2017 Mitsubishi Outlander problems
The Mitsubishi Outlander (Japanese: 三菱・アウトランダー, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Autorandā) is a compact crossover SUV manufactured by Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors since 2001. It was originally known as the Mitsubishi Airtrek (Japanese: 三菱・エアトレック, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Eatorekku) when it was introduced in Japan.
The original Airtrek name was chosen to "describe the vehicle's ability to transport its passengers on adventure-packed journeys in a 'free-as-a-bird' manner", and was "coined from Air and Trek to express the idea of footloose, adventure-filled motoring pleasure." The Outlander nameplate which replaced it evoked a "feeling of journeying to distant, unexplored lands in search of adventure."
The second generation of the vehicle was introduced in 2006 and all markets including Japan adopted the Outlander name, although production of the older version continued in parallel. It was built on the company's GS platform, and used various engines developed by Mitsubishi, Volkswagen, and PSA Peugeot Citroën. PSA's Citroën C-Crosser and Peugeot 4007, which were manufactured by Mitsubishi in Japan, are badge engineered versions of the second generation Outlander. Global sales achieved the 1.5 million unit milestone in October 2016, 15 years after its market launch.
As part of the third generation line-up, Mitsubishi launched in January 2013 a plug-in hybrid model called Outlander PHEV. As of January 2022, global sales totaled about 300,000 units, and according to JATO Dynamics, the Outlander PHEV is the world's all-time best selling plug-in hybrid since December 2018. As of 2019, Europe is the leading market with over 126,000 units sold through January 2019, and the Outlander plug-in hybrid listed as Europe's best-selling plug-in hybrid car for five years running, 2015 to 2019.
The fourth-generation model was released 2021. Following Mitsubishi's entry to Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance, the fourth-generation Outlander is based on the Rogue/X-Trail, which is built on the CMF-CD platform.

Common 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander problems
The 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. One of the most significant issues is an engine recall that affects over 132,500 vehicles, primarily 2015-2017 Outlander models. The recall documents indicate that these vehicles may have defective relays, which can result in various engine issues such as stalling, reduced engine power, and other problems.
Another common problem with the 2017 Outlander is its automatic transmission failure. Owners have reported hearing whining or rattling noises coming from the engine bay, and in some cases, a 'transmission overheating' warning may appear on the dash. The proposed fix for this issue is to replace the transmission altogether.
The 2017 Outlander also struggles with body paint problems. According to reports, the paint is very prone to chipping and scratches, indicating a poor paint job. This issue seems to be a recurring problem with the Outlander, as similar complaints have been made about previous model years.
In addition to these issues, the 2017 Outlander has been reported to have problems with its air conditioning system pressure switch, which can cause the air conditioning compressor to fail prematurely. Replacing the damaged pressure switch with a new one is the proposed solution to this problem
Finally, the CVT automatic transmissions in some of these vehicles are prone to slip before fifty thousand miles, which can lead to a complete transmission failure if the vehicle continues to be driven
It is worth noting that the 2017 Outlander has received mixed reviews from owners, with some praising its value, reliability, and smooth ride, while others have criticized its lack of features and poor radio reception. However, the issues mentioned above are some of the most common problems reported by owners of the 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander.

Summary: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) is recalling certain 2015-2017 Outlander, 2015-2016 Lancer and Outlander Sport, and 2015 Lancer Evolution vehicles. These vehicles may have defective relays that can result in an engine stall, reduced engine power or the engine overheating.
What is the common problem of Mitsubishi Outlander?
Some of the top Mitsubishi Outlander problems include premature brake wear, automatic transmission failure, and a failed blower motor.
Is 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander dependable?
It handles amazing on snow and ice and after 52,000 miles not a single issue with reliability. Just because some liberal expert has a crappy opinion for an Outlander they probably never drove, the cold hard facts are the consumers are happy and I feel the same way. I highly recommend this vehicle to anyone.
Is Mitsubishi Outlander very reliable?
RepairPal gives the Mitsubishi Outlander a reliability rating of 4 / 5, making it above average among compact SUVs. They also note that the 2022 Outlander has lower-than-average ownership costs, frequency of unscheduled repairs, and severity of repairs, making it “one of the more reliable vehicles on the road.”

- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
- Summary: I would that it's too early for my vehicle with 64900 miles already has an oil pan gasket that causes a leak to my vehicle every time I do oil change on time and also that I have a cooler hose of the transmission leaked and for the transmission to be in service every 60000 miles. So I filed a complaint against the manufacturer who is the cause for this model for the same year to have the same problem for having any leaks too early. So I need your help that the manufacturer should recall the same model from this year based on the mileage of the vehicle.

- Summary: Failure of driver side exterior mirror. 3 years after purchase of vehicle the mirror would no longer move in and out. Dealer replaced with OEM quality mirror July 2021. 2 years later (August 2023)mirror now has the exact same malfunction/defect. Mitsubishi is unable to tell me why the failure happened in the first place or why it has again happened. Mitsubishi refuses to take any action to fully rectify this issue. They only suggest again replacing the mirror. As the mirror is part of a side vehicle warning system the malfunction creates the possibility of a side collision with another vehicle. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-11-08
- VIN: JA4AZ3A39HZ
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: I’ve changed the battery at least once or twice within the first 2 years of purchasing the vehicle from the dealer with zero miles on it. Lately (in the past 2 months) I’ve changed the battery at least four times or more. Some expensive batteries as well. In the past 2 months, it’s been giving me problems including stalling on me, slowing down on the highway, sometimes won’t start at all, sometimes it’ll say electrical system service required. Once it said four-wheel drive system service required on the highway as it slew down and I had to pull aside. I’ve noticed some recalls on the vehicle via internet research. It may not be specific to my vehicle, but it does seem very familiar problems with my vehicle. Such as Electrical system: Starter assembly: Relay, Electronic stability control, Electrical system: Software and even with the transmission. I’ve towed the vehicle to the Mitsubishi dealer in Totowa, NJ today. I was informed that my specific vehicle doesn’t any recalls. Service advisor did say there are other similar vehicles did have those recalls but mine didn’t come up on the recall.
SUSPENSION,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-09-21
- VIN: JA4AZ3A37HZ
- Components: SUSPENSION,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: 1. Speed control: Our family outlander has had some issues following our purchase, and I was assured that the hesitation when depressing the accelerator was just a product of the CVT transmission. It’s something we have just learned to deal with given the information we were provided with. It has put us in a bad position with countless near misses over the years when needing to merge, and the annoying stall that happens when accelerating after a stop sign or red light. We have just moved from the Midwest to Phoenix(car only has 30k miles), and the hesitation and stalling is worse than ever. Even with a 3/4 depress on the accelerator, the notion of movement correlating with the amount of gas given is an eon apart. I must also mention that there are times that the car releases like a race car as well, but with minimal pressure on the accelerator. It seems like it’s an obvious programming issue or maybe just a few bad relays. I’m hoping there is a light at the end of the tunnel for this one. 2. Suspension: Our vehicle has sounded like it has had major issues since the beginning, but was told it was normal. The car has always made a loud clunk when reversing after a first of the day start. It is then followed up after warming up with a clunk in the front seats center below us, and while turning in either direction. Hitting any minor bump on a highway while on any mild curve also causes the vehicle to jump a few feet over by itself. It’s frightening judging just how the car will grip after it’s roll. The only remedy is to decelerate under the speed limit during any curve to avoid the situation all together. I’m not sure I’d ever purchase a Mitsubishi again, as I’m only scratching the surface with mechanical defects. I would be happy to finally get some answers on how this was left in the dark so long. It’s comforting knowing friends and family dealing with the same problems. Thanks you, and warm regards! VISIBILITY PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-02-14
- VIN: JA4AD3A36HZ
- Components: VISIBILITY
- Summary: I am the owner of a 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander. On February 14, 2022 at 1:00 PM, my wife and I were driving home along the 405 freeway northbound from our son’s house. All of a sudden, we heard a loud bang and shattered glass entered the vehicle from overhead. The majority of the sunroof glass spontaneously flew off with only remnants of shattered glass entering the vehicle. Upon later inspection, I noticed that the glass was very fragile (easily breaks). There were no warning messages and no prior indication of problems with the glass sunroof. The glass sunroof randomly broke without incident (i.e., no contact with any other vehicles). The experience was tremendously jarring and unsettling because it was completely unexpected and could have caused me to lose control of the vehicle. Fortunately, I was able to maintain control of the vehicle and avoided any accident. We were a few car lengths away from any vehicles, both to the front of us and from behind and there were no foreign objects inside the vehicle that would indicate foul play. Since we are both retired, the SUV is kept in the garage most of the time. It only has 31,500 miles on it. We are reporting this incident to let you know that it could happen again to other vehicles of the same model or manufacturer that could result in serious injuries. I hope you’ll look into this incident as soon as possible. Thank you for your attention to this matter. Please look at the quality of the glass and its proper installation. I went to the Cerritos Mitsubishi dealership on the day of the incident (February 14, 2022) to show them the damage.

2017 Mitsubishi Outlander recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 4 recalls for different components of the 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander.
- Manufacturer: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc.
- Components: SEAT BELTS: REAR/OTHER:BUCKLE ASSEMBLY
- Summary: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) is recalling certain 2014-2019 Outlander and 2018-2019 Outlander PHEV vehicles. The second-row center seat belt buckle may interfere with the right-side seat belt buckle when the seat backs are folded down. The interference may cause the right-side seat belt buckle cover to come off, making the buckle latch inoperable and unable to restrain an occupant.
- Consequence: An unrestrained occupant has an increased risk of injury in the event of a crash.
- Remedy: MMNA will notify owners, and dealers will modify the second-row center seat belt buckle cover, install a new warning label to the second-row seat support base, and provide a new warning label insert for the owner's manual, free of charge. The recall began September 1, 2020. Owners may contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820. Mitsubishi's number for this recall is SR-20-004.
- Manufacturer: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc.

Due to incorrect software, the FCM-ECU (Electronic Control Unit) may apply braking for longer than needed, even after a pedestrian is no longer detected.
- Consequence: If the FCM-ECU software activates the brake for longer than necessary, the driver may react by applying additional braking. The resulting rapid deceleration of the vehicle can increase the risk of a rear-end collision.
- Remedy: MMNA will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the FCM-ECU software with updated software, free of charge. The recall is began October 16, 2018. Owners may contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820. MMNA's number for this recall is SR-18-007.

I was in the market for a 3-row SUV with good gas mileage. Although we only needed the third row a few times a year when our extended family visits us, we found the value for money in this SUV to be incredible. It is an efficient family hauler that provides great gas mileage, averaging 31+ mpg on the gallon when I drive. The CVT transmission is designed for sensible drivers, not aggressive ones. Road visibility is great, and the safety features are awesome. Mitsubishi has integrated some of its class-leading AWD (called Super All Wheel Control) into this SUV, which is a great feature. Additionally, the 84-month 0% finance, 10-year powertrain warranty, and lifetime powertrain warranty from the dealer make this a no-brainer buy. It's important to note that this SUV is in a unique class of its own, bigger than RAV4's/Tuscon/CRV/Rogue but smaller than Highlanders/Pathfinders/Traverse. Some experts may confuse themselves while reviewing this SUV, but it's perfect for those who prioritize efficiency and practicality over unnecessary creature comforts.
-
Smooth and quiet ride. Your gas mileage has been very good so far! It's great to hear that you have no complaints at this time. You mentioned that you bought it new and have already driven 33,000 miles. That's impressive! Overall, your MPG is 28-29, which is fantastic. It's great to hear that you haven't needed any repairs, just regular maintenance.
-
I really enjoyed this SUV. While Mitsubishi may not have the best reputation for their cars (except for the Lancer Evolution), this has to be one of my favorite SUVs I've ever owned. I was impressed with the fuel economy and cargo space. Although power wasn't my main focus when I bought it, everything about this SUV was just perfect for my daily needs. If only finding Mitsubishi parts weren't so difficult, I would still be cruising in this enchanting beast.
-
When I first saw this car, I wasn't sure if I could afford it. However, after taking it for a test drive, I was blown away by all the amazing features it had to offer! I even compared it to other models like the Chevrolet Trax and Ford Edge, but this car stood out with its superior fuel economy and drive train warranty. I've even taken it off-road and it handles like a dream. What really impressed me was how comfortably it fit my whole family, all our luggage, and snacks during our vacation. Plus, it has high-end features like built-in Bluetooth even in the basic model. While the seats are nice, I do wish the rear seats were adjustable as well. On long drives, I can easily get 30 to 34 mpg while driving at the speed limit of 60 to 65 mph.

Reliable and easy maintenance, but bumpy.

Hi there! I noticed that my car just hit 60k and I'm having some trouble with the AC not cooling enough. Since I live in California, it's definitely needed during the summer. Unfortunately, it cycles off and on every few minutes, so on a hot day, it can be a bit of a challenge to keep it cool. This is especially true if you have a black interior. I've taken it to the dealer, but they haven't been able to find anything wrong with it. They say that this is just how cars are nowadays. If you're someone who values a good AC system, you may want to consider a different car. Thanks for listening!

I would advise against purchasing this vehicle unless you are looking to pay too much for cheap quality. The paint, door handles, seat material, windows, and door and window seals are all of low quality. Unfortunately, my dash started making a noise as if something came loose in there only two months after I purchased it. Additionally, the vibration when the A/C is turned on is quite bad. Despite being the sole driver and not being hard on my vehicles (they are like my babies), after only 6 months of ownership, I was ready to get rid of this one. I purchased it brand new with the stickers still on it, and now, after almost a year of ownership, I can't wait to trade it in. However, the trade-in value is not great, so for now, I am stuck with it. I just wish I had known what I was paying for ($27,388). Please take this into consideration before making your purchase.

We have had 8,000 miles on the vehicle and unfortunately have already received 2 recall notices from Mitsubishi Motors. The first one was for faulty door latch components and we just received another yesterday for defective relays involving the engine control unit. If the relay fails, the engine will stall while driving and cannot be restarted. If the relay for the engine valve lift control fails, it limits the available engine power. If the relay for the radiator fan fails, the engine may overheat. We brought a vehicle that we thought we could rely on, but with the recalls, we are now in doubt. Unfortunately, there are no local dealers in our area, so we have to drive 4 hours for a 1/2 repair or more to have the recalls taken care of. We are disappointed in the reliability and lack of dealers. Due to the time we have to spend driving and the expense to get the recalls taken care of, we do not feel that this vehicle is right for us and would not recommend it to someone else.

I am disappointed with my experience with Mitsubishi and will not be purchasing from this brand again. Despite owning an Outlander for 2 years with only 43,000 miles, it has required frequent repairs and Mitsubishi has refused to cover a faulty part. While I have spent a significant amount of money on repairs, I believe it is important to share my experience with others considering this brand. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

I purchased this Outlander brand new with no miles and I like it. However, I feel that it is not worth the value due to its susceptibility to dents. The material used is not of the highest quality and I have noticed dents from minor incidents such as trying to put the car jack back in place. Unfortunately, my hood also has a dent from closing it. I am quite nervous about anyone touching it as it seems to dent easily. I regret purchasing this Outlander as I feel it is too expensive for the quality of material used. I wish I could return it without incurring any costs. Additionally, I was disappointed to find that the 3rd row seat is too small for anyone to sit comfortably. It is not suitable for a family. I would appreciate it if someone from the company could contact me to discuss these issues further.
