2008 Mitsubishi Outlander problems
The Mitsubishi Outlander (Japanese: 三菱・アウトランダー, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Autorandā) is a compact crossover SUV manufactured by Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors since 2001. It was originally known as the Mitsubishi Airtrek (Japanese: 三菱・エアトレック, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Eatorekku) when it was introduced in Japan.
The original Airtrek name was chosen to "describe the vehicle's ability to transport its passengers on adventure-packed journeys in a 'free-as-a-bird' manner", and was "coined from Air and Trek to express the idea of footloose, adventure-filled motoring pleasure." The Outlander nameplate which replaced it evoked a "feeling of journeying to distant, unexplored lands in search of adventure."
The second generation of the vehicle was introduced in 2006 and all markets including Japan adopted the Outlander name, although production of the older version continued in parallel. It was built on the company's GS platform, and used various engines developed by Mitsubishi, Volkswagen, and PSA Peugeot Citroën. PSA's Citroën C-Crosser and Peugeot 4007, which were manufactured by Mitsubishi in Japan, are badge engineered versions of the second generation Outlander. Global sales achieved the 1.5 million unit milestone in October 2016, 15 years after its market launch.
As part of the third generation line-up, Mitsubishi launched in January 2013 a plug-in hybrid model called Outlander PHEV. As of January 2022, global sales totaled about 300,000 units, and according to JATO Dynamics, the Outlander PHEV is the world's all-time best selling plug-in hybrid since December 2018. As of 2019, Europe is the leading market with over 126,000 units sold through January 2019, and the Outlander plug-in hybrid listed as Europe's best-selling plug-in hybrid car for five years running, 2015 to 2019.
The fourth-generation model was released 2021. Following Mitsubishi's entry to Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance, the fourth-generation Outlander is based on the Rogue/X-Trail, which is built on the CMF-CD platform.

Common 2008 Mitsubishi Outlander problems
Based on the complaints and issues reported by owners of the 2008 Mitsubishi Outlander, several common problems have been identified:
- CVT Transmission Problems:
The continuous variable transmission (CVT) in the 2008 Outlander may experience issues such as transmission slipping or the car not moving when the transmission is in gear. Regularly inspecting the transmission fluid level and changing the fluid as recommended can help prevent these problems. If severe issues arise, a rebuild or replacement of the transmission may be necessary.
- Crank Position Sensor Failure:
A common problem reported by owners is the failure of the crank position sensor, leading to a no-start condition. This issue can be caused by timing belt/chain or head gasket work that affects the sensor's alignment. Replacing the crank sensor located on the backside of the engine can resolve this problem, although if the issue persists, further investigation into the timing system may be required.
- Water Pump Issues:
Owners have reported coolant leaks on the passenger side of the vehicle and engine overheating due to a leaking water pump. In the 2008 Outlander, the water pump on the V6 engine is located underneath the timing belt, while on the 4-cylinder engine, it is external and driven by the drive belt. Replacing the water pump, often recommended alongside a timing belt replacement, can address these coolant-related problems.
- Broken Door Handle:
Another common issue with the 2008 Mitsubishi Outlander is the door handle breaking off, especially when pulled too hard from the edge. Fortunately, replacing the door handle in the 2nd generation Outlander is relatively straightforward and does not require removing the door panel. By following simple steps like removing the rubber grommet and trim cover, owners can replace the door handle without extensive disassembly.
These problems highlight key areas of concern for 2008 Mitsubishi Outlander owners, emphasizing the importance of regular maintenance and prompt attention to any emerging issues to ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.
Is a 2008 Mitsubishi Outlander a good vehicle?

- Summary: THERE'S A RECALL ON THE FRONT CROSS MEMBER/SUB-FRAME,WHICH IS IN GOOD CONDITION,BUT NOT THE BACK ONE. WHICH MINE JUST ACTUALLY RIPPED! IT STARTED DRIVING ODD,LIKE THE BACK END DOESN'T STAY BEHIND IT. WOULD KIND OF SHUDDER AT TAKEOFF, AND SOUNDS AWFUL! ESPECIALLY NOTICEABLE GOING SLOWLY ON A DIRT DRIVEWAY WITH BUMPS.EVEN WITH BRAND NEW SUSPENSION,TIRES,CV-SHAFTS,BEARINGS,EVERYTHING.IT STILL DID IT.THEN YESTERDAY IT STARTED REALLY BANGING AND THUMPING UNDERNEATH.IT WAS HARD TO FIGURE OUT BECAUSE IT WOULD HAPPEN AT DIFFERENT TIMES.SOMETIMES CORNERS,SOMETIMES GOING STRAIGHT,ESPECIALLY WHEN THE BODY WOULD TWIST. SO I STOPPED AND CHECKED. I NOTICED THE VEHICLE WAS DROPPED AT LEAST AN INCH ON ONE SIDE. IT HAS BRAND NEW STRUTS IN IT, SO I LOOKED CLOSER. ON THE DRIVERS SIDE REAR, WHERE THE LATERAL CONTROL ARM ATTACHES TO IT,THE ACTUAL SUB FRAME/CROSS MEMBER IS TORN! IT IS WAY TO NEW TO HAVE THE SUB-FRAME ROTTED SO BAD THAT IT JUST RIPS.OBVIOUSLY MITSUBISHI FORGOT TO TREAT THAT CROSS-MEMBER AS WELL! OR JUST GOT THE TWO BACKWARDS IN THE RECALL? THIS IS THE 2008 OUTLANDER V6,4WD,XLS. ALSO,NOT A SAFETY ISSUE,BUT STILL NOT NORMAL FOR THE AGE, ALL MY PAINT ON THE FRONT BUMPER IS JUST FALLING OFF.IN CHUNKY FLAKES?

- Summary: MITSUBISHI IS RECALLING 39,711 MY 2008-2009 OUTLANDER AND LACER VEHICLES. INCORRECT MATERIAL COMPOSITION OF THE BRAKE BOOSTER CHECK VALVE MAY CAUSE THE CHECK VALVE TO STICK CLOSED WHEN THE ENGINE IS SHUT OFF. WHEN THE VEHICLE IS RE-STARTED AND PUT INTO MOTION, UNDER CERTAIN DRIVING CONDITIONS (VERY SLOW VEHICLE MANEUVERS), THERE MAY BE INSUFFICIENT INITIAL BRAKING ASSIST.
- Consequence: THIS MAY TEMPORARILY INCREASE THE STOPPING DISTANCE OF THE VEHICLE AND THEREFORE INCREASE THE RISK OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE BRAKE BOOSTER CHECK VALVE FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING APRIL 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT MITSUBISHI AT 1-800-222-0037.
- Manufacturer: MITSUBISHI MOTORS NORTH AMERICA, INC.
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH
- Summary: MITSUBISHI IS RECALLING 21,493 MY 2007-2008 OUTLANDER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH LED TYPE STOP LAMPS AND DISTRIBUTED IN THE UNITED STATES AND PUERTO RICO. THE BRAKE LAMP SWITCH MAY MALFUNCTION AND CAUSE THE STOP LAMPS TO NOT ILLUMINATE DURING BRAKE APPLICATION.
- Consequence: THE FAILURE OF THE BRAKE LAMPS TO ILLUMINATE WHEN THE BRAKES ARE APPLIED WILL NOT PROVIDE WARNING TO FOLLOWING TRAFFIC AND COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE STOP LAMP SWITCH. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING FEBRUARY 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT MITSUBISHI AT 1-800-222-0037.
- Manufacturer: MITSUBISHI MOTORS NORTH AMERICA, INC.

- Summary: MITSUBISHI IS RECALLING 5,400 MY 2007-2008 OUTLANDER PASSENGER VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD IN OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE STATES OF CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, IOWA, KENTUCKY, MAINE, MARYLAND, MASSACHUSETTS, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT, VIRGINIA, WEST VIRGINIA, WISCONSIN, AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA. FOR VEHICLES WITHOUT AN ELECTRIC POWER SEAT, THE FLOOR HARNESS CONNECTOR FOR THE POWER SEAT IS PLACED DIRECTLY ON THE FLOORBOARD UNDERNEATH THE CARPETING (VEHICLES WITH POWER SEATS ALREADY HAVE THE HARNESS ELEVATED). IF A VEHICLE OCCUPANT ENTERS THE VEHICLE WITH A SUFFICIENT AMOUNT OF SNOW ON THEIR FEET CONTAINING ROAD SALT, IT IS POSSIBLE FOR THE MELTED SNOW MIXTURE TO SOAK THE CARPET AND ALLOW THE SALT-WATER SOLUTION TO COME INTO CONTACT WITH THE UNUSED POWER SEAT HARNESS CONNECTOR.
- Consequence: THE CONNECTOR TERMINAL MAY CORRODE AND ALLOW CURRENT TO FLOW, RESULTING IN THE GRADUAL HEATING AND MELTING OF THE CONNECTOR AND MAY RESULT IN A FIRE.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL RELOCATE THE FLOOR HARNESS FROM BENEATH BOTH THE PASSENGER AND DRIVER SEATS TO ABOVE THE CARPET AND AWAY FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE FLOORBOARD TO PREVENT CONTACT WITH ANY FUTURE MELT SOLUTION. THE RECALL BEGAN ON APRIL 7, 2008. OWNERS MAY CONTACT MITSUBISHI AT 1-800-222-0037.

Just picked up the 08 and there's one word to describe it, WOW! I'm glad to hear that you're impressed. It's my first automatic in over 20 years. I'm happy to hear that the pickup is good and the paddle shifters still give you that 'standard' feeling. It's great to know that it's very roomy both in the front and back.

It's great to hear that your 2002 Mitsu Montero Sport XLS is still going strong and that you decided to 'trade down' to the 2008 Outlander. Just like the Montero, the Outlander is 100% made in Japan to last. While the 4 cylinder engine may not win drag races, it is peppy enough and the CVT is smooth. Although the engine can be a little on the loud side, overall it sounds like you're enjoying your new car!

I've been driving cars since I got my learner's license at 16. From a 1985 Ford Tempo GL to a 2001 Nissan Sentra GXE, I was ready for a change. Now that I'm 24, I wanted something with more cargo room, power, and comfort for driving friends around. That's why I decided to check out the compact SUV market and had four models on my list: the Hyundai Sante Fe, Nissan Rogue, Honda CR-V, and Mitsubishi Outlander. The Sante Fe has a smooth, quiet ride, but doesn't offer many options. The Rogue is pretty stylish, but feels underpowered and cramped. The CR-V has everything right, but is more expensive. For me, the Outlander strikes a good balance of everything.

I noticed the Honda CR-V and RAV4 first, and then looked at the Outlander last. I am really happy with my decision.

I thought my Jetta was fun to drive, but I never imagined that an SUV could handle even better, be more responsive, and generally be more fun to drive. Plus, I didn't have to downgrade to get a Mom-Mobile!

The trailer hitch adapter caught on fire due to the installation of a third-party part instead of the original part. Despite going to the dealer to request repairs and compensation for damages, they refused to help. However, if the original part had been installed, it would have been covered under warranty. Mitsubishi Motors Canada was also unable to assist, offering apologies but no resolution. It is disappointing that the dealer installed a third-party part, causing numerous electronic issues that required multiple visits to the dealership within the first year.

I have owned this car for two years now and I feel confident in providing an accurate review. While there are a few areas of concern, I would like to share my experience. Firstly, I have noticed that the paint and body quality could be improved as there are several dings and marks that make it look like it has been through a hail storm. Secondly, I have found that the bottom front windshield corners create large blind spots which have caused me to miss pedestrians or cars coming from the opposite corner on several occasions. The corner joining metal and the rear view mirrors create too large of a blind spot. Thirdly, the interior of the red model being black is not ideal, especially considering the other option was a light cream color. This has made the car uncomfortably hot at times. Lastly, the gas mileage could be better. Despite these concerns, I still enjoy driving this car and appreciate its other features.
