The Mitsubishi Outlander (Japanese: 三菱・アウトランダー, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Autorandā) is a compact crossover SUV manufactured by Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors since 2001. It was originally known as the Mitsubishi Airtrek (Japanese: 三菱・エアトレック, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Eatorekku) when it was introduced in Japan.

The original Airtrek name was chosen to "describe the vehicle's ability to transport its passengers on adventure-packed journeys in a 'free-as-a-bird' manner", and was "coined from Air and Trek to express the idea of footloose, adventure-filled motoring pleasure." The Outlander nameplate which replaced it evoked a "feeling of journeying to distant, unexplored lands in search of adventure."

The second generation of the vehicle was introduced in 2006 and all markets including Japan adopted the Outlander name, although production of the older version continued in parallel. It was built on the company's GS platform, and used various engines developed by Mitsubishi, Volkswagen, and PSA Peugeot Citroën. PSA's Citroën C-Crosser and Peugeot 4007, which were manufactured by Mitsubishi in Japan, are badge engineered versions of the second generation Outlander. Global sales achieved the 1.5 million unit milestone in October 2016, 15 years after its market launch.

As part of the third generation line-up, Mitsubishi launched in January 2013 a plug-in hybrid model called Outlander PHEV. As of January 2022, global sales totaled about 300,000 units, and according to JATO Dynamics, the Outlander PHEV is the world's all-time best selling plug-in hybrid since December 2018. As of 2019, Europe is the leading market with over 126,000 units sold through January 2019, and the Outlander plug-in hybrid listed as Europe's best-selling plug-in hybrid car for five years running, 2015 to 2019.

The fourth-generation model was released 2021. Following Mitsubishi's entry to Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance, the fourth-generation Outlander is based on the Rogue/X-Trail, which is built on the CMF-CD platform.

Common 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander problems

The 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. One of the most significant issues is the automatic transmission failure, which has been reported by many owners.

Another common problem with the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander is erratic blower motor operation due to a failed resistor and/or fan motor. This issue can cause the blower motor to operate intermittently or at the wrong speed, making it difficult to control the cabin temperature.

In addition to these mechanical issues, the 2016 Outlander also has problems with its body paint. The paint is prone to chipping and scratches, indicating a poor paint job. This issue can be particularly frustrating for owners who want to maintain the appearance of their vehicle.

The 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander also shares some of the problems found in earlier models, such as faulty safety equipment. Some owners have reported issues with the airbag system, where the airbags fail to deploy following an accident, and the seatbelts, which may not tighten during an accident or fail to retract.

These problems have contributed to the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander being one of the worst model years to avoid due to its high number of complaints and recalls. As with any vehicle, it's essential to do thorough research and consider the specific needs and preferences of the buyer before making a purchase decision.

The car rolled back then slammed into my car again going just as fast. The airbags did not deploy and the seatbelts did not lock. The impact actually broke the seats the passenger and I were sitting in. There were extensive injuries that happened because of this. The SUV was deemed a total loss because of the extensive damage done to the car. There were no warning messages, no recalls, etc. The SUV was inspected by a mechanic and insurance company and both said that the airbags should have gone off and the seatbelts should have locked based on the amount of damage to the SUV. I also took this SUV into the Mitsubishi dealership for all services/maintenance and nothing ever came up about any issues.

POWER TRAIN,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-02-02
  • VIN: JA4AD3A38GZ
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: This vehicle is dangerous and going to kill someone. I owned it 4 months and had to have it taken to 3 different dealerships 7 times in 6 weeks because it would die without warning while driving. It left me stranded in 2 different states and I was told every time nothing could be found as to why this would happen. However, there were several codes that came up that lead me and my mechanic to believe the transmission was failing. The dealerships did not want to fix it under my warranty so they told me nothing was wrong. I believe they also did this so that when I inevitably got them to take it back, they would have no paper trail of horrific problems to have to disclose when reselling it. I had to fight to get a new car and I was told this car would be sold wholesale and the issues would be disclosed. They were not. The dealer who bought it had no idea. Upon reaching out to them, they have made the decision to return it to the wholesale company they got it from. If nothing can be done from the NHTSA side, I will continue to track the vin and tell everyone what has occurred until that car is disposed of. Please, I implore you to get ahold of this car and scrap it completely. Someone will die if this car continues being sold as nothing was fixed and nothing was disclosed about the issues with it. Get this car off the streets. It is not safe to drive.

Negative 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander car reviews

  1. Lon Schneider 2024-10-17

The third seat can be a bit challenging for children of any age to access. The seat belts are difficult for 5-year-olds to fasten by themselves and can be hard to reach from outside the car. Unfortunately, there are no charging ports in the back and only one cup holder on one side. The 7th seat belt is not very practical. Additionally, the paint quality is not up to par, as it has already chipped all over the hood within just 2 weeks of purchasing the car. Despite these issues, the car still runs very well. However, it would be great if there were air vents in the back, which should be a standard feature. It's worth noting that some plastic pieces have broken or gone missing, but this is likely due to the car being used by 2 adults and their grandchildren every other weekend. After 1 year of ownership, the paint on the car looks like it has been owned for 5 years or more, which is disappointing. It would be great if the dealer (Firkins in Bradenton, FL) could show more interest in resolving this issue. Overall, while this car may not be perfect, it still has some great features and is worth considering. The vehicle is still running very well mechanically. However, the paint, especially on the hood, looks terrible. I have noticed that other cars of the same model do not have this issue. Additionally, the backseat is not spacious enough for my grandkids, who are 3, 5, 8, and 11 years old. The car seat for the 3-year-old cannot fit in the backseat, and it is difficult to fit three children on the middle seat with the car seat. Unfortunately, some plastic pieces in the interior kept falling off, and I have lost some of them. Despite these issues, I appreciate the dealer's follow-up, but I will not be purchasing another car from Firkin's in Bradenton. Thank you for your understanding.

  2. Donald Koelpin 2024-07-06

I bought this car when it had only 4 miles on it. After my first oil change, I noticed some small specs on the hood which gradually increased in size. During my next oil change, I mentioned it to the service team who took pictures and sent them to corporate since the dealer cannot make warranty decisions on leather and paint. The regional director of service inspected my vehicle and took more pictures which were also sent to corporate. Unfortunately, I was informed that these were stones and not covered under warranty. Although I am not an expert in car engineering, repair or sales, I believe that if something hit my car hard enough to chip the paint to the gray primer, there would probably be a dent, which there is not. As the chips are increasing in numbers and size, I am worried that my entire hood will turn gray before the loan is even paid off. Therefore, I advise potential buyers to be cautious and search for 'Mitsubishi paint chips' or 'problems' on Google.

The 2016 Outlander, which is less than 3 months old, has experienced peeling and chipping on the front exterior. Despite the fact that the car is driven on the same roads as my other two cars, which have not experienced any chipping or peeling, the warranty company has stated that this issue is not covered due to it being caused by pebbles. Additionally, there is a crooked crease across the inside roof where the sun roof is located, which was noticed one month after purchase. However, the warranty company has deemed this to be a user issue.

Hey there! I wanted to share my experience with my 2016 AWD Outlander. My son and I both got one and it's been a unique addition to the Outback world. The rear cargo space is great and I highly recommend getting the roof racks. The highway mileage is also impressive at 30+. The driver-controlled ECO and AWD options are a nice touch. The only issue we've had is with the paint application on the hood and pillars of both of our cars. It seems to be a common problem, so I suggest doing some research before making a purchase. Despite owning Porsches, Lexus, Jags, Saabs, Volvos, and American cars, I've never had this much trouble with paint chipping. Unfortunately, the regional Mitsu representative was not helpful in addressing the issue. If you're considering buying an Outlander, I recommend asking the dealer to include coverage for any paint issues in your purchase agreement and installing a bra or windscreen. It's frustrating to have to deal with this on two new cars that we've taken great care of. Thanks for listening!

I'm so glad to hear that you're happy with your purchase! It sounds like you've got a great vehicle that feels luxurious without the high price tag. Plus, with a better warranty than a Lexus, you can enjoy your new ride with peace of mind.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with the MITSU Outlander. I recently purchased one and I must say, it's been a great car so far! The GT model in particular has really stood out to me, and it has some amazing technology that I haven't seen in other cars like the Toyota Highlander or Honda CRV. Another great feature is the Rockford Fosgate sound system which sounds amazing! Overall, I'm really happy with my purchase and would highly recommend the MITSU Outlander to anyone in the market for a new car.

I recently posted the following review on another site: This review is subject to revision as time passes, of course, especially since I only took possession in October of 2016 and only have a little over 2,100 miles on the odometer. I looked at a lot of similar vehicles before making the purchase, read a ton of reviews, and took a couple of test drives as well before I plunked down the dough for the GT version (no extra add-ons, but I'll get into that later). This Mitsu provides very good ground clearance and real 4wd for those occasions when my business travel takes me off the pavement. So far, I've only needed the 4wd once, and it extricated me from a severe mud-hole where awd would have had difficulty. Visibility from the driver's seat is excellent in all directions. At first, I thought the seats were somewhat uncomfortable, but now I don't. The dash controls are configured effectively, but I'm still finding new features. The radio sounds really good, but I'm not sure if I am benefiting from nine speakers. I do worry about the big woofer in the back hatch area getting damaged, and I may try to figure out some sort of grill guard to employ. I appreciate that I have the option of both key and keyless operation, for both starting the vehicle and opening the doors. There's a lot of room inside this vehicle, especially when the rear seats are down (easily done). Several rear-seat passengers have said they are quite comfortable and like the options of both reclining and seat travel (although the seats don't really move that much). This is not a heavy vehicle, so all the road cracks and bumps aren't soaked up by the suspension and soundproofing, but all-in-all it's a pleasant drive. As for the driving experience, let me just say it's enjoyable. The little V6 hums along nicely and quietly and propels the vehicle as fast as I need it to. The handling is crisp, and the vehicle holds the road well.I'm not the type to worry about 0-60 acceleration, but the Outlander has no problem merging into traffic on expressways and interstates, making me feel safe. So far, I've averaged 29 mpg during some long hauls, and 25 mpg during mixed local use. Although the owner's manual recommends premium fuel, I've only put regular in the tank. One thing I'm having trouble adjusting to are the LED lights; I just don't like the curtain effect that is projected into the darkness. However, the Outlander provides the driver with the ability to easily adjust the beam angle, which has helped a little. Of course, the whole world is lit up when the high beams are on. As already mentioned, this vehicle comes well-equipped, and in some ways with more features than I really needed or wanted. Nonetheless, I did add an OEM bug/stone deflector (that actually works), and also a set of OEM mud guards (that don't do a very effective job at minimizing wheel spray onto the body). I will also be adding some 3M protective film on the tailgate ledge as well as on the door sills and door edges to help minimize scrapes and chips. Mitsubishi should have included these four items as standard. When comparing my needs and wants, many of the vehicles I examined fell short. Several had deceptive ground clearance specs, and some vehicles had protruding air dams, front bumpers, or exhaust components just waiting to get snagged and torn-off. Other vehicles claimed good ground clearance, but didn't truthfully say whether it was This Outlander replaced an amazing Isuzu Trooper that gave me 260,000 miles of reliable service. If Isuzu was still selling a Trooper-type vehicle in the USA, I would probably be driving a new one. I'm really enjoying this new vehicle and becoming more comfortable with it as the miles roll along. I believe, like the Trooper, it will provide me with good value. Maybe another update down the road??

Of course, everyone loves their new car and we are no exception. During our three-month stay in Australia, we drove two Outlanders for just over 10,000 KM (about 6,300 miles). This SUV is the perfect size for us, with seven passenger three rows, making it larger than the smallest SUVs but not as bulky as the biggest ones. The third row seat is not the biggest, but it offers about a foot and a half more room between the second row and the hatch, which was very useful during our extended road trip with lots of luggage and gear. We rented the ES/SE (rental hybrid of trim levels) with the 2.4 CVT in Australia, and bought the SE S-AWC a month ago here in DFW. I had the same experience as other private reviewers. The Outlander has plenty of power for passing, easily goes from 55 to 70 uphill in the mountains with a full load of gear, and tachs at 2,300 when cruising at 70. It has a very smooth stable ride, a good driving position with comfortable seats, feels confident when cornering, and brakes well. The interior is remarkably quiet. One of the features that sets the Outlander apart from other small SUVs is the ability to disengage the AWD system altogether, using just the FWD and saving a penny on gas. We test drove most of the manufacturers, and could feel the difference between the AWD and the FWD. The Outlander’s AWD was not noticeable whether engaged or not. We spent a lot of time and miles in the Outlander ES/SE in Australia, and found it (and Australia) altogether agreeable. We test drove the GT (V6) and the Sport (shorter wheelbase). The GT and the Sport have firmer rides for different reasons. The seven passenger ES S-AWC 2.4 CVT is the way for us to go. It’s an all-day driver, and carries our full load of gear without breaking a sweat. We still love the ride and drive, even after all this time. The car's gas mileage varied depending on the driving conditions. On a trip from Amarillo to Tucumcari, driving west on I-40 at 70 mph into a strong headwind, the car got 21 mpg. However, on a trip from El Paso to Midland/Odessa, driving east on I-20 through the oil patch with a speed limit of 80 mph, the car achieved 33 mpg. It's possible that a tailwind helped improve the mileage on this trip.

I currently own a 2014 Rogue and 2013 BMW X3 Msport. In my experience, this SUV beats both vehicles in terms of ride quality. Even though it has a CVT, it doesn't hesitate when acceleration is needed, and the engine doesn't rev as much as compared to the Rogue. In my opinion, the CRV and RAV4 are overrated and don't match up to this vehicle. I believe that Mitsubishi's bad reputation over the past 10 years is the only reason why consumers don't consider them when shopping for a car. However, I can honestly admit that they have come a long way to improve it. I am grateful that I went to a Mitsubishi dealer just to see what they had, and I was pleasantly surprised. If you are shopping for a vehicle that fits your budget and has the basic perks, especially ride comfort and style, then I highly recommend checking out this vehicle. I'm not kidding when I say that the exterior style is not ugly at all. In fact, I think it looks better than a CRV or RAV4, and it looks bigger too! If you look at it sideways, it's similar to a BMW X5, although they could have done better in the vehicle's front fascia. Overall, I am very pleased to own a 2016 SEL.
