2019 Mitsubishi Outlander problems

The Mitsubishi Outlander (Japanese: 三菱・アウトランダー, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Autorandā) is a compact crossover SUV manufactured by Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors since 2001. It was originally known as the Mitsubishi Airtrek (Japanese: 三菱・エアトレック, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Eatorekku) when it was introduced in Japan.

The original Airtrek name was chosen to "describe the vehicle's ability to transport its passengers on adventure-packed journeys in a 'free-as-a-bird' manner", and was "coined from Air and Trek to express the idea of footloose, adventure-filled motoring pleasure." The Outlander nameplate which replaced it evoked a "feeling of journeying to distant, unexplored lands in search of adventure."

The second generation of the vehicle was introduced in 2006 and all markets including Japan adopted the Outlander name, although production of the older version continued in parallel. It was built on the company's GS platform, and used various engines developed by Mitsubishi, Volkswagen, and PSA Peugeot Citroën. PSA's Citroën C-Crosser and Peugeot 4007, which were manufactured by Mitsubishi in Japan, are badge engineered versions of the second generation Outlander. Global sales achieved the 1.5 million unit milestone in October 2016, 15 years after its market launch.

As part of the third generation line-up, Mitsubishi launched in January 2013 a plug-in hybrid model called Outlander PHEV. As of January 2022, global sales totaled about 300,000 units, and according to JATO Dynamics, the Outlander PHEV is the world's all-time best selling plug-in hybrid since December 2018. As of 2019, Europe is the leading market with over 126,000 units sold through January 2019, and the Outlander plug-in hybrid listed as Europe's best-selling plug-in hybrid car for five years running, 2015 to 2019.

The fourth-generation model was released 2021. Following Mitsubishi's entry to Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance, the fourth-generation Outlander is based on the Rogue/X-Trail, which is built on the CMF-CD platform.

Common 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander problems

Based on the search results, there are a few common problems with the Mitsubishi Outlander 2019, primarily related to the vehicle's transmission and fuel consumption.

Firstly, several owners have reported issues with the car's transmission, specifically when starting from a dead stop. The vehicle may not shift smoothly or at all, requiring the driver to take their foot off the gas pedal to force a shift. This problem has been reported to occur around 30,000 miles and has persisted despite multiple trips to the dealership for servicing. The dealership has been unable to diagnose the issue due to a lack of service codes indicating a problem, leaving owners frustrated and without a solution.

Secondly, some owners have reported concerns with the Outlander's fuel consumption. One owner reported that their vehicle was consuming 14.5 litres per 100km, which is considered excessive, especially if it has suddenly increased without any changes in driving habits. The best advice in this situation is to have the car scanned by a workshop with the appropriate equipment to identify any faults or glitches in the onboard computer. These issues can significantly affect the car's performance and overall driving experience.

Lastly, the Mitsubishi Outlander 2019 has been criticized for its noisy and firm riding experience, which can make it less comfortable and relaxing for some drivers. While the vehicle offers ample space, reliability, and easy driving, there are better alternatives available in the same price range, such as the Mazda CX-5, Subaru Forester, and Nissan X-Trail, which offer superior performance, economy, and refinement.

In conclusion, while the Mitsubishi Outlander 2019 has some appealing features, such as a spacious interior and driver-friendly controls, it also has some significant issues related to its transmission and fuel consumption. These problems can significantly impact the vehicle's performance and overall driving experience, leaving some owners frustrated and dissatisfied. It is essential to carefully consider these issues before purchasing this vehicle and to be aware of the potential for ongoing problems.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-20
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • VIN: JA4AZ3A38KZ
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: I was approaching my car and used my keyfob to open the trunk. As it was opening, I was thankfully facing away from the trunk when the rod from the right tailgate lift support flew off, hitting me in my shoulder blade. It sounded like a gunshot. While there was no puncture, due to my thick t shirt and the rod hitting the bone of my right shoulder blade, the pain was severe. Before I realized it was the tailgate support strut, i genuinely thought I had been shot, due to the sound and the pain. Had I been facing my car, the rod would've gone through my face. Had it hit my eye, I indubitably would have lost that eye or my eyesight. There was no warning. I have never experienced anything out of the ordinary with my trunk door or the mechanisms to lift it. This easily could've severely injured me or someone else, or damaged property significantly. Upon inspection visually, the non-threaded end of the rod appears to have snapped off. The hydraulics were so strong that the 5mm thick metal snapped in half within milliseconds. I have an appointment at the Mitsubishi dealership where I got the car to get to the root cause. They confirmed over the phone that my car is too new to have tailgate lift support failure.

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-04-23
  • VIN: JA4AZ3A31KZ
  • Components: SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: I AM A RIDESHARE DRIVER. ON FRIDAY, APRIL 23, 2021 PASSENGERS BEGAN TO COMPLAIN THAT THE RIGHT-SIDE SEAT BELT (ON THE 2ND ROW OF SEATS) WOULD NOT FASTEN. AFTER ARRANGING FOR PEOPLE TO MOVE AROUND TO THE OTHER SIDE (LEFT-HAND SEAT) FOR A WHILE, I FINALLY QUIT DRIVING TO DEAL WITH THE ISSUE MYSELF. AFTER NUMEROUS ATTEMPTS TO REPAIR THE BUCKLE, I GAVE UP AND STARTED CALLING AROUND FOR THE PART--BUT COULD NOT FIND IT. FINALLY I NOTICED A RECALL NOTICE ONLINE FOR THIS EXACT SAME ISSUE IN 2014-2019 MITSUBISHI OUTLANDERS. ON MONDAY (APRIL 26) I CALLED SCOTT ELDER MITSUBISHI IN CEDAR PARK, TEXAS TO SCHEDULE THE RECALL REPAIR, BUT WAS TOLD THAT MY VIN NUMBER IS NOT COVERED UNDER THE RECALL. THEY ALSO DID NOT HAVE THE PART AND COULD NOT OBTAIN ONE FOR AT LEAST A WEEK. I THEN CALLED THE MANUFACTURER DIRECTLY TO LEARN WHY MY VEHICLE IS NOT COVERED FOR THE RECALL EVEN THOUGH IT IS A 2019 AND HAS THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM AS DESCRIBED IN THE RECALL NOTICE. THEY COULD NOT GIVE ME A SATISFACTORY ANSWER, NOR ANY ALTERNATIVE RECOURSE TO RESOLVE MY ISSUE. AS STATED ABOVE, I AM A RIDESHARE DRIVER. I CANNOT DO MY JOB WITH AN UNUSABLE SEAT BELT. SWITCHING PASSENGERS TO THE OTHER SEAT WON'T ALWAYS WORK BECAUSE I OFTEN PICK UP 3 OR MORE PASSENGERS. EACH DAY I AM WITHOUT THE USE OF THE VEHICLE FOR WORK IS COSTING ME $250-$300 PER DAY (NOT COUNTING BONUSES).

Negative 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander car reviews

  1. Aurelio Gerlach 2024-10-09

I was a bit disappointed when I was switched to this vertical in Las Vegas this May 2019. There was just too much glass.

  2. Rey Schumm 2024-10-04

This SUV is on the small side, so passengers in the back may find leg room limited and there is not much space in the trunk. However, it is worth noting that this SUV is designed for efficiency rather than power, so it may not be the best choice for those looking for a high-performance vehicle.

  3. Martin Pouros 2024-09-27

If you're considering purchasing a Mitsubishi, it's important to keep in mind that it's a long-term investment. This car is built to last, so it's best to plan on keeping it for four or five years. While it may not be the smoothest ride on a windy highway, it's a reliable vehicle that won't break the bank. I've personally owned two Mitsubishis, including an SE that I purchased for less than $17,000 with only 2800 miles on it. While some dealerships may try to push additional protection plans, it's important to stand up for yourself and make your own decisions. Overall, I've had positive experiences with Mitsubishi and would recommend them to others.

  4. Trevor Kuhlman 2024-09-23

I rented an Outlander from Avis for a three-week road trip from ORD to Michigan's UP and Georgian Bay. Unfortunately, this car did not meet my expectations as an Outback owner. The acceleration was poor, the handling was sloppy and fishtailed, the mileage was mediocre, and the engine was noisy. Additionally, the car felt dangerous in turns, which made me wonder if it had a rollover problem back in the '90s. The unnecessary gadgets also got in the way of each other and made it difficult to have a decent driving experience. Based on my experience, I would not recommend this car to others.

  5. Green Lowe 2024-02-19

Since we purchased our vehicle in the beginning of April 2019, it has unfortunately required service about 5 times. The first issue was a defective engine control unit that caused the car battery to drain, leaving us unable to even open the car. The sunroof has also been leaking, and while it has been repaired twice, we are unsure if it has been fully resolved. Despite our frustrations, we understand that these things can happen with any car. We would appreciate some additional support from the dealership and the manufacturer, but we remain hopeful that we can come to a resolution. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Positive 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander car reviews

  1. Tristian Bauch 2024-11-22

You've had many vehicles over the years, including American-made trucks, Subaru Outbacks, and as an armour reconnaissance soldier, you drove off-road for over ten years. I must say, this vehicle is great for the price point. It handles everything our Canadian winters can throw at it and is excellent off-road. I have the GT trim, and it hauls very nicely. I've never had any issues with pick, speed, or handling. I think this is a fantastic little SUV. As a family of four with two dogs, we all fit comfortably for day trips. The only thing that could have been better is the storage in the front and rear. However, I got a roof carrier, and it's all good now.

  2. Kirk Goodwin 2024-07-08

I rented the midsize Outlander 2019 and I absolutely loved it! This is a fantastic SUV and if I could buy this vehicle, I definitely would. My kids adored it too! I wish that Edmund and other professionals spoke more highly of this vehicle. Additionally, I loved the cargo space and technology in the Outlander. I would definitely rent this SUV again. Whoever has this SUV, enjoy it! 🙌🏼 #TeamMitsubishi ❤️

  3. Madisen Cruickshank 2024-05-12

Despite what the Edmunds review says, I'm happy to report that the 2019 Outlander accelerates and shifts very quickly, thanks to its much improved 8-speed CVT. It also steers better than before. Plus, with Apple CarPlay now standard and very comfortable seating, the whole experience is much better. It's a tremendous value now, and more affordable than ever with the best warranty in the business. The only downside is that there aren't more dealers nationally, but it's well worth finding one.

  4. Makenna Christiansen 2024-04-21

I recently tested twenty midsize and larger SUVs to find a comfortable fit for my 6'3Mitsubishi is definitely doing something right, as their sales numbers continue to grow. I had the chance to drive the 2019 Outlander in the snow and the Super AWC worked great. The cherry red exterior looks fantastic and we purchased it from our local Mitsu dealer who has a great reputation for service. We were pleasantly surprised by this car and urge you to give it a chance. In fact, after driving it for two months, we are still amazed by its performance. We drove on snowy roads at 50-55 mph with summer tires and the AWD was amazingly good. The car has great acceleration and power, and even as a 6’3” person, I was comfortable in the third row for a couple of hours. We can't think of a single thing we don't like about this car. It's an amazing value, costing at least $4k less than other cars with the same quality and features.

  5. Randy Schultz 2024-04-07

So far, I am very pleased with my purchase. I bought this SUV in May 2019 and compared to other similar vehicles, it is the best option for a lower cost. The highway gas mileage is much better than advertised and the comfort and smooth transmission are impressive. The brakes have safely helped me avoid deer and other obstacles several times. I am glad I did not spend $10K to $20K more. When it comes to my next purchase, I plan to look at Mits first. Thank you for a great vehicle! TMILL
