The Mitsubishi Outlander (Japanese: 三菱・アウトランダー, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Autorandā) is a compact crossover SUV manufactured by Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors since 2001. It was originally known as the Mitsubishi Airtrek (Japanese: 三菱・エアトレック, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Eatorekku) when it was introduced in Japan.

The original Airtrek name was chosen to "describe the vehicle's ability to transport its passengers on adventure-packed journeys in a 'free-as-a-bird' manner", and was "coined from Air and Trek to express the idea of footloose, adventure-filled motoring pleasure." The Outlander nameplate which replaced it evoked a "feeling of journeying to distant, unexplored lands in search of adventure."

The second generation of the vehicle was introduced in 2006 and all markets including Japan adopted the Outlander name, although production of the older version continued in parallel. It was built on the company's GS platform, and used various engines developed by Mitsubishi, Volkswagen, and PSA Peugeot Citroën. PSA's Citroën C-Crosser and Peugeot 4007, which were manufactured by Mitsubishi in Japan, are badge engineered versions of the second generation Outlander. Global sales achieved the 1.5 million unit milestone in October 2016, 15 years after its market launch.

As part of the third generation line-up, Mitsubishi launched in January 2013 a plug-in hybrid model called Outlander PHEV. As of January 2022, global sales totaled about 300,000 units, and according to JATO Dynamics, the Outlander PHEV is the world's all-time best selling plug-in hybrid since December 2018. As of 2019, Europe is the leading market with over 126,000 units sold through January 2019, and the Outlander plug-in hybrid listed as Europe's best-selling plug-in hybrid car for five years running, 2015 to 2019.

The fourth-generation model was released 2021. Following Mitsubishi's entry to Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance, the fourth-generation Outlander is based on the Rogue/X-Trail, which is built on the CMF-CD platform.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-05-30
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: JA4AR4AU4CZ
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: MY MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER SPORT HAS A KEYLESS START. THERE IS NO MECHANISM THAT PREVENTS THE VEHICLE ACCIDENTALLY BEING TURNED OFF WHILE STILL IN DRIVE OR REVERSE. ON 5/30/19 AT APPROXIMATELY 9:20 PM, I MADE A RUN TO MY LOCAL RITE-AID. I TURNED OF THE IGNITION, BUT FORGOT TO PUT IT IN PARK. I EXITED THE STORE AFTER APPROXIMATELY 5 MINUTES TO FIND MY CAR MISSING FROM THE PARKING LOT. I INITIALLY THOUGHT IT HAD BEEN STOLEN. THE POLICE FOUND MY VEHICLE AFTER IT HAD ROLLED OUT OF THE PARKING LOT, INTO TRAFFIC AND ENDED UP CRASHING IN A DITCH. IT HAD TO BE HAULED OUT AND SUSTAINED SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE AND MAY BE A TOTAL LOSS. I CAN ONLY BE GRATEFUL THAT IT DID NOT COLLIDE INTO ANOTHER VEHICLE,L OR HIT A PEDESTRIAN. THIS ACCIDENT COULD HAVE EASILY KILLED SOMEONE. THERE IS NO LOGICAL REASON THAT A SAFETY MECHANISM SHOULD NOT BE A STANDARD REQUIREMENT IN ALL PUSH BUTTON START VEHICLES TO PREVENT SUCH A TRAGEDY. THE CAR RENTAL I AM CURRENTLY USING IS A 2019 ESCALADE. I TESTED THE REMOTE START IN THE ESCALADE AND NO MATTER WHAT GEAR I AM IN WHEN I SHUT OFF THE ENGINE, IT AUTOMATICALLY DEFAULTS TO PARK. IT CAN BE DONE AND SHOULD BE REQUIRED!

POWER TRAIN,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-09-01
  • VIN: JA4JT3AW6CU
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: FOLLOWING I JUST SENT TO MITSUBISHI HEADQUARTERS I SEE RECALLS FOR TRANSMISSIONS FOR MY MAKE AND MODEL AND YEAR THAT STATES TRANSMISSION FAIL PREMATURELY BETWEEN THE MILES OF 114,000! AND 179,000 AND MINE DID AT 137,000 IT IS NOW STATING FOR 4 MODEL YEARS 2 OF WHICH ARE 2011&2013. WHAT WAS THE DIFFERENCE FOR 2012 TRANSMISSION WHEN YES INDEED MY YEAR OF 2012 TRANSMISSION FAILED PREMATURELY? IT DID JUST AS YOUR RECALL STATES AND THEN WHEN I PUT IN MY VIN# I AM TOLD IT WASN'T MY SKIPPED YEAR THAT WAS PART OF THE RECALL. LATER DOWN THE ROAD MONTHS LATER I RECHECK AND MY YEAR NEWLY BECAME SKIPPED FOR THIS TRANSMISSION RECALLS. I BELIEVE THERE WAS MORE THAN ONE REASON FOR YOUR RECALL. CAN YOU DO THE RIGHT BY THE CAR I BOUGHT FROM YOU FOLKS AND REPLACE THE FAULTY TRANSMISSION THAT WAS PUT IN MY CAR? YOU: I HAVE A 2012 MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER. I BROKE DOWN ON THE INTERSTATE AND HAD MY CAR TOWED TO THE MITSUBISHI DEALER AND THEIR SERVICE DEPT SAID MY TRANSMISSION IS SHOT DUE TO A SECONDARY CODE THAT THE CVT HAS NON OPERATIONAL PRESSURE WITH AN INTERNAL WEAK OIL PUMP WHICH CAUSED THE FAILURE. AND IT WOULD BE 7,500$ JUST FOR A NEW TRANSMISSION AND AN ADDITIONAL 800$ TO PUT IT IN. I BELIEVE THERE WAS A RECALL SKIPPING MY YEAR CAR BEING A 2012 OUTLANDER. I BOUGHT IT NEW AND HAVE ALWAYS HAD DIFFERENT PROBLEMS WITH IT. ONE OF WHICH BACK IN 2016 THE PINION SEAL FOR THE TRANSFER CASE WAS FAULTY AND IT TOOK ME TO DEMAND CHECKING WHY I WAS GETTING A LEAK OF OIL LEFT ON MY CLEAN GARAGE FLOOR. I BRING THAT UP AS TO COULD THIS BE ONE OF THE CAUSES OF TRANSMISSION FAILURE? I DID HAVE IT REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY WHICH NEVER WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF I DIDN'T NOTICE THE LEAK MYSELF. WHILE I AM AT IT MY HEAT AND AC HAVE BEEN BARELY BEEN ACCEPTABLE FOR KEEPING US WARM IN THE COLD WINTERS HERE AND AC NOT PERFORMING VERY WELL EITHER. MY CAR IS NOW STRANDED AT THE BURLINGTON MITSUBISHI DEALER

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-06-17
  • VIN: JA4AR4AU8CZ
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: TRANSMISSION/ENGINE MAKES A HIGH PITCHED WHINING NOISE WHEN ACCELERATING ABOVE 2000 RPMS CURRENTLY. IT STARTED OUT ONLY DOING IT WHEN GOING UP HILL AT HIGHER RPMS BUT HAS GOTTEN WORSE. IT HAS ALSO AFFECTED THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM AND HAD THE LOCKS, BACKUP CAMERA, REVERSE LIGHTS ALL GOING HAYWIRE. THIS WAS WITNESSED BY MY OIL SHOP WHILE GETTING AN OIL CHANGE ON IT THE MECHANIC COULDNT GET THE VEHICLE FROM DRIVE TO PARK AMD ONCE IT DID GO IT WOULD UNLOCK FROM PARK. I WAS TOLD IT WAS SENSORS BY A MITSUBISHI DEALERSHIP BUT THAT DIDNT SOLVE THE PROBLEM. IT REVS THE ENGINE IT HIGH TPMS WHILE DRIVING NOT LETTINGNIT SHIFT FROM 1ST TO 2ND AND MAKES IT SO YOU CANT GET THE VEHICLE OFF THE ROAD BECAUSE THE TRANSMISSION SHUTS DOWN. EVEN IN NEUTRAL THE RPMSWILL INCREASE WHEN IT DOES THIS. THIS IS A SAFTEY ISSUE WITH THIS ENGINE/TRANSMISSION IF YOU GET STUCK IN A HIGH TRAFFIC AREA AND CAN NOT GET TO A SAFE PULLOFF. IVE HAD MY KIDS IN THE CAR WHEN THIS HAS HAPPENED AND THE DEALERSHIPS (ALL 3 OF THEM) CA NOT FIND THE PROBLEM. I HAVE HAD TO MISS WORK FOR THESE APPOINTMENTS AND NOW THE WARRANTY IS EXPIRED AS I BOUGHT IT USED AND CAN NOT AFFORD TO REPLACE A TRANSMISSION OR ENGINE AND BEING THIS IS MY ONLY VEHICLE AND NOTHING COULD BE DONE WHILE IT WAS UNDER WARRANTY AND SEEING OTHERS COMPLAINING OF THE SAME THINGS WITH THERE VEHICLES IT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED AND CORRECTED. IT ALSO SMELLS LIKE RUBBER OR ELECTRICAL BURNING WHEN THIS HAPPENS.

  • Manufacturer: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc.
  • Components: STEERING:HYDRAULIC POWER ASSIST:HOSE, PIPING, AND CONNECTIONS
  • Summary: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (Mitsubishi) is recalling certain model year 2013 Outlander vehicles equipped with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Additionally, Mitusbishi is recalling certain 2007-2012 Outlander vehicles that received replacement 6-speed automatic transmissions during servicing. The transmissions in these vehicles have insufficient clearance between the power steering pressure tube and the converter housing of the automatic transmission. As a result of the contact, the power steering pressure tube may develop a hole and leak power steering fluid.
  • Consequence: A power steering fluid leak could result in a loss of steering assistance, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Mitsubishi will notify owners, and dealers will replace the power steering pressure tube and return tube, free of charge. The recall began in August 2014. Owners may contact Mitsubishi customer service at 1-888-648-7820. Mitsubishi's number for this recall is SR-14-006.

Negative 2012 Mitsubishi Outlander car reviews

I purchased my 2011 Mitsubishi Outlander in 2015 and have been diligent in following the owner's manual for regular servicing. However, I recently discovered that the CVT transmission oil needs to be changed every 30,000 miles, which was not explicitly stated in the manual. Despite having recalls and service done at a Mitsubishi dealer in May 2018, the transmission fluid was never mentioned. Unfortunately, my car recently experienced transmission failure without any warning lights, leaving me without a vehicle. While I previously loved this car and its spacious back door for my older dogs, I must caution others to be careful when considering a Mitsubishi. The cost of transmission repairs is high and rebuilds have received poor reviews. In fact, I have since given away this car and purchased a new one, as we were unable to find a suitable transmission replacement. Please think twice before buying a Mitsubishi.

We downsized from a 2004 Durango Limited to the GT Outlander. We've been really happy with it so far! It has a unique look and handles like a sports car. Plus, it feels secure in the snow. The MPG has been decent too - I've hit 30MPG at 60mph. One of our favorite features is the lay flat rear 'bed'. It's a cool truck that not everyone has!

We are excited to share that we have leased two Mitsubishi Outlanders, including a full-size 7-seater (4cyl) and a Sport model, both equipped with 4WD systems. We were thrilled to find that this was the best lease deal available for any SUV, and they also gave us the best deal on our trade-ins. We were impressed with the overall appearance, features, and test drive experience of both cars. The 7-seater option and full 4WD make these cars truly unique. While we love everything about these cars, we did notice three areas for improvement: fuel economy is lower than advertised, the plastic used is easily stainable/scratchable, and the CVT transmission can be noisy and slow to react. Overall, we highly recommend these cars and are confident that they will provide a great driving experience.

Our 2011 Mitsubishi Outlander, 2.4L automatic, with AWD has been a reliable car until recently. Unfortunately, at 133k miles, the transmission failed and we were left stranded on I-70 with our family. After researching, we discovered that finding a replacement transmission for our specific year, model, sub-model, engine, and drive train was a challenge. However, we were able to locate a brand new transmission through a local transmission shop. Although the cost of purchasing, shipping, and installing the transmission will be almost $10k, we believe it is worth it to keep our car running smoothly. Despite our disappointment with the situation, we remain confident in our decision to purchase a Mitsubishi Outlander and will continue to recommend the brand to others.

My CVT transmission seized at 137,500 miles. It is important to note that the owners manual does not mention changing the fluid, only checking it every 30k miles. Additionally, it is expected that the MIVEC motor valves be adjusted every 30k miles, which can cost around $400. Due to limited Mitsubishi dealers, I would advise against purchasing any Mitsubishi vehicles. It is also worth noting that the CVT fluid is $19.50 per quart, and roughly 6 quarts are needed to change the fluid once. The Diaqueen J4 tranny fluid can only be obtained at Mitsubishi, which can be a hassle. Furthermore, the 18

I purchased this car at the end of 2012 after my previous car was totaled. I had to make a quick decision and hadn't considered a CUV before. However, this one was advertised as a leftover 2012 for just 19K. I was impressed with the storage and room in both the front and rear, and the ride was very comfortable. Overall, it was a much better value than just a sedan for someone who needs to haul things from time to time. So far, after 19 months, the reliability has been excellent with no problems at all! The fuel economy is about as advertised at 23/28, with even better city mileage under some circumstances. However, if your highway speeds get much above 70mph, the economy seems to drop off sharply.

This is my second Outlander and I am absolutely loving it! I previously owned an XLS and it was great, but this time I decided to go with the MIVEC 4 cyl for even better gas mileage. I was pleasantly surprised by the responsiveness of the 4 with the CVT and I don't even miss the 6 cyl! The car has everything I wanted in it, handles well, has a very nice sound system, and plenty of features. Plus, the great warranty gives me peace of mind. I am hoping to have the same kind of reliability I had with the first one, which had zero issues! In fact, my parents even got one too!

I got the Outlander earlier this year and I must say, I really like it! However, I do have a few concerns. Sometimes after driving long distances, I notice a burnt rubber smell and the CVT could have a better response as it seems a bit sluggish. But overall, I love everything else about my Outlander, especially the Bluetooth system. I practically do the maintenance myself and I'm excited to take it on my first road trip soon. I wonder how it will perform on the highway!

I've been searching for a new SUV for a year now. Every time I went to the grocery store, I would see two more vehicles just like my 06 Honda CRV, and in the same color too! However, the Outlander is not a CRV or RAV4, and that's a good thing. I test drove Honda, Toyota, Nissan, and Hyundai, but I ultimately traded my 06 Honda CRV for this car. The Outlander is sportier, has better seats, and is really fun to drive. I'm extremely happy with my decision!

Excellent SUV! I love the handling and the spacious interior and cargo area. The AWC is really impressive. The only downside is that there are some cheap plastics inside, but overall it's a great utility vehicle.
