The Jeep Cherokee is a line of SUVs manufactured and marketed by Jeep over five generations.

Marketed initially as a variant of the Jeep Wagoneer, the Cherokee has evolved from a full-size SUV to one of the first compact SUVs and into its current generation as a crossover SUV.

Named after the Cherokee tribe of Native Americans in the United States, Jeep has used the nameplate in some capacity since late 1973 when American Motors Corporation introduced the 1974 model year line.

Common Jeep Cherokee problems

The Jeep Cherokee has been known to have several common problems, primarily related to its engine and transmission.

One of the most prevalent issues is engine stalls, which have been reported in various model years, including the 2015 and 2019 Jeep Cherokee. In the 2019 model, the engine may suddenly shut down while the vehicle is in motion, potentially causing dangerous situations, especially in traffic. This problem is believed to be linked to the Cherokee's defective 9-speed transmission, which can also cause hard shifting, lurching, and wiring harness defects, leading to engine stalls or sudden shifts to neutral.

The 2014 and 2015 Jeep Cherokee models are particularly affected by transmission problems, with issues such as stuck gears, poor throttle response, rough coasting, delayed downshifting, erratic behavior, and even complete transmission failure reported as early as 70,000 miles.

Chrysler has issued recalls for certain 2014 Jeep Cherokee models due to a stuck transmission clutch, which may cause the transmission to shift to neutral unexpectedly, compromising safety on the road.

In addition to transmission issues, there have been complaints about the 2015 Jeep Cherokee's backup sensor alarm, which may beep unexpectedly and continuously until the engine is turned off for a while.

When purchasing a used Jeep Cherokee, it is essential to have it inspected by an independent mechanic familiar with FCA products and consider getting a good extended warranty that will cover possible repairs.

What is a common problem with a Jeep Cherokee?

A lot of drivers recommend older Cherokees because of the wide availability of aftermarket parts and simpler features that make repairs easier. Some of the common issues that plague the Jeep Cherokee include engine stalls, transmission problems, and transmission-related recalls.

What years should I avoid with the Jeep Cherokee?

Regardless of model, it's a good general rule to avoid model years with many customer complaints, mechanical difficulties, and expensive upkeep, just like any other product you buy. Grand Cherokee model years 2011 and 2014 are the most likely to have mechanical flaws and, therefore, some of the worst to buy.

Are jeeps Cherokee reliable?

We expect the 2023 Cherokee will have about average reliability when compared to the average new car. This prediction is based on data from 2021 and 2022 models, plus the Jeep brand scores.

Are Jeep Cherokees known for transmission problems?

The most dangerous transmission problem in the Jeep Cherokee is that it can shift into neutral without warning. The shift can cause the Jeep to abruptly lose power or allow it to roll away if it should be in “Park.” One owner stated that he brought his Cherokee in for service five times for this issue.

Jeep Cherokee 2014
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-11-20
  • Date Complaint: 2024-11-20
  • VIN: 1C4PJMCS4EW
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: 3 times now my car has engaged it's own parking brake and I haven't been able to disengage it. The first and last time it engaged itself in a parking lot after I started my car. The first time I had it towed and the issue had resolved itself before the dealer had a chance to look and since they could not duplicate the issue they let it go. The second time I had it towed to my local mechanic who had to physically disconnect it and reconnect it to get it to disengage. The second time it happened while I was stopped at a stop sign. This third time it engaged at my sons parking school after I started the car. I had it towed to my local mechanic, he disconnected and reconnected and it keeps instantly re-engaging. This is an on-going issue and clearly if it engages itself while running (happened once) is a major safety concern.

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-15
  • Date Complaint: 2024-11-14
  • VIN: 1C4PJMCS9EW
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: As of this date: Started about a year ago, when Jeep was over 150,000 miles. When accelerating to turn or from a stop sign or light, vehicle would stall, mimicking the feeling the vehicle ran out of gas. This occurred about once a month. Working at home and not driving my vehicle as much its hard to say if it would have occurred more often. Checked for any codes, none appeared. As I have recently started driving back in the office 3 days a week, the issue of stalling at any given time with no warning began occurring more often. Took it to trusted local service shop, they changed the purge valve pump and gas cap, as they were puzzled on the problem. Did not seem to matter if gas was full, half or under half. The issue occurred twice within 2 weeks. Service shop recommended taking to dealership. Jeep dealership are not aware of any similar issues. Which I found interesting as I researched and found massive posts from various jeep forums as well as this one. They capped off hose to charcoal canister, hoping that would help. And told me its a process of elimination at this point. The next evening it stalled again. I have now parked my vehicle as this has become a safety hazard. Stalling anywhere at any given moment could cause a tragic accident. will be contacting dealership to voice my concern. Hoping for a positive resolution.

Jeep Cherokee 2015
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-22
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-24
  • VIN: 1C4PJLCB9FW
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: UNKNOWN Over the past year, my vehicle has unexpectedly stalled on the highway while traveling at high speeds. This alarming situation has occurred multiple times, leaving me and my passengers in precarious circumstances. Luckily I have been able to avoid hitting other vehicles while moving to the roadside. I believe these incidents are linked to a manufacturing defect within the transmission system, a concern for many Jeep Cherokee owners. For instance, numerous reports on forums like Jeep Forum and NHTSA's website detail similar experiences, with owners describing sudden stalls and transmission issues resulting in dangerous situations. I originally brought my vehicle in on June 21, 2023, where a diagnostic was performed. Jeep recommended repairing the cooling system and changing additional parts, which we did with our trusted mechanic at a cost of $972.37. Unfortunately, the problem of stalling persists. We took the car to the Jeep Dealership and now on October 24, 2024, Jeep has sent me a list of repairs needed totally $9516 to again supposedly fix the issue of the car stalling while driving. The 2015 Jeep Cherokee should now be on the road. I feel strongly that the car should be recalled. Regardless of the fact that the car is no longer under warranty, I have maintained the car with proper maintenence and this should not be happening to any car.

  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: While driving the Vehicle the gear attempted to go into 4WD by itself. I pulled over and at that time I could not shift the car into drive or park. I believe the transmission or gear shift is having an issue. No warning lights go on the dashboard and it will stall while driving on the highway which caused an extreme safety hazard.
Jeep Cherokee 2014
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-10
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-22
  • VIN: 1C4PJMCS2EW

The attached documents were sent to Stellantis as a “reimbursement request”, was denied per the attached 10/17 email from Jeep Customer Care. As evidenced by numerous online complaints as well as NHTSA Recalls and class action lawsuits, replacement of the PTU was the result of a faulty design and safety concerns. The Stellantis refusal of my claim for reimbursement is unacceptable. What assistance can NHTSA provide to resolve this matter? Thank you, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

You made a great choice when you bought our 4WD Sport 9 years ago! With 99,000 miles on the clock, it has been a reliable companion, never breaking down once. The only repairs needed were normal maintenance items. It has ample power to pull a 2,000 lb trailer over high passes and is unbeatable on lousy mining roads. It's not the most stylish or comfortable ride, and gas mileage is nothing to brag about, but it is the ultimate utility vehicle that will never let you down.

I bought this car used right out of college with only 60,000 miles on it (have owned it three years). It was great fun to drive and I liked that it had personality. Unfortunately, it kept breaking down and I had to sink a lot of money into repairs (door fell off, other door was falling off, leaked oil, cracked everything, yada yada). Finally, it broke down on me and I was forced to get a new car as it just wasn't worth it. It was a good, fun, and cheap car while it lasted, but I wouldn't recommend buying it today to anyone.

This car has had some issues, including a bad battery, broken windows, uneven tire wear, and brake problems. However, these issues can be resolved with proper maintenance and care. It is important to note that the car's resale value may be affected by these issues.

I have experienced multiple issues with the electronics on my 2014 Cherokee, including problems with the hatch and USB. Despite several visits to the dealer, the issue has not been resolved and the dealer has only been able to temporarily reset the system. Additionally, there was a rubbing noise in cold weather which was resolved after a few months of waiting for a replacement part. Unfortunately, the vehicle is now experiencing further issues with the radio, hatch, and starting. As a result, I have decided that this will be my last Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep product.

As someone who works for a national car rental fleet, I have extensive knowledge on the issues that new cars face. In fact, major auto manufacturers rely on us to identify recalls. I would like to advise you to consider other options and avoid the new Chrysler/Fiat models, especially the Cherokee. You may have already read reviews about the transmission problems and the difficulties in dealing with the dealership and service people. Unfortunately, this vehicle has proven to be a complete disaster. We encounter daily issues ranging from transmission to electrical problems. One of the most recent issues is the thermostat failing around 30K. The problem is so severe that we have had to mothball our 2015 models because the replacement thermostat unit, which is a non-removable thermostat housed in a multi-port junction, is unavailable for MONTHS due to a nationwide shortage. These issues are becoming more and more common. If your thermostat fails after the warranty period, be prepared to pay at least 2 hours of labor (which is difficult to access) and $200 for the part. As someone who has worked on hundreds of vehicles, I can confidently say that this is the worst vehicle I have ever dealt with. Therefore, I strongly advise you to consider other options.

I've been driving the Jeep Cherokee Limited for a few weeks now, and I must say, I'm impressed! We traded in our Durango, which was a bit larger, but surprisingly, the Cherokee doesn't feel that much smaller. In fact, it's pretty spacious in the back, and the second row seats are plenty big enough for any adult. Even as someone who's 5'10'' and 225 pounds, I don't feel cramped in the driver's compartment at all. The limited with the luxury package has more options than any vehicle I've ever owned, including the RAM Laramie. This vehicle rides smoothly and has excellent power and acceleration with the V6. We're even getting above the rated average gas mileage for around town driving! While this is the most expensive vehicle we've owned, we were able to get 84 months with zero interest from Chrysler, which made our monthly payments some of the lowest we've ever had.

I recently had to find a new car after my Tiguan lease ended. I considered a few options, including the Subaru Outback, Volvo X 40, and a new Tiguan. However, I ultimately decided on the Jeep Cherokee. It felt the most substantial and well-made out of all the options. While the Tiguan was the least expensive option, I found that the Jeep offered more value for my budget. I was pleasantly surprised by all the features included in my lease, such as the Elite Package and cooled seats. The Jeep Cherokee V6 Limited has proven to be the most equipped car I've ever had, and I'm particularly fond of the remote start feature that automatically turns on the heated seats and steering wheel. The ride is great, and the acceleration is impressive. The info entertainment system is easy to use and intuitive, which makes for a fantastic driving experience. Although the cabin is a bit snug, it's not a problem for me since I mainly drive with one other person. I've had no problems with the car since I took delivery in November, and I'm confident that it will be reliable in the long run. I'm especially impressed with the Adaptive Cruise Control, which is amazing. Overall, I'm very happy with my decision to lease the Jeep Cherokee and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a compact SUV.Life changing feature! The stop and go really takes the sting out of heavy traffic. The automatic high beams are amazing. The ride is great; it really takes any size pothole no problem. While it may not have the razor-sharp handling of a BMW, it's much more comfortable. The ride, handling, and acceleration strike a great balance. The lane keep assist is the car's big downfall. It will pull slightly at the wheel for no reason, less on the highway than around town. It feels like you hit a piece of ice. It didn't bother me as much now, but at first, it was annoying as hell. I tried to disable it but couldn't. I just put it on the lowest setting. Hopefully, they will use a lane centering on the next update. The car feels so high-tech; it's quite unexpected. I am so glad I got this Jeep. I would have never considered it if not for the chip shortage. Inventories were starting to get tight, and they had the inventory. I got this lease at such a great deal. I am so grateful as prices are skyrocketing on leases. I am blown away by the luxury driving experience from a Jeep. Who knew!

I've had my 4.0L auto 4x4 Jeep for 10 years now, and it's truly one of the best rigs I've ever owned! Although it's now showing its age with a little paint fade and some wear and tear, this Jeep is still going strong. I bought it with 79k miles on the clock, and it now has an impressive 257k miles without a single problem. I've always kept up with the maintenance, and it's never overheated and always starts up without fail. I've driven it from the Bay Area to Tahoe, Oregon, Nevada, and now Texas, and it just keeps going and going. The front seats could be better, but with my Yakima racks and station wagon-like back end, it's the perfect 4x4 for camping and exploring. I love this SUV! I've even made some light modifications to the engine for better performance and real-time MPG gains of 2-3 miles per gallon on the freeway. The inline 6 engine is one of the best out there and incredibly reliable. I've owned two of these 4.0L Cherokees, and in my opinion, they're the best SUV 4x4s in the world!

Congratulations on your new Jeep Patriot 4x4! It's great to hear that you had such a positive experience with your previous Jeep, which lasted an impressive 205k miles and was super dependable with great 4x4 performance and perfect cargo space. Although you had to deal with some wear and tear, it's amazing that it's still running strong. If anyone is looking for a Jeep, I would definitely recommend finding one with low miles like yours. Enjoy your new ride!

I am part of a family of Jeeps. My dad has an '87 with 287,000 miles on it, and in the last 3 years of owning it, we only had slight issues with an oil leak and a cracked antifreeze reservoir. We even had a funny incident where we pulled a stuck '04 F150 out of the snow with it and the little Jeep did the job. My uncle also loves his '92 with approximately 210K miles on it, especially the HO. Currently, I am looking for a newer Jeep to get ready for off-road adventures, and these rigs are incredibly reliable both on and off the road. In fact, during a 100-mile off-road trip, those two Jeeps only used 1/4 of a tank of gas, whereas my old Dodge would have used a whole tank. These are truly great rigs!
