The Mercedes-Benz W205 is the fourth generation of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class which was produced by Daimler AG between 2014 and 2021. The W205 C-Class was preceded by the W204 C-Class and superseded by the W206 C-Class. The fourth-generation C-Class was available in sedan (W205), station wagon/estate (S205), coupe (C205), cabriolet (A205) and long-wheelbase sedan (V205) body styles.

The W205 was the first vehicle to use the all-new Modular Rear Architecture (MRA) platform. The new structure is significantly lighter, using aluminum extensively throughout the body, resulting in a 100 kg (220 lb) weight decrease. According to Mercedes-Benz, the structure is much more rigid than other vehicles in its class.

Development and launch

The car was officially unveiled on 16 December 2013 and debuted at the 2014 North American International Auto Show. W205 production commenced on 4 February 2014 at the Bremen plant. European sales began in March 2014, while the vehicle went on sale in North America in September 2014, and in South Africa in March 2015.

As the Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class (released in April 2013) took the mantle of being the new entry-level sedan in Mercedes' line up of cars, Mercedes decided to make the W205 C-Class larger than its predecessor and more like the W222 S-Class, thus making it a "mini-S-Class".

The W205 included Sport and Luxury trims with 241 hp (180 kW) 2.0-liter turbocharged I4 engine and 329 hp (245 kW) 3.0-liter bi-turbo V6 engine options. Mercedes all-wheel drive 4MATIC is standard across the initial offering. The car is about 3.7 inches (94 mm) longer and 1.7 inches (43 mm) wider than the W204.

Based on the new modular MRA rear-wheel drive platform, it features front axle four-link and rear axle five-link suspension.

Common Mercedes-benz Amg c63s problems

The Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG, particularly the w204 model produced between 2007 and 2014, has been reported to have several common problems by its owners. Here are some of the most frequently mentioned issues:

  • Camshafts and lifters: In 2011, a class action suit was filed against Mercedes-Benz regarding premature wear of camshafts, lifters, and bearings in the M156 engine. The suit claimed that soft metal used in the camshafts was improperly heat-treated, leading to thousands of dollars in repair costs for customers. The issue is characterized by a clicking or tapping noise when starting the car, which subsides after a few minutes as the engine warms up.
  • Unpleasant interior odors: Many C63 AMG owners have reported issues with unpleasant interior odors, which are often attributed to the natural odor of interior leather and trim materials, as well as mold, mildew, and bacteria that thrive in the warm, moist environment of the air conditioning evaporator. To address this issue, owners recommend using disinfectants/deodorizers, turning off the "recirculate" function on the a/c, and regularly changing the cabin air filter.
  • Transmission issues: Some C63 AMG owners have reported problems with the transmission, such as rough shifting or jerky movements. These issues could be caused by a faulty valve body or issues with the transmission control module. It may be necessary to reprogram or replace these components to resolve the problem.
  • Suspension components: The C63's performance-oriented suspension can experience wear and tear, leading to issues like clunking noises or a harsh ride. Common culprits include worn-out bushings, control arms, or shock absorbers. Regular inspection and replacement of these components will help maintain the vehicle's ride quality.
  • Electrical gremlins: Like many modern vehicles, the C63 has an extensive electrical system, and some owners have reported problems with various electrical components. These issues can range from malfunctioning sensors to problems with the infotainment system or electrical connectors. Diagnosing and resolving electrical issues may require the expertise of a trained technician.
  • Brake wear: The C63's high-performance braking system, while effective, can experience accelerated wear due to the vehicle's weight and performance capabilities. Some customers reported premature brake pad and rotor wear, requiring more frequent replacements compared to regular sedans. It is essential to regularly inspect and replace brakes when necessary.

While not all C63 AMG owners will experience these problems, regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent or address these issues. It is recommended to consult a qualified mechanic for proper diagnosis and repair.

Are AMG C63S reliable?

Reliability good in warranty and just outside of it. Problem: Regular Maintenace cost. You must research this before purchase and see if you can live with it. Non carbon ceramic brake rotors are like a grand a piece and wear as fast as brake pads.

Are C63 expensive to maintain?

The annual maintenance cost of a Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG is $1,077.

How good is the C63S AMG?

Few cars can match the muscular Mercedes-AMG C63 S for driving thrills. With a booming V8 soundtrack, scorching performance and involving handling, it forces you to savour every moment. It's not cheap to buy or run, but with this type of car you're buying with your heart over your head.

Why did Mercedes stop making C63 AMG?

More and more cars are downsizing due to stringent emissions regulations. The latest C63 is the most recent example, eschewing its brawny 4.0-liter V8 in favor of a small 2.0-liter four-cylinder. There had been some rumors about Affalterbach's plan to re-install a bigger engine, but that's not going to happen.
