Mitsubishi Outlander problems
The Mitsubishi Outlander (Japanese: 三菱・アウトランダー, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Autorandā) is a compact crossover SUV manufactured by Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors since 2001. It was originally known as the Mitsubishi Airtrek (Japanese: 三菱・エアトレック, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Eatorekku) when it was introduced in Japan.
The original Airtrek name was chosen to "describe the vehicle's ability to transport its passengers on adventure-packed journeys in a 'free-as-a-bird' manner", and was "coined from Air and Trek to express the idea of footloose, adventure-filled motoring pleasure." The Outlander nameplate which replaced it evoked a "feeling of journeying to distant, unexplored lands in search of adventure."
The second generation of the vehicle was introduced in 2006 and all markets including Japan adopted the Outlander name, although production of the older version continued in parallel. It was built on the company's GS platform, and used various engines developed by Mitsubishi, Volkswagen, and PSA Peugeot Citroën. PSA's Citroën C-Crosser and Peugeot 4007, which were manufactured by Mitsubishi in Japan, are badge engineered versions of the second generation Outlander. Global sales achieved the 1.5 million unit milestone in October 2016, 15 years after its market launch.
As part of the third generation line-up, Mitsubishi launched in January 2013 a plug-in hybrid model called Outlander PHEV. As of January 2022, global sales totaled about 300,000 units, and according to JATO Dynamics, the Outlander PHEV is the world's all-time best selling plug-in hybrid since December 2018. As of 2019, Europe is the leading market with over 126,000 units sold through January 2019, and the Outlander plug-in hybrid listed as Europe's best-selling plug-in hybrid car for five years running, 2015 to 2019.
The fourth-generation model was released 2021. Following Mitsubishi's entry to Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance, the fourth-generation Outlander is based on the Rogue/X-Trail, which is built on the CMF-CD platform.

Mitsubishi Outlander 2022
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-27
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-01
- VIN: JA4J3VA86NZ
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
- Summary: While driving down the highway at 70 mph, my 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander SEL suddenly shut off without warning, causing the entire dashboard and instrument cluster to go dark. In a matter of seconds, the vehicle unexpectedly braked on its own, decelerating from 70 to 0 mph in an extremely short distance. This abrupt stop nearly caused an 18-wheeler behind me to rear-end my vehicle. Thankfully, the truck driver was able to swerve just in time, narrowly avoiding a catastrophic collision. The situation could have resulted in severe injuries or fatalities. During the incident, all power to the vehicle was lost. The brakes became unresponsive and impossible to press, and the steering became extremely difficult to control, making it nearly impossible to maneuver the vehicle safely. This is the fifth time my vehicle has experienced this issue, with the past three instances almost ending in serious accidents due to the car’s complete failure to respond. After a few seconds of total power loss, the vehicle inexplicably starts back up on its own and operates as if nothing had happened. Despite this recurring and life-threatening malfunction, the dealership has been unable to identify or fix the problem after four repair attempts. Each time, they’ve tried different fixes: 1. Initially, a software update was performed. 2. Next, the ADAS controller was replaced. 3. Then, the body computer was swapped out. 4. Now, they are attempting to replace a power distribution system. Even after these numerous interventions, the problem persists, and the dealership has no clear understanding of the underlying cause. They have viewed a video of the incident that I provided, but no actual solution has been identified. The dealership has resorted to seeking advice from other brand technicians in an attempt to resolve the issue, but to date, there is no resolution in sight. This defect poses an imminent danger to my safety and the safety of others on the road.

Mitsubishi Outlander 2020
- Date Of Incident: 2023-05-01
- Date Complaint: 2024-09-23
- VIN: JA4AD3A30LZ
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The touch screen is inoperable so you can't control the radio or aspects of the car such as how the lights, wipers, maintenance, etc. are set. This is a hazardous situation. I contacted the dealer, and they knew exactly what I was referring to as they said they don't repair the system but only replace and it is $3.200. My auto was only 3 years old but had over 36,000 miles (the warranty). Why is an electrical component that controls much of the car warrantied on milage and only 36K. They know of this problem.
Mitsubishi Outlander 2019
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-20
- Date Complaint: 2024-09-20
- Number Of Injuries: 1
- VIN: JA4AZ3A38KZ
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: I was approaching my car and used my keyfob to open the trunk. As it was opening, I was thankfully facing away from the trunk when the rod from the right tailgate lift support flew off, hitting me in my shoulder blade. It sounded like a gunshot. While there was no puncture, due to my thick t shirt and the rod hitting the bone of my right shoulder blade, the pain was severe. Before I realized it was the tailgate support strut, i genuinely thought I had been shot, due to the sound and the pain. Had I been facing my car, the rod would've gone through my face. Had it hit my eye, I indubitably would have lost that eye or my eyesight. There was no warning. I have never experienced anything out of the ordinary with my trunk door or the mechanisms to lift it. This easily could've severely injured me or someone else, or damaged property significantly. Upon inspection visually, the non-threaded end of the rod appears to have snapped off. The hydraulics were so strong that the 5mm thick metal snapped in half within milliseconds. I have an appointment at the Mitsubishi dealership where I got the car to get to the root cause. They confirmed over the phone that my car is too new to have tailgate lift support failure.

By the time the contact and her family were able to exit the vehicle and move to a safe distance, the vehicle had become engulfed in flames that were originating from the engine compartment. Local emergency services arrived and were able to extinguish the fire. All warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was towed to a tow yard but had yet to be deemed a total loss by the contact's insurance provider. A fire report was filed. A police report was filed with no injuries reported. This is only my second day with this 'CUV', but I can already tell (as long as no problems come up) that it will be a part of our family for at least the next 5-6 years. It's incredibly comfortable, rides smoothly, and has all the space in the world for cargo. We test drove several competitors (including the Rav4, Santa Fe, Equinox, and Forester), but the Outlander was the clear winner.

Vehicle year: 2005
I recently purchased a 2005 Outlander LS 2WD in silver, complete with the Convenience Package. I've driven it over 350 miles around Los Angeles and so far, I have a very positive impression of it. The Outlander has a unique and attractive design with nice lines and a broad-shouldered appearance for a small SUV. People often ask me what it is and take a closer look. Additionally, it doesn't have a spare tire hanging on the tailgate, which could cause problems if you get rear-ended. It definitely stands out in a parking lot full of look-alikes. The interior looks fantastic and could easily have a sign that says 'designed by Kenneth Cole.' As for driving, it has more than enough power and is quiet at cruise. Overall, I'm very pleased with my purchase!

Vehicle year: 2011
I bought my 2011 Outlander used from the dealer in 2013, so I've had it for about 8 years now and it just hit 200,000km. At the time, my wife and I had two young children and a dog. We only put about 10,000 to 15,000 kilometers on it annually. The Outlander has been a fantastic machine, requiring little to no maintenance, great on gas, excellent in snow, and has a remarkable turning radius. The rear space is also great, with a drop-down back gate that is not commonly found. I had a hitch package installed and use it to pull a utility trailer when I need to, and I also installed a roof rack. We still take it on a 3k road trip annually and it never lets us down. On the negative side, there are a couple of minor issues not worth mentioning. However, if you are buying the vehicle for the third-row seating, it is really only suitable for young children under 8-10 years old, and certainly not for adults. Overall, my experience with this vehicle has been great, and based on its current performance, it should be good for another solid 70-100k.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with the MITSU Outlander. I recently purchased one and I must say, it's been a great car so far! The GT model in particular has really stood out to me, and it has some amazing technology that I haven't seen in other cars like the Toyota Highlander or Honda CRV. Another great feature is the Rockford Fosgate sound system which sounds amazing! Overall, I'm really happy with my purchase and would highly recommend the MITSU Outlander to anyone in the market for a new car.

Vehicle year: 2020
Since we purchased our vehicle in the beginning of April 2019, it has unfortunately required service about 5 times. The first issue was a defective engine control unit that caused the car battery to drain, leaving us unable to even open the car. The sunroof has also been leaking, and while it has been repaired twice, we are unsure if it has been fully resolved. Despite our frustrations, we understand that these things can happen with any car. We would appreciate some additional support from the dealership and the manufacturer, but we remain hopeful that we can come to a resolution. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Vehicle year: 2015
We've owned this Outlander for four years now, having bought it used, and unfortunately, we've had a number of issues with it. Shortly after purchasing it, we noticed a leak around the antenna that would occur whenever it rained. Additionally, the backup camera stopped working, and we've had ongoing tire pressure problems due to faulty sensors. Currently, we're experiencing issues with the electrical system, and despite having taken it to Mitsubishi for repairs, the problem persists. While we would love to trade it in, we're concerned about the amount we still owe on it, and we're finding it difficult to find a suitable replacement in today's market.

Hi there! I noticed that my car just hit 60k and I'm having some trouble with the AC not cooling enough. Since I live in California, it's definitely needed during the summer. Unfortunately, it cycles off and on every few minutes, so on a hot day, it can be a bit of a challenge to keep it cool. This is especially true if you have a black interior. I've taken it to the dealer, but they haven't been able to find anything wrong with it. They say that this is just how cars are nowadays. If you're someone who values a good AC system, you may want to consider a different car. Thanks for listening!

The styling and roomy interior are highly appreciated. However, it is worth noting that the hood may flex or move when driving at higher speeds. Additionally, the remote start app may not always be successful.

I would advise against purchasing this vehicle unless you are looking to pay too much for cheap quality. The paint, door handles, seat material, windows, and door and window seals are all of low quality. Unfortunately, my dash started making a noise as if something came loose in there only two months after I purchased it. Additionally, the vibration when the A/C is turned on is quite bad. Despite being the sole driver and not being hard on my vehicles (they are like my babies), after only 6 months of ownership, I was ready to get rid of this one. I purchased it brand new with the stickers still on it, and now, after almost a year of ownership, I can't wait to trade it in. However, the trade-in value is not great, so for now, I am stuck with it. I just wish I had known what I was paying for ($27,388). Please take this into consideration before making your purchase.
