2006 Mitsubishi Outlander problems

The Mitsubishi Outlander (Japanese: 三菱・アウトランダー, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Autorandā) is a compact crossover SUV manufactured by Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors since 2001. It was originally known as the Mitsubishi Airtrek (Japanese: 三菱・エアトレック, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Eatorekku) when it was introduced in Japan.

The original Airtrek name was chosen to "describe the vehicle's ability to transport its passengers on adventure-packed journeys in a 'free-as-a-bird' manner", and was "coined from Air and Trek to express the idea of footloose, adventure-filled motoring pleasure." The Outlander nameplate which replaced it evoked a "feeling of journeying to distant, unexplored lands in search of adventure."

The second generation of the vehicle was introduced in 2006 and all markets including Japan adopted the Outlander name, although production of the older version continued in parallel. It was built on the company's GS platform, and used various engines developed by Mitsubishi, Volkswagen, and PSA Peugeot Citroën. PSA's Citroën C-Crosser and Peugeot 4007, which were manufactured by Mitsubishi in Japan, are badge engineered versions of the second generation Outlander. Global sales achieved the 1.5 million unit milestone in October 2016, 15 years after its market launch.

As part of the third generation line-up, Mitsubishi launched in January 2013 a plug-in hybrid model called Outlander PHEV. As of January 2022, global sales totaled about 300,000 units, and according to JATO Dynamics, the Outlander PHEV is the world's all-time best selling plug-in hybrid since December 2018. As of 2019, Europe is the leading market with over 126,000 units sold through January 2019, and the Outlander plug-in hybrid listed as Europe's best-selling plug-in hybrid car for five years running, 2015 to 2019.

The fourth-generation model was released 2021. Following Mitsubishi's entry to Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance, the fourth-generation Outlander is based on the Rogue/X-Trail, which is built on the CMF-CD platform.

Common 2006 Mitsubishi Outlander problems

The Mitsubishi Outlander 2006 has had several common problems reported by its owners. One of the most frequently mentioned issues is the failure of the automatic transmission, which can lead to whining or rattling noises from the engine bay, and in some cases, may require a complete transmission replacement. This issue has been reported to occur around 40,000+ miles.

Another problem that has been reported is related to the paint quality of the vehicle. Some owners have experienced chipping and scratching of the paint, indicating a poor paint job. This issue has been reported to occur at an average mileage of around 11,400 miles, and it is not covered by a warranty, which can be frustrating for owners.

The 2006 Mitsubishi Outlander has also been reported to have issues with the throttle body, which can get blocked and cause a lack of power, poor acceleration, and bad engine idling. The solution to this problem is to remove the throttle body, clean it with carb cleaner or a similar product, and refit it. This should resolve the issue.

The DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) can also get blocked up, especially if the vehicle is used for short journeys around town. If the DPF warning light appears on the dashboard, it is recommended to take the vehicle onto an open road and drive at above 2500rpm for about 10-20 minutes to allow the DPF to clear. This should turn off the warning light on the dashboard.

One of the front oxygen sensors is known to fail on this vehicle, causing the engine management warning light to appear on the dashboard. If this part has failed, a replacement oxygen sensor will need to be fitted to fix the problem. It is recommended to run a diagnostic check to identify which oxygen sensor is faulty before fitting a replacement.

The 2006 Mitsubishi Outlander has also been reported to have issues with the airbag sensor light remaining on, which needs to be addressed because an airbag fault can result in the safety system not working correctly in the case of an accident. The solution to this problem is to check the passenger seat occupancy sensor and replace it if it is faulty. If the sensor is fine, then a specialist will need to solve any software issues.

Finally, the 2006 Mitsubishi Outlander has been reported to have issues with the seatbelts, which may not retract, tighten, or unlock properly. The solution to this problem is to replace the entire seat belt system, including the belt itself, the locks, and the pretensions.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2012-06-01
  • VIN: JA4LZ81F96U
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: AS REPORTED BY SEVERAL OTHER OWNERS OF THE 2006 MODEL OUTLANDER, WHICH WAS THE ONLY MODEL YEAR TO USE THIS SPECIFIC HEADLIGHT UNIT, THE LOW BEAM BULBS HAVE SERIOUS AND SIGNIFICANT LONGEVITY ISSUES. STARTING SOMEWHAT PRIOR TO 2012, I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO KEEP A LOW BEAM BULB (H1 KIND) FUNCTIONAL FOR LONGER THAN 6-7 MONTHS PRIOR TO IT BURNING OUT. I HAVE PURCHASED EVERY BRAND OF BULB, MANUFACTURED IN 6 DIFFERENT COUNTRIES, OF EVERY PRICE RANGE AND THEY ALL HAVE THE SAME AVERAGE 6 MONTH LIFESPAN. I HAVE HAD BOTH BULBS BURN OUT WITHIN DAYS OF EACH OTHER AND THEREFORE KEEP TWO SPARES IN THE VEHICLE AT ALL TIMES FOR PROMPT REPLACEMENT. SEEING THE NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS HERE, I NEEDED TO ADD MINE TO THE MIX TO ENCOURAGE ACTION ON THIS ISSUE. I AM QUITE KNOWLEDGEABLE ABOUT BULBS AND PROPER HANDLING OF BULBS TO PREVENT FINGER OILS FROM CAUSING WEAK SPOTS ON GLASS. THE BULBS, WHEN BURNED OUT, APPEAR TO NOT BE DAMAGED VIA MOISTURE. THE INTERNAL FOCUSING LENS IN THE HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY IS ALSO CRACKED. THERE IS YELLOWING AND HAZING OF THE PLEXIGLASS FRONT OF THE HEADLAMP ASSEMBLY. THERE DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE MOISTURE IN THE HEADLAMP ASSEMBLY.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2012-06-01
  • VIN: JA4LZ81F96U
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: REAR SIDE MARKER LIGHTS HAVE CORROSION ISSUES AT THE CONNECTION FROM THE WIRING HARNESS TO THE BULB ASSEMBLY. NORMALLY ONLY BULB REPLACEMENT WOULD BE REQUIRED, BUT THE BULB WAS GOOD, THE WIRING HARNESS IS WHAT CORRODED. DEFINITELY A RISK OF SHORTING EXISTS. THIS OCCURRED WITHIN A YEAR ON BOTH SIDES OF THE VEHICLE AND WERE REPLACED BY NEW FACTORY ASSEMBLIES WHICH HAVE A DIFFERENT DESIGN THAN WHAT WAS INSTALLED ON THE VEHICLE AT THE FACTORY. THESE ASSEMBLIES OF NEW DESIGN DO NOT HAVE REPLACEABLE BULBS. DUE TO THE CORROSION AT THE HARNESS, PROPER REPAIR REQUIRES SOLDERING AND SEALING THE NEW ASSEMBLY TO THE OLD WIRES, AS THERE IS NO REPLACEMENT SOCKET FOR THESE WIRES. WHEN COUPLED WITH POTENTIAL FUEL FILLER NECK LEAKS AS REPORTED IN OTHER COMPLAINT, THIS DEFECTIVE DESIGN WITH POTENTIAL FOR SHORTING (AND NO PROPER METHOD OF REPAIR SHORT OF SPLICING) COULD POSE A RATHER SERIOUS SAFETY RISK.
2016-06-20

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-04-19
  • VIN: JA4LZ81F96U
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: FUEL TANK FILLER TUBE CORROSION, CAUSING SMELL OF FUEL WHEN FILLING VEHICLE, THEN TROUBLE CODE P0456: EVAPORATIVE EMISSION SYSTEM LEAK DETECTED (VERY SMALL LEAK) TO APPEAR. ADDITIONAL LEAK OF FUEL FROM A LEAKING FUEL TANK BY FILLER NECK CONNECTION THAT LEAKED FUEL ON GROUND WHEN VEHICLE PARKED FACING UPHILL, ALSO DUE TO CORROSION. REQUIRED REPLACEMENT OF BOTH FILLER NECK AND TANK. SIMILAR ERA VEHICLE (2004−2010 MITSUBISHI ENDEAVOR) HAS RECALL SR−11−001 FOR SIMILAR DEFECT. MECHANIC STATED HIS DATABASE OF TROUBLE CODES AND THEIR CAUSES SHOWS CORROSION OF FILLER NECK AND TANK AS MOST COMMON CAUSES FOR THIS CODE. THIS VEHICLE HAS 142000 MILES AND HAS BEEN IN WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA SINCE PURCHASE. THIS HAS BEEN REPORTED TO MITSUBISHI, CASE NUMBER 1-257323494, MARIUS WAS THE CASE MANAGER, WHO STATED THERE WERE NO RECALLS OR SERVICE BULLETINS REGARDING ISSUES SUCH AS THIS ON THIS VEHICLE, AND (AS EXPECTED) THAT MITSUBISHI WOULD NOT OFFER REPAIR ASSISTANCE OF ANY KIND.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-12-21
  • VIN: JA4LZ31FX6U
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: THE HEADLIGHT BULBS KEEP BURNING OUT. FIRST ONE SIDE GOES. I REPLACE THE BULB AND THE OTHER SIDE BURNS OUT. THEN BOTH BULBS ON THE ONE SIDE BURNS OUT. I REPLACE THEM AND THE 2 BULBS ON THE OTHER SIDE BURN OUT. DEC 21, 2015 ALL OF THE HEADLIGHT BULBS BURNED OUT . NOT ONLY IS THIS COSTING A LOT OF MONEY IN MECHANIC FEES BUT I ALSO GOT A TICKET FOR A BURNED OUT HEADLIGHT SET OF BULB ON ONE SIDE I WASN'T EVEN AWARE HAD BURNED OUT. THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD AND WHEN I REALIZE THE LIGHT IS BURNED OUT I HAVE TO RIDE WITH MY HIGHBEAMS ON WHICH IS SAFETY HAZARD FOR ONCOMING CARS. I HAVE CALLED MITSUBISHI AND WAS TOLD THERE WERE NO RECALLS ON THIS YEAR AND MODEL OF MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER. I HAVE HAD THIS REPAIR DONE 6 TO 8 TIMES THIS YEAR ALONE. SOMETIMES THE CAR IS RUNNING LIKE LAST NIGHT AND SOMETIMES IT IS PARKED AND WHEN I GET READY TO USE IT IT HAS ALREADY BURNED OUT. CAN SOMEONE AT SAFER CAR LOOK INTO THIS. I HAVE HAD THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM LOOKED AT AND IT IS NOT THE WIRING.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-09-03
  • VIN: JA4LZ31FX6U
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: HORRIBLE DESIGN ON PRIMARY LOWER BEAMS H1 BULBS HEADLIGHTS. SOCKET BECOMES LOOSE AND/OR FUSING TIGHT AND BURNS OUT QUICKLY. SAME DESIGN AS SOME JAPAN MODELS LIKE HONDA ELEMENT USE OF H1 BULB AND STANLEY SOCKET IS SO DYSFUNCTIONAL. I INSTALLED SECONDARY FOGLIGHT SYSTEM RUNNING ON OTHER LINES - SINCE LIGHTS GO OUT A LOT EASY IN SNOW AND RAIN. ITS BEEN HAPPENING FOR YRS, I BOUGHT CAR USED.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2012-07-01
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING,VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: THE HEADLIGHTS, BOTH DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE, KEEP BURNING OUT. EVEN A BRAND NEW BULB WILL BURN OUT MAKING NIGHT DRIVING DANGEROUS EVEN WITH THE GLOVE BOX STOCKED FULL OF NEW BULBS. IT APPEARS THERE MAY BE A LEAK IN THE SEALS (AND MOISTURE GETS ON THE HALOGEN BULBS). THE LIGHTS ARE ALSO QUITE DIFFICULT TO CHANGE ( EVEN THOUGH I HAVE CHANGED THEM ABOUT 20 TIMES). THIS IS A DANGEROUS MALFUNCTION AND SHOULD BE RECALLED. THE ONLY WAY TO FIX THE PROBLEM APPEARS TO BE COMPLETELY REPLACING THE HEADLIGHT UNITS PER MY MECHANIC. *TR

  • Remedy: MMNA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the front cross members. Depending on the level of existing corrosion, either a sealing/anti-corrosion agent will be applied or the front cross member will be replaced with a new one that has a sealing/anti-corrosion agent applied to it. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began January 2017. Owners may contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820. MMNA's number for this recall is SR-16-003.

Positive 2006 Mitsubishi Outlander car reviews

  1. Osvaldo McClure 2024-11-27

It's interesting that this SUV crossover doesn't receive better professional reviews. However, I've noticed that many people who actually own one are very happy with it. In my opinion, it offers great value, luxury car level comfort, and modern, aggressive styling both inside and out. I personally have the Limited version with leather, which really upgrades this entry-level SUV to a luxury entry-level. The double sunroofs are also a nice feature. The 4-cylinder 2.4-liter MIVEC engine gets the job done nicely and feels faster than it actually is. In my experience, its handling is tighter and more sport sedan-like than all of its competitors, including the new RAV4. I tested all of them and this one is definitely the best. I have no regrets.

  2. Sedrick Homenick 2024-11-19

I bought my Outlander in October and it has been the perfect fit for me ever since. I was looking for an SUV and the Outlander was the perfect choice in terms of utility and price. It has seamlessly fit into my lifestyle as a weekend and vacation getaway vehicle. It's especially great as a secondary car when you want to give your daily commute car a break. The money you save on gas can be used to enjoy your destination even more. The Outlander is adequately powered for getting from point A to point B, and all the necessary comforts for the drive are present, including a spacious and comfortable passenger area. Four medium-sized people can easily fit, and five can be accommodated for shorter trips. The back seats even recline, although this may sacrifice some cargo space.

  3. Charles Schamberger 2024-11-09

Congratulations on your new 2006 Outlander! It can be quite an adjustment going from a powerful car like the Ford SHO to a more versatile vehicle like the Outlander, but it sounds like you've found a great compromise. With Mitsubishi's road rally experience, you can feel confident in its ability to handle snowy conditions. And who knows, maybe you'll even take it down some dirt roads! While it may not have the quickest acceleration, it certainly cruises nicely. Overall, it sounds like you've found a great fit for your needs.

  4. Jarod Bernier 2024-10-24

I'm so glad you found the Outlander! It sounds like it has been a great fit for you so far. The exterior design is really eye-catching and the comfortable seats make for a smooth ride. It's great to hear that it has been able to handle all of your hauling needs. With Wisconsin winters, the AWD will definitely come in handy. While the mileage may not be the best, it's good to know that the mesh cloth seats are comfortable even in warmer weather. Thanks for sharing your experience with the Outlander!

  5. Horace Raynor 2024-10-15

Your 2006 Mitsubishi Outlander handles like a car and takes corners nicely. The body looks like a mix of a BMW and a Lexus, which is pretty cool. The anti-lock brakes are definitely a plus. Although it's only a 4-cyl, it still has good pep driving in the manual way. The cargo area could be a little deeper and the back seats could lay flat, but overall it's a very nice value for the money. It's sharp looking and handles well.
