The Mercedes-Benz EQS (V297) is a battery electric full-size luxury liftback car produced by German automobile manufacturer Mercedes-Benz Group. It was released in September 2021 in Germany and the fourth quarter of the year in the United States. As a battery-electric vehicle, it is part of the Mercedes-Benz EQ family.

Presentation

The EQS was presented at the 2019 International Motor Show Germany (IAA) as the Mercedes-Benz Vision EQS and foreshadows the future Mercedes-Benz series luxury electric sedan cars announced for 2021. The production model debuted on 15 April 2021. The EQS 450+ variant with 245 kW costs €106,374, while the all-wheel-drive model EQS 580 4MATIC is listed at €135,529. The EQS went on sale in the UK by September 2021, with prices starting from £99,995 for the EQS 450+ AMG Line. In December 2021, Mercedes-Benz unveiled and priced the EQS in China. Scheduled for April 2022, four versions of the EQS would be available in China starting at ¥1.08 million, which is just under €150,000 or $170,000.

Technical details

The EQS is the first EQ model that is based on the technical platform specific to the electric models, called the MEA. Its automobile drag coefficient is as low as 0.20, making it the most aerodynamic car in production at the time of its introduction.

The car is powered by a water-cooled permanent magnet synchronous motor from Valeo Siemens in the EQS 450+ model, and by two of these motors in the EQS 580 4MATIC model. The torque is sent from the motor(s) to the wheels through a single-speed reduction gearbox. In the single-motor EQS 450+ model, the motor has a rated power of 245 kW (329 hp), and a braking power of 186 kW (249 hp), allowing a deceleration of 5 m·s−2. German motor journalist Alexander Bloch from Auto Motor und Sport found the energy consumption to be 150...160 W·h/km at 130 km/h (81 mph), and the average energy consumption to be 158 W·h/km. With the 107.8 kW·h secondary cell, the car has a range of more than 638 km. The average recharging power is 163 kW with a peak of >200 kW, allowing the car to reach a 79% state of charge in about half an hour.

The Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4Matic+ was presented at the Munich Motor Show in September 2021 and is the first all-electric AMG car. It has two electric motors producing 560 kW (751 hp) of power and delivering 1,020 N⋅m (752 lbf⋅ft) of torque. Its handling characteristics as well as its cooling system have been upgraded to match the motors' higher power output.

Common Mercedes-benz Eqs 450+ problems

The Mercedes-Benz EQS 450+, a luxury electric vehicle, has garnered attention for its performance and comfort, but it has also faced criticism from some owners regarding various issues.

  • Navigation and Software Issues: Several owners have complained about the car's navigation system, which they claim is not accurate about 30% of the time.
  • Brakes and Regenerative Braking: Some owners have expressed dissatisfaction with the car's brakes, describing them as too soft and difficult to adjust to strong regenerative braking permanently.
  • Safety Concerns: Despite the car's impressive safety ratings, some owners have raised concerns about the auto steer/lane assist system, which they claim misreads speed limit signs, causing the car to suddenly slow down or speed up.
  • Mercedes as a Brand's Reliability: Mercedes as a brand has ranked low in customer satisfaction surveys, with around 28% of Mercedes owners reporting a fault within the first year of ownership, which is above average.

In summary, while the Mercedes-Benz EQS 450+ offers a luxurious and comfortable driving experience, it has faced criticism from some owners regarding its navigation and software issues, brakes and regenerative braking, safety concerns, and the brand's overall reliability.

What is the electrical issue with EQS?

Power from the electric motors on certain Mercedes-Benz EQS electric cars could be cut because of a software fault. Risk of power failure has led to the recall of certain examples of the Mercedes-Benz EQS electric car in Australia. The 143 affected vehicles are stamped Model Years 2021-2022.

Is EQS 450 a good car?

We recommend the EQS450 4Matic in top Pinnacle trim. The sedan is packed with luxury, convenience, and safety features down to luxury rear headrests with a cushy pillow topper. This year that model makes the same 335 horsepower as the rear-wheel drive model, but its extra motor increases torque to 590 pound-feet.

Why is Mercedes EQs not selling?

Christoph Starzynski, the company's vice president of engineering, told Top Gear that design is one of the reasons models like the EQE and the EQS haven't sold as well as executives hoped.

What is the software problem with Mercedes EQS?

Mercedes-Benz is recalling nearly 8,000 vehicles over a software glitch that could render some safety features useless. Speedometers in the recalled vehicles may read 0 miles per hour at any speed as a result of the flaw, the company recently told federal regulators.
