2022 Mitsubishi Outlander problems
The Mitsubishi Outlander (Japanese: 三菱・アウトランダー, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Autorandā) is a compact crossover SUV manufactured by Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors since 2001. It was originally known as the Mitsubishi Airtrek (Japanese: 三菱・エアトレック, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Eatorekku) when it was introduced in Japan.
The original Airtrek name was chosen to "describe the vehicle's ability to transport its passengers on adventure-packed journeys in a 'free-as-a-bird' manner", and was "coined from Air and Trek to express the idea of footloose, adventure-filled motoring pleasure." The Outlander nameplate which replaced it evoked a "feeling of journeying to distant, unexplored lands in search of adventure."
The second generation of the vehicle was introduced in 2006 and all markets including Japan adopted the Outlander name, although production of the older version continued in parallel. It was built on the company's GS platform, and used various engines developed by Mitsubishi, Volkswagen, and PSA Peugeot Citroën. PSA's Citroën C-Crosser and Peugeot 4007, which were manufactured by Mitsubishi in Japan, are badge engineered versions of the second generation Outlander. Global sales achieved the 1.5 million unit milestone in October 2016, 15 years after its market launch.
As part of the third generation line-up, Mitsubishi launched in January 2013 a plug-in hybrid model called Outlander PHEV. As of January 2022, global sales totaled about 300,000 units, and according to JATO Dynamics, the Outlander PHEV is the world's all-time best selling plug-in hybrid since December 2018. As of 2019, Europe is the leading market with over 126,000 units sold through January 2019, and the Outlander plug-in hybrid listed as Europe's best-selling plug-in hybrid car for five years running, 2015 to 2019.
The fourth-generation model was released 2021. Following Mitsubishi's entry to Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance, the fourth-generation Outlander is based on the Rogue/X-Trail, which is built on the CMF-CD platform.

I purchased the car preowned from Chrysler dodge jeep ram at 61,000 miles and there service department told me several times it’s normal and it’s fine, I finally brought it to a Mitsubishi service center and they told me about the issue. This should not have a warranty to be covered for repair it should be a recall , I’m worries the hood will pop open on the highway .
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-27
- VIN: JA4J3VA86NZ
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
- Summary: While driving down the highway at 70 mph, my 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander SEL suddenly shut off without warning, causing the entire dashboard and instrument cluster to go dark. In a matter of seconds, the vehicle unexpectedly braked on its own, decelerating from 70 to 0 mph in an extremely short distance. This abrupt stop nearly caused an 18-wheeler behind me to rear-end my vehicle. Thankfully, the truck driver was able to swerve just in time, narrowly avoiding a catastrophic collision. The situation could have resulted in severe injuries or fatalities. During the incident, all power to the vehicle was lost. The brakes became unresponsive and impossible to press, and the steering became extremely difficult to control, making it nearly impossible to maneuver the vehicle safely. This is the fifth time my vehicle has experienced this issue, with the past three instances almost ending in serious accidents due to the car’s complete failure to respond. After a few seconds of total power loss, the vehicle inexplicably starts back up on its own and operates as if nothing had happened. Despite this recurring and life-threatening malfunction, the dealership has been unable to identify or fix the problem after four repair attempts. Each time, they’ve tried different fixes: 1. Initially, a software update was performed. 2. Next, the ADAS controller was replaced. 3. Then, the body computer was swapped out. 4. Now, they are attempting to replace a power distribution system. Even after these numerous interventions, the problem persists, and the dealership has no clear understanding of the underlying cause. They have viewed a video of the incident that I provided, but no actual solution has been identified. The dealership has resorted to seeking advice from other brand technicians in an attempt to resolve the issue, but to date, there is no resolution in sight. This defect poses an imminent danger to my safety and the safety of others on the road.

STRUCTURE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-22
- VIN: JA4J4TA83NZ
- Components: STRUCTURE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander that I financed through your bank. Since purchasing the vehicle brand new in 2022, I have encountered numerous issues that have caused significant inconvenience and concern for my safety. In the past two years, my vehicle has experienced multiple problems, including: 1.Randomly Shutting Off: Last year, my car began randomly shutting off. The dealership attributed this to sensor issues and claimed it was due to me pumping gas while the car was on. Despite this explanation, the problem persisted, and the mechanic only reset the computer system without fixing the underlying issue. 2.Fuel Pump Issues: Recently, on August 11, 2024, my car stopped working for several hours while I was with my daughter. I replaced the battery at a cost of $300, but the problem recurred the next day in traffic. After extensive delays and towing, the dealership identified a fuel pump issue, which is covered under the powertrain warranty but not the connecting parts, costing $1500 each. 3.Safety Recalls: I discovered that the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander has several recalls related to faulty fuel pump wiring. Although I was initially told my model was not affected, the dealership later confirmed the fuel pump issue. Additionally, the hood of my vehicle was not welded correctly, causing it to flutter and posing a safety hazard. Despite bringing my car to the dealership last year under the original warranty, no effective repairs were made. I have been without a reliable vehicle and have faced significant inconvenience and safety concerns. Given these ongoing issues and the lack of resolution, I am requesting a voluntary repossession of the vehicle. I believe this is the only viable option given the circumstances.
STEERING,POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-14
- VIN: JA4J4UA88NZ
- Components: STEERING,POWER TRAIN
- Summary: The issue with the car involves a problem with the steering gear box. The grease between the rack and support yoke seat has thinned, leading to increased friction during steering. This causes the support yoke to drag along with the motion of the rack, resulting in contact with the rack housing. As a result, a clunk sound and vibration are felt when turning the steering wheel, especially after the car has been stationary for a while. This issue is causing a loss of power and control while driving, making the vehicle unsafe. The recommended fix involves replacing the steering gear box assembly and recalibrating the steering system. The service report ID is: TSB-24-37-001

POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-24
- VIN: JA4J3VA86NZ
- Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Persistent issue where the vehicle will loose all power to brakes, engine, instrument cluster and infotainment. This issue has almost caused 2 crashes out of the 3 occasions in which it has occurred. When the issue happens all power is lost as if the car were rolling in neutral while off, no indication of what is wrong or anything of the sort. It happened on the highway going about 65 mph, was able to steer (without power steering support) into the emergency lane as the car dramatically dropped speed. The brakes were also not being supported by the booster so it was extremely difficult to push the pedal, thankfully it was on a bit of an uphill. Put the car manually into park after it stopped, and by itself the car restarted, although some of the cluster components and infotainment components were very slow to restart. The next time this happened was in slow traffic, once again the car shut off with no warning of any kind. Once I managed to get the brake pedal pushed far enough for the brakes to engage, I managed to stop the car within a foot or so of the person in front of me. Once again, I put the car in park and it was able to restart on its own. Both times it has been to the dealer, Don Herring of Plano, and as helpful as the service advisor is, there is still no solution in sight as they keep changing electrical components left and right. I am worried about the car becoming a rolling ball of metal that I cannot stop one day. I hope Mitsubishi figures this problem out, otherwise its a fatality waiting to happen.
VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-30
- VIN: JA4J3VA86NZ
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: I was driving with shade closed and AC on for around 4hours since 6am from Alexandria - Lousiana. When I arrive in Dallas - TX I decided to open the shade from my sunroof glass and less than 1 minute as I open i heard and noise like a small explosion and saw a hole in my sunroof glass. The glass start to crack. Same moment I closed my shade and reduce my speed. I was 6 minutes from my Hotel. When I stop the car I saw that sunroof glass was in direction from inside to outside the car. Looks clearly that the explosion happened from inside to outside the car. I called to Mitsubishi Road Service and they sent a tow truck to send my car to Don Herring Dealer. After 3 days Mitsubishi called me and told by according pictures it was a rock that hit my glass and broken and they dont have nothing to do. Don Herring Dealer in Texas and Sport Mitsubishi in Orlando both of them assume that dont have any real evidence that was a rock because the glass exploded direction it was to up - showing that happened from inside to outside. I went to Safelite Glass company too and they told the same. As it is tempered glass must be broken in small pieces completely or total fallen inside the car. This looks like when I open the shade and because inside the car was too cold and outside was too hot had some thermical shock and sunroof glass not hold this situation.

- Summary: While driving or coming to a stop, the engine will shut off, the infotainment system will reboot and the car needs to be stopped, put into park if it hadn't done so and turned back on. It does this randomly and because the dealer cannot recreate it, it constantly gets ignored. We are not sure why this happens but it is extremely unsafe.

Negative 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander car reviews
Positive 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander car reviews

I bought my Mitsubishi Outlander SEL about 2 months ago and my fiancé and I are absolutely in love with it! We needed a bigger vehicle since we have a little one on the way. After test driving the Toyota Highlander, Acura MDX, Cadillac X5 and Infiniti QX60, we found that the Outlander was our favorite for so many reasons. The drive is incredibly smooth, the size is very comfortable, and the leather and interior on my SEL is top notch, reminding us of a luxury car. Additionally, the gas mileage is incredible! We are averaging about 28 miles to the gallon, even though we drive in the city 90 percent of the time. Given that it is a 4 cylinder, we think the power is great for the size. It's worth noting that they used the same powertrain as the Nissan Rogue for this vehicle. We believe that Mitsubishi is really underrated in America and we are so happy with this vehicle. We keep finding new things that we love about it!

I’ve been driving full size SUV’s for two decades so I was anticipating a big adjustment. I am pleasantly surprised! Not only is it spacious it has some kick to it. Merging onto the expressway was a breeze. The engine has more than enough power with less trips to the gas pump. And the tires really handle the bumps!

Take the reviews with a grain of salt, but I must say that I really like my Outlander! Although the hood shakes in the wind, I was told that it's because it's made of aluminum. However, I've never felt like it will pop up, even though it happened to me on an old vehicle of mine. The acceleration is great compared to other SUVs in its class, which is one of the reasons why I bought it. While the android auto app is not the best and the remote start app is inconsistent, any other issues have been user-related and not an actual fault of the vehicle. It's always important to read your manuals, people! People always compliment how pretty she is, and I love all the features. I'm happy with my gas mileage, and my current best yet was 37.5 miles per gallon average. My goal is to beat that though! However, if it's under 45F, it has to be warmed up, or it runs at a high RPM and has terrible gas mileage and pick up. Overall, I'm happy with my purchase. I got a nice vehicle for a good price, and I'm really glad I didn't go with some of the other SUVs, you know, the smaller ones with no pick up, that my mom would own.

Hi there! Congratulations on your new 2022 Outlander ES with AWD! It sounds like you made a great choice. I'm glad to hear that the Outlander has more interior room than the Rav4, which was important for you and your teenage sons who are close to six feet tall. It's great that they can sit comfortably behind you. I also noticed that the Outlander is a few inches wider and longer than the Rav4, which is a nice bonus. Plus, it's great that the Outlanders were on the lot and less expensive than the Rav4. I can't believe the Toyota dealer wanted $3000 over MSRP for the Rav4 and that you would have had to wait at least a month for it! Lastly, I understand that you don't plan on using the very small third row, as it seems like it might only be useful for very small children. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

I recently purchased the 2022 SEL Special Edition all-wheel drive and I must say, it has exceeded my expectations. The ride is smooth and the cabin is equipped with great creature comforts, including a large 9-inch screen. Having previously owned a 2019 SEL Mitsubishi Outlander, I can confidently say that this vehicle is far superior to its predecessor. While I have heard and read about the hood jumping issue, I believe Mitsubishi will address this concern. To my knowledge, there have been no accidents caused by the hood becoming detached. Overall, I highly recommend this vehicle for its many positive features and great value for money.

Hello! I purchased my brand new 2022 Outlander ES in October 2021 and was thrilled with it until it started having a mind of its own. Unfortunately, the battery died after only a month and a half of driving the vehicle, which was quite surprising. Then, the cold weather hit, and living in Alberta, Canada, it gets really cold here. It was in November at -22 when my car just wouldn’t start. This was an ongoing issue for two months. The radio, GPS, and Apple Play stopped working, and the screen would just be blank or grey with nothing showing, such as the icons, radio stations, and other options. I booked it in and had my vehicle picked up by roadside assistance, which was a bit of a pain, but they eventually picked it up. I have contacted the sales team at my Mitsubishi dealership on the north side of Edmonton, Alberta, and although I didn't receive the best response, I'm hopeful that we can work together to resolve the issues. I would appreciate it if they could allow me to trade out the car without incurring a significant loss. I would advise you to stay away from the Outlander 2022, as it may look pretty and sharp, but it's not worth the trouble. Please consider other options, such as a Toyota. Thank you!

The styling and roomy interior are highly appreciated. However, it is worth noting that the hood may flex or move when driving at higher speeds. Additionally, the remote start app may not always be successful.

Our 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander SEL has been a great SUV for the price compared to others. However, I was disappointed to find out that the salesperson had misled me about a small piece on the hood that was causing vibrations. Unfortunately, this issue has affected many other consumers, and I will be joining a class action lawsuit against Mitsubishi. Additionally, within two months of purchasing the vehicle, we had to replace the driver side mirror and fix the AC, which was blowing hot air. Despite these setbacks, we remain confident in the overall quality of the vehicle.

Hi there! I hope this message finds you well. I just wanted to bring to your attention that I noticed a shaking hood on my new Mitsubishi after purchasing it. I think it would be great if Mitsubishi could address this issue as soon as possible. It can be quite scary and make you feel unsafe while driving. Thank you for your time and attention to this matter.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to bring to your attention an issue I've been experiencing with my 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander. Specifically, I've noticed that the hood flutters and shakes quite a bit when I'm driving at highway speeds. Additionally, I've noticed that the bottom of the rear bumper seems to have a similar issue. I was wondering if there might be a recall for this problem? Thank you so much for your help!
