The Mitsubishi Outlander (Japanese: 三菱・アウトランダー, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Autorandā) is a compact crossover SUV manufactured by Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors since 2001. It was originally known as the Mitsubishi Airtrek (Japanese: 三菱・エアトレック, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Eatorekku) when it was introduced in Japan.

The original Airtrek name was chosen to "describe the vehicle's ability to transport its passengers on adventure-packed journeys in a 'free-as-a-bird' manner", and was "coined from Air and Trek to express the idea of footloose, adventure-filled motoring pleasure." The Outlander nameplate which replaced it evoked a "feeling of journeying to distant, unexplored lands in search of adventure."

The second generation of the vehicle was introduced in 2006 and all markets including Japan adopted the Outlander name, although production of the older version continued in parallel. It was built on the company's GS platform, and used various engines developed by Mitsubishi, Volkswagen, and PSA Peugeot Citroën. PSA's Citroën C-Crosser and Peugeot 4007, which were manufactured by Mitsubishi in Japan, are badge engineered versions of the second generation Outlander. Global sales achieved the 1.5 million unit milestone in October 2016, 15 years after its market launch.

As part of the third generation line-up, Mitsubishi launched in January 2013 a plug-in hybrid model called Outlander PHEV. As of January 2022, global sales totaled about 300,000 units, and according to JATO Dynamics, the Outlander PHEV is the world's all-time best selling plug-in hybrid since December 2018. As of 2019, Europe is the leading market with over 126,000 units sold through January 2019, and the Outlander plug-in hybrid listed as Europe's best-selling plug-in hybrid car for five years running, 2015 to 2019.

The fourth-generation model was released 2021. Following Mitsubishi's entry to Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance, the fourth-generation Outlander is based on the Rogue/X-Trail, which is built on the CMF-CD platform.

Mitsubishi Outlander 2022
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-27
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-01
  • VIN: JA4J3VA86NZ
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
  • Summary: While driving down the highway at 70 mph, my 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander SEL suddenly shut off without warning, causing the entire dashboard and instrument cluster to go dark. In a matter of seconds, the vehicle unexpectedly braked on its own, decelerating from 70 to 0 mph in an extremely short distance. This abrupt stop nearly caused an 18-wheeler behind me to rear-end my vehicle. Thankfully, the truck driver was able to swerve just in time, narrowly avoiding a catastrophic collision. The situation could have resulted in severe injuries or fatalities. During the incident, all power to the vehicle was lost. The brakes became unresponsive and impossible to press, and the steering became extremely difficult to control, making it nearly impossible to maneuver the vehicle safely. This is the fifth time my vehicle has experienced this issue, with the past three instances almost ending in serious accidents due to the car’s complete failure to respond. After a few seconds of total power loss, the vehicle inexplicably starts back up on its own and operates as if nothing had happened. Despite this recurring and life-threatening malfunction, the dealership has been unable to identify or fix the problem after four repair attempts. Each time, they’ve tried different fixes: 1. Initially, a software update was performed. 2. Next, the ADAS controller was replaced. 3. Then, the body computer was swapped out. 4. Now, they are attempting to replace a power distribution system. Even after these numerous interventions, the problem persists, and the dealership has no clear understanding of the underlying cause. They have viewed a video of the incident that I provided, but no actual solution has been identified. The dealership has resorted to seeking advice from other brand technicians in an attempt to resolve the issue, but to date, there is no resolution in sight. This defect poses an imminent danger to my safety and the safety of others on the road.

Mitsubishi Outlander 2020
  • Date Of Incident: 2023-05-01
  • Date Complaint: 2024-09-23
  • VIN: JA4AD3A30LZ
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The touch screen is inoperable so you can't control the radio or aspects of the car such as how the lights, wipers, maintenance, etc. are set. This is a hazardous situation. I contacted the dealer, and they knew exactly what I was referring to as they said they don't repair the system but only replace and it is $3.200. My auto was only 3 years old but had over 36,000 miles (the warranty). Why is an electrical component that controls much of the car warrantied on milage and only 36K. They know of this problem.
Mitsubishi Outlander 2019
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-20
  • Date Complaint: 2024-09-20
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • VIN: JA4AZ3A38KZ
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: I was approaching my car and used my keyfob to open the trunk. As it was opening, I was thankfully facing away from the trunk when the rod from the right tailgate lift support flew off, hitting me in my shoulder blade. It sounded like a gunshot. While there was no puncture, due to my thick t shirt and the rod hitting the bone of my right shoulder blade, the pain was severe. Before I realized it was the tailgate support strut, i genuinely thought I had been shot, due to the sound and the pain. Had I been facing my car, the rod would've gone through my face. Had it hit my eye, I indubitably would have lost that eye or my eyesight. There was no warning. I have never experienced anything out of the ordinary with my trunk door or the mechanisms to lift it. This easily could've severely injured me or someone else, or damaged property significantly. Upon inspection visually, the non-threaded end of the rod appears to have snapped off. The hydraulics were so strong that the 5mm thick metal snapped in half within milliseconds. I have an appointment at the Mitsubishi dealership where I got the car to get to the root cause. They confirmed over the phone that my car is too new to have tailgate lift support failure.

After which the contact observed smoke emanating from the engine compartment. By the time the contact and her family were able to exit the vehicle and move to a safe distance, the vehicle had become engulfed in flames that were originating from the engine compartment. Local emergency services arrived and were able to extinguish the fire. All warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was towed to a tow yard but had yet to be deemed a total loss by the contact's insurance provider. A fire report was filed. A police report was filed with no injuries reported. Latest negative Mitsubishi Outlander car reviews

  1. Jay Quitzon 2025-02-20

    Vehicle year: 2013

I purchased my 2011 Mitsubishi Outlander in 2015 and have been diligent in following the owner's manual for regular servicing. However, I recently discovered that the CVT transmission oil needs to be changed every 30,000 miles, which was not explicitly stated in the manual. Despite having recalls and service done at a Mitsubishi dealer in May 2018, the transmission fluid was never mentioned. Unfortunately, my car recently experienced transmission failure without any warning lights, leaving me without a vehicle. While I previously loved this car and its spacious back door for my older dogs, I must caution others to be careful when considering a Mitsubishi due to the expensive transmission repairs and poor reviews of rebuilds. In fact, I have since given away this car and purchased a new one as we were unable to find a suitable transmission replacement. Please think twice before buying a Mitsubishi.

I purchased this car three years ago and while it has some great features such as lots of cargo space, fantastic Bluetooth connectivity, and good visibility, it has also had a fair share of problems. Unfortunately, these issues have made owning the car a bit stressful. For example, the check engine light has been on since the day after I purchased it, despite spending over $1000 on different fixes. Additionally, the A/C and heat vents aren't properly controlled by the knob on the dash, and the headlights don't feel very powerful. Most recently, the transmission failed at 120K miles for no discernible reason. While it's been a frustrating experience, I'm hopeful that I can find a solution that works for me. I called Mitsubishi and they informed me that the warranty had expired, so unfortunately, it would be an out-of-pocket expense. I later discovered that other people have had similar experiences. It's disappointing to receive poor customer service, and it has left me with a negative impression of Mitsubishi.

Compared to many other models such as the Mazda CX-5, Buick Encore, Kia Sorrento and Sportage, this one stood out for its price, warranty (better than Mazda, Buick, and other 3/36 warranties), and spaciousness/versatility/fuel economy for the price. All of them were good, but this one was the most affordable and offered a lot of room, flexibility and decent mpg. The only real complaint is that the build quality is somewhat cheap. However, overall, it is a very nice car so far.

This car provides a smooth ride overall, but there are two major gripes I have about it. Firstly, I don't feel safe in it when making turns as it loses traction no matter the terrain or weather conditions. Even driving over 20 mph and making a turn makes me feel like it might flip over. Secondly, the A/C compressor went out on it two years after I bought it and again recently. I was told that the issue is due to bad design. Additionally, I think the issue with any Mitsubishi is that they hold no value. Whether that is warranted or not, I don't know. Based on my experience, I wouldn't buy one again and would recommend others to look for something else.

We downsized from a 2004 Durango Limited to the GT Outlander. We've been really happy with it so far! It has a unique look and handles like a sports car. Plus, it feels secure in the snow. The MPG has been decent too - I've hit 30MPG at 60mph. One of our favorite features is the lay flat rear 'bed'. It's a cool truck that not everyone has!

I was a bit worried because I hadn't heard much about the Outlander from people I know, but as they say, no news is good news! I needed a small SUV with a third row, but the Rogue seemed too tight and had a blah interior. That's when I stumbled upon the Outlander. What I was looking for was comfort, great mileage, reliability in the snow, an attractive interior and exterior, and a good price. The Outlander delivers on all of these! I've been an owner for almost 3 years now and I still love my Outlander! It's so roomy and I especially love the heated steering wheel in the winter and Apple CarPlay year-round. I am completely satisfied.

You've had many vehicles over the years, including American-made trucks, Subaru Outbacks, and as an armour reconnaissance soldier, you drove off-road for over ten years. I must say, this vehicle is great for the price point. It handles everything our Canadian winters can throw at it and is excellent off-road. I have the GT trim, and it hauls very nicely. I've never had any issues with pick, speed, or handling. I think this is a fantastic little SUV. As a family of four with two dogs, we all fit comfortably for day trips. The only thing that could have been better is the storage in the front and rear. However, I got a roof carrier, and it's all good now.

Given some circumstances unique to your situation, you ended up purchasing a 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander in November. You did not set out to buy this kind of vehicle, and you did not know what you were going to be getting, but you have been very pleased with it after three months and several thousand miles. Based on your experience, I would definitely recommend this SUV to others in the market.

This has been our daily family car since we bought it brand new in Feb 2024. We have only had one major issue with a leaking AC condenser in 2022, which was quickly fixed by an independent mechanic. Besides basic maintenance, such as tire and battery replacements, and recalls, we have not had any other problems. Even at over 80k miles, the car still feels tight and solid, and there are no squeaks or rattles that you would expect in a 'budget' car. In fact, I have rented cars lately that have not held up as well as this one! The car has always had plenty of room for us, and the CVT has held up well. We have come to appreciate it in city driving, where it excels. The 2.4 liter engine feels more powerful than its ratings suggest, probably due to excellent programming on the transmission. Our fuel mileage has averaged 20-23 city and 26-30 highway, depending on speed and conditions. The only gripes we have had are the bad OEM tires and the thin paint that chips and scratches easily. However, an excellent set of tires goes a long way on this car. In summary, if you need a family car that can do a little bit of everything and take a beating, this is the car for you. If you are in the used market, I would wager that this car is a good bet for the money, assuming the oil and filters have been changed. This is the car that most people would say they really want, but they end up buying something else instead that ends up costing a lot more money. I cannot stress enough how much of a disservice the 'automotive journalist' set have done to Mitsubishi. The Outlander is a fine product.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my 2003 Outlander AWD. I bought it brand new and it's been such a great car! I've only had to do oil changes, replace the tires, and take care of a couple of recalls. It's been so reliable, versatile, and economical. I'm really happy with my purchase!
