2007 Mitsubishi Outlander problems
The Mitsubishi Outlander (Japanese: 三菱・アウトランダー, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Autorandā) is a compact crossover SUV manufactured by Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors since 2001. It was originally known as the Mitsubishi Airtrek (Japanese: 三菱・エアトレック, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Eatorekku) when it was introduced in Japan.
The original Airtrek name was chosen to "describe the vehicle's ability to transport its passengers on adventure-packed journeys in a 'free-as-a-bird' manner", and was "coined from Air and Trek to express the idea of footloose, adventure-filled motoring pleasure." The Outlander nameplate which replaced it evoked a "feeling of journeying to distant, unexplored lands in search of adventure."
The second generation of the vehicle was introduced in 2006 and all markets including Japan adopted the Outlander name, although production of the older version continued in parallel. It was built on the company's GS platform, and used various engines developed by Mitsubishi, Volkswagen, and PSA Peugeot Citroën. PSA's Citroën C-Crosser and Peugeot 4007, which were manufactured by Mitsubishi in Japan, are badge engineered versions of the second generation Outlander. Global sales achieved the 1.5 million unit milestone in October 2016, 15 years after its market launch.
As part of the third generation line-up, Mitsubishi launched in January 2013 a plug-in hybrid model called Outlander PHEV. As of January 2022, global sales totaled about 300,000 units, and according to JATO Dynamics, the Outlander PHEV is the world's all-time best selling plug-in hybrid since December 2018. As of 2019, Europe is the leading market with over 126,000 units sold through January 2019, and the Outlander plug-in hybrid listed as Europe's best-selling plug-in hybrid car for five years running, 2015 to 2019.
The fourth-generation model was released 2021. Following Mitsubishi's entry to Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance, the fourth-generation Outlander is based on the Rogue/X-Trail, which is built on the CMF-CD platform.

Common 2007 Mitsubishi Outlander problems
The Mitsubishi Outlander 2007 has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. Here are some of the issues in detail:
- CVT Transmission: The Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) in the Outlander 2007 has been reported to have issues. Fluid changes might prevent these problems. To prevent issues with the transmission, regularly inspect the transmission fluid level and change the fluid during recommended intervals. If there's a problem with the transmission causing these symptoms, you'll likely need to rebuild or replace it.
- Crank Position Sensor Failure: The crank position sensor can cause a no-start condition. If you've had timing belt/chain or head gasket work done, the timing could be off and causing this issue. The crank sensor is located on the backside of the engine. It's above the axle on the right side. Replacing the sensor might fix this issue, but if not, there could be a problem with the timing.
- Water Pump: Coolant leaking on the passenger side of the vehicle or a low coolant level are usually from a leaking water pump on the 2007 to 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander. On the V6 engine, the water belt is located underneath the timing belt, and it's recommended to replace the timing belt at the same time as the water pump. The water pump on the 4-cylinder engine is external and driven by the drive belt.
- Door Handle: The door handle can break if pulled too hard from the edge. You don't have to remove the door panel to replace the door handle in the 2nd gen Outlander. Remove the rubber grommet from the side of the door, remove the star bit, and then remove the trim cover from the door handle to remove and replace the door handle.
- Leaking Fuel Pipes: There have been recalls for the Outlander, most notably to do with leaking fuel pipes. Owners have complained of 'lurching' on diesel models and faulty brake sensors.
- Stalling Engines: There have been recalls for the Outlander to do with stalling engines. This can be a serious safety issue and should be addressed immediately.
- Failing Brakes: There have been recalls for the Outlander to do with failing brakes. This can be a serious safety issue and should be addressed immediately.
- Faulty Brake Lights and Clutches: There have been recalls for the Outlander to do with faulty brake lights and clutches. This can be a safety issue and should be addressed immediately.
- Broken Parking Brakes: There have been recalls for the Outlander to do with broken parking brakes. This can be a safety issue and should be addressed immediately.
These issues have been reported by owners and should be considered when purchasing or maintaining a Mitsubishi Outlander 2007. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent some of these issues.

STEERING,SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-04-09
- VIN: JA4MT41X47Z
- Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE
- Summary: MY SON ONLY WEEKS AGO WAS GIVEN HIS MOTHER'S 2007 OUTLANDER AS AN UPGRADE TO HIS FORMER VEHICLE. DAYS AGO, HE FOUND PIECES OF THE SUB FRAME BREAKING OFF UNDERNEATH AFTER HEARING AN ODD NOISE DURING OPERATION. THIS VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED NEW IN 2007 IN OMAHA, NE. MITSUBISHI'S RECALL FOR SUB FRAME CORROSION DOES NOT INCLUDE VEHICLES PURCHASED IN NEBRASKA AS IT ISN'T IN THE NARROWLY DEFINED "SALT BELT" (ALTHOUGH IOWA IS INCLUDED). IF YOU HAVE NEVER BEEN TO OMAHA, NE DURING THE WINTER YOU WOULD KNOW THAT THE CITY PUTS AS MUCH SALT AND SALT BRINE ON THE ROADS AS ANYWHERE ELSE IN THE NATION--WINTER WEATHER, I.E. SNOW AND ICE-- IN OMAHA IS SEVERE. VEHICLES THAT ARE OPERATED REGULARLY IN THE OMAHA AREA RUST PREMATURELY AND THAT IS A FACT. THIS VEHICLE IS NOW UNSAFE TO DRIVE AND THE VALUE IS PROBABLY NEAR ZERO BUT MITSUBISHI WILL NOT COVER THE COST TO REPAIR. THE NHTSA SHOULD EXTEND THE SUB FRAME RECALL TO OTHER STATES WHERE THE USE OF ROAD SALT IS EXTENSIVE I.E. NEBRASKA, COLORADO, UTAH, ETC...THIS IS A TRAVESTY AND SHOULD BE RECTIFIED IMMEDIATELY BEFORE SOMEONE IS SEVERELY INJURED OR KILLED DRIVING THESE VEHICLES.
STEERING,SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-03-23
- VIN: JA4MT41X97Z
- Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION
- Summary: TOOK MY 2007 MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER XLS V-6 TO DEALERSHIP FOR SEVERAL RECALLS INCLUDING RECALL NO. 16V-458 / SR-16-003 ON MAY 05, 2018. I PICKED UP MY VEHICLE AND WAS TOLD IT DID NOT REQUIRE THE CROSS MEMBER REPLACEMENT AND THE ANTI CORROSION SPRAY WAS PERFORMED. AROUND 7:00 PM EDT SATURDAY, MARCH 23, 2019 WHILE ENTERING A EXIT LANE ON US 119 NORTHBOUND AT THE GREEN ROAD EXIT, MY CAR MADE A LOUD GRINDING SOUND AND STARTING PULLING VERY HARD TO THE LEFT AND CAME TO AN ABRUPT STOP AFTER APPROXIMATELY 10-15 FEET. FORTUNATELY, I WAS ENTERING THE TURN LANE AND WAS SLOWING DOWN OR IT COULD HAVE EASILY FORCE ME INTO THE MEDIUM DIVIDER OR EVEN INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC. I COULD NOT MOVE THE VEHICLE FORWARD AND PUT MY EMERGENCY FLASHERS ON TO AVOID BEING REAR ENDED BY ONCOMING TRAFFIC. I WAS VERY CONCERNED AS I HAD MY 3 YEAR OLD GRAND DAUGHTER WITH ME AND IT IS A VERY CONGESTED AREA. I TRIED TO EXIT THE VEHICLE TO SEE IF I COULD DETERMINE WHAT WAS WRONG. THE DRIVER DOOR HAD TO BE FORCED OPEN AS I LATER DISCOVERED AFTER EXITING THE VEHICLE THAT THE FROM LEFT FENDER HAD BEEN PUSHED BACK INTO THE DOOR AREA BY THE FRONT TIRE. AFTER A QUICK INSPECTION IT APPEARED THE CONTROL ARM BROKE. AFTER REMOVING THE TIRE, IT WAS EVIDENT THAT THE CROSS MEMBER HAD SEPARATED FROM THE VEHICLE DUE TO EXTREME CORROSION CAUSING THE LOSS OF CONTROL AND ABRUPT STOP. THIS IS THE EXACT PROBLEM I HAD TAKEN IT INTO THE DEALERSHIP FOR THE RECALL AND WAS TOLD MINE DID NOT NEED REPLACED. I AM ATTACHING PICTURES OF THE VEHICLE TO SHOW THE MISSING AND BROKEN CROSS MEMBER. THERE IS NO WAY THIS CORRODED TO THE FAILURE POINT SINCE THE RECALL REPAIR WAS ALLEGEDLY COMPLETED. FURTHER MORE, IF TREATING THE AREA WAS SUPPOSEDLY SUFFICIENT TO PREVENT FURTHER CORROSION (AS OPPOSED TO THE REPLACEMENT OF THE CROSS MEMBER), THIS FAILURE SHOULD NOT HAVE TAKEN PLACE. THEREFORE, EVERY CROSS MEMBER SHOULD BE REPLACED!

- Summary: THE DEFROST DOES NOT WORK WELL ENOUGH TO KEPT WINDOW CLEAR FOR DRIVING. THE ANTI SKID ELECTRONICS KEEPS LOCKING OUT THE TRANSMISSION AND IT WILL NOT SHIFT ABOVE 3 RD GEAR. CAUSING A DRIVE SPEED LIMIT BELOW THE REQUIRED HIGHWAY MINIMUM. HAVE TAKEN IT IN TO THE DEALER AND THEY CHARGED ME TO FIX IT BUT THE PROBLEM IS RECURRING.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-02-20
- VIN: JA4MT31X57Z
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: THE TRANSFER CASE OIL SEAL DISLODGED, AND THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID (AFT) ENTERED THE CASE ASSEMBLY, RESULTING IN POOR TRANSMISSION SHIFTING WITH A STRANGE SOUND. THIS SHOULD BE COVERED BY RECALL NUMBER 14V365000 (RECALL DATE 06/25/2014). BUT MITSUBISHI CUSTOMER RELATIONS DEPARTMENT DENIED THIS IMPORTANT POWER TRAIN - TRANSFER CASE RECALL, SAYING THIS VEHICLE HAS ONLY FOUR RECALLS, NOT INCLUDING THIS RECALL. THEY ALSO DO NOT HAVE ANY RECORDS ON WHERE AND WHEN THESE RECALLS WERE CORRECTED. I HAVE NEVER CONTACTED A SUCH BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE DEPARTMENT.

- Summary: PASSENGER SIDE FRONT COIL SPRING FRACTURED AND SEPARATED WHILE DRIVING. THIS SAME ISSUE WAS PREVIOUSLY REPORTED TO NHTSA (COMPLAINT NUMBER: 11012748) FOR DRIVER SIDE FRONT COIL SPRING AS WELL AS TO MITSUBISHI NORTH AMERICA (BUT GOT NOWHERE).
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-03-19
- VIN: JA4MT41X07U
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: I PURCHASED MY 2007 MITSUBISHI FROM QUAKERTOWN MITSUBISHI IN APRIL ON 2017. IN THE LAST MONTH MY CAR WILL BE STUCK IN THE PARK POSITION WHEN TRYING TO MOVE OUT OF PARK THE CARE WON'T MOVE. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP TO GET MY CAR LOOKED AT. WHEN I MADE THE APPOINTMENT I WAS NOT TOLD THAT I WOULD BE CHARGED A 59.95 DIAGNOSTIC FEE. I DID NOT PAY THE FEE BECAUSE I DIDN'T HAVE THE FUNDS. THEY DID REPLACE MY WIPERS PER THE RECALL. I HAVEN'T HAD ANY OTHER PROBLEMS UNTIL NOW. I MAKE MONTHLY PAYMENTS ON THIS CAR AND STILL OWE OVER 9 THOUSAND ON THIS CAR.
VISIBILITY PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-04-02

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-04-03
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE REAR GLASS SHATTERED WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED BY A POLICE OFFICER AND A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE OFFICER INFORMED THE CONTACT TO PARK THE VEHICLE DUE TO THE FAILURE. THE DEALER (PERUZZI MITSUBISHI, 130 LINCOLN HWY, FAIRLESS HILLS, PA 19030) WAS NOTIFIED AND STATED THAT THERE WAS NO RECALL TO COVER THE REPAIR. THE INSURANCE COMPANY WAS NOTIFIED AND WAS TO INSPECT THE VEHICLE AND COVER THE REPLACEMENT OF THE REAR GLASS. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE MANUFACTURER INDICATED THAT THERE WAS NO RECALL FOR THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE VIN AND FAILURE MILEAGE WERE NOT AVAILABLE.
SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-01-02
- VIN: JA4MT41X27Z
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: ON JANUARY 2, 2018 OUR LOCAL OVERNIGHT TEMPERATURE WAS A NEGATIVE (-)20 DEGREES F. THAT MORNING WHILE STILL IN MY DRIVEWAY, BOTH FRONT COIL SPRINGS BROKE AND THE RIGHT FRONT COIL SPRING PENETRATED THE INNER SIDEWALL OF THE 18" TIRE AND THIS RESULTED IN THE TIRE BECOMING TWO DISTINCT PIECES. IF THIS HAD HAPPENED WHILE DRIVING ON THE ROAD, IT COULD HAVE RESULTED IN A SERIOUS AND POSSIBLE DEADLY ACCIDENT. UPON CONTACTING MY DEALER, I WAS TOLD THAT UPON SEARCHING THE MITSUBISHI DATABASE, THAT A TSB 14-33-002 WAS NO LONGER POSTED AT THE DEALER INTERNET ACCESS POINT, APPARENTLY IT HAD BEEN PURGED FROM THE SYSTEM. I LEARNED OF TSB-14-33-002 BY OTHER SEARCHING ONLINE. MITSUBISHI WOULD NOT COVER THE FAILURE, DESPITE IT'S SERIOUSNESS TO PUBLIC SAFETY. I AM CONCERNED THAT 2007 MITSUBISHI OUTLANDERS HAVE A METALLURGY PROBLEM OR FAULTY MANUFACTURER'S DESIGN, AND SHOULD BE THE SUBJECT OF A NATIONAL SAFETY RECALL - AT LEAST IN COLDER CLIMATE STATES THAT USE CALCIUM CHLORIDE OR SALT ON THEIR ROADS. I HAVE THE CAR CURRENTLY IN A HEATED GARAGE AWAITING AN INSPECTION BY NHTSA OR MITSUBISHI. MY COMPLAINT IN WRITING TO MITSUBISHI REMAINS UNANSWERED. I SUGGEST THAT IF THESE VEHICLE SUFFER FAILED FRONT COIL SPRINGS AND ARE INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT, THAT THE BROKEN COIL SPRING WILL BE CONSIDERED A RESULT OF THE ACCIDENT RATHER THAN THE CAUSE OF THE ACCIDENT. IF THERE IS A CHAIN COLLISION INVOLVING OTHER VEHICLES, THEN AGAIN THE DRIVER MAY BE BLAMED AS THE CAUSE, WHEN IN REALITY THE FAILED SPRING WAS THE CAUSE. SUGGESTION: NHTSA MIGHT CHECK FOR ALL SUB-ZERO TEMPERATURE ACCIDENTS INVOLVING 2007 OUTLANDERS AND DETERMINE IF THEY SUFFERED BROKEN FRONT COIL SPRINGS AND A TORN UP FRONT TIRE. PHOTOS ATTACHED TO THIS REPORT. ADDITIONAL PHOTOS CAN BE TAKEN ONCE THE REPLACEMENT $260. SPRINGS ARRIVE AND WE REPLACE THEM, DOCUMENTING OUR FINDINGS. I AM WILLING TO SUBMIT FOR METALLURGY TESTS.

- Consequence: Brake lights that are inoperative would not warn other drivers that the vehicle is stopping, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Mitsubishi will notify owners, and dealers will replace the brake light switch with a new one, free of charge. The recall began in mid-October 2014. Owners may contact Mitsubishi customer service at 1-888-648-7820. Mitsubishi's number for this recall is SR-14-010. Note: This recall is an expansion of recall 08V-680 and does not include any vehicles that were previously recalled.
- Manufacturer: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc.
- Components: STEERING:HYDRAULIC POWER ASSIST:HOSE, PIPING, AND CONNECTIONS
- Summary: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (Mitsubishi) is recalling certain model year 2013 Outlander vehicles equipped with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Additionally, Mitusbishi is recalling certain 2007-2012 Outlander vehicles that received replacement 6-speed automatic transmissions during servicing. The transmissions in these vehicles have insufficient clearance between the power steering pressure tube and the converter housing of the automatic transmission. As a result of the contact, the power steering pressure tube may develop a hole and leak power steering fluid.
- Consequence: A power steering fluid leak could result in a loss of steering assistance, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Mitsubishi will notify owners, and dealers will replace the power steering pressure tube and return tube, free of charge. The recall began in August 2014. Owners may contact Mitsubishi customer service at 1-888-648-7820. Mitsubishi's number for this recall is SR-14-006.
- Manufacturer: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc.
- Components: POWER TRAIN:TRANSFER CASE (4-WHEEL DRIVE)
- Summary: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (Mitsubishi) is recalling certain model year 2007 and 2009 Outlander vehicles. During servicing, the affected vehicles were repaired with replacement transfer case assemblies whose oil seal may come out of position.
- Consequence: If the oil seal dislodges, automatic transmission fluid (ATF) may enter the transfer case assembly, reducing the ATF pressure in the transmission, resulting in poor transmission shifting or the inability of the vehicle to be driven, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Mitsubishi will notify owners, and dealers will replace the transfer assembly, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on July 30, 2014. Owners may contact Mitsubishi customer service at 1-888-648-7820. Mitsubishi's number for this recall is SR-14-005.

- Summary: MITSUBISHI IS RECALLING 5,400 MY 2007-2008 OUTLANDER PASSENGER VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD IN OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE STATES OF CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, IOWA, KENTUCKY, MAINE, MARYLAND, MASSACHUSETTS, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT, VIRGINIA, WEST VIRGINIA, WISCONSIN, AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA. FOR VEHICLES WITHOUT AN ELECTRIC POWER SEAT, THE FLOOR HARNESS CONNECTOR FOR THE POWER SEAT IS PLACED DIRECTLY ON THE FLOORBOARD UNDERNEATH THE CARPETING (VEHICLES WITH POWER SEATS ALREADY HAVE THE HARNESS ELEVATED). IF A VEHICLE OCCUPANT ENTERS THE VEHICLE WITH A SUFFICIENT AMOUNT OF SNOW ON THEIR FEET CONTAINING ROAD SALT, IT IS POSSIBLE FOR THE MELTED SNOW MIXTURE TO SOAK THE CARPET AND ALLOW THE SALT-WATER SOLUTION TO COME INTO CONTACT WITH THE UNUSED POWER SEAT HARNESS CONNECTOR.
- Consequence: THE CONNECTOR TERMINAL MAY CORRODE AND ALLOW CURRENT TO FLOW, RESULTING IN THE GRADUAL HEATING AND MELTING OF THE CONNECTOR AND MAY RESULT IN A FIRE.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL RELOCATE THE FLOOR HARNESS FROM BENEATH BOTH THE PASSENGER AND DRIVER SEATS TO ABOVE THE CARPET AND AWAY FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE FLOORBOARD TO PREVENT CONTACT WITH ANY FUTURE MELT SOLUTION. THE RECALL BEGAN ON APRIL 7, 2008. OWNERS MAY CONTACT MITSUBISHI AT 1-800-222-0037.

I spent a lot of time researching SUVs and ultimately decided that the Mitsubishi Outlander is the best choice for me in terms of value, reliability, looks, and options. Although I initially considered the Endeavor, I found a fantastic deal on the Outlander and have been driving it for less than a month. I am constantly surprised by the great features that I keep discovering, and the engine sounds and looks great. The build quality seems solid and the SUV has an awesome value, especially when purchased used.

You won't find a better riding crossover SUV. It has more features than any other vehicle of its type on the road, including the top-end Lexus models. The navigation system is the best in its class.

Hi there! As someone who isn't really into cars, I know how important it is to have a vehicle that you can rely on to get you where you need to go. Comfort is also a big factor for me when it comes to driving. Living in Minneapolis, MN, I need a car that can handle snowy weather, and luckily the Outlander fits the bill. With good highway MPG (23-27), it's also a great choice for longer trips. Overall, if you're looking for a small SUV that's reliable, has solid features, and won't break the bank, I highly recommend the Outlander!

Hi there! We test drove three different cars - the Toyota RAV4 v6, Nissan Murano, and the Outlander XLS. We were really excited to try out the RAV4 after reading so many positive reviews, but unfortunately it didn't quite live up to our expectations. While the engine was great, we found the rest of the car to be a bit disappointing. The interior design felt a bit outdated and not really our style. We both agreed on this. Additionally, while the RAV4 boasts great gas mileage, we did find that the required premium fuel ended up reducing the mpg to about 26-27 when price adjusted, which was a bit of a bummer. The Nissan Murano was also a nice car, but it was a bit too expensive for our budget and the interior felt a bit too fancy for our taste.

This new Outlander is a significant improvement over the outgoing model, and it even outperforms the new Rav4 and C-RV in most respects. It offers great value, more features, and excellent quality. However, it's worth noting that there is a noticeable torque steer issue when accelerating, which can be a bit disconcerting. Additionally, the car can feel a bit unstable on the freeway, and the rocking movements caused by braking and accelerating may cause discomfort for some passengers. Overall, Mitsubishi has made a commendable effort with this new Outlander, but there is still room for improvement in terms of driving smoothness.

I really want to like this vehicle. It drives well under 140 kmph, but gets a bit floaty and twitchy over that speed. Unfortunately, the AWD is not up to the quality and usability of either Subaru or Audi. The road noise is higher than expected and the doors make a disappointing clangy sound. While the 6-speed auto transmission with paddle shifters is cool, the constant downshifting and annoying 400 rpm drop after every downshift make long trips less enjoyable.

Overall, it sounds like the car did a decent job on your 1100-mile, 10-day camping trip with three kids and gear. However, it's unfortunate that your son finds it twitchy to drive. On the bright side, the 4WD/AWD seems to work well on icy roads with all-season tires, so that's a plus. It's a shame that the road noise is too high and that it feels cheaply made.
