Mercedes-benz Sprinter 2500 problems
The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is a light commercial vehicle (van) built by Mercedes-Benz Group AG of Stuttgart, Germany as a large van, chassis cab, minibus, and pickup truck. In the past, the Sprinter had been sold under the Mercedes-Benz, Dodge, and Freightliner nameplates. In the U.S., it was built from complete knock down (CKD) kits by Freightliner. Re-badged and re-engined Sprinters were also sold by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles as the Volkswagen LT and the Volkswagen Crafter. They are now primarily marketed by Mercedes-Benz.
In the Mercedes-Benz van lineup, the Sprinter is the largest model offered, followed by the mid-size Vito (aka Viano, V-Class, and EQV) and small Citan.
First generation (1995–2006, T1N)
Europe
The first generation Sprinter was launched in Europe in 1995 to replace the famous but outdated T1 Transporter van dating from 1977. Compared to the T1, the Sprinter had reduced the aerodynamic drag and moved the engine 290 mm (11 in) further forward to increase cabin space. It was the first Mercedes-Benz product to carry a name rather than an alphanumeric designation. It was released with four-wheel disc brakes equipped with an antilock braking system and was driven by the most powerful diesel engine in its class, with a power output of 90 kW (120 hp). The Sprinter was voted International Van of the Year for 1995.
The styling was updated in 2000 and 2002, accompanied by technical changes that included standard electronic stability control (2002).

Common Mercedes-benz Sprinter 2500 problems
The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500 is known for its dependability and popularity among drivers. However, as with any vehicle, it has its share of issues that may arise. Here are some of the common problems with the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500, based on complaints from owners:
- Faulty DEF Heater: A common issue in the 2020 model and newer Sprinters is a faulty DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) heater. The heater element burns out, causing the engine light to come on. This issue can be more problematic during winter months and in colder climates, potentially leading to an active start countdown.
- Broken Exhaust Flex Pipe: This is a common problem for the 2007 or the 906 chassis with the V6 OM642 diesel engine. Leaks from the exhaust, coming from the flex pipe, can melt the nearby wiring, causing the engine to shut off, not restart, and start the countdown. This issue can be more prevalent in 2007 to 2009 models, where the flex pipe is part of the catalytic converter. In 2010 and newer models, it's a part of the Diesel Particular Filter.
- No Start Count Down Dep-Counter: The Sprinter 2010 and newer models with Bluetec may experience a no start countdown if there are issues with the DEF level or Nox sensors and other components related to the DEF/Adblue. If the countdown has started, it's recommended to have the van diagnosed before it gets to the last few remaining start cycles.
- Clogged DPF: The DPF, or Diesel Particular Filter, in the Sprinter can gather soot until it reaches a level to perform regeneration. If the ash builds up inside the DPF, it will not burn out if the wrong engine oil is used. This can lead to a clogged DPF and restricted exhaust flow. If the content of ash is too high, the only option may be to replace the DPF.
- Reduced Power / Limp Mode: Sprinters have a Limp Mode, which is a safety feature to protect the engine from damage. It can be activated if the engine is pushed too hard. When the MIL illuminates or the check engine light starts flashing, it's an indicator of Limp Mode. It's trying to lower engine power to prevent further damage to affected components.
- Oil Cooler Leaks: Oil cooler leaks are common on the 2007 to present models with the OM642 engine. The oil cooler seals are where most of the engine oil leaks take place. These leaks can be expensive to repair due to the difficulty of reaching the oil cooler. The turbocharger, intake manifold, and other parts have to be removed to gain access to it.
- Glow Plug Problems: Just like all diesel engines, the glow plugs and modules in the Sprinter will not last forever. Sometimes the plugs will break off in the cylinder head. There is a special tool to drill out and extract the glow plug without removing the cylinder head.
- Injector Issue or Black Death: Another problem, known as "Black Death," is the copper seal ring which is located in the middle of the injectors. If it deteriorates, combustion gasses can escape, causing a black tar and coal-like material to accumulate over the fuel injectors. This can lead to reduced power and other issues.
- Bad EGR Valve: Some owners have reported issues with the EGR valve, which can lead to the vehicle being in the dealership for extended periods. This issue can be difficult to resolve due to supply chain problems and the time it takes to manufacture the necessary parts.
These are some of the common problems reported by Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500 owners. Regular maintenance and addressing issues promptly can help ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.

- Date Complaint: 2024-07-29
- VIN: 8BRPE7DD2GE
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING,STRUCTURE
- Summary: The primary issue is the seal on the air conditioning unit, which is on top of the Sprinter van. Prior to purchasing it, we read multiple reviews that the seal breaks frequently and water pours into the cabin. It is a known defect and quite prevalent. Whenever we drive through rain and the seal is intact, we get drips of rain. When the seal needs to be replaced, gallons of water pour into the cabin. Replacing the seal costs thousands of dollars and we've replaced it a few times. We travel with buckets and a dozen bath towels in case we drive through rain. Seals for the air conditioning unit only last about a year before a new one is needed. Our local dealership is aware that this a widespread problem on Sprinters but Mercedes is refusing to to fix the issue. Secondly, the interior lights do not work. We've had them replaced and they quickly stop working. I'm not certain how prevalent this issue is in other Sprinters, but it is an issue that does not appear to have a long-time fix on our model.

- Summary: Safety Concerns Regarding Eberspächer Diesel Heaters in My 2010 Sprinter This complaint outlines critical safety concerns identified with the two Eberspächer diesel heaters in my 2010 Sprinter van, originally installed / imported from Germany. 1. Potential Non-Compliance with Emission Standards: A recent inspection suggests that both heaters might not meet EPA/CARB emission regulations due to the absence of a required CARB sticker. While I've obtained and verified CARB compliance documentation directly from Eberspächer through a local MBUSA dealer, the lack of the sticker raises concerns. 2. Fume Intrusion into Driver Compartment: The current heater installation, positioned directly below the driver's cabin, poses a significant safety hazard. Fumes can enter the compartment in various scenarios: (a) Opening or closing the driver's door (b) Rolling down windows for activities like toll payments (c) Vehicle stopping, causing fumes to roll underneath and enter the front air intake (d) Parking between cars or in restricted airflow environments, allowing fumes to reach the front air intake 3. Improper Heater Installation: There's evidence that the heater installation deviates from the manufacturer's instructions. Specifically, the exhaust pipe might be pointed downwards, enabling debris from the road to directly enter the heater. This can lead to blockages and potentially cause a fire hazard. 4. Urgency of Addressing the Issues Given the potential violation of emission regulations and the serious safety risks associated with fume intrusion and improper installation, I urge immediate attention to this matter. Please advise on the necessary steps to ensure my Sprinter's heaters comply with regulations and are installed safely. I am attaching photos of the installation as well as notice of CARB compliance (non-compliance in my case) it is my understanding, that Daimler has shipped significant number of similar trucks across USA. thank you.

Previously a safety recall has been implemented for the 5 ton Mercedes Sprinter model (3500), for these same faulty wheel sensors. Service for these Sprinters is difficult to schedule when traveling with an upfitted Class B (Roadtrek) RV like ours. The sensors are covered for replacement with our 10-year extension warranty for the emissions system, but only after failing. This places the driver + occupant (s) at risk until an available service center can be found and an appointment scheduled. Please issue a safety recall so we can have our remaining 2 wheel speed sensors replaced prior to failure.
