2015 Mitsubishi Outlander problems

The Mitsubishi Outlander (Japanese: 三菱・アウトランダー, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Autorandā) is a compact crossover SUV manufactured by Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors since 2001. It was originally known as the Mitsubishi Airtrek (Japanese: 三菱・エアトレック, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Eatorekku) when it was introduced in Japan.
The original Airtrek name was chosen to "describe the vehicle's ability to transport its passengers on adventure-packed journeys in a 'free-as-a-bird' manner", and was "coined from Air and Trek to express the idea of footloose, adventure-filled motoring pleasure." The Outlander nameplate which replaced it evoked a "feeling of journeying to distant, unexplored lands in search of adventure."
The second generation of the vehicle was introduced in 2006 and all markets including Japan adopted the Outlander name, although production of the older version continued in parallel. It was built on the company's GS platform, and used various engines developed by Mitsubishi, Volkswagen, and PSA Peugeot Citroën. PSA's Citroën C-Crosser and Peugeot 4007, which were manufactured by Mitsubishi in Japan, are badge engineered versions of the second generation Outlander. Global sales achieved the 1.5 million unit milestone in October 2016, 15 years after its market launch.
As part of the third generation line-up, Mitsubishi launched in January 2013 a plug-in hybrid model called Outlander PHEV. As of January 2022, global sales totaled about 300,000 units, and according to JATO Dynamics, the Outlander PHEV is the world's all-time best selling plug-in hybrid since December 2018. As of 2019, Europe is the leading market with over 126,000 units sold through January 2019, and the Outlander plug-in hybrid listed as Europe's best-selling plug-in hybrid car for five years running, 2015 to 2019.
The fourth-generation model was released 2021. Following Mitsubishi's entry to Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance, the fourth-generation Outlander is based on the Rogue/X-Trail, which is built on the CMF-CD platform.

Common 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander problems
The 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander has several common problems reported by owners, including issues with the paint, automatic transmission failure, and faulty safety equipment.
Another common problem with the 2015 Outlander is automatic transmission failure. Owners have reported hearing whining noises that become louder as they accelerate, while others have expressed concerns about their SUV decelerating as they drive. This issue can occur at around 40,000+ miles, and the proposed fix is to replace the transmission altogether.
In addition to these issues, some owners have reported faulty safety equipment, particularly with the airbag system. In some cases, the airbags failed to deploy following an accident, but there is no known recall about this issue. The airbag light would randomly come on, indicating that they need to be serviced. Owners also reported issues with the seatbelts, including failures to tighten during an accident and not retracting properly.
While the 2015 Outlander is not the most problematic model year, these issues can be significant and costly to repair. Therefore, potential buyers should be aware of these common problems and consider them when making their purchasing decision.

- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: We purchased new a 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport which has a Recall regarding the CVT transmission causing Vehicle Hesitation when Accelerating increasing the risk of a crash. We began experiencing "Hesitation when Accelerating" along with a "Transmission Service Required Light" in November 2023. Upon contacting a Mitsubishi Dealership, we were told by a Service Rep that the Recall had already been performed on our vehicle and there was nothing else to do regarding the Recall. I explained that the problem with the CVT had not been correctly repaired due to the fact that we are now experiencing the cause and affect issues that mandated the Recall on the CVT Power Train. This is my wife's car and we are very concerned with this issue and the reluctance of Mitsubishi to correctly make the needed repairs under the Recall Notice.

I followed the tow truck to the nearest town and it stalled again at the light and I could no longer go at all, my car locked up and wouldn’t reset at that point. It’s an $1100 tow back home. The CVT transmission really needs to be rechecked and recalled. I’ve found too many issues and the same complaints but can’t find a recall on it at all.

I could hear the engine responding but the car wouldn’t move. When it did start to move forward slowly it was shaking very hard and I was only able to get 10 miles an hour. I had to be towed. And I kept thinking what if I was on the highway that day where the speed limit is 75mph.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-02-01
- VIN: 4A4AP3AU8FE
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is having problems shifting and accelerating. There is a Transmission service needed light that comes on the dash when turned on. Recently it would not go over 40 - 45 MPH, and continued to go slower. I had to turn the car off and back on which helped a little. I have taken the vehicle to the dealership and they confirmed the faulty transmission and they gave me a printed quote for a new transmission. The mileage is at 101162 and the main problem is when I try to reach 65 MPH speed I feel the transmission goes back to a lower speed so I always stock with 40 - 45 MPH and so hard to accelerate again. we own another 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport with 196k miles on it and never faced any transmission issues we always change the J4 fluid and the filter on time. for sure there's something wrong with this year's model (2015) from the manufacturer because our 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport with 196k miles is still sharp.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

- VIN: 4A4AR4AU3FE
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: My 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport transmission failed at 45,000 miles. I had my car diagnosed and was told I needed a new transmission. In addition, my safety was put at risk because my vehicle would not accelerate at a traffic light when needed to go. It would also not get up to speed when merging into the highway and it would not maintain the speed limit while driving. This was a very dangerous situation for me. I was not able to accelerate at stop lights, which could have caused me to get hit from behind. In addition to this, I was unable to maintain a safe speed on the highway. My car would only get up to 40 miles per hour when the speed limit would be 60 to 70 miles per hour. Furthermore, my car was taken to the Mitsubishi dealership service center and was inspected. I was told that I needed a new transmission. Lastly, the day before I took my car in to get diagnosed the serve light on my car came on and said, “Service Transmission Required.”

- VIN: 4A4AP4AU4FE
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
- Summary: My 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is having problems shifting and accelerating. There is a Transmission service needed light that comes on the dash when turned on. A few months ago I had to start manually shifting which barely got me by. Recently it would not go over 25 MPH, and continued to go slower and slower until it stopped and would not accelerate at all. I have had to drive on the far right of the road with my hazards on and barely made it from A to B while cars zoomed past me. I had to turn the car off and back on which helped a little. I feel like when it is low on gas, that also makes it worse? I have taken the vehicle to the dealership that sold it to me who confirmed the faulty transmission and they gave me a printed quote for a new transmission. The mileage is at 89,811 and I've had it for almost 2 years. I first started noticing issues shortly after purchase when it would shake when idle once in a while or would have a hard time accelerating after stopping. The first time it would not accelerate was about a year ago. I no longer can rely on this vehicle for transportation.

This has been our daily family car since we bought it brand new in Feb 2024. We have only had one major issue with a leaking AC condenser in 2022, which was quickly fixed by an independent mechanic. Besides basic maintenance, such as tire and battery replacements, and recalls, we have not had any other problems. Even at over 80k miles, the car still feels tight and solid, and there are no squeaks or rattles that you would expect in a 'budget' car. In fact, I have rented cars lately that have not held up as well as this one! The car has always had plenty of room for us, and the CVT has held up well. We have come to appreciate it in city driving, where it excels. The 2.4 liter engine feels more powerful than its ratings suggest, probably due to excellent programming on the transmission. Our fuel mileage has averaged 20-23 city and 26-30 highway, depending on speed and conditions. The only gripes we have had are the bad OEM tires and the thin paint that chips and scratches easily. However, an excellent set of tires goes a long way on this car. In summary, if you need a family car that can do a little bit of everything and take a beating, this is the car for you. If you are in the used market, I would wager that this car is a good bet for the money, assuming the oil and filters have been changed. This is the car that most people would say they really want, but they end up buying something else instead that ends up costing a lot more money. I cannot stress enough how much of a disservice the 'automotive journalist' set have done to Mitsubishi. The Outlander is a fine product.

Given some circumstances unique to your situation, you ended up purchasing a 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander in November. You did not set out to buy this kind of vehicle, and you did not know what you were going to be getting, but you have been very pleased with it after three months and several thousand miles. Based on your experience, I would definitely recommend this SUV to others in the market.

We purchased this car with a salvage title and about 4k miles on it. We spent around 10k out the door and it only had 9k miles on it. Although it was a flood vehicle, it had been refurbished and still smelled like a new car. Before purchasing it, we test drove a used one with equivalent miles to ensure everything was on the up and up. When we picked up this one, we fell in love with its burnt orange color and all the bells and whistles it came with, such as heated seats, GPS, and a back-up camera. The car has a solid feel to it and we are very happy with its performance. Our previous car was a 2006 Mazda 5, so there wasn't much difference in terms of performance. Yes, it's a 4-banger and not designed for drag racing, but in small town Texas, it's just fine. We routinely get 26-28 mpg when we decide to drive the speed limit, otherwise it sits steady at 25 mpg, which is still better than our much smaller Mazda 5. The seats are great and although the back is small, that's to be expected. We love the push start and onboard computer stuff. After about 10 months of owning it, we still love this car. It has great gas mileage and good comfort, and we have all the bells and whistles, such as a back-up camera and GPS. The GPS is cumbersome and we hardly ever use it, as the phone is easier for us, but the screen is nice for settings, music info, etc. We haven't had a lick of trouble out of it. About 20k miles later, we still haven't had any trouble with it, except for a crack in the windshield, which is hardly the car's fault. The only thing we're not fans of is how the engine sounds, but that's just because we like the sound of a V8. We're very happy with it though. After driving it for many years, we decided to get rid of the car, not because it's bad, but because we found a great deal on a nice Buick Envision. The only thing that ever broke on us was a starter. The road noise was perhaps a bit bothersome, but it served us well for many years.Which was a pain to replace. But other than that, the car was dependable.
-
This car is the best value for your money. If you're unsure about the exterior and interior design compared to its competitors, I recommend checking out this car in person. It may surprise you. I have personal experience with Mitsubishi engineering, as my previous car was a Mitsu Galant with over 220k miles and everything original intact. As long as you keep up with regular maintenance and avoid submerging it under water or hitting deep potholes at high speeds, this vehicle should be reliable. While you should never have to rely on their warranty, it's nice to have as a cushion for peace of mind.

I have always loved Mitsubishis. They are very dependable and underrated vehicles. I have owned many and still have a 91 Gsx awd Turbo. So when I found a v6 gt 2014 for a steal, I jumped on it. It is a great car with all the bells and whistles, Awd, v6 and it runs great. I don't like SUVs with wimpy 4-cylinder engines, maybe if it was a turbo. But I'll happily sacrifice some gas mileage for a v6. I have a 4.7 V8 Jeep awd, which is really too much. So this was a perfect compromise. I also knew Mitsubishi has a long history with awd and even v6 engines, from all their partnerships over the years. What comes to mind is diamond star, and the Dodge avenger, which I also owned with a v6, and it was a good car. I get compliments on how smooth this outlander runs, even at 8 years old and some miles. I added a remote starter, upgraded speakers and added a power sub, which gives great sound. The seats are comfortable, there is plenty of room, good fuel economy, and great reliability. I highly recommend an outlander gt v6.

This car provides a smooth ride overall, but there are two major gripes I have about it. Firstly, I don't feel safe in it when making turns as it loses traction no matter the terrain or weather conditions. Even driving over 20 mph and making a turn makes me feel like it might flip over. Secondly, the A/C compressor went out on it two years after I bought it and again recently. I was told that the issue is due to bad design. Additionally, I think the issue with any Mitsubishi is that they hold no value. Whether that is warranted or not, I don't know. Based on my experience, I wouldn't buy one again and would recommend others to look for something else.

We've owned this Outlander for four years now, having bought it used, and unfortunately, we've had a number of issues with it. Shortly after purchasing it, we noticed a leak around the antenna that would occur whenever it rained. Additionally, the backup camera stopped working, and we've had ongoing tire pressure problems due to faulty sensors. Currently, we're experiencing issues with the electrical system, and despite having taken it to Mitsubishi for repairs, the problem persists. While we would love to trade it in, we're concerned about the amount we still owe on it, and we're finding it difficult to find a suitable replacement in today's market.

The acceleration of the car is quite noisy and it can be frustrating. I understand how you feel. When you had your Honda, it was so smooth that it would put your passengers to sleep. However, your current SUV, the AWD Outlander Sport, is not as smooth.

I recently purchased this car brand new. Unfortunately, after hitting 35k miles (about 2.5 years in), the backup camera stopped working. I spoke to the service team at the dealership and they informed me that if it was just a fuse, it would still be covered. However, I would have to pay an $89 diagnostic fee. As the backup sensors still worked, I decided to hold off on getting it fixed. However, after hitting 40/45k miles, my radio speakers completely cut out during a road trip. The next day they worked again, but the following week, the Bluetooth kept randomly going into call mode, even though I wasn't calling anyone. I restarted the car several times at stop lights, but the same situation kept happening. I decided to take it to the service team for diagnostics and unfortunately, it turned out to be the entire radio system. The cost to replace the radio (without NAV) would be around $1200 with labor. I decided to hold off on getting it fixed until it completely stopped working. However, at 55k miles, the compressor for the A/C started making strange noises and the A/C went out on a hot day when I had a guest riding with me all day for work. Luckily, the A/C was still under warranty and I was able to get a new compressor that day. I have been considering trading in the car before it depreciates in value even more due to the high mileage I put on it for work (an average of 5k every 2 months) or buying an extended warranty for around $1,500. The extended warranty would allow me to get a new radio (hopefully with smoother Bluetooth) and a backup camera again after a year without. I am the first owner of this car and it will hit 4 years in May of 2018 if I keep it that long. I am worried that the Keyless Push to Start won't work when I am 2 hours away from home. However, a great PRO is that Mitsubishi is the only company with a 100k mile Powertrain Warranty. Additionally, I get amazing gas mileage for a 3rd row SUV. I am struggling with my decision, but I appreciate your input.

The issues I experienced with my recent car import were unprecedented. The dealer delivered the car with all four tires over-inflated at 45 PSI pressure, causing the SUV to have an extremely hard ride over bumps and making it difficult to control. Despite this being my first car with TPMS, I did not think to check the tire pressure as I assumed the system would monitor for over-inflation as well. However, I later learned that some foreign manufacturers over-inflate to guarantee that the tires will not go flat in transit, and it is the dealer's responsibility to set them correctly on delivery. The dealer corrected the tire pressure and inspected the chassis, but had to reset the wheel alignment. The second issue was the odor of coolant around the front of the vehicle when it gets hot, which persisted for over a year. The third and most serious problem was the A/C blowing hot air when the ambient temperature was 95 or greater and the vehicle was at idle. Despite my attempts to resolve this issue with the dealer, they have not been able to duplicate the conditions for the A/C failure. I reached out to another Mitsubishi dealer in St. Petersburg, Fl. who reported no issues with vehicles coming in for this condition.I received a very good price on this vehicle with a 6-year no-interest loan from Mitsubishi. It was a great deal.
