2011 Mitsubishi Outlander problems
The Mitsubishi Outlander (Japanese: 三菱・アウトランダー, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Autorandā) is a compact crossover SUV manufactured by Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors since 2001. It was originally known as the Mitsubishi Airtrek (Japanese: 三菱・エアトレック, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Eatorekku) when it was introduced in Japan.
The original Airtrek name was chosen to "describe the vehicle's ability to transport its passengers on adventure-packed journeys in a 'free-as-a-bird' manner", and was "coined from Air and Trek to express the idea of footloose, adventure-filled motoring pleasure." The Outlander nameplate which replaced it evoked a "feeling of journeying to distant, unexplored lands in search of adventure."
The second generation of the vehicle was introduced in 2006 and all markets including Japan adopted the Outlander name, although production of the older version continued in parallel. It was built on the company's GS platform, and used various engines developed by Mitsubishi, Volkswagen, and PSA Peugeot Citroën. PSA's Citroën C-Crosser and Peugeot 4007, which were manufactured by Mitsubishi in Japan, are badge engineered versions of the second generation Outlander. Global sales achieved the 1.5 million unit milestone in October 2016, 15 years after its market launch.
As part of the third generation line-up, Mitsubishi launched in January 2013 a plug-in hybrid model called Outlander PHEV. As of January 2022, global sales totaled about 300,000 units, and according to JATO Dynamics, the Outlander PHEV is the world's all-time best selling plug-in hybrid since December 2018. As of 2019, Europe is the leading market with over 126,000 units sold through January 2019, and the Outlander plug-in hybrid listed as Europe's best-selling plug-in hybrid car for five years running, 2015 to 2019.
The fourth-generation model was released 2021. Following Mitsubishi's entry to Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance, the fourth-generation Outlander is based on the Rogue/X-Trail, which is built on the CMF-CD platform.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-01-11
- VIN: JA4AS3AW8BU
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I purchased the 2011 Mitsubishi Outlander in 2015. In January 2018 the engine seized up while driving and was not repairable. Thankfully I was able to pull over and no one was hurt. The vehicle was only 7 years old with only 112,846 miles and I still had a loan on the vehicle for approxiamtly $10,000. The vehicle was at the time worth the cost left to pay it off. I consulted many Mitsubishi dealerships around the country and the only fix as a new engine for the vehicle which was an additional $10,000 and there were no engines anywhere in the country that could be found. The reason is that Mitsubishi decommissioned this Outlander model in 2013 due to the issue with the engine - essentially it was built like a snowmobile engine. The belt snapped and there was no repairing it - only replacing the entire engine. Mitsubishi knew this was an issue with this model - they decommissioned it only after 2 years on the market and they didn't issue a recall until 2018 - 5 years later! In the mean time I had found others around the coutnry with the same issue and we were all left with auto loans and no working vehicle. This is extremely poor business tactics and dishonest and very unsafe. I was lucky I was not driving on a freeway at the time when the engine seized up and the vehicle bucked like wild horse - it could have resulted in a major accident. It is dishonest to issue a recall 5 years after the company knew the vehicle had an issue and most likely all of the models had been sold or abandoned by this time so they don't have to pay for many repairs since there are not many that have lasted until 2018 to be repaired. A complaint has also been filed with the Minnesota State Attorney General. I was stuck with the $10,000 loan on a car that was now worth $0 and Mitsubishi at that time acted they had no idea what was wrong with it or why this happened. All lies.

- Summary: I WAS DRIVING ON I 75, ME, 2 PASSENGERS AND 7 ANIMALS DEEP. WHEN OUT OF NO WHERE MY ACCELERATION STOPPED AND THE RPMS REVED, THE CAR STARTED TO SLOW DOWN, I WASN'T ABLE TO ACCELERATE ANYMORE. I COSTED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND WE WERE STUCK.! MY CVT TRANSMISSION IS BAD.
SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-07-15
- VIN: JA4AR4AU3BZ
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: THIS MODEL VEHICLE HAS A BAD DESIGN FLAW THAT MITSUBISHI REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE. THE LOCATION OF THE AIR CONDITIONER DISCHARGE CAUSES WATER TO DRIP DIRECTLY ONTO THE SUB FRAME BELOW. THIS DRIPPING CORRODED A HOLE THROUGH MY SUB FRAME DEEMING IT STRUCTURALLY UNSOUND AND UNSAFE TO DRIVE, AND CAUSED IT FAILED MY STATE INSPECTION. MY LOCAL DEALER AND MITSUBISHI BOTH REFUSED TO COVER THE COST OF REPLACING THE PART SINCE NO RECALL CURRENTLY EXISTS. I ENDED UP GETTING A USED PART FROM A LOCAL SHOP FOR HALF THE COST OF WHAT THE DEALER QUOTED ME. I ALSO HAD THE MECHANIC JURY RIG AN AC DISCHARGE TUBE EXTENSION TO DIRECT THE WATER AWAY FROM THE SUB FRAME SO IT WOULDN'T KEEP HAPPENING. HAD MY STATE INSPECTOR NOT CAUGHT THIS CORROSION, I WOULD BE STILL DRIVING THE UNSAFE VEHICLE. A COMPROMISED SUB FRAME COULD RESULT IN NUMEROUS FAILURES THAT COULD CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. I WAS LUCKY IT DID NOT GET TO THAT POINT. IT IS CLEAR THE CORROSION IS A DIRECT RESULT OF THE AC DISCHARGE, RATHER THAN NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR. THE REST OF THE SUB FRAME AND SUSPENSION THROUGH OUT THE VEHICLE DOES NOT HAVE ANYWHERE NEAR THE LEVEL OR CORROSION THAT IS DIRECTLY BELOW THE AC DISCHARGE TUBE. GOOGLE SEARCHING THIS PROBLEM MAKES IT CLEAR I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE. THERE ARE OTHER MODELS OF OUTLANDERS AND OUTLANDER SPORTS THAT SEEM TO HAVE THE SAME ISSUE. THIS NEEDS TO BE INVESTIGATED SO A RECALL CAN BE ISSUED FOR ALL MODELS WITH THIS DESIGN.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE BEARING INSIDE THE TRANSMISSION WAS ABOUT TO FRACTURE, WHICH CAUSED THE NOISE. THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS A KNOWN ISSUE. THE CONTACT WAS REFERRED TO NHTSA. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THE WARRANTY WAS EXPIRED AND THAT THE CONTACT WAS NOT THE ORIGINAL OWNER. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 69,000.
POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-03-01
- VIN: JA4AP4AUXBZ
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
- Summary: I KNOW THIS CAR HAS FOUR RECALLS ON IT. BUT I'M HAVING ISSUES WITH WHAT IT FEELS LIKE TO BE THE TRANSMISSION. I HAVE BEEN GOOGLING SLOW OR SLUGGISH ACCELERATION ISSUES AND OTHER PEOPLE HAVE BEEN HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM. THEN I CAME ACROSS A RECALL FOR THE OUTLANDER SPORT INVOLVING THE CVT IN NEWER MODELS. I DON'T KNOW IF THOSE CVT ISSUES ARE THE SAME ONES MY CAR IS HAVING. BUT IS BECOMING A PAIN IN THE BUTT TO TRY AND ACCELERATE FAST ENOUGH ON THE ROAD OR THE HIGHWAY TO GET OUT OF PEOPLES WAY OR TO MOVE JUST NOTICING PEOPLE GOING AROUND ME BECAUSE OF MY SLUGGISH ACCELERATION. I HAVE TO PRESS ON THE GAS PRETTY HARD TO EVEN GET UP TO ABOUT 20 OR 30 NOT TO MENTION WHAT SOUNDS LIKE MY MUFFLER IS HUMMING. I FEEL IT'S A DANGER TRYING TO ACCELERATE AND NOT GETTING UP TO THE SPEED TO MAKE A TURN OR GET ON THE HIGHWAY LIKE I SAID. I NOTICED THAT I HAVE TO PUT A SPECIFIC DATE AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS FORM BUT IT'S BEEN GOING ON FOR A WHILE NOW. I ACTUALLY WENT TO MITSUBISHI TO GET MY TRANSMISSION FLUID REPLACED AND THE GUY SAID THAT THIS ISSUE WILL GO AWAY BUT IT DIDN'T.

(Mitsubishi) is recalling certain model year 2009-2011 Lancer vehicles manufactured March 16, 2009, to March 30, 2011, 2010-2011 Lancer Sportback vehicles manufactured June 17, 2009, to December 1, 2010, 2010-2011 Lancer Evolution vehicles manufactured July 14, 2009, to January 7, 2011, 2009-2011 Outlander vehicles manufactured February 10, 2009, to June 22, 2011, and 2011 Outlander Sport vehicles manufactured August 26, 2010, to November 19, 2010. In the affected vehicles, the blower motor may fail.
- Consequence: Failure of the blower motor may reduce the performance of the windshield defroster, diminishing the driver's visibility and increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Mitsubishi will notify owners, and dealers will replace a suspect blower motor, free of charge. The recall began on June 15, 2015. Owners may contact Mitsubishi customer service at 1-888-648-7820. Mitsubishi's number for this recall is SR-15-003.
- Manufacturer: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc.
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE:GASOLINE:BELTS AND ASSOCIATED PULLEYS
- Summary: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (Mitsubishi) is recalling certain model year 2008-2011 Lancer, Lancer Evolution, and Outlander; 2009-2011 Lancer Sportback, Lancer Rilliart, and Lancer Sportback Ralliart; and 2011 Outlander Sport vehicles. The affected vehicles, manufactured with 4B1 engines, have an engine pulley and belt arrangement for turning the alternator, the cooling fan and the power steering pump (if equipped). These pulleys may experience unusual wear and allow for belt detachment.
- Consequence: If the drive belt detaches, the battery may discharge, resulting in an engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Mitsubishi will notify owners, and dealers will replace the drive belt with a rubber belt. Drive pulleys that are excessively worn will be replaced. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on October 15, 2014. Owners may contact Mitsubishi customer service at 1-888-648-7820. Mitsubishi's number for this recall is SR-14-009.

Additionally, Mitusbishi is recalling certain 2007-2012 Outlander vehicles that received replacement 6-speed automatic transmissions during servicing. The transmissions in these vehicles have insufficient clearance between the power steering pressure tube and the converter housing of the automatic transmission. As a result of the contact, the power steering pressure tube may develop a hole and leak power steering fluid.
- Consequence: A power steering fluid leak could result in a loss of steering assistance, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Mitsubishi will notify owners, and dealers will replace the power steering pressure tube and return tube, free of charge. The recall began in August 2014. Owners may contact Mitsubishi customer service at 1-888-648-7820. Mitsubishi's number for this recall is SR-14-006.

I've been searching for a new SUV for a year now. Every time I went to the grocery store, I would see two more vehicles just like my 06 Honda CRV, and in the same color too! However, the Outlander is not a CRV or RAV4, and that's a good thing. I test drove Honda, Toyota, Nissan, and Hyundai, but I ultimately traded my 06 Honda CRV for this car. The Outlander is sportier, has better seats, and is really fun to drive. I'm extremely happy with my decision!

I bought my 2011 Outlander used from the dealer in 2013, so I've had it for about 8 years now and it just hit 200,000km. At the time, my wife and I had two young children and a dog. We only put about 10,000 to 15,000 kilometers on it annually. The Outlander has been a fantastic machine, requiring little to no maintenance, great on gas, excellent in snow, and has a remarkable turning radius. The rear space is also great, with a drop-down back gate that is not commonly found. I had a hitch package installed and use it to pull a utility trailer when I need to, and I also installed a roof rack. We still take it on a 3k road trip annually and it never lets us down. On the negative side, there are a couple of minor issues not worth mentioning. However, if you are buying the vehicle for the third-row seating, it is really only suitable for young children under 8-10 years old, and certainly not for adults. Overall, my experience with this vehicle has been great, and based on its current performance, it should be good for another solid 70-100k.

I'm so glad I bought the Outlander! It's only got a few thousand miles on it so far, but it's been a great purchase. After reading professional tests, user reviews, and considering its historical reliability, I knew it was the perfect choice for me. Not only does it look tougher than the soccer mom CR-V, but it also costs much less than the RAV4. The warranty is excellent, although I hope I won't have to use it. The Outlander rides smoothly and quietly, and I'm getting about 25 MPG around the city with the 4 cylinder. I was a bit worried about buying my first 4 cylinder, but it performs great on the highway and uphill. It may be slow off the line, but the 6 speed transmission makes up for it when passing and climbing.

Hey there! I wanted to share my experience with Outlander. I know there are some negative reviews out there, but I've had my car for 5 years now and I have to say, it's been a great SUV overall. Sure, there are some minor flaws like road noise and a slight jerk when breaking at high speeds, but it's nothing major. Plus, it's an absolute beast in the snow - I've tested it out in several northeast snow storms! The handling is great and it's a reliable SUV. Don't let the negative reviews fool you - as an owner, I highly recommend it. In fact, I'm even planning on buying the 2016 model!

This car is fantastic! It's a great gas saver and comes with a lot of cool gadgets like Bluetooth, handsfree, and satellite radio. I love that it has a 5-speed manual gearbox that nobody else seems to have, and the 4WD is real, not just AWD. It's definitely the best car I've ever owned, and the warranty is unbeatable. The 4-cylinder engine has great power, and the car looks amazing both inside and out. Plus, the third row comes in handy when I need it. Overall, I couldn't be happier with everything about this car. I've been a Mitsubishi fan for life, having owned the Montero, Montero Sport, Mirage, and even the old pickups.

I bought a 2011 Mitsubishi outlander SE FWD grey in color in 09/2011. I have had nothing but problems! 1st the sunroof popped out of it sitting in the garage!!Mitsubishi 1st gave me the run around, and after much debate, they paid for it. Then a stress crack in the windshield. I paid for it myself because I got NOWHERE w/ mitsubishi. It runs terrible, I have to be careful getting out on the highway or I will get run over. the dealership says nothing is wrong w/ it! I can smell burning rubber, and so can everyone else! They say nothing is wrong! Now the PAINT is comming off!! Mitsubishi says its MY fault....driving conditions??? The running light FELL out going down the road, and low MPGs!!!

This car may not be the best option if you need a reliable vehicle to get to work and take care of your family. Unfortunately, there have been some electronic failures that prevent the car from starting, which can be costly and time-consuming. It can be frustrating to wait for an hour and try again, only to have to rent a car for the day. It's important to be aware of these issues before making a purchase. Especially if you have children and need a dependable car to get home safely.

Buying a 2011 model of this vehicle back in 2013 for $17k seemed like a good deal. Unfortunately, it hasn't lived up to my expectations. While it handles beautifully in the snow and has pretty good cargo space, the SE trim version has had a fair share of issues. Despite this, I'm grateful for the third row seating which has been very handy, and the attractive body design. Although we've had to replace a few parts such as the front wheel bearing, wiper motor, climate control blower motor, and outer tie rod ends, we've managed to keep it running for almost 200k miles. However, we've decided it's time to part ways with this vehicle. While it's had its challenges, I'm still a fan of Mitsubishi and have had great experiences with their other vehicles. For instance, my 2007 Eclipse has been one of the best cars I've ever owned and continues to run solidly even as it approaches the 200k mile mark. Thank you, Mitsubishi, for the memories and the lessons learned.

Hi there! I noticed that you mentioned you bought this car because it was advertised as the most fuel-efficient seven-seater vehicle. However, you're only getting 17-20 mpg, which is a bit disappointing. I can understand your frustration with the fuel economy computer, which seems to automatically erase the average after the car has been turned off for 6 hours or more. Have you tried contacting the manufacturer about this issue?
