2014 Mitsubishi Outlander problems
The Mitsubishi Outlander (Japanese: 三菱・アウトランダー, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Autorandā) is a compact crossover SUV manufactured by Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors since 2001. It was originally known as the Mitsubishi Airtrek (Japanese: 三菱・エアトレック, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Eatorekku) when it was introduced in Japan.
The original Airtrek name was chosen to "describe the vehicle's ability to transport its passengers on adventure-packed journeys in a 'free-as-a-bird' manner", and was "coined from Air and Trek to express the idea of footloose, adventure-filled motoring pleasure." The Outlander nameplate which replaced it evoked a "feeling of journeying to distant, unexplored lands in search of adventure."
The second generation of the vehicle was introduced in 2006 and all markets including Japan adopted the Outlander name, although production of the older version continued in parallel. It was built on the company's GS platform, and used various engines developed by Mitsubishi, Volkswagen, and PSA Peugeot Citroën. PSA's Citroën C-Crosser and Peugeot 4007, which were manufactured by Mitsubishi in Japan, are badge engineered versions of the second generation Outlander. Global sales achieved the 1.5 million unit milestone in October 2016, 15 years after its market launch.
As part of the third generation line-up, Mitsubishi launched in January 2013 a plug-in hybrid model called Outlander PHEV. As of January 2022, global sales totaled about 300,000 units, and according to JATO Dynamics, the Outlander PHEV is the world's all-time best selling plug-in hybrid since December 2018. As of 2019, Europe is the leading market with over 126,000 units sold through January 2019, and the Outlander plug-in hybrid listed as Europe's best-selling plug-in hybrid car for five years running, 2015 to 2019.
The fourth-generation model was released 2021. Following Mitsubishi's entry to Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance, the fourth-generation Outlander is based on the Rogue/X-Trail, which is built on the CMF-CD platform.

Common 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander problems
The 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to transmission failure, a failed air conditioning pressure switch, and a failed fan motor.
Transmission failure is a significant issue in the 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander. Many owners have reported that their cars have experienced transmission problems before reaching 50,000 miles. The CVT automatic transmissions in some of these vehicles are prone to slip, which can lead to a complete transmission failure if the vehicle continues to be driven
Another common problem in the 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander is a failed air conditioning pressure switch. This issue affects some 2013 to 2017 models equipped with 2.4-liter engines. When the pressure switch malfunctions, the air conditioning compressor does not engage when turning the air conditioning system on, preventing the air conditioning system from blowing cold air
The fan motor is also a common problem in the 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander. A failed fan motor can cause the air conditioning system not to work correctly, leading to discomfort for the driver and passengers. Replacing the damaged pressure switch with a new one is the solution to this problem
In addition to these common problems, the 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander has also been reported to have issues with the exterior paint, which tends to chip easily, and the TPMS sensors, whose batteries tend to lose their charge over time, causing the TPMS light to illuminate on the instrument panel
It is important to note that while these problems have been reported by some owners of the 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander, not all vehicles of this model will experience these issues. However, potential buyers should be aware of these common problems and consider them when making a purchasing decision. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent these issues from occurring or worsening

- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: THE REARVIEW CAMERA SYSTEM SUDDENLY QUIT SHOWING VIDEO WHEN I PUT THE CAR IN REVERSE. THE CAMERA ITSELF STILL WORKS AS I CAN GO INTO THE SETTINGS FOR BRIGHTNESS, COLOR, ETC., THE BACK UP SENSORS STILL BEEP WHEN I AM BACKING UP AND THE REVERSE LIGHTS STILL WORK AS WELL. FROM LOOKING AT THE MITSUBISHI FORUM (HTTPS://WWW.MITSUBISHI-FORUMS.COM/THREADS/REVERSE-CAMERA-NOT-COMING-ON.72338/#POST-360974) , APPARENTLY THIS IS AN ISSUE FOR MANY PEOPLE. ONE FORUM MEMBER STATES AN ETACS CODING ENTRY CALLED 'REAR_CMR_PRST' SAYS IT IS 'NOT PRESENT.' I FEEL THIS IS MOST DEFINITELY A SAFETY ISSUE, PARTICULARLY WHEN BACKING OUT OF A PUBLIC PARKING SPOT. I REALIZE THIS IS A CONVENIENCE ITEM FOR MY YEAR OF VEHICLE (2014), BUT SINCE THE CAMERON GULBRANSEN KIDS TRANSPORTATION SAFETY ACT OF 2007 BECAME LAW AS OF MAY 1, 2018, THESE ITEMS ARE STANDARD EQUIPMENT ON ALL NEW VEHICLES. FROM READING THE FORUM, ANY REPAIRS ARE AT THE EXPENSE OF THE CONSUMER, AND MY LOCAL MITSUBISHI SHOPS HAVE NO IDEA OF WHAT IS WRONG AND HAVE NEVER HEARD OF THE PROBLEM. MANY IN THE FORUM MENTION 'VEHICLE SIGNAL CHECK' MENU, ETACS PROGRAMMING, CAN COMMUNICATIONS, CODING DATA, AND OTHER WIRING INFORMATION THE AVERAGE CONSUMER IS OBLIVIOUS OF. IF REARVIEW CAMERAS ARE REQUIRED EQUIPMENT DUE TO PASSAGE OF THE ABOVE LAW, SHOULDN'T THIS ISSUE BE A SAFETY RECALL FOR REPAIR OR REPLACEMENT OF THE DEFECT AT MANUFACTURER EXPENSE? BY THE WAY, THIS CAR HAS NEVER BEEN IN ANY ACCIDENT, HAD ANY DAMAGE DONE TO THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE AND HAS ALWAYS BEEN WELL CARED FOR AND MAINTAINED.

- VIN: JA4JZ4AX5EZ
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I PLACED MY CHILD IN THE CAR SEAT IN THE REAR SEAT OF THE VEHICLE. IT WAS A WARM DAY SO ONCE SHE WAS SAFELY FASTENED, I STARTED THE CAR TO RUN THE AIR CONDITIONER. IT HAS A KEYLESS START AND THE KEYS WERE IN MY POCKET. ONCE THE CAR WAS STARTED, I GOT OUT TO GO BACK TO THE BACK SEAT WITH MY DAUGHTER WHILE WE WAITED ON MY WIFE, WHO WAS STILL IN THE RESTAURANT PAYING THE BILL. WHEN I GOT OUT OF THE CAR, THE KEYS WERE STILL IN MY POCKET. I CLOSED THE DRIVER DOOR. IT STARTED BEEPING BECAUSE THE KEYS WERE NOT PRESENT (THEY WERE IN MY POCKET, NOT THE INTERIOR OF THE VEHICLE). THIS CAUSED THE DOORS TO LOCK. I TRIED TO OPEN ALL OF THE DOORS, THEY WERE ALL LOCKED. THE KEY FOB WOULD NOT UNLOCK THE DOORS. I PRESSED THE BUTTON ON THE KEY FOB TO RELEASE THE MANUAL KEY. I INSTERTED IT INTO THE KEY HOLE AND TURNED. IT WOULD NOT RESPOND. NONE OF THE BUTTONS WOULD RESPOND. MANUAL KEY APPEARS TO ALSO BE ELECTRONIC. MY 16 MONTH OLD CHILD WAS LOCKED IN THE RUNNING CAR ALONE. MY WIFE CAME OUT AND WAS TRYING TO APPEASE HER THROUGH THE WINDOW. WE CALLED EMERGENCY SERVICES AND THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS DISPATCHED. AFTER ABOUT 15 MINUTES, MY UNSUPERVISED DAUGHTER PULLED HER BARRETTE FROM HER HAIR AND PLACED IT IN HER MOUTH. I PULLED A GREEN STAKE FROM THE GROUND THAT WAS PREVIOUSLY SUPPORTING AN ADOLESCENT TREE. I THREW IT LIKE A JAVELIN 10 TIMES AT THE CAR WINDOW IN AN ATTEMPT TO BREAK IT. IT WOULDN'T BREAK. LUCKILY, A MAN PULLED UP WITH A SMALL WINDOW BREAKING HAMMER DESIGNED TO BREAK WINDOWS FROM THE INSIDE OF A CAR SUBMERGED IN WATER. I USED THIS TO EVENTUALLY BREAK THE WINDOW AND DISLODGE THE ITEM FROM MY DAUGHTER'S THROAT. THE CAR LOCKED ME OUT ALTHOUGH A RETAINED THE KEYS. LUCKILY THE VEHICLE WAS RUNNING. ANY PARENT WHO PARKS THE CAR AND GETS OUT TO REMOVE THEIR CAR FROM THE REAR SEAT COULD EXPERIENCE THE SAME FATE. I CAN REPLICATE THIS ISSUE ON COMMAND. IT WASN'T A FLUKE.

2014 Mitsubishi Outlander recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander.
- Manufacturer: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc.
- Components: SEAT BELTS: REAR/OTHER:BUCKLE ASSEMBLY
- Summary: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) is recalling certain 2014-2019 Outlander and 2018-2019 Outlander PHEV vehicles. The second-row center seat belt buckle may interfere with the right-side seat belt buckle when the seat backs are folded down. The interference may cause the right-side seat belt buckle cover to come off, making the buckle latch inoperable and unable to restrain an occupant.
- Consequence: An unrestrained occupant has an increased risk of injury in the event of a crash.
- Remedy: MMNA will notify owners, and dealers will modify the second-row center seat belt buckle cover, install a new warning label to the second-row seat support base, and provide a new warning label insert for the owner's manual, free of charge. The recall began September 1, 2020. Owners may contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820. Mitsubishi's number for this recall is SR-20-004.

- Components: PARKING BRAKE
- Summary: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) is recalling certain 2014-2016 Outlander and 2013-2016 Outlander Sport vehicles. Water may enter the rear brake calipers causing the parking brake actuator shafts to corrode and possibly bind.
- Consequence: If the parking brake actuator shaft binds, the parking brake may not engage or disengage fully. If the parking brake does not engage properly, the vehicle may move unexpectedly if it is parked on a slope, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: MMNA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the rear brake calipers and replace the parking brake boot and lever or the brake caliper body, as necessary. Dealers will also replace the piston assembly of the rear brake caliper. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall is expected to begin March 27, 2018. Owners may contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820. MMNA's number for this recall is SR-18-002.

You have a 2014 Outlander and it's great to hear that you haven't had any problems with it. It's easy to drive and very comfortable, which is especially important for someone who is 6'5

I have always loved Mitsubishis. They are very dependable and underrated vehicles. I have owned many and still have a 91 Gsx awd Turbo. So when I found a v6 gt 2014 for a steal, I jumped on it. It is a great car with all the bells and whistles, Awd, v6 and it runs great. I don't like SUVs with wimpy 4-cylinder engines, maybe if it was a turbo. But I'll happily sacrifice some gas mileage for a v6. I have a 4.7 V8 Jeep awd, which is really too much. So this was a perfect compromise. I also knew Mitsubishi has a long history with awd and even v6 engines, from all their partnerships over the years. What comes to mind is diamond star, and the Dodge avenger, which I also owned with a v6, and it was a good car. I get compliments on how smooth this outlander runs, even at 8 years old and some miles. I added a remote starter, upgraded speakers and added a power sub, which gives great sound. The seats are comfortable, there is plenty of room, good fuel economy, and great reliability. I highly recommend an outlander gt v6.

When you compare any vehicle priced under $25k that comes with a 5/60 bumper-to-bumper warranty and a 10/100k powertrain warranty, along with a back-up camera, heated seats, Bluetooth, roominess, and 26 mpg combined, there aren't many that can compare. With the 2014 Outlander SE, you get all of this and the reliability of Mitsubishi. It may not be a sports car, and it may not have cutting-edge design, but unlike other vehicles in its class, it's very quiet, comfortable, handles reasonably well, and has all the safety features you'd expect for a lot more. We researched lots of vehicles for what we needed and couldn't come up with a better solution for the money. Now, 6 years later, the AC went out and $1000 later it's back in place. Overall, with two sets of tires, original brakes, and maintenance by the book, it ends up being a medium cost of maintenance over 109,500 miles.
-
I hope you've been enjoying driving the car! It's definitely comfortable, although it could be a bit more soundproof. Overall, it sounds like you've been pretty happy with it.
-
I bought a 2014 SE V6 five years ago for my wife, who didn't enjoy driving her 2015 front-wheel-drive Hyundai Sonata in Canadian winters. A few years later, she upgraded to a 2017 Infinity QX60, and we had planned to sell the Outlander. However, I liked the car so much that I ended up selling my 2016 GMC Sierra 4x4 and keeping it instead. The fuel economy advantage, easier parking, and driving, not to mention the overinflated resale of my pickup at the time, was too high to ignore (think pandemic used car market boom). It's not a perfect car, but I'm happy with it and plan to keep it as my daily driver. Let me start with the negatives first: As others have mentioned, it's rather noisy as it lacks sound deadening. I believe this was addressed in later models. It had a starting issue in extreme cold. I have to give it a bit of gas while I press the ignition button, or it will not start. This happens any time it's colder than -18C/0F. Not a big deal, but this means I cannot remote start it when it's this cold. It's not a sexy ride. It's neither particularly nice to look at nor is it in any way engaging to drive. It's kind of soft and floaty with plenty of body roll in the corners. Like other Mitsubishi models, it has poor resale compared to its Japanese competitors. Though this can be a bonus when purchasing used. On the positive side, it's been reliable. It had around 75000k on it when I bought it, and now it's at 140000k. Other than the cold start issue, it has been flawless. It has decent fuel economy for what it is and can tow a 2000lb trailer with ease. It's rated for 3500, but I believe you need a brake controller for that. It's good for trips to the dump with a U-Haul trailer. The only problem is the tow hitch reduces the already limited ground clearance in the back even more. The 7-passenger option is nice to have, but I think in the five years of owning it, I've only used it once. The great warranty is the best in the business, I believe, with a 10-year 160000km powertrain. Mine is still under warranty, though I've never had to use it.As you may already know, buying a used Mitsubishi is a cost-effective option. It's interesting to note that Mitsubishi vehicles tend to take a hit in resale value, but this can work to your advantage if you're in the market for a used one. The AWD system is top-notch and perfect for navigating through slippery Canadian winters. Additionally, the vehicle is versatile and has ample space for carrying gear in the back, especially with both rows folded down. The factory roof rack expands the carrying capacity even further when you attach a roof carrier up there. Overall, I have had a positive experience with this vehicle and have no regrets about buying it or choosing it over my pickup. Thank you for considering my thoughts on this matter.

I purchased this car used in 2017 with around 45,000 miles on it. At the time, the Service Engine Soon light was on, but the dealer on Highway VA7 in Leesburg cleared the code and assured me it was not a major issue. Despite my best efforts to have the car serviced and maintained according to the book, the light continued to come on and off every few months over the next five years. In August 2019, the AC compressor unexpectedly failed, costing me around $850. Then, in mid-July of this year (2022), the engine suddenly went bad while I was driving along I-95. Initially, I thought one of the spark plugs was faulty after having them replaced at 100,000 miles. I brought the car to a shop, and the professionals there diagnosed it and wrote a report stating that cylinder 1 had deep scratches. The cost of repair would have been between $3,500 and $4,000. Ultimately, I decided not to have it fixed and sold the car as-is to Carmax for $2,000. After doing some research, I found that quite a few other people had experienced the same issue with this car. Unfortunately, I will not be choosing Mitsubishi again.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my Outlander. My wife and I bought it brand new and have been taking great care of it, getting it serviced regularly. Unfortunately, after 13 months, the transmission went out. We had it replaced, but just 6 months later, the engine started knocking. It's definitely been frustrating, especially since we were considering getting a 2025 model later this year. Our Outlander only has 163,000 miles on it. Thanks for listening!

The acceleration of the car is quite noisy and it can be frustrating. I understand how you feel. When you had your Honda, it was so smooth that it would put your passengers to sleep. However, your current SUV, the AWD Outlander Sport, is not as smooth.

At 3,000 miles, I have noticed that the mileage is more like 17-25 mpg. Some of the features that I expected to be included were stripped out in the SE. Additionally, the doors are quite light and the back gate doesn't always open smoothly. While the Bluetooth doesn't always work perfectly, I can still make calls and communicate effectively. The wipers spray over the windshield at a crooked angle, which can be a bit frustrating. The remote start feature could use some improvement, as it requires restarting when in the car. It's worth noting that the only comfortable spot for the steering wheel will block part of the dashboard. Unfortunately, I experienced a major mechanical issue just two days after leasing the car. Additionally, I was not notified of automatic payments starting, which resulted in an overdraft of my account. Despite these issues, I remain confident in the overall quality of the car.

I recently purchased this car brand new. Unfortunately, after hitting 35k miles (about 2.5 years in), the backup camera stopped working. I spoke to the service team at the dealership and they informed me that if it was just a fuse, it would still be covered. However, I would have to pay an $89 diagnostic fee. As the backup sensors still worked, I decided to hold off on getting it fixed. However, after hitting 40/45k miles, my radio speakers completely cut out during a road trip. The next day they worked again, but the following week, the Bluetooth kept randomly going into call mode, even though I wasn't calling anyone. I restarted the car several times at stop lights, but the same situation kept happening. I decided to take it to the service team for diagnostics and unfortunately, it turned out to be the entire radio system. The cost to replace the radio (without NAV) would be around $1200 with labor. I decided to hold off on getting it fixed until it completely stopped working. However, at 55k miles, the compressor for the A/C started making strange noises and the A/C went out on a hot day when I had a guest riding with me all day for work. Luckily, the A/C was still under warranty and I was able to get a new compressor that day. I have been considering trading in the car before it depreciates in value even more due to the high mileage I put on it for work (an average of 5k every 2 months) or buying an extended warranty for around $1,500. The extended warranty would allow me to get a new radio (hopefully with smoother Bluetooth) and a backup camera again after a year without. I am the first owner of this car and it will hit 4 years in May of 2018 if I keep it that long. I am worried that the Keyless Push to Start won't work when I am 2 hours away from home. However, a great PRO is that Mitsubishi is the only company with a 100k mile Powertrain Warranty. Additionally, I get amazing gas mileage for a 3rd row SUV. I am struggling with my decision, but I appreciate your input.
