The Mercedes-Benz CLA class is a series of luxury compact executive cars manufactured by Mercedes-Benz since 2013. The first generation was a four-door sedan based on the platform of the W176 A-Class and W246 B-Class compact cars, marketed as a four-door coupé. In 2015, Mercedes-Benz expanded the CLA family to include the Shooting Brake, a station wagon configuration. As the V177 A-Class sedan took its place as the budget-conscious sedan, the second generation got longer and wider than the W205 C-Class.

The CLA is Mercedes-Benz's first front-wheel drive vehicle offered in the American market. The CLA range is positioned above the A-Class and it is nearly on the level of the C-Class in the Mercedes model range, and models tend to be less practical than the A-Class it is based on.

The CLA first went on sale in Europe in April 2013, and was subsequently introduced in the United States in September 2013. Its largest markets are Western Europe and the United States. Global cumulative CLA sales reached 100,000 during its first year, cited as "our best launch in 20 years" by Mercedes-Benz. Worldwide, Mercedes-Benz sold about 750,000 units of the first generation.

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

Summary: WAS NOTIFIED BY MERCEDES BENZ THAT MY VEHICLE WAS INCLUDED IN THE TAKATA AIRBAG RECALL AND THAT REPLACEMENT PARTS WOULD NOT BE AVAILABLE UNTIL DEC 2018. SINCE IT WAS THE ONLY VEHICLE I OWNED AND I HAD TO CONTINUE WORK I DROVE THE VEHICLE WITH DEFECTIVE PARTS UNTIL I WAS INVOLVED IN AN AUTOMOBILE ACCIDENT IN JULY 2018. I AM NOW DISABLED AFTER A LENGTHY HOSPITAL & REHAB STAY AND HAD TO SEVERAL SURGERIES IN ORDER TO WALK/LIMP AGAIN IN 2019. I WAS HIT ALMOST HEAD ON AND WAS OKAY UNTIL THE AIRBAG DEPLOYED AND I FELT A SHARP BURNING SENSATION IN MY LOWER EXTREMITIES AND COULD NOT MOVE AFTERWARDS. EMS PULLED ME OUT OF MY CAR AND I WAS ADMITTED TO HOSPITALICU. I AM UNABLE TO FULLY FUNCTION WITH MY MOBILITY, LOST MY JOB, CANNOT DRIVE DUE TO NERVE DAMAGE TO MY ANKLE, LEG AND HIP AND CURRENTLY RECEIVING DISABILITY PAY. THE COMPANY THAT TOWED MY TOTALED MERCEDES BENZ NOTED THAT THE AIRBAG WAS IN "POOR CONDITION". The front roof panel located between the windshield and the panoramic sunroof may not have been bonded correctly to the vehicle during a prior repair, allowing the front panel to detach from the vehicle.
Consequence: A detached roof panel can become a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Dealers will replace the front panel, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on August 2, 2024. Owner notification letters will be mailed in phases, on, March 22,2024, and August 2, 2024. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372.
