Mitsubishi Outlander problems

The Mitsubishi Outlander (Japanese: 三菱・アウトランダー, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Autorandā) is a compact crossover SUV manufactured by Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors since 2001. It was originally known as the Mitsubishi Airtrek (Japanese: 三菱・エアトレック, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Eatorekku) when it was introduced in Japan.
The original Airtrek name was chosen to "describe the vehicle's ability to transport its passengers on adventure-packed journeys in a 'free-as-a-bird' manner", and was "coined from Air and Trek to express the idea of footloose, adventure-filled motoring pleasure." The Outlander nameplate which replaced it evoked a "feeling of journeying to distant, unexplored lands in search of adventure."
The second generation of the vehicle was introduced in 2006 and all markets including Japan adopted the Outlander name, although production of the older version continued in parallel. It was built on the company's GS platform, and used various engines developed by Mitsubishi, Volkswagen, and PSA Peugeot Citroën. PSA's Citroën C-Crosser and Peugeot 4007, which were manufactured by Mitsubishi in Japan, are badge engineered versions of the second generation Outlander. Global sales achieved the 1.5 million unit milestone in October 2016, 15 years after its market launch.
As part of the third generation line-up, Mitsubishi launched in January 2013 a plug-in hybrid model called Outlander PHEV. As of January 2022, global sales totaled about 300,000 units, and according to JATO Dynamics, the Outlander PHEV is the world's all-time best selling plug-in hybrid since December 2018. As of 2019, Europe is the leading market with over 126,000 units sold through January 2019, and the Outlander plug-in hybrid listed as Europe's best-selling plug-in hybrid car for five years running, 2015 to 2019.
The fourth-generation model was released 2021. Following Mitsubishi's entry to Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance, the fourth-generation Outlander is based on the Rogue/X-Trail, which is built on the CMF-CD platform.

Mitsubishi Outlander 2022
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-27
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-01
- VIN: JA4J3VA86NZ
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
- Summary: While driving down the highway at 70 mph, my 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander SEL suddenly shut off without warning, causing the entire dashboard and instrument cluster to go dark. In a matter of seconds, the vehicle unexpectedly braked on its own, decelerating from 70 to 0 mph in an extremely short distance. This abrupt stop nearly caused an 18-wheeler behind me to rear-end my vehicle. Thankfully, the truck driver was able to swerve just in time, narrowly avoiding a catastrophic collision. The situation could have resulted in severe injuries or fatalities. During the incident, all power to the vehicle was lost. The brakes became unresponsive and impossible to press, and the steering became extremely difficult to control, making it nearly impossible to maneuver the vehicle safely. This is the fifth time my vehicle has experienced this issue, with the past three instances almost ending in serious accidents due to the car’s complete failure to respond. After a few seconds of total power loss, the vehicle inexplicably starts back up on its own and operates as if nothing had happened. Despite this recurring and life-threatening malfunction, the dealership has been unable to identify or fix the problem after four repair attempts. Each time, they’ve tried different fixes: 1. Initially, a software update was performed. 2. Next, the ADAS controller was replaced. 3. Then, the body computer was swapped out. 4. Now, they are attempting to replace a power distribution system. Even after these numerous interventions, the problem persists, and the dealership has no clear understanding of the underlying cause. They have viewed a video of the incident that I provided, but no actual solution has been identified. The dealership has resorted to seeking advice from other brand technicians in an attempt to resolve the issue, but to date, there is no resolution in sight. This defect poses an imminent danger to my safety and the safety of others on the road.

- Date Of Incident: 2023-05-01
- Date Complaint: 2024-09-23
- VIN: JA4AD3A30LZ
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The touch screen is inoperable so you can't control the radio or aspects of the car such as how the lights, wipers, maintenance, etc. are set. This is a hazardous situation. I contacted the dealer, and they knew exactly what I was referring to as they said they don't repair the system but only replace and it is $3.200. My auto was only 3 years old but had over 36,000 miles (the warranty). Why is an electrical component that controls much of the car warrantied on milage and only 36K. They know of this problem.
Mitsubishi Outlander 2019
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-20
- Date Complaint: 2024-09-20
- Number Of Injuries: 1
- VIN: JA4AZ3A38KZ
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: I was approaching my car and used my keyfob to open the trunk. As it was opening, I was thankfully facing away from the trunk when the rod from the right tailgate lift support flew off, hitting me in my shoulder blade. It sounded like a gunshot. While there was no puncture, due to my thick t shirt and the rod hitting the bone of my right shoulder blade, the pain was severe. Before I realized it was the tailgate support strut, i genuinely thought I had been shot, due to the sound and the pain. Had I been facing my car, the rod would've gone through my face. Had it hit my eye, I indubitably would have lost that eye or my eyesight. There was no warning. I have never experienced anything out of the ordinary with my trunk door or the mechanisms to lift it. This easily could've severely injured me or someone else, or damaged property significantly. Upon inspection visually, the non-threaded end of the rod appears to have snapped off. The hydraulics were so strong that the 5mm thick metal snapped in half within milliseconds. I have an appointment at the Mitsubishi dealership where I got the car to get to the root cause. They confirmed over the phone that my car is too new to have tailgate lift support failure.

After which the contact observed smoke emanating from the engine compartment. By the time the contact and her family were able to exit the vehicle and move to a safe distance, the vehicle had become engulfed in flames that were originating from the engine compartment. Local emergency services arrived and were able to extinguish the fire. All warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was towed to a tow yard but had yet to be deemed a total loss by the contact's insurance provider. A fire report was filed. A police report was filed with no injuries reported. Hello, I wanted to share a story about my daughter's experience with her Outlander Sport. She purchased it in October of 2019 and unfortunately, she was involved in an accident just recently. Thankfully, she and her co-worker only suffered minor injuries and bruises. The other driver was coming off the freeway at a high speed and hit them from behind, which resulted in the car being totaled. Despite this, I am grateful that the vehicle performed well and kept them safe. However, I do have a concern regarding the financing of the car. We had requested GAP protection, but the finance guy refused, claiming that the car was worth more than what was owed on it. This is not true and now my daughter will be without a car until this is resolved. Thank you for listening to my story and I hope that this feedback can be taken into consideration for future customers.

I absolutely adore my Mitsubishi Outlander! It handles like a dream and has plenty of room for all my needs. The only thing I wish it had was a tow hook on the front. Even with all the snow we get in the winter, I have no trouble driving it. It's great to see so many other Mitsubishi Outlanders on the road too! I've only had a few minor issues, but I was able to get the parts I needed without any trouble.

I had never even heard of the Outlander, but when my wife spotted it, I was intrigued. I didn't want another Honda CR-V or Ford Escape like everyone on my block, so I decided to check it out. The more I looked at it, the more I liked it. It was exactly what we needed at the time, with good gas mileage, plenty of interior space, and a reasonable price. Plus, the unique color made it stand out from the crowd. Although it could use more power and two more seats, I'm still more than satisfied with this purchase. I love it when people ask, 'Hey, what is that? It's cool looking!' Personally, I think the silver color is fantastic. That's my review, and I'm happy to recommend the Outlander to anyone looking for something different.

I bought a brand-new Mitsubishi Montero in 1995 and drove it for 10 years without any mechanical issues. It was a reliable SUV that performed well in bad weather. When Mitsubishi released the Outlander, I was thrilled to see them back in the game with a well-designed SUV that reminded me of a Land Rover. I decided to purchase the diamond black SEL, S-AWC Launch edition. During the test drive, I noticed some hood flutter and informed the salesman. Although I was told it would need a minor adjustment, it didn't make sense to me for a brand-new vehicle that had undergone rigorous quality control testing throughout the engineering process. Despite experiencing some hood fluttering after purchasing the SUV in December 2021, I was able to fix the issue myself by adjusting the rubber hood stoppers and adding felt pads. Now, the hood no longer vibrates or flutters, and I feel comfortable driving even on windy days. If you experience any issues with the hood, try adjusting the rubber stoppers to ensure a secure closure.Hi there! I wanted to share an experience I had with my Outlander. Recently, I was driving and the car suddenly shut off without warning. It was quite scary, but luckily I was able to pull over safely. After some investigation with my son, who is a professional mechanic, we discovered that the fuel pump had shorted out. I took it to the dealer, thinking it would be a quick fix, but unfortunately it took three months to get the parts needed to repair it. I had to be quite assertive with the dealer to get a rental car, but eventually everything was sorted out. I did end up taking legal action against Mitsubishi due to the seriousness of the issue, but I wanted to share my experience with others so they can be aware of the potential risks. Overall, I was disappointed with the situation, but I hope that Mitsubishi will take steps to ensure the safety of their customers in the future. Thanks for listening!

I recently took my Outlander to several shops to get multiple opinions after the transmission started slipping. Unfortunately, the going consensus is that the type of transmission this car has, a CVT, isn't possible to just fix. I have been told that this year in particular was one of the first years that this type of transmission was built so it's very problematic and buggy. My car is at 116k miles and the manual says to change the transmission oil at 120k. Aside from this issue, before the problems started there were many things I wished I'd noticed. For example, the back seat folds down strangely where the seats fold up rather than down. If you're a camper like me and appreciate having the option to sleep in your car, you won't be able to do that in this car. I'm 5'4 and had to curl up my legs to fit. Also, this car doesn't do hills very well, you can hear it really working. And when using the air conditioning, it really slows down the car. However, the sound system, roof rack and back up camera are the best things about it. Based on my experience, I wouldn't recommend buying this car though. Regular shops don't appear to work on these much and dealerships aren't that common.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my Outlander after driving it for 5 months. Overall, it's a good SUV, especially during the winter season when you feel secure driving around. The seats are comfortable, although they are a bit high. The warranty is also great. However, I did notice some road noise and the exhaust system can be a bit noisy. In terms of fuel economy, I get an average of 18-16 in the city and 22-24 on the highway. If you're considering buying this SUV, I would recommend test driving it for a day or two to see if it's the right fit for you. Thanks for reading!

Pros: The Outlander looks nice and has fairly good mileage. However, there are some cons to consider. When accelerating from a stop, it can be difficult to do so smoothly. You may have to push harder on the gas pedal, and the front wheel hop can cause some instability. Additionally, the front wheels tend to spin out frequently when starting from a stop, which I have been told is normal for the Outlander. I have gone through two sets of tires already (rotating them every 6000 miles to try to save them), but I need a third set and I have only driven 70000 miles on the Outlander. In comparison, my previous SUV, the Santa Fe, only needed one set of tires for the same mileage. Unfortunately, I cannot let my 17-year-old drive the Outlander due to the wheel hop. The radio also has some quirks, taking 5 to 10 seconds to turn on and to switch between AM and FM. As you ease into a turn and begin to accelerate, the steering wheel will not begin to return by itself, and you have to pull it back and sometimes jerk it back. I have been told that these issues are normal, but I am considering getting rid of the Outlander soon so that my 17-year-old can drive something else. He has no problem driving our other cars, just this one.

In the event that the temperature drops below 25 degrees, the rear doors of my vehicle seem to be unresponsive to unlocking. Despite attempting to unlock the doors by pressing the unlock button on the driver's door or manually pulling the handle, the doors remain locked. This issue has occurred twice during the winter of 2022 in NE PA.
