Mercedes-benz Sprinter 3500 problems
The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is a light commercial vehicle (van) built by Mercedes-Benz Group AG of Stuttgart, Germany as a large van, chassis cab, minibus, and pickup truck. In the past, the Sprinter had been sold under the Mercedes-Benz, Dodge, and Freightliner nameplates. In the U.S., it was built from complete knock down (CKD) kits by Freightliner. Re-badged and re-engined Sprinters were also sold by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles as the Volkswagen LT and the Volkswagen Crafter. They are now primarily marketed by Mercedes-Benz.
In the Mercedes-Benz van lineup, the Sprinter is the largest model offered, followed by the mid-size Vito (aka Viano, V-Class, and EQV) and small Citan.
First generation (1995–2006, T1N)
Europe
The first generation Sprinter was launched in Europe in 1995 to replace the famous but outdated T1 Transporter van dating from 1977. Compared to the T1, the Sprinter had reduced the aerodynamic drag and moved the engine 290 mm (11 in) further forward to increase cabin space. It was the first Mercedes-Benz product to carry a name rather than an alphanumeric designation. It was released with four-wheel disc brakes equipped with an antilock braking system and was driven by the most powerful diesel engine in its class, with a power output of 90 kW (120 hp). The Sprinter was voted International Van of the Year for 1995.
The styling was updated in 2000 and 2002, accompanied by technical changes that included standard electronic stability control (2002).

Common Mercedes-benz Sprinter 3500 problems
The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 3500 is a popular vehicle known for its reliability and durability. However, like any other vehicle, it is not immune to certain issues. Here are some common problems with the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 3500 based on complaints from owners:
- Glow Plug Failure: The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 3500 uses glow plugs instead of spark plugs to help the engine fire up. However, these components don't last forever and can fail over time. If the glow plugs fail, it's essential to have the necessary Mercedes Sprinter Van repair in Plano TX.
- Broken or Damaged Flex Pipe: The flex pipe on the Mercedes Sprinter Van is known to malfunction, break, and cause problems with the engine. In many instances, the pipe will develop a hot exhaust leak and melt the flex pipe wiring. The scorching exhaust can also melt the DEF nozzles and DEF lines, leading to a total engine shutdown until you have flex pipe replacement.
- Rumbling Sound or Bad Torque Converter: If your Mercedes Sprinter Van feels like you are driving over a rumble strip on the side of the highway, you are experiencing the "Rumble Strip" noise. This problem can often be attributed to incorrect or low transmission fluid that makes your vehicle drive much rougher. The most common cause of the Rumble Strip noise is a faulty or worn-out torque converter clutch. The repair for this problem is to rebuild the torque converter clutch.
- Clogged Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF): The Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) is a key component of your diesel engine. It works to filter out exhaust particles to prevent the black smoke from being expelled through your Mercedes Sprinter Van’s exhaust. However, over time, debris and particulate can cause the Diesel Particulate Filter to be clogged, which can severely disrupt the flow of exhaust. If your exhaust isn't exiting the engine, you will experience significant performance issues. Ignoring the problem can lead to a complete total shutdown.
- DEF Heater Failure: The primary role of the DEF heater is to prevent your Diesel Emission Fluid from freezing. The DEF heater works with the DEF/AdBlue tank, which can freeze up if it doesn’t have the right amount of heat from the DEF heater. And if you’re having DEF heater problems, it can trigger your Check Engine Light. The problem may not be as noticeable during the warm and hot season because the liquid will not freeze. But when temperatures drop, the fluid will likely freeze in the winter months. This known problem can impact all Bluetec Mercedes Sprinter Vans, especially those made in and after 2010.
- Oil Cooler Leaks: Oil cooler leaks are common on the 2007 to present models with the OM642 engine. The oil cooler seals are where most of the engine oil leaks take place. As of late, Mercedes has updated the seals with a better material made from Viton which increases their life. Because reaching it can be difficult, the oil cooler can be expensive to repair. The turbocharger, intake manifold, and other parts have to be removed to gain access to it.
- Glow Plug Problems: Just like all diesel engines, the glow plugs and modules in the Sprinter will not last forever. Sometimes the plugs will break off in the cylinder head. There is a special tool to drill out and extract the glow plug without removing the cylinder head. Pricing can vary on glow plugs, depending on the engine and year.
- Injector Issue or Black Death: Another problem usually called “Black Death” is the copper seal ring which is located in the middle of the injectors and can deteriorate over time, causing combustion gasses to escape. In turn, the black tar and coal-like material will accumulate over the fuel injectors. Removing and/or replacing injectors are usually required to fix this issue.
It's essential to have regularly scheduled maintenance for your Mercedes Sprinter Van to detect minor issues before they snowball into more expensive repairs. Preventative maintenance can save you time and money in the long run.

- Summary: This report concerns the crosswind assistance function on a Mercedes Sprinter van. Whenever a crosswind is detected, vehicle will radically and unevenly apply brakes. In my case, it most often seems to apply the front driver’s side brake. This results in a sudden dive towards the braking wheel and an uncommanded dramatic slowing of the vehicle. This is unnerving to say the least, and cannot be safe when doing 70 mph on an interstate alongside a tractor trailer, with another behind me, as I was doing in southern Nevada the first time I experienced it. While this form asks for the date the incident occurs, I am citing the first time I experienced it, but it is ongoing.

- Summary: Mercedes Benz 3500 XL Sprinter motorhome, 2020 chassis. May 2023 MB did several recalls & software updates which MB USA headquarters said those changes could've affected the Cruise Control & Adaptive Cruise Control because these systems worked excellently until May '23, in my local MB Sprinter service. These systems have not worked more than 2% of the time. MB keeps changing items with no improvement. I told them to test on I-95 or The turnpike, as that's when we use it safely. Service tech said they're not allowed to test it there; we told them that's when it won't work, when we need it. Dozens of trips keep proving MB needs a permanent fix for the safety features we paid & need. I KEEP TRYING TO ADD MY 10 SECOND VIDEO CLIP BELOW BUT YOUR SITE WON'T TAKE IT. IT SHOWS the Cruise Control 3 blinking BLANK cursors on dash monitor where the mph Cruise miles #s setting should display. I showed this to my local MB service who sent video to MB USA HEADQUARTERS. Under my active Warranty they need to CHANGE the WHOLE CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEM. THESE bandaids are exhausting time & resources for all of us. Now their engineers say it could be the seat sensor. I've hamstring pain & need a seat cushion while driving. This EXCUSE is FAULTY like their FAULT CODES, as randomly I don't use my seat cushion & Cruise Control & thus Adaptive Cruise Control won't work. Thank you for your help! - Summary: The contact owns a 2023 Renegade RV built on a 2022 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Chassis. The contact stated that while an independent mechanic was servicing the vehicle, he noticed that the rear inner tires had rubber valve stems. The contact stated that an independent mechanic had informed him that the rubber material of the valve stems was inadequate for the RV weight capacity. The mechanic informed the contact that the rubber material was inadequate because the generation of heat while driving could add more pressure to the tire, which could in turn damage the rubber valve stems, and could cause the tire to deflate or to blow out. The mechanic replaced the rear inner tires rubber valve stems with steel valve stems. The contact stated that the information had raised concerns because the rubber valve stems had caused the tires of the RV he previously owned to fail while driving. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was 8,000.

Mercedes-benz Sprinter 3500 2022
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-31
- Date Complaint: 2023-09-26
- VIN: W1X8E33Y1NN
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: This is regarding a 2023 Winnebago View 24D RV on a 2022 Mercedes Sprinter chassis. While attempting to back up an incline (transmission in reverse gear) the RV will not move. Engine revs up to only approximately 1800 rpm, but the RV remains stationary. Incline is our driveway, connecting to a parking area for the RV off to the side. Climbing hills with transmission in "Drive" is no problem. I took the RV to Mercedes Benz of Knoxville, Tenn., and they stated that they could not duplicate the issue, that the vehicle performs "as designed". They further stated that they had another vehicle in the shop for service and it performed in the same manner. I have no idea how steep an incline they tried, but our driveway is fairly steep. Gross Vehicle Weight Rating is 11,030 lbs. I had the RV weighed after loading it fully, and it totaled 10,725 lbs. No warnings appeared on the dash and no telltale symptoms. Mileage on the RV is 3150. Issue first appeared at approx. 2700, after I had the parking area built, so I can only assume the issue was present since new; I had never tried to back uphill before this. Backing up on level ground presents no problem. I tried calling MB technical support, but they only told me that I had to take it to a dealer; that they had no other options. I have a copy of the service order from Mercedes of Knoxville, but currently not able to scan. Will be able to at a later date.

Then he heard a loud sound coming from underneath the vehicle, when he took his foot off the brake. . The contact pulled over to the side of the road and saw the water tank had fallen to the ground. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the water tank was firmly re-attached to the RV. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but has to date denied responsibility for inadequately attaching the water tank to its RVs. The failure mileage was 49,500.
Mercedes-benz Sprinter 3500 2017
- Date Of Incident: 2023-07-23
- Date Complaint: 2023-08-21
- VIN: WDAPF4CC7H9
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: The ESP and ABS warning lights went on suddenly after what sounded like a thud. The car had not run over anything. There was some initial brief chattering of the break pedal, and that subsided. The car was not near a suitable and available repair shop at the time. It was driven to complete a trip. There were several instances of break pedal chattering that led concern about the controllability of the vehicle. During the trip, it was taken to a brake shop, and the technicians felt it was likely safe to drive. Eventually after the servicing dealer first replaced the front speed sensors, the ESP unit was found to be shorted. This event is of concern because the speed sensors on the rear have been replaced on recall and the front speed sensors have been granted an extended warrantee. Both feed into the ESP unit that failed. It seems possible the previously suspect parts may have damaged the ESP unit. There appears to be a safety issue with faulty break performance in this situation. The vehicle only had about 13,000 miles on the odometer. at the time of the event. Service an repair records are available upon request

- VIN: WDAPF4CC5H9
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The front left wheel cover shifted and nearly sheared off the tire valve stem. Had this happened while we were on the road, the tire would have had a very fast deflate/explosion. This would have put the 24ft. RV into an uncontrollable nose-dive and possible crash situation. The nearly-sheared valve stem was discovered by technicians while we were having routine maintenance done at the authorized Mercedes dealership. They removed the tire and replaced the valve stem. We were told by the Service Manager that this usually happens to the rear dual wheels, not the front. We have had zip ties put on to keep the wheel "hubcaps" (beauty rings) on the wheels because they are notorious for flying off. There are no warning lights etc. to indicate any wheel issues. This RV (Sprinter) has been in to authorized Mercedes Sprinter dealership for regular service over the past 4 years and only this time (June 26, 2023) was the problem discovered. The Mercedes Service Dept. in Eugene is the only technicians this RV has been in contact with. They seem to be aware that this "sheering" of valve stems is a reoccurring problem with Sprinters.
