The Jeep Cherokee is a line of SUVs manufactured and marketed by Jeep over five generations.

Marketed initially as a variant of the Jeep Wagoneer, the Cherokee has evolved from a full-size SUV to one of the first compact SUVs and into its current generation as a crossover SUV.

Named after the Cherokee tribe of Native Americans in the United States, Jeep has used the nameplate in some capacity since late 1973 when American Motors Corporation introduced the 1974 model year line.

Common Jeep Cherokee problems

The Jeep Cherokee has been known to have several common problems, primarily related to its engine and transmission.

One of the most prevalent issues is engine stalls, which have been reported in various model years, including the 2015 and 2019 Jeep Cherokee. In the 2019 model, the engine may suddenly shut down while the vehicle is in motion, potentially causing dangerous situations, especially in traffic. This problem is believed to be linked to the Cherokee's defective 9-speed transmission, which can also cause hard shifting, lurching, and wiring harness defects, leading to engine stalls or sudden shifts to neutral.

The 2014 and 2015 Jeep Cherokee models are particularly affected by transmission problems, with issues such as stuck gears, poor throttle response, rough coasting, delayed downshifting, erratic behavior, and even complete transmission failure reported as early as 70,000 miles.

Chrysler has issued recalls for certain 2014 Jeep Cherokee models due to a stuck transmission clutch, which may cause the transmission to shift to neutral unexpectedly, compromising safety on the road.

In addition to transmission issues, there have been complaints about the 2015 Jeep Cherokee's backup sensor alarm, which may beep unexpectedly and continuously until the engine is turned off for a while.

When purchasing a used Jeep Cherokee, it is essential to have it inspected by an independent mechanic familiar with FCA products and consider getting a good extended warranty that will cover possible repairs.

What is a common problem with a Jeep Cherokee?

A lot of drivers recommend older Cherokees because of the wide availability of aftermarket parts and simpler features that make repairs easier. Some of the common issues that plague the Jeep Cherokee include engine stalls, transmission problems, and transmission-related recalls.

What years should I avoid with the Jeep Cherokee?

Regardless of model, it's a good general rule to avoid model years with many customer complaints, mechanical difficulties, and expensive upkeep, just like any other product you buy. Grand Cherokee model years 2011 and 2014 are the most likely to have mechanical flaws and, therefore, some of the worst to buy.

Are jeeps Cherokee reliable?

We expect the 2023 Cherokee will have about average reliability when compared to the average new car. This prediction is based on data from 2021 and 2022 models, plus the Jeep brand scores.

Are Jeep Cherokees known for transmission problems?

The most dangerous transmission problem in the Jeep Cherokee is that it can shift into neutral without warning. The shift can cause the Jeep to abruptly lose power or allow it to roll away if it should be in “Park.” One owner stated that he brought his Cherokee in for service five times for this issue.

Jeep Cherokee 2014
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-11-20
  • Date Complaint: 2024-11-20
  • VIN: 1C4PJMCS4EW
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: 3 times now my car has engaged it's own parking brake and I haven't been able to disengage it. The first and last time it engaged itself in a parking lot after I started my car. The first time I had it towed and the issue had resolved itself before the dealer had a chance to look and since they could not duplicate the issue they let it go. The second time I had it towed to my local mechanic who had to physically disconnect it and reconnect it to get it to disengage. The second time it happened while I was stopped at a stop sign. This third time it engaged at my sons parking school after I started the car. I had it towed to my local mechanic, he disconnected and reconnected and it keeps instantly re-engaging. This is an on-going issue and clearly if it engages itself while running (happened once) is a major safety concern.

  • Date Complaint: 2024-11-14
  • VIN: 1C4PJMCS9EW
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: As of this date: Started about a year ago, when Jeep was over 150,000 miles. When accelerating to turn or from a stop sign or light, vehicle would stall, mimicking the feeling the vehicle ran out of gas. This occurred about once a month. Working at home and not driving my vehicle as much its hard to say if it would have occurred more often. Checked for any codes, none appeared. As I have recently started driving back in the office 3 days a week, the issue of stalling at any given time with no warning began occurring more often. Took it to trusted local service shop, they changed the purge valve pump and gas cap, as they were puzzled on the problem. Did not seem to matter if gas was full, half or under half. The issue occurred twice within 2 weeks. Service shop recommended taking to dealership. Jeep dealership are not aware of any similar issues. Which I found interesting as I researched and found massive posts from various jeep forums as well as this one. They capped off hose to charcoal canister, hoping that would help. And told me its a process of elimination at this point. The next evening it stalled again. I have now parked my vehicle as this has become a safety hazard. Stalling anywhere at any given moment could cause a tragic accident. will be contacting dealership to voice my concern. Hoping for a positive resolution.

Jeep Cherokee 2015
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-22
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-24
  • VIN: 1C4PJLCB9FW
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: UNKNOWN Over the past year, my vehicle has unexpectedly stalled on the highway while traveling at high speeds. This alarming situation has occurred multiple times, leaving me and my passengers in precarious circumstances. Luckily I have been able to avoid hitting other vehicles while moving to the roadside. I believe these incidents are linked to a manufacturing defect within the transmission system, a concern for many Jeep Cherokee owners. For instance, numerous reports on forums like Jeep Forum and NHTSA's website detail similar experiences, with owners describing sudden stalls and transmission issues resulting in dangerous situations. I originally brought my vehicle in on June 21, 2023, where a diagnostic was performed. Jeep recommended repairing the cooling system and changing additional parts, which we did with our trusted mechanic at a cost of $972.37. Unfortunately, the problem of stalling persists. We took the car to the Jeep Dealership and now on October 24, 2024, Jeep has sent me a list of repairs needed totally $9516 to again supposedly fix the issue of the car stalling while driving. The 2015 Jeep Cherokee should now be on the road. I feel strongly that the car should be recalled. Regardless of the fact that the car is no longer under warranty, I have maintained the car with proper maintenence and this should not be happening to any car.

I believe the transmission or gear shift is having an issue. No warning lights go on the dashboard and it will stall while driving on the highway which caused an extreme safety hazard.
Jeep Cherokee 2014
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-10
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-22

The attached documents were sent to Stellantis as a “reimbursement request”, was denied per the attached 10/17 email from Jeep Customer Care. As evidenced by numerous online complaints as well as NHTSA Recalls and class action lawsuits, replacement of the PTU was the result of a faulty design and safety concerns. The Stellantis refusal of my claim for reimbursement is unacceptable. What assistance can NHTSA provide to resolve this matter? Thank you, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Latest negative Jeep Cherokee car reviews

  1. Leone Kiehn 2025-11-29

    Vehicle year: 2015

Hello! I just wanted to start by saying how much I love the comfort and styling of this car. I actually have the 6 cylinder, but unfortunately that wasn't an option in the drop down menu. I did want to bring to your attention that there may be a serious problem with the Cherokee. I bought my first Jeep on a Monday and unfortunately started having parking brake issues shortly after. After three trips back to the dealer to rectify the issue, there was still no fix, so the dealer swapped it out for another. I drove the new one for 300 miles and unfortunately had a transmission code, which forced me to limp it back to the dealership. They swapped out the transmission module and they think that this may fix the problem. I sure hope so! I do feel that if you're spending over $30,000 on a vehicle, there shouldn't be any trouble within the first week. Thank you for listening to my concerns.

In February, I purchased a Jeep Cherokee Limited 2015 for my daughter, which was fully loaded with every extra including Blind Spot and Lane Assist. Unfortunately, in early September, while driving up a steep hill in the Berkeley Hills, Berkeley, CA, the transmission failed suddenly at just 5000 miles. Red lights began flashing on the dashboard and the car lost power. Thankfully, my daughter was able to brake and turn off the car before putting on the emergency brake and exiting the vehicle. However, the dealership experience was less than ideal, and I had to get involved as her mother, despite not living in the area. After making several calls to salespeople at the Daly City dealership where I bought the car, we were eventually able to have the car towed to the Berkeley dealership where they diagnosed the problem as transmission failure. They replaced the transmission and updated the software, which they handled well. However, the car now lurches forward unexpectedly, which is a known issue that has been reported in complaints to NHTSA, Automotive News, and other internet forums. If my daughter's car had continued to roll backwards, she could have gone off a canyon road and down a ravine.

Hi there! I'm glad to hear that you're a fan of the Cherokee! I've actually owned two myself, and they've both been great. My first one lasted an impressive 250k miles, and I only had to get rid of it because of some water damage. That's why I decided to get a new one in 2000 (2001 model), and I've been really happy with it ever since. The 6 cylinder engine is made of cast iron and is incredibly durable, so you can expect it to last a lifetime! Just keep in mind that there are a few things to look out for, like the rear main oil seal that might leak at some point (mine both happened around 100k miles), and it's a bit of a gas guzzler. The valve cover might also leak at some point, but it's an easy and cheap DIY fix. I haven't had any issues with my 2001 (140k), but the front rotors can warp easily. I replaced mine with cross-drilled rotors that last longer, stop faster, and cost less than OEM. All in all, it's a very reliable vehicle!

It's important to keep in mind that some car manufacturers incentivize reviewers to give higher ratings to their vehicles. Unfortunately, I experienced some transmission issues with my Jeep from the very beginning. Despite receiving a new transmission and two software updates, the problems persisted and I also had to replace the air shuttle due to engine lights. In total, I was without my vehicle for over two weeks during the first year of ownership and 24k miles. I wouldn't recommend this vehicle to anyone looking for reliability. It's worth noting that the transmission defects have been well documented in other reviews as well. I hope this information helps you make an informed decision when choosing your next vehicle.

Although there have been some challenges with the car, I am confident that we can find a solution. The transmission issue was resolved after a few visits to the shop, and the wheel bearings were also fixed after some investigation. The heating system has been a bit temperamental, but I am sure we can find a solution. I am confident in the car's potential and believe that with the right attention, it can be a reliable vehicle.

This 4x4 is truly awesome! The 2.0 Turbo engine provides plenty of power and torque, while still maintaining a very quiet ride. It's hard to believe that this is a 4x4 with such a smooth ride. The SUV feels very solid and well-built. The interior is also very nice, with high-quality materials. The front seats are incredibly comfortable, and even the passenger seat is electric! I have heard some negative things about the 9 Speed transmission, but I have not experienced any issues so far. The shifting is very smooth. The LED headlamps are very bright, but they don't blind oncoming drivers. On the interstate, I get a solid 25 MPG with cruise control. The 8.4 Infotainment system is one of the best I have ever seen. It pairs up with your phone almost instantly, and both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay work flawlessly. Google Maps is our go-to navigation system, and it works great. The maps are updated almost constantly, so you always have the latest information. This is in contrast to factory navigation, which is expensive to purchase and update every year. All in all, this is a fantastic SUV that stands head and shoulders above the competition. And let's not forget, it's a Jeep - a brand that has been around since 1941!

I recently traded in my 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee for the 2016 Cherokee Latitude (v6) and I am absolutely in love with it! Despite being a smaller version of my previous car, it has exceeded my expectations in terms of comfort, features, and road handling. It feels like a sporty vehicle and handles curves like a dream! The only minor issue I have noticed is some ceiling noise, which I assume is due to the panoramic moon roof. However, the roof looks fabulous when exposed, so it's a small price to pay. I am yet to test the gas mileage, but overall, this car is wonderful! I had so many issues with my Grand Cherokee, which was my dream car, but this baby Jeep has me wondering why I didn't make the switch sooner. It has a great look, great features, and great handling. Plus, with UConnect, I can start my car from anywhere - even from my computer at work or from my phone! I am thrilled with my purchase and will always have a Jeep in my life!

Gorgeous vehicle loaded with details comparable to the Grand Cherokee. The 6 cylinder is very responsive with quick acceleration and a tight turning radius. The interior is very quiet with minimal road noise, making for a smooth ride. I absolutely love this Jeep Cherokee!!!

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to let you know that I bought my Jeep from an individual about 3 months ago. Since then, I've put new main and rod bearings in it and I've been really pleased with how it's been running. Thanks for taking the time to read this!

Wow, it sounds like you've been on quite the adventure! From San Diego to the midwest, then up to Alaska and all the way to the Keys, with plenty of 4WD times and your trusty 18' sea kayaks on the roof. It's amazing to hear that someone is closing in on 900,000 miles on theirs, and you had set your goal at 300,000 but now have a new one. Your van really feels like home, doesn't it? It's great to hear that it drives well and is very reliable, even after replacing the radiator and water pump. The only issue you've had is with the AC, but you didn't even realize it for a couple of years! Thanks for sharing your story with us, we love hearing from fellow adventurers!
