sienna problems
The Toyota Sienna is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Toyota primarily for the North American market. It is named for the Italian city of Siena, in the region of Tuscany. It replaced the first generation Previa van in 1997 with a more conventional front-wheel drive layout and shares a heavily revised platform with the Camry. Both the Previa and original Sienna were smaller than the other minivans they competed against, but a redesign in 2003 (for the 2004 model year) increased the dimensions to match those of its competitors.
It was redesigned again in 2010 (for the 2011 model year). The third generation Sienna went on sale in the United States in February 2010 and is the first Sienna to ever receive a "Top Safety Pick" award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. A 2020 redesign (for the 2021 model year) saw the Sienna becoming a hybrid vehicle for its fourth generation. While previous generations of the Sienna were exported to select Asian and European markets, the fourth generation is the first to be produced outside of the United States as Chinese production commenced in July 2021 by two Toyota joint ventures. In China, it is also marketed as the Toyota Granvia.
Following the discontinuation of General Motors's all-wheel drive minivans in 2006, the Sienna was the only minivan in its class offered with AWD in North America until the 2021 Chrysler Pacifica was introduced with an AWD option in 2020.
The Sienna is not available in Japan and Australia as it is not produced in a right-hand drive configuration, and the segment in these countries is already occupied by the Alphard/Vellfire and the HiAce/Granvia respectively.
As of the fourth generation, introduced in 2020, the Sienna is now built on Toyota's TNGA-K platform, which it shares with most of Toyota’s other large MPVs and crossovers.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-16
- VIN: 5TDBK22C38S

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-04
- VIN: 5TDZK22C48S
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: The material used by Toyota to manufacture the dash is breaking down. Toyota is aware of this issue due to cracking and offered a limited extended warranty which I never received any notification (and many others did not per Toyota's chat forum). Cracking I can deal with. But now the material is continuing to break down and a thick sticky liquid is separating and rising to the surface creating a terrible sheen. When exposed to direct sunlight the visibility through the front windshield is dangerously low. The road basically disappears. I brought this to the attention of Toyota Brand Engagement Center on Nov. 10. 2023 (File #231110000552). I requested Toyota do the right thing, update their response policy, and authorize a dash replacement at a local Toyota dealership, but they refused based on the response policy they had established many years ago even after I explained the situation is not just cosmetic any longer. I explained the sudden loss of visibility and how incredibly dangerous and frightening it was, but they still refused to address the issue, so I am forced to bring this to your attention. Based on the Toyota's forum this is a widespread issue through several model years. Based on my experience I am confident there will be many accidents due to this manufacturing defect. Please investigate and request Toyota do the right thing to protect their customers.

- VIN: 5TDZK22C28S
- Components: STEERING,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: THE VEHICLE STABILITY CONTROL WILL UNEXPECTEDLY ENGAGE IN INSTANCES WHERE IT SHOULDN'T ACTIVATE. THE MOST COMMON IS A LONG, SLIGHT CURVE ON AT FREEWAY SPEEDS ON DRY PAVEMENT. THE SECOND MOST COMMON SCENARIO IS ACCELERATING TO ENTER THE FREEWAY. WHEN VSC ENGAGES, THE VEHICLE WILL LURCH TO THE SIDE IT WAS ACTIVATED ON AND CURTAIL ANY ACCELERATION. THIS MAKES THE VEHICLE HARD TO CONTROL WHEN ON A FREEWAY CURVE AND WHEN ATTEMPTING TO ACCELERATE TO MERGE ONTO THE FREEWAY, CAUSING UNEXPECTED MOTION THAT IS A HAZARD TO REMAINING ON THE ROAD OR CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO BE IN AN ACCIDENT WITH OTHER VEHICLES. THERE IS NO INDICATION THAT THERE ARE MALFUNCTIONS IN ANY SYSTEM THAT WOULD CAUSE THIS TO OCCUR. NOTE: MILEAGE ON THE ODOMETER IS ~170,000 MILES.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC) PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-10-01
- VIN: 5TDZK22C68S
- Components: ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC)
- Summary: WHEN DRIVING NORMALLY IN DRY CONDITIONS, THE VEHICLE STABILITY CONTROL ENGAGES WHEN MAKING SLOW TURNS AT ABOUT 45 TO 55 MPH. IT HAPPENS MOSTLY WHEN STEERING TO THE RIGHT BUT CAN HAPPEN WHEN TURNING LEFT. THIS RESULTS IN DANGEROUS DRIVING CONDITIONS WHERE THE BRAKES UNEXPECTEDLY ENGAGE OR THE CAR DOWN SHIFTS TO A LOWER GEAR. IT HAS ALMOST CAUSED A WRECK AND HAS PLACED ME AND OTHERS IN DANGER. THE PROBLEM BEGAN ABOUT 2 TO 3 YEARS AGO AND HAS BECOME PROGRESSIVELY WORSE. OTHER OWNERS OF THIS MAKE AND MODEL HAVE REPORTED SIMILAR ISSUES WITHOUT RESOLUTION BY TOYOTA, DEALERS OR AUTO REPAIR SHOPS. I AM ONLY ABLE TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE BY REMOVING THE FUSE THAT CONTROLS THE STABILITY CONTROL SYSTEM. SEE HTTPS://WWW.CARGURUS.COM/CARS/DISCUSSION-C9152_DS656326 FOR ONE EXAMPLE OF A DISCUSSION THREAD. GIVEN THE PERVASIVENESS OF THIS PROBLEM, IT IS APPARENT THAT THIS IS A SYSTEMIC PROBLEM WITH THE ENGINEERING OR MANUFACTURING OF THIS VEHICLES AND TOYOTA SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THIS POTENTIALLY LIFE THREATENING PROBLEM.
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-12-01
- VIN: 5TDZK22C98S
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: MY VEHICLE HAS 138,000 MILES AND WHEN I INQUIRED ABOUT FIXING THE SLIDING DOOR, I WAS TOLD THAT THE RECALL WAS OVER IN 2016; HOWEVER, I KNOW OF A PERSON THAT WAS ABLE TO HAVE HIS VEHICLE FIXED BY TOYOTA. IN FACT, TOYOTA REPLACE BOTH THE DOOR SLIDING COMPONENTS / LATCHES. FOR MY VEHICLE I TRIED GETTING TOYOTA TO FIX THIS LAST YEAR AND TRIED AGAIN TODAY BUT TOYOTA WILL NOT COVER THESE REPAIRS. I WANT IT DOCUMENTED THAT THIS VIN HAS NOT BEEN FIXED REGARDING THE SLIDING DOOR AND SHOULD A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE ARISE IN THE FUTURE DUE TO THESE DOORS, THIS WILL SERVER AS DOCUMENTATION. THE ISSUE BEGAN ABOUT 1 YEAR AGO WHEN THE DRIVER SIDE SLIDING DOOR WOULD NOT OPEN. THIS YEAR I HAD TO TAKE IT ON MYSELF TO TRY AND FIX THE ISSUE DUE TO TOYOTA NOT WILLING TO COVER THE COSTS. THE CABLE FOR THE SLIDING DOOR HAD FRAYED AND WHEN THE DOOR WAS MANUALLY OPENED, IT WOULD ONLY OPEN SOME BUT NOT FULLY. THE ROLLER LATCH FOR THIS DOOR ALSO APPEARS TO BE BENT AND NOW THE DOOR IS CLOSE TO HITTING THE SIDE PANEL WHEN OPENED; I HAD TO REMOVE THE CABLE COMPONENTS MYSELF TO ALLOW THE DOOR TO OPEN. I BELIEVE THE ESTIMATED REPAIR COSTS FOR HAVING BOTH DOORS MECHANISMS REPLACED IS $4,000 AND I CANNOT AFFORD THAT COSTS. IN 2016 I DO NOT RECOLLECT BEING INFORMED BY TOYOTA REGARDING THE SLIDING DOOR ISSUES AND NOW MY VEHICLE CANNOT BE REPAIRED FOR THAT SERVICE PROGRAM HAS EXPIRED.

- Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
- Components: TIRES:TEMPORARY/EMERGENCY SPARE TIRE
- Summary: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2004-2011 Sienna vehicles originally sold in, or currently registered in, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. The affected vehicles have a spare tire carrier assembly mounted under the vehicle whose attachment cable may corrode due to high concentrations of road salt splashing onto the spare tire carrier.
- Consequence: If the carrier cable is corroded due to road salt, the spare tire may separate from the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Toyota sent owners in August 2014 an interim notification to advise owners of the recall and that dealers will perform an interim remedy to remove the spare tire and relocate it to the luggage compartment, free of charge. Owners are being mailed a second letter as parts become available and dealers will replace the spare tire carrier assembly with an improved one, free of charge. The remedy campaign is being performed in phases. The first phase of the recall began July 7, 2015. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. NOTE: 2004-2010 Siennas subject to this recall were subject to recall campaign 10V-160 initiated in 2010. Those owners are advised that they must have their vehicles remedied again under this campaign and that having the earlier recall completed did not remedy their vehicles. Additionally, model year 1998-2003 Siennas were recalled as part of safety recall 10V-160. Owners of those vehicles that have not had not the remedy performed on their vehicles, should contact their Toyota dealer to schedule a free repair.

In the affected vehicles, due to a problem within the shift lock solenoid, there is a possibility that the shift lever could be moved out of Park position without depressing the brake pedal.
- Consequence: If the shift lever is moved out of the Park position without the brake applied, the transmission will either engage a drive gear or Neutral, increasing the risk of a backover or roll away crash.
- Remedy: Toyota will mail interim notifications to owners beginning in late October 2013. When parts are available, owners will be sent a second notice and dealers will replace the shift lock solenoid, free of charge. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331.

Congratulations on your new 08 XLE! It's great to hear that you've been enjoying it so much. The engine sounds really powerful and it's impressive that you've been getting such good gas mileage. The comfortable seats and smooth ride must make for a really enjoyable driving experience. The JBL sound system and navigation system with Bluetooth and satellite radio sound like great features too. It's good to know that the build quality is top notch and that the resale value is the best. Thanks for sharing your positive experience with us!

I'm delighted to share that many of my passengers, particularly the elderly, have expressed their appreciation for the comfortable leather seats and spacious cabin of this vehicle. It's also great for hauling when the seats are stowed. I previously owned a noisy 8-cylinder Jeep, so I'm pleased to report that the Sienna is much quieter, although it can still be a bit loud on the freeway. I've been driving it for over 18 months now and, thankfully, I haven't experienced any issues. While the mileage isn't exceptional, it's exactly what the manufacturer advertised.

The Sienna is a fantastic vehicle that offers great value for your money. Its versatility, quality, and comfort are unmatched, and many of its features exceeded our expectations. In fact, my wife, who was initially hesitant about driving a minivan, became a big fan after experiencing the Sienna. This is truly a remarkable achievement in the automotive industry!

The vehicle has excellent interior and exterior quality with no problems. It handles well and has very good acceleration, making it a reliable and comfortable option. However, there is a slight vibration that can be felt in the engine compartment while shifting gears and driving on the road, which can make for a tiring drive. Additionally, the transmission may slip at low speeds, which can affect the driveability of the vehicle. It is important to be cautious when test driving and not take anything for granted. The vehicle is 1 year old with fifteen thousand miles and gets 14 to 17 mpg around town, although it broke 30 mpg over the road once, it now barely breaks 20. It is recommended to test drive with care and ensure you get one of the good ones. Thank you for considering Toyota as your vehicle of choice.

After owning our Sienna for 18 months, we have decided to trade it in for a Benz. The gas mileage has been consistently poor, averaging only 15.9 on a trip. The handling is rather uninspiring and the acceleration is sluggish. Additionally, the faux wood trim feels out of place in a minivan that costs $41k. Furthermore, putting down the 3rd row seats is inconvenient. In our opinion, it would be more cost-effective to purchase a Town and Country instead.

My 2008 Sienna, which is 3 years and 2 months old, unfortunately experienced an A/C coolant leak due to tubing corrosion underneath the vehicle at the rear. The dealership quoted over $1,300 for the tubing replacement and attributed the corrosion to road salt in Western PA. However, there is no guarantee that it will not re-occur in 2-3 years. Additionally, I have had some trouble with the tires. The first set of Dunlop tires wore out after only 19,000 miles, and the second set of Goodyear tires is nearly worn out after 20,000 miles.

I have owned 4 Toyotas in the past, but unfortunately, I am underwhelmed with this vehicle. My previous van was a Kia and I would not trade it for a Toyota ever again. I have noticed that this van has some issues with fit and finish, particularly with the driver's door, rear gate, and trim. Additionally, I find this van to be uncomfortable and cheaply made. Unfortunately, the engine has sounded like an old truck in cold weather since the day we bought it, and we have been told that this is normal. If this is the case, then it is disappointing. We bought this van based on Toyota's reputation, but it seems that they may need to take a lesson from themselves and go back to making good cars.

We purchased a used 2008 model from the Toyota dealer with 70K miles on it, and the price was reasonable. Although the interior is not the best, we have noticed that the rear passenger air turns on and off intermittently without anyone turning it on. After researching online, we found similar complaints on the ToyotaSienna forum. Unfortunately, the dealer informed us that it is in 'as is' condition, and we have not been able to find a solution. Additionally, we have noticed that the seats are of poor quality and the hand rest for all seats are poorly built, which makes it inconvenient for the driver to use the hand rest (Right). The center console between the driver and passenger could have been made better, which we believe has been addressed in the new model. Lastly, we have noticed that the seat belts are of poor quality. Despite these issues, we are still satisfied with our purchase.
