1999 Toyota Sienna problems

The Toyota Sienna is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Toyota primarily for the North American market. It is named for the Italian city of Siena, in the region of Tuscany. It replaced the first generation Previa van in 1997 with a more conventional front-wheel drive layout and shares a heavily revised platform with the Camry. Both the Previa and original Sienna were smaller than the other minivans they competed against, but a redesign in 2003 (for the 2004 model year) increased the dimensions to match those of its competitors.

It was redesigned again in 2010 (for the 2011 model year). The third generation Sienna went on sale in the United States in February 2010 and is the first Sienna to ever receive a "Top Safety Pick" award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. A 2020 redesign (for the 2021 model year) saw the Sienna becoming a hybrid vehicle for its fourth generation. While previous generations of the Sienna were exported to select Asian and European markets, the fourth generation is the first to be produced outside of the United States as Chinese production commenced in July 2021 by two Toyota joint ventures. In China, it is also marketed as the Toyota Granvia.

Following the discontinuation of General Motors's all-wheel drive minivans in 2006, the Sienna was the only minivan in its class offered with AWD in North America until the 2021 Chrysler Pacifica was introduced with an AWD option in 2020.

The Sienna is not available in Japan and Australia as it is not produced in a right-hand drive configuration, and the segment in these countries is already occupied by the Alphard/Vellfire and the HiAce/Granvia respectively.

As of the fourth generation, introduced in 2020, the Sienna is now built on Toyota's TNGA-K platform, which it shares with most of Toyota’s other large MPVs and crossovers.

Common 1999 Toyota Sienna problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the 1999 Toyota Sienna, several common problems have been identified:

  • Steering Issues: Complaints include the vehicle pulling to one side, particularly when braking, and experiencing steering problems such as the car veering to the left even when the wheel is held straight. These issues can affect the vehicle's handling and safety.
  • Door Handle Durability: The Sienna is known for having cheap plastic door handles that crack and break easily. This can be a recurring problem that affects the functionality and aesthetics of the vehicle.
  • Alignment and Suspension: Owners have reported issues with alignment, where the car steers to the left significantly and the ride feels like the wheels are pointing in different directions. These problems can lead to discomfort while driving and potentially impact safety.
  • Engine and Transmission Concerns: Some complaints involve engine diagnostic lights, transmission failures, and smoke coming from the tailpipe. These issues can be costly to repair and affect the overall performance of the vehicle.
  • Dashboard Melting: A known issue with Toyota Siennas is the melting of dashboards under heat, leading to warping and goo-like substances appearing on the dashboard. This can affect the aesthetics and functionality of the interior.
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring: New technologies in the 1999 Sienna can lead to confusion with warning lights, such as those indicating tire pressure issues. Understanding these warning lights is crucial for proper vehicle maintenance.

These common problems reported by owners of the 1999 Toyota Sienna highlight various issues ranging from mechanical to cosmetic concerns. Addressing these problems promptly and through proper maintenance can help ensure the longevity and safety of the vehicle.

TIRES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2012-11-25
  • VIN: 4T3ZF13CXXU
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: ON 11/25/2012 AT ABOUT 10:00 PM, AFTER DRIVING ON FREEWAY FOR ABOUT 100 MILES, THE FRONT WHEEL ON DRIVER SIDE BEGAN TO MAKE A SMALL NOISE AND SMALL VIBRATION AND LATER THE TIRE WARNING LIGHT CAME ON. I STOPPED BY AT A REST AREA AND DIDN?T SEE ANY NOTICEABLE PROBLEM. SINCE IT?S ABOUT 50 MILES AWAY FROM HOME, I DECIDED TO KEEP DRIVING IT AND THE NOISE AND VIBRATION CONTINUED. I CHECKED THE TIRE THE NEXT DAY AND FOUND IT FLATTENED. I FIXED IT WITH A TIRE REPAIR PLUG, PUMP IT AND I FOUND A BUBBLE ABOUT 4-INCH IN DIAMETER. I DROVE BACK TO VINELAND TOYOTA IN VINELAND, NJ ON 12/7/2012 SINCE THE TIRE WAS ONLY 18 MONTHS OLD AND WAS STILL IN WARRANTY. AFTER TAKING DOWN THE TIRE, I FOUND, ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE TIRE, THERE WAS ANOTHER BUBBLE IN DIAMETER 3-INCH. I STRONGLY BELIEVE THERE IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE WITH THIS MODEL OF TIRES OF GOOD YEAR. IF I KEPT DRIVING MY VEHICLE FOR FEW MORE MILES, THE TIRE WOULD EXPLODE AND CAUSED A SERIOUS ACCIDENT! *TR

IT SOUNDS LIKE NOT ALL THE CYLINDERS WERE RUNNUNG. THE CAR WAS NOT POWERFUL AS USUAL. I TRIED TO TURN OFF MY VAN, BY TURNING THE KEY TO STOP AND TAKING KEY OUT. THE CAN DID NOT STOP. I INSERTED THE KEY TO START AGAIN, IT STILL HAD THE NOISE. I DROVE MY SON TO HIS HIGH SCHOOL ANY, WHICH IS LESS THAN A MILE AWAY. AFTER DROPPING HIM OFF AT THE SCHOOL, I DROVE BACK TO HOME. WHEN I WAS CLOSE TO MY I SAW THE TEMPERATURE METER WAS MIDWAY. WHEN I GOT TO HOME, I STOPPED MY CAR IN FRONT OF MY HOUSE, TOOK THE KEY OUT. THE ENGINE WAS STILL RUNNING. I OPENED THE HOOD, SAW SMOKE CAME OUT FROM THE ENGINE AREA. ALTHOUGH NO FLAME WAS STARTED, I USED MY HOUSE FIRE DISTINGUISHED TO PUT OUT THE SMOKE. THEN THE ENGINE STOPPED. THE CAR DIED IN FRONT OF MY HOUSE ON MY DRIVE WAY. I REPORTED THIS INCIDENT TO TOYOTA TODAY. *TR

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-11-29
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 5TDZK23C19S
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
  • Summary: ON OCTOBER 18, 2010 MY 2009 TOYOTA SIENNA DASHBOARD VSC (VARIABLE SKID CONTROL)/OFF TRACK AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS ILLUMINATED. I TOOK MY VAN IN FOR SERVICE IMMEDIATELY. THE DEALERSHIP MADE REPAIRS THAT WERE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY, AND ASSURED ME THAT THE VAN WAS SAFE TO DRIVE. ON NOVEMBER 24, 2010, THE SAME VSC/OFF TRACK AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS ILLUMINATED AGAIN. WHEN I RETURNED TO MY LOCAL DEALERSHIP FOR SERVICE, I WAS INFORMED THAT DUE TO THE THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY, THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT DID NOT HAVE AVAILABILITY UNTIL NOVEMBER 30, 2010. SERVICE ADVISOR ASSURED ME THAT MY VEHICLE WAS SAFE TO DRIVE, AS LONG AS I STAYED IN TOWN, AND WASN'T PLANNING ON TAKING THE CAR ON ANY LONG TRIPS. HOWEVER, I NEVER GOT A CHANCE TO RETURN MY VAN TO THE DEALERSHIP BECAUSE ON NOVEMBER 29, 2010 IT STARTED TO MAKE UNUSUALLY LOUD NOISES AND ACCELERATED UNEXPECTEDLY. NATURALLY, I ATTEMPTED TO STOP BY BRAKING, BUT THE BRAKES WERE NOT FUNCTIONING AT ALL. I TRIED AGAIN AND AGAIN TO BRAKE, BUT TO MY DISAPPOINTMENT THE BRAKE PEDAL DID NOTHING, NO MATTER HOW MUCH I PUMPED IT. LUCKILY, I WAS ABLE TO AVOID HITTING ANY PEDESTRIANS OR CARS BY STEERING UP THE CURB AND INTO A LAMPPOST. THE VAN CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE UNCONTROLLABLY UNTIL IT FINALLY CAME TO REST ON THE STEPS OF THE COUNTY COURTHOUSE! *TR

TIRES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-07-29
  • VIN: 4T3ZF13C7XU
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: LOOSE SPARE TIRE IN CARGO SEATING AREA OF TOYOTA SIENNA 1999 VAN. DUE TO A RECALL ON THE CORROSION OF THE SPARE TIRE CABLE, THE SPARE TIRE WAS REMOVED AND PLACED IN THE CARGO AREA OF THE VAN. THE TIRE IS NOT SECURED DOWN AND MOVES AROUND DURING DRIVING. IF THERE WAS ANY TYPE OF ACCIDENT, ESPECIALLY A ROLL OVER, THE TIRE WITH THE RIM WOULD BE ABLE TO MOVE AROUND THE SEATING AREA AND COULD CAUSE SEVERE INJURIES. I DO NOT FEEL SAFE DRIVING THIS VEHICLE. I DID CALL TOYOTA WITH MY CONCERN WITH THE TIRE NOT BEING SECURED, THEY GAVE ME A CASE NUMBER AND TOLD ME THAT THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO AT THIS TIME. *TR

SEAT BELTS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-06-28
  • Components: SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: TWO SEAT BELTS IN MY 1999 TOYOTA SIENNA HAVE GOTTEN "JAMMED". IT HAPPENED SUDDENLY WITH EACH BELT, AND THEY BOTH JAMMED IN THE SAME MONTH. THEY ARE NOT USABLE BECAUSE THEY WILL NOT RETRACT FAR ENOUGH TO BUCKLE, AND ONE IS EVEN STUCK RETRACTED OUT. THERE IS NOTHING THAT I CAN THINK OF THAT WOULD HAVE CAUSED THIS TO HAPPEN. THEY ARE NOW PERMANENTLY JAMMED, AND I CANNOT FIND A WAY TO FIX IT. TOYOTA WANTS TO CHARGE $350 PER SEAT BELT AND I CANNOT AFFORD THAT, SO THE FAILURE HAS NOT BEEN CORRECTED. I HAVE TALKED TO MANY OTHER PEOPLE WITH TOYOTA VEHICLES THAT HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. *TR

  • Summary: I HAVE A 1999 TOYOTA SIENNA, BOUGHT NEW IN APRIL 1999. ON NOVEMBER 11, 2005, I HAD TO HAVE THE HORN FIXED BECAUSE TO MAKE THE HORN FUNCTION, YOU HAD TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL. IT COST ME $399.35. THE DEALERSHIP LISTED "POOR CONTACTS IN CLOCK SPRING; REPLACE CLOCKSPRING". I NOW HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM AGAIN. I AM WONDERING IF THIS IS AN INHERENT PROBLEM WITH THIS TYPE VEHICLE. TOYOTA WILL NOT HELP WITH THE EXPENSE AS THE WARRANTY IS ONLY GOOD FOR 36,000 MILES OR 3 YEARS. HAVE YOU HAD ANY OTHER COMPLAINTS REGARDING THIS TYPE OF PROBLEM WITH TOYOTA VEHICLES? IN ALL THE YEARS AND WITH ALL THE CARS WE HAVE OWNED (WE KEEP THE CARS FOR MANY, MANY YEARS) THERE HAS NEVER BEEN A PROBLEM WITH HORNS NOT WORKING; THAT IS WHY I FEEL THIS PROBLEM IS INHERENT WITH THIS MODEL IF NOT OTHER TOYOTA MODELS. ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-01-21
  • VIN: 4T3ZF13CXXU
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I AM REPORTING ANOTHER TOYOTA STICKY ACCELERATOR PEDAL. OUR 1999 SIENNA MINIVAN HAS HAD 3 INCIDENTS OF STUCK ACCELERATOR, THE MOST RECENT WAS JAN. 21, 2010. I BELIEVE IT HAS BECOME "STUCK" BETWEEN 40 AND 45MPH. OTHER INCIDENTS WERE IN SUMMER (CANNOT REMEMBER DATE) AND OCTOBER 2009. THE 1ST INCIDENT WAS BRIEF AND CORRECTED QUICKLY BY PUSHING DOWN ON THE PEDAL TO "FREE IT", THE 2ND INCIDENT REQUIRED BRAKING AND PUTTING THE CAR IN NEUTRAL AND SHOVING THE PEDAL WITH MY FOOT TO THE LEFT AND RIGHT TO FREE IT UP. I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE THE CAR TO THE SHOULDER, TURNED THE CAR OFF AND THEN THE PEDAL SEEMED TO WORK OK, ALTHOUGH A BIT SLUGGISH RESPONSE. OUR MECHANIC FIXED THE THROTTLE BODY AND THE CAR HAS NOT HAD ANOTHER INCIDENT UNTIL LAST WEEK. THE MOST RECENT INCIDENT WAS MORE HARROWING IN THAT THERE WAS NOT MUCH ROOM TO MANEUVER THE CAR SINCE WE WERE HEADED FOR LOTS OF CARS STOPPED AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT. I TRIED TO SLOW THE CAR BY BRAKING HARD WITH THE LEFT FOOT AND SHOVING THE ACCELERATOR. PEDAL DOWN AND SIDE TO SIDE WHILE IN NEUTRAL BUT THIS DID NOT WORK QUICKLY LIKE THE OCTOBER INCIDENT. I WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER TO A SHOULDER BEFORE CRASHING BUT IT TOOK MUCH LONGER FOR THE CAR TO STOP THIS TIME, AND I ACTUALLY THREW THE CAR IN PARK TO STOP THE CAR! I TURNED OFF THE CAR AND AFTER A FEW MINUTES, WAS COMPOSED ENOUGH TO DRIVE IT. OUR DEALER WILL CHECK THE CAR JAN 29. THE FLOOR MAT DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE INVOLVED JAMMING INTO THE PEDAL, SO IT IS PROBABLY A MECHANICAL "CATCH" THAT IS GETTING HUNG UP WHEN THE PEDAL IS DOWN A CERTAIN DISTANCE. WE THOUGHT THE SAFETY GURUS WOULD WANT TO KNOW. LUCKILY NO CRASHES HAVE OCCURRED YET! *TW

Negative 1999 Toyota Sienna car reviews

At 68K engine started missing and running rough. I took the van to the dealership and was informed that the fuel injectors needed to be replaced due to a clog caused by bad gas in NY. However, after consulting with an independent garage, I discovered that there was a design problem with the injectors, as outlined in a Toyota TSB. The garage replaced the injectors with special ones from Toyota that retail for $150 each, and we needed a total of 6.

Although I had high hopes for the Sienna, I am disappointed with its performance. The drive is not enjoyable, the brakes frequently malfunction, wind and road noise are significant, and visibility is limited.

Hi there! We've had a bit of trouble with our vehicle lately. Unfortunately, we've broken three passenger handles and have had some difficulty getting the vehicle to align properly. We've also gone through three sets of tires and brake jobs, but unfortunately, none of these were covered by the extended warranty. Just a heads up, we wouldn't recommend buying an extended warranty from Toyota. All of the work was done by the dealer, except for the last brake job which was done by a shop that carries a lifetime warranty.

The engine had to be replaced due to a sludge or oil gel problem. It is important to note that poor maintenance was not the cause, despite what was initially suggested. I have been a loyal Toyota owner for 20 years and have not experienced any issues with my previous vehicles. However, there is a safety concern with the side passenger doors as they tend to stick. While the dealership has attempted to resolve the issue by lubricating the doors, the mechanisms in the handle should be replaced to prevent further incidents. Unfortunately, we were charged for the replacement of the broken door handle.

You made a great choice by purchasing this van! It has good power and handling, making it a comfortable highway cruiser. The luggage space is adequate with all seats up and excellent with rear seats folded or removed. It's a good size, longer than the MPV and shorter than the Chrysler, Honda, etc. You can generally rely on this van, except for the power sliding door (see below).

Positive 1999 Toyota Sienna car reviews

The vehicle has been reliable for the most part, but we did have to rebuild the alternator twice. Although it performs well mechanically, there have been some minor issues that have been frustrating. Over the 4 years that we've owned it, we've had to fix the doors 3 times, with 3 outside door handles and 1 inside door mechanism. While this may seem minimal, each fix has cost us between $200 and $300 due to the labor involved in taking the door apart from the inside to get the handle in. Additionally, the sliding doors have always been a bit sticky. It's possible that the previous owner experienced these issues as well, as the inside sliding door panel on the right side won't stay in place, likely due to being taken apart too many times. Currently, we are experiencing a stuck ignition switch.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with the 99 Sienna. It has been an incredibly reliable vehicle for me and my family. We actually bought it used with 34000 miles on it, but it has held up so well over the years. Even though it's a CE model, it has some great upgrades like tinted windows and an upgraded CD system. With around 182000 miles on it now, we haven't had any problems at all. It's a smaller van, which I personally like, but it's still very spacious inside. You'd be surprised at how much luggage or groceries you can fit in the back, and there's even room to stow things under the seats. Plus, the two sliding doors are a game-changer - no more worrying about climbing over car seats! Overall, if you're in the market for a low-maintenance and reliable mini-van, I highly recommend the 99 Sienna. Let me know if you have any questions!

Purchased new in 1999, this Sienna now has 72000 miles and has never been back to the dealer since we purchased it. I never thought I would enjoy driving a mini-van, but this Sienna drives like a car and I really enjoy it. It has excellent gas mileage on the highway and average mileage in town.

I purchased the Sienna in June 1999 because the Honda Odysseys were back-ordered for 6 months and the dealer suggested premium fuel. Since then, I have driven 54K miles and have only experienced minor annoyances, such as an intermittent emergency brake warning light on the dashboard. The engine and transmission have been flawless, and I get 20-22 mpg all around and 27 mpg on extended trips. I change my oil every 3-4K miles and normally use synthetic, so I was glad to see Toyota recognize the oil sludge problem and extend the warranty. However, after reading reviews indicating transmission problems at 70-80K miles, I am a little concerned and hope Toyota considers extending this warranty as well.

I don't understand why some people think this van isn't good. I've had it for over three years and it's been a great ride. It's so smooth to drive and I've never had to take it to the dealer except for an oil change. I've had no problems with it, but to be fair, I always use 93 gas. Maybe that's why it's been so reliable.
