The Mitsubishi Outlander (Japanese: 三菱・アウトランダー, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Autorandā) is a compact crossover SUV manufactured by Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors since 2001. It was originally known as the Mitsubishi Airtrek (Japanese: 三菱・エアトレック, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Eatorekku) when it was introduced in Japan.

The original Airtrek name was chosen to "describe the vehicle's ability to transport its passengers on adventure-packed journeys in a 'free-as-a-bird' manner", and was "coined from Air and Trek to express the idea of footloose, adventure-filled motoring pleasure." The Outlander nameplate which replaced it evoked a "feeling of journeying to distant, unexplored lands in search of adventure."

The second generation of the vehicle was introduced in 2006 and all markets including Japan adopted the Outlander name, although production of the older version continued in parallel. It was built on the company's GS platform, and used various engines developed by Mitsubishi, Volkswagen, and PSA Peugeot Citroën. PSA's Citroën C-Crosser and Peugeot 4007, which were manufactured by Mitsubishi in Japan, are badge engineered versions of the second generation Outlander. Global sales achieved the 1.5 million unit milestone in October 2016, 15 years after its market launch.

As part of the third generation line-up, Mitsubishi launched in January 2013 a plug-in hybrid model called Outlander PHEV. As of January 2022, global sales totaled about 300,000 units, and according to JATO Dynamics, the Outlander PHEV is the world's all-time best selling plug-in hybrid since December 2018. As of 2019, Europe is the leading market with over 126,000 units sold through January 2019, and the Outlander plug-in hybrid listed as Europe's best-selling plug-in hybrid car for five years running, 2015 to 2019.

The fourth-generation model was released 2021. Following Mitsubishi's entry to Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance, the fourth-generation Outlander is based on the Rogue/X-Trail, which is built on the CMF-CD platform.

Common 2009 Mitsubishi Outlander problems

The Mitsubishi Outlander, produced between 2007 and 2013, is known for several common problems that have been reported by its owners. These issues range from transmission problems to faulty sensors and door handle failures.

One of the most frequently reported problems is related to the transmission, specifically the constant variable transmission (CVT). The CVT can experience slipping, which may cause the car to not move when the transmission is in gear. Regularly inspecting and changing the transmission fluid can help prevent these issues. If there is a problem with the transmission, it might require rebuilding or replacement.

Another issue is related to the crank sensor, which can cause a no-start condition. If the timing belt/chain or head gasket has been worked on, the timing could be off, leading to this problem. The crank sensor is located on the backside of the engine, and replacing it might fix the issue. However, if the timing is off, there could be a more significant problem with the timing.

The water pump is another component that has been known to cause issues in the Mitsubishi Outlander. Coolant leaking on the passenger side of the vehicle or engine overheating can be indicators of a failing water pump. On the V6 engine, the water belt is located underneath the timing belt, and it is recommended to replace the timing belt at the same time as the water pump. On the 4-cylinder engine, the water pump is external and driven by the drive belt, which also needs to be replaced if the water pump is failing.

The door handle can break off if pulled too hard from the edge. However, replacing the door handle in the 2nd gen Outlander is a relatively easy DIY repair, as the door panel does not need to be removed. Instead, the rubber grommet from the side of the door, the star bit, and the trim cover from the door handle can be removed to replace the door handle.

These are some of the most common problems reported by Mitsubishi Outlander owners between 2007 and 2013. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent some of these issues, but it is essential to be aware of these potential problems when considering purchasing a used Mitsubishi Outlander from this generation.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-31
  • VIN: JA4MT41X39Z
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The MMCS system has a known bug. As of October 2023 the date and time of the system has defaulted back to 2004. The defect has disabled features such as maintenance records that are logged since new. The defect has been reported to the dealer and they have acknowledged there is currently no fix. The dealer also noted that replacing the GPS receiver does not correct the problem and it is likely a head unit firmware issue. There are hundreds of complaints via Internet forums that Mitsubishi equipped MMCS models from approximately 2007 through 2014 are affected. The only way to retrieve any data in the system is to disconnect the GPS receiver and manually input the current date. That fix disables the navigation system in lieu of having all the data the system has stored since new which could be a safety issue for some owners. This is an unacceptable problem for most owners.

If the headlights and/or windshield wipers fail, the driver could have reduced visibility. If the tail lights fail, the vehicle could be less visible. Either condition increases the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Mitsubishi will notify owners, and dealers will replace the affected ECU, free of charge. The recall began on June 15 ,2015. Owners may contact Mitsubishi customer service at 1-888-648-7820. Mitsubishi's number for this recall is SR-15-002.

  • Manufacturer: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc.
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH

  • Manufacturer: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc.
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE:GASOLINE:BELTS AND ASSOCIATED PULLEYS
  • Summary: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (Mitsubishi) is recalling certain model year 2008-2011 Lancer, Lancer Evolution, and Outlander; 2009-2011 Lancer Sportback, Lancer Rilliart, and Lancer Sportback Ralliart; and 2011 Outlander Sport vehicles. The affected vehicles, manufactured with 4B1 engines, have an engine pulley and belt arrangement for turning the alternator, the cooling fan and the power steering pump (if equipped). These pulleys may experience unusual wear and allow for belt detachment.
  • Consequence: If the drive belt detaches, the battery may discharge, resulting in an engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Mitsubishi will notify owners, and dealers will replace the drive belt with a rubber belt. Drive pulleys that are excessively worn will be replaced. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on October 15, 2014. Owners may contact Mitsubishi customer service at 1-888-648-7820. • Manufacturer: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc.
  • Components: STEERING:HYDRAULIC POWER ASSIST:HOSE, PIPING, AND CONNECTIONS
  • Summary: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (Mitsubishi) is recalling certain model year 2013 Outlander vehicles equipped with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Additionally, Mitusbishi is recalling certain 2007-2012 Outlander vehicles that received replacement 6-speed automatic transmissions during servicing. The transmissions in these vehicles have insufficient clearance between the power steering pressure tube and the converter housing of the automatic transmission. As a result of the contact, the power steering pressure tube may develop a hole and leak power steering fluid.
  • Consequence: A power steering fluid leak could result in a loss of steering assistance, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Mitsubishi will notify owners, and dealers will replace the power steering pressure tube and return tube, free of charge. The recall began in August 2014. Owners may contact Mitsubishi customer service at 1-888-648-7820. Mitsubishi's number for this recall is SR-14-006.

  • Manufacturer: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc.
  • Components: POWER TRAIN:TRANSFER CASE (4-WHEEL DRIVE)

  • Consequence: If the oil seal dislodges, automatic transmission fluid (ATF) may enter the transfer case assembly, reducing the ATF pressure in the transmission, resulting in poor transmission shifting or the inability of the vehicle to be driven, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Mitsubishi will notify owners, and dealers will replace the transfer assembly, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on July 30, 2014. Owners may contact Mitsubishi customer service at 1-888-648-7820. Mitsubishi's number for this recall is SR-14-005.

Negative 2009 Mitsubishi Outlander car reviews

  1. Geovanny Pollich 2025-01-02

The Outlander is a great car overall. It has an awesome sound system (stock). However, I have had to take it in for warranty repairs three times in a year. The molding on the kick plate came off, the A/C adapter stopped working, and there was excess glue on the windshield which caused all the wiring to be exposed. I never had these problems with my Honda. Dealing with these issues can be time-consuming, and my time is valuable. The paddle shifters are not very useful, as not many people use them in a 4-cylinder SUV. Additionally, I sometimes have to raise my voice to be heard by the Bluetooth speaker.

Positive 2009 Mitsubishi Outlander car reviews

This is only my second day with this 'CUV', but I can already tell (as long as no problems come up) that it will be a part of our family for at least the next 5-6 years. It's incredibly comfortable, rides smoothly, and has all the space in the world for cargo. We test drove several competitors (including the Rav4, Santa Fe, Equinox, and Forester), but the Outlander was the clear winner.

I was researching several SUVs and this one really stood out to me. Although it can be a little noisy, I really enjoy the drive. The storage compartments, as well as the storage available in the back, are great features. It's perfect for tall people to ride in the back, which is important for my family since most of us are tall. I absolutely love it and can't wait to take it on a trip to really put it to the test. I'm surprised I don't see more of them on the roads!

I recently purchased the Outlander after test driving the Rav4 and CRV. I was drawn to the Outlander's appearance and its affordable price, unlike the Rav4 which I believe is overpriced. While the Honda CRV has better acceleration and the Rav4 feels more like a car when driving, the Outlander's heavier weight provides more stability when taking curves, although it may be a bit slow to start. However, it can be faster if you use the techtronic options. Overall, I believe the Outlander is worth the money compared to the Rav4 and CRV. Instead of worrying about resale value, I encourage you to simply enjoy driving it with no regrets.

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your 09 Outlander! It sounds like the handling is really good and you're a fan of the steering. While the navigation can be a bit complicated at times, it's great to hear that the stereo has such strong bass and great sound. It's understandable that the fuel economy is just okay, but averaging around 23-26MPG (highway) is still pretty good. I'm happy to hear that all the features are working great so far and that you're enjoying driving it to work. Thanks for sharing your experience with me!

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my Outlander ES (FWD) base + Conv. pkg in Black that I bought on 28 June 2009. I must say, this vehicle runs great and performs as expected or even better, especially considering that it has a 4 Cyl engine. On a 70 mile straight highway, I was able to get about 29 mpg, and on my usual 20 mile trip (80% Hwy), I get about 25-26 mpg. I did notice a very faint buzzing sound, but I'm sure it's nothing major. The cargo room is fantastic, and the back seat comfortably seats 3 average-sized adults. The seats are nice and firm, making long drives very comfortable. Overall, I am extremely happy with my purchase. Thank you for taking the time to read my review!
