The Mitsubishi Outlander (Japanese: 三菱・アウトランダー, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Autorandā) is a compact crossover SUV manufactured by Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors since 2001. It was originally known as the Mitsubishi Airtrek (Japanese: 三菱・エアトレック, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Eatorekku) when it was introduced in Japan.

The original Airtrek name was chosen to "describe the vehicle's ability to transport its passengers on adventure-packed journeys in a 'free-as-a-bird' manner", and was "coined from Air and Trek to express the idea of footloose, adventure-filled motoring pleasure." The Outlander nameplate which replaced it evoked a "feeling of journeying to distant, unexplored lands in search of adventure."

The second generation of the vehicle was introduced in 2006 and all markets including Japan adopted the Outlander name, although production of the older version continued in parallel. It was built on the company's GS platform, and used various engines developed by Mitsubishi, Volkswagen, and PSA Peugeot Citroën. PSA's Citroën C-Crosser and Peugeot 4007, which were manufactured by Mitsubishi in Japan, are badge engineered versions of the second generation Outlander. Global sales achieved the 1.5 million unit milestone in October 2016, 15 years after its market launch.

As part of the third generation line-up, Mitsubishi launched in January 2013 a plug-in hybrid model called Outlander PHEV. As of January 2022, global sales totaled about 300,000 units, and according to JATO Dynamics, the Outlander PHEV is the world's all-time best selling plug-in hybrid since December 2018. As of 2019, Europe is the leading market with over 126,000 units sold through January 2019, and the Outlander plug-in hybrid listed as Europe's best-selling plug-in hybrid car for five years running, 2015 to 2019.

The fourth-generation model was released 2021. Following Mitsubishi's entry to Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance, the fourth-generation Outlander is based on the Rogue/X-Trail, which is built on the CMF-CD platform.

Common 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander problems

The Mitsubishi Outlander 2013 is known for several common problems that have been reported by owners. These issues range from mechanical faults to electrical problems and recalls.

  1. Door latches: Some 2013 Mitsubishi Outlanders have been recalled due to defective door latches that can cause the affected door to swing open while the vehicle is moving . The repair consists of replacing all four door latches with new improved ones in the affected vehicles.
  2. Engine control relay, valve lift control relay, and radiator fan relay: Some 2015 to 2017 models have been recalled due to defective engine control relay, valve lift control relay, and radiator fan relay that can cause the engine to stall or not start . The repair consists of replacing all three relays with new improved ones in the affected vehicles.
  3. Rear brake caliper automatic adjuster mechanism: Some 2013 to 2016 models have been recalled due to the automatic adjuster mechanism in the rear brake calipers being prone to rust, which can cause the automatic adjusters not to work and the parking brake not to engage . The repair consists of removing the rust accumulation, lubricating the contact points, installing a new rubber boot and a new bracket.
  4. Air conditioning system pressure switch: Some 2013 to 2017 models equipped with a 2.4-liter engine have been reported to have a faulty air conditioning system pressure switch that can cause the air conditioning compressor not to engage when turning the air conditioning system on . Replacing the damaged pressure switch with a new one solves the problem.
  5. CVT automatic transmission: Some of these vehicles are prone to slip before 50,000 miles, and if the vehicle continues to be driven, it can lead to a complete transmission failure . Regularly inspecting the transmission fluid level and changing the fluid during recommended intervals can prevent these problems.
  6. Front sway bar and links: Some of these vehicles tend to experience rapid wear, causing suspension rattling noises when driven on dirt roads or when driving over bumps . Replacing the worn sway bar and links with new ones solves the problem.
  7. CV boots: The CV boots are prone to tear over time, causing dirt and water to enter and cause damage to the CV joint . Replacing the damaged CV joint and installing a new boot or replacing the complete CV axle assembly solves the problem.
  8. AC compressor: Some of these vehicles are prone to experience premature failure, causing the air conditioning system not to blow cold air . Evacuating the AC system, replacing the damaged AC compressor and related parts with new ones, and recharging the AC system solves the problem.
  9. Exterior paint: The exterior paint in some of these vehicles tends to chip easily .
  10. TPMS sensors: The batteries inside the TPMS sensors tend to lose their charge over time, causing the TPMS light to illuminate on the instrument panel . Replacing the old TPMS sensors with new ones and programming them to the vehicle solves the problem.

In addition to these common problems, the 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander has also been reported to have issues with the fuel system, where there may be a problem with a connection that could allow fuel to leak out of examples constructed from 21 July to 12 September 2015.

When buying a used Mitsubishi Outlander 2013, it is essential to check for these common problems and ensure that the vehicle has been well cared for. Look under the bonnet and boot carpet for signs of repaired crash damage, and insist on a full service history. If the car has been used for towing, check for any unusual noises from the four-wheel-drive system. If the vehicle is a PHEV built between July and September 2015, ensure that it has undergone remedial work to fix a potentially loose fuel pipe as part of a recall.

  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 4A4AR3AU2DE
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,ENGINE
  • Summary: In 2020 I got a recall for engine support from Mitsubishi. We took it in and told me that the support was find that I didn’t need to be replace even tho the recall called for it. They ended up putting rust paint on the support. 4 weeks ago that part broke on my wife when she was driving down the road. The steering wheel was taken out of my wife’s hand while driving. She was able to get the off the road safely. But sprained her wrist. When I found the broken part on the car. I call Mitsubishi themself. When I reported these issue, I was told that someone would be coming to my house to look at the car. I signed a form for them to do that. And for the to read the computer on my car. That was 4 weeks ago. I have emailed them and called them. And no one knows what I’m talking about our replying to my email. And on top of it all we are missing work, at least one day a week because of this.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-08
  • VIN: JA4JT3AW5DU
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: On Dec 8,2023 our mitsubishi outlander shut off while being driven. When this occurred multiple warning lights come on including, service engine immediately, engine overheating (which it was not) and multiple other lights. It was towed to the dealership where they told us the ECU is bad. Mitsubishi no longer makes the part. They have also told us this is the 3rd vehicle in the last month with the same issue. Car had no power/electrical /engine issues prior to this event. Mitsubishi is offering no solution to fix the issue. Luckily when the car shut down we were driving at a low speed in a neighborhood. If this had happened on the freeway it could have been very dangerous. We now have no car, no possibility of repair and no answers to why this happened without warning.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-04-09
  • VIN: 4A4AP3AU8DE
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: My electrical system and/or computer brain is not operating properly. About a year and 1/2 ago the low beam passenger light stopped working. I had the bulb replaced at Walmart. 2 months later it went out again. Walmart checked and said the bulb was not the problem so I went to Firestone and was told the wiring was melted. Firestone said my options were to replace the entire harness or pig tail the low beam. I opted for the pig tail. A few months later I had issues with slow starts as if my battery was being drained. A few weeks after that my drivers side low beam started working intermittently. Then went out completely. I went to Gillman dealership in Schertz, TX (330 miles from my home) who said the bulb needed to be replaced which they did. A month later the drivers low beam is out again. Firestone says the wiring has melted on that side too. This time I asked them not to fix it because I wanted to go back to the dealership to repair. 1 week later my battery died twice and the passenger low beam has stopped working again. A mechanic advised that a few years ago he worked on a 2012 Mitsubishi with the same issues and ended up totaling it out because the car’s computer was not modulating voltage properly. He said that car’s computer was not reading the codes correctly and was outputting voltages that did not match the Outlanders configuration. I was told there is a recall for this already. I wanted information on this before contacting the Texas State Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Office.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-12-26
  • VIN: 4A4AP3AU2DE
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: hello: i purchased this vehicle last nov. the rear hatch was opening fine," but after a couple of months it has stopped and the only way to open it," is from the lever on the inside. you have to use a screw driver or prying tool of some sort to remove the cover in order to get to the lever and you have to lay the back seats down and crawl back there to get to this. i've spoken to other owners who have the same issue. they've had to replace either and or both the actuator and the handle tailgate lock release mechanism. the handle tailgate lock release mechanism is electrical and is susceptible to water getting into it and corrodes the electrical parts. it sits mostly flush one the outside of the hatch where water can get too it. i feel this is a safety issue incase of an accident or emergency if it is imperative to gain access. also the design of the so called emergency release lever is terrible. some people might not have a screw driver or something to pry with in order to remove the cover in order to gain access to the release lever. in my opinion (1)the emergency lever needs to be redisgned and have easier access to it.(2) replace the acutator and or the handle tailgate lock release. it could cost owners up tp $400 to replace these item at a dealership," unless they would want to tackle it themselves. i feel it's worth looking into. thankyou for your time and any help.

SUSPENSION,WHEELS,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-03-30
  • VIN: 4a4ap4au8de
  • Components: SUSPENSION,WHEELS,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: My vehicle has had over 10 recalls but Mitsubishi has refused to properly fix any of the problems. I will attach a photo of the control arms and certain parts and recalls THEY cleared, and sent me on my way with. Now there is full suspension damage. Tire damage. And an entire list of other recalls that were never fixed by Mitsubishi. Also Airbag light, incorrect gas level. Windshield fluid leaking, and more. My front tire is about to fly off. There are problems with the struts. And no mechanic wants to touch it due to a strut recall and can’t even buy struts anywhere for my car. They have been taken off the market completely. I have a 8 year old child in this car. And both of our lives at risk. I have brought it to several mechanics and they are in shock at the damage and how we have survived. I have had to pay with my own money for certain repairs because Mitsubishi said “everything looks fine” and sent me on my way. And now refuse to open a claim and pay it back. Or fix all the damage it has caused since the first control arm problem. I can get receipts and invoices together. But honestly the entire car is A huge liability and needs an IMMEDIATE SOLUTION!

2013 Mitsubishi Outlander recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 5 recalls for different components of the 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander.

2020-05-18
  • Manufacturer: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc.
  • Components: STRUCTURE:FRAME AND MEMBERS
  • Summary: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) is recalling certain 2008-2010 Lancer, 2009-2010 Lancer Sportback, 2008-2013 Outlander, and 2011-2016 Outlander Sport vehicles originally sold in, or ever registered in, Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. The front lower control arms may detach due to the front cross member corroding from salt water exposure such as from road salt use.
  • Consequence: A detached front control arm can result in a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: MMNA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the front cross members. Depending on the level of existing corrosion, either a sealing/anti-corrosion agent will be applied or the front cross member will be replaced with a new one. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began August 7, 2020. Owners may contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820. MMNA's number for this recall is SR-20-003.

  • Summary: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) is recalling certain 2007-2013 Outlander vehicles. In the affected vehicles, water may drop between the hood and the windshield and leak into the wiper motor breathing hole. The water may cause internal corrosion of the windshield wiper motor and the possible failure of the motor.
  • Consequence: Failure of the wiper motor can cause a loss of visibility, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: MMNA will notify owners, and dealers will replace the wiper motor, free of charge. The recall began July 28, 2017. Owners may contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820. MMNA's number for this recall is SR-17-003.

  • Manufacturer: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc.
  • Components: VISIBILITY:WINDSHIELD WIPER/WASHER:LINKAGES
  • Summary: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) is recalling certain model year 2007-2013 Outlander vehicles manufactured September 8, 2006, to March 29, 2013. In the affected vehicles, water may enter between the hood and windshield and cause the front wiper link ball joint to corrode, possibly resulting in the wiper link separating and the wipers becoming inoperative.
  • Consequence: Loss of wiper function can reduce visibility and increase the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: MMNA will notify owners, and dealers will replace the rubber boot on the ball joint to prevent water intrusion. Additionally, they will inspect the wiper motor crank arm for excessive play, replacing it as necessary. These repairs will be done free of charge. The recall began on July 28, 2017. Owners may contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820. MMNA's number for this recall is SR-16-009.

  • Manufacturer: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc.
  • Components: SUSPENSION:FRONT:CONTROL ARM:LOWER ARM
  • Summary: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) is recalling certain model year 2002-2007 Lancer, 2004 Lancer Wagon, 2003-2006 Lancer Evolution, 2003-2006 Outlander and 2007-2013 Outlander V-6 vehicles originally sold in, or ever registered in, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. In the affected vehicles, the front lower control arms may detach due to the front cross member corroding from salt water exposure such as from road salt use.
  • Consequence: A detached front control arm can result in the loss of control of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: MMNA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the front cross members. Depending on the level of existing corrosion, either a sealing/anti-corrosion agent will be applied or the front cross member will be replaced with a new one that has a sealing/anti-corrosion agent applied to it. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began January 2017. Owners may contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820. MMNA's number for this recall is SR-16-003.

  • Components: STEERING:HYDRAULIC POWER ASSIST:HOSE, PIPING, AND CONNECTIONS
  • Summary: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (Mitsubishi) is recalling certain model year 2013 Outlander vehicles equipped with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Additionally, Mitusbishi is recalling certain 2007-2012 Outlander vehicles that received replacement 6-speed automatic transmissions during servicing. The transmissions in these vehicles have insufficient clearance between the power steering pressure tube and the converter housing of the automatic transmission. • Consequence: A power steering fluid leak could result in a loss of steering assistance, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Mitsubishi will notify owners, and dealers will replace the power steering pressure tube and return tube, free of charge. The recall began in August 2014. Owners may contact Mitsubishi customer service at 1-888-648-7820. Mitsubishi's number for this recall is SR-14-006.

My CVT transmission seized at 137,500 miles. It is important to note that the owners manual does not mention changing the fluid, only checking it every 30k miles. Additionally, it is expected that the MIVEC motor valves be adjusted every 30k miles, which can cost around $400. Due to limited Mitsubishi dealers, I would advise against purchasing any Mitsubishi vehicles. It is also worth noting that the CVT fluid is $19.50 per quart, and roughly 6 quarts are needed to change the fluid once. The Diaqueen J4 tranny fluid can only be obtained at Mitsubishi, which can be a hassle. Furthermore, the 18

Buying a 2011 model of this vehicle back in 2013 for $17k seemed like a good deal. Unfortunately, it hasn't lived up to my expectations. While it handles beautifully in the snow and has pretty good cargo space, the SE trim version has had a fair share of issues. Despite this, I'm grateful for the third row seating which has been very handy, and the attractive body design. Although we've had to replace a few parts such as the front wheel bearing, wiper motor, climate control blower motor, and outer tie rod ends, we've managed to keep it running for almost 200k miles. However, we've decided it's time to part ways with this vehicle. While it's had its challenges, I'm still a fan of Mitsubishi and have had great experiences with their other vehicles. For instance, my 2007 Eclipse has been one of the best cars I've ever owned and continues to run solidly even as it approaches the 200k mile mark. Thank you, Mitsubishi, for the memories and the lessons learned.

Hi there! I noticed that you mentioned you bought this car because it was advertised as the most fuel-efficient seven-seater vehicle. However, you're only getting 17-20 mpg, which is a bit disappointing. I can understand your frustration with the fuel economy computer, which seems to automatically erase the average after the car has been turned off for 6 hours or more. Have you tried contacting the manufacturer about this issue?

Our 2011 Mitsubishi Outlander, 2.4L automatic, with AWD has been a reliable car until recently. Unfortunately, at 133k miles, the transmission failed and we were left stranded on I-70 with our family. After researching, we discovered that finding a replacement transmission for our specific year, model, sub-model, engine, and drive train was a challenge. However, we were able to locate a brand new transmission through a local transmission shop. Although the cost of purchasing, shipping, and installing the transmission will be almost $10k, we believe it is worth it to keep our car running smoothly. Despite our disappointment with the situation, we remain confident in our decision to purchase a Mitsubishi Outlander and will continue to recommend the brand to others.

I bought a 2011 Mitsubishi outlander SE FWD grey in color in 09/2011. I have had nothing but problems! 1st the sunroof popped out of it sitting in the garage!!Mitsubishi 1st gave me the run around, and after much debate, they paid for it. Then a stress crack in the windshield. I paid for it myself because I got NOWHERE w/ mitsubishi. It runs terrible, I have to be careful getting out on the highway or I will get run over. the dealership says nothing is wrong w/ it! I can smell burning rubber, and so can everyone else! They say nothing is wrong! Now the PAINT is comming off!! Mitsubishi says its MY fault....driving conditions??? The running light FELL out going down the road, and low MPGs!!!

I bought my GT in August 2011 without a sunroof or navigation. I was drawn to this fantastic SUV because of its reputation for reliability, awesome S-AWC system, great ergonomics, and powerful V6 engine. I've owned American, Japanese, and German brands in the past, but this time Mitsubishi really impressed me with their excellent warranty and standard features. I've already driven 4000 miles and the fuel economy is great for an SUV of this size, averaging 23mpg. The driving experience is very predictable and sporty, and the xenon headlights are incredible! I feel like I have the headlights of a rally car!

I test drove this car when it was first released, but as a high school student, I couldn't afford it. I waited until I purchased a used 2011 Outlander 2.4L 4WD in 2015 with 74,000km (46k miles) for $14,000 CAD ($10,500 USD). It was a great deal and I paid it off in 2018. I haven't had any mechanical trouble, except for a CV axle that was leaking in 2016 and was replaced under warranty. Currently, it has 170,000km (105k miles) and is still going strong. I absolutely love this car, especially since I'm 6'6

  3. Casimer Rosenbaum 2024-10-12

The Mitsubishi Outlander has been my reliable companion for years, accompanying me on my travels for work. This SUV is equipped with all the necessary features and amenities that one could desire. While it may not be the most luxurious or visually appealing SUV on the market, it certainly gets the job done. With over 300,000 Kms on the odometer, it has proven to be a durable and dependable vehicle. The 4WD feature is particularly useful during icy or snowy conditions, although it does consume more fuel. Overall, I am confident in the Outlander's performance and would highly recommend it to anyone in need of a reliable SUV.

I've owned my 2012 Outlander since, well, 2012, and everyone in the family loves the car! It's great to drive, has the highest safety ratings, is comfortable to ride in, and has required absolutely no repairs.
