The Mitsubishi Outlander (Japanese: 三菱・アウトランダー, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Autorandā) is a compact crossover SUV manufactured by Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors since 2001. It was originally known as the Mitsubishi Airtrek (Japanese: 三菱・エアトレック, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Eatorekku) when it was introduced in Japan.

The original Airtrek name was chosen to "describe the vehicle's ability to transport its passengers on adventure-packed journeys in a 'free-as-a-bird' manner", and was "coined from Air and Trek to express the idea of footloose, adventure-filled motoring pleasure." The Outlander nameplate which replaced it evoked a "feeling of journeying to distant, unexplored lands in search of adventure."

The second generation of the vehicle was introduced in 2006 and all markets including Japan adopted the Outlander name, although production of the older version continued in parallel. It was built on the company's GS platform, and used various engines developed by Mitsubishi, Volkswagen, and PSA Peugeot Citroën. PSA's Citroën C-Crosser and Peugeot 4007, which were manufactured by Mitsubishi in Japan, are badge engineered versions of the second generation Outlander. Global sales achieved the 1.5 million unit milestone in October 2016, 15 years after its market launch.

As part of the third generation line-up, Mitsubishi launched in January 2013 a plug-in hybrid model called Outlander PHEV. As of January 2022, global sales totaled about 300,000 units, and according to JATO Dynamics, the Outlander PHEV is the world's all-time best selling plug-in hybrid since December 2018. As of 2019, Europe is the leading market with over 126,000 units sold through January 2019, and the Outlander plug-in hybrid listed as Europe's best-selling plug-in hybrid car for five years running, 2015 to 2019.

The fourth-generation model was released 2021. Following Mitsubishi's entry to Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance, the fourth-generation Outlander is based on the Rogue/X-Trail, which is built on the CMF-CD platform.

Common 2004 Mitsubishi Outlander problems

The Mitsubishi Outlander 2004 is known for several common problems that owners have reported. One of the most frequent issues is poor fuel consumption. Although this is not a major mechanical problem, it can lead to increased running costs over time.

Another issue that has been reported is related to the engine. Some owners have experienced problems with the throttle body, which can cause rough running, poor idling, or stalling. This can be caused by a crook throttle body, a failing crank-angle sensor, or a faulty oxygen sensor. If the engine warning light on the dashboard illuminates, it is recommended to take the car to a dealer or mechanic for diagnosis and repair.

Some owners have also reported a light clunking noise when pulling away from a set of lights. According to experts, this is usually not a major problem and is caused by the anti-lock brakes conducting a self-test. However, if the noise becomes a big clunk, it is recommended to have the car checked by a professional.

The Outlander also seems to be very sensitive to wheel-alignment settings. If the correct alignment is not maintained, front tyres can wear out very quickly, and the rear suspension can develop wear in its bushes and joints, which can adversely affect wheel alignment, tyre life, and vehicle handling.

There have been several recalls on the Outlander, including a faulty brake light switch that could cause the brake lights to fail, factory accessory carpet mats that were the wrong shape and could potentially foul the accelerator pedal, and a brake booster that could become sticky and not produce enough energy to power the brakes properly. It is recommended to check with a Mitsubishi dealer to determine if the car has been affected and if any recalls have been addressed.

In summary, the Mitsubishi Outlander 2004 has several common problems that owners have reported, including poor fuel consumption, engine issues, wheel alignment sensitivity, and recalls. It is recommended to maintain regular servicing and inspections to ensure the car remains in good condition and to address any issues promptly.

THIS THING WAS VERY VERY CONFUSING. I WAS PARKING SLOWLY, THE CAR WAS NEAR THE 0 MILES, THE CAR WAS AT THE FINAL POSITION IN MY SPOT, AND WHEN THE CAR WAS AT 0 MILES MY CAR ADVANCE WITH SUPER SPEED TOWARD A TREE IN 2 SECONDS... THE TREE WAS 1 METER DISTANT TO MY CAR AND THE INSURANCE GIVE ME A TOTAL LOSS. THIS CAR IS VERY VERY DANGEROUS, PLEASE DONT BUY THIS CAR IF YOU SEE IT AGAIN IN THE MARKET . *TR

Negative 2004 Mitsubishi Outlander car reviews

  1. Ned Smith 2024-09-13

When shutting the doors, the sound could be improved. The mileage is not as advertised. I have noticed some issues with the transmission. The stereo sound could be clearer. While the fog lights are a nice touch, they do not serve any practical purpose. Overall, I feel that I may have paid too much for a 4 cylinder car. I did my research on your site, and I was hoping for a better experience. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

  2. Stuart Murphy 2024-08-25

Although I initially believed this car would be a suitable option for my needs, it has unfortunately proven to be quite problematic. In the past 6 months, I have had to take it to the dealership 5 times, with 3 of those visits being due to issues with the car. The most significant problem has been an engine rattle that intermittently occurs, causing the car to sound like an older Buick. Despite my best efforts to take care of the car, other parts of it also rattle. Overall, this has been a disappointing purchase.

Positive 2004 Mitsubishi Outlander car reviews

  1. Burley Ziemann 2025-01-09

I purchased my car in 2011 for just over 5k with 86k mileage. Since then, I have put on a good 100k miles and have had no issues whatsoever, other than quarterly oil changes. Recently, I have been looking to buy a BMW X5 2008, but I couldn't find any reviews stating that there were no issues. There always seems to be something that needs to be fixed or replaced before hitting 100k miles. However, I just wanted to take a moment to appreciate my long-time buddy, the Outlander. It's a great car in general! Although, I have noticed that my key has been getting stuck in the ignition lately and it needs a little playing around before it fires up.

  2. General Kemmer 2024-11-02

So glad to hear that you're enjoying the car! While the gas mileage could be better (17-20), the cabin is spacious and enjoyable. It may take a little while for the passenger cabin to heat up, but once it does, it's definitely worth the wait. The car handles beautifully and the engine is very responsive when you need it to be.

I have been pleasantly surprised by the performance of my Outlander. Recently, we drove over the mountains in the snow and the car performed remarkably well. I was able to keep up with higher performing cars and even go faster than is safe, which is impressive. My wife and I purchased this car for her comfort, as she preferred a smaller size. Although I initially wanted to get the Endeavor, I believe the Outlander was a better purchase in terms of cost and efficiency.

Driving the Outlander is fantastic! The comfort is amazing and the ride is so smooth. I was able to get exactly what I wanted and needed without any unnecessary extras. This car is truly great!

I love my Outlander! It's so fun to drive, looks great, and has a lot of pep - something I didn't find in the Jeeps or Foresters I test drove. The steering is just right, the brakes feel wonderful, and I have great vision from all angles. I'm so happy with mine!
