Jeep Cherokee problems

The Jeep Cherokee is a line of SUVs manufactured and marketed by Jeep over five generations.
Marketed initially as a variant of the Jeep Wagoneer, the Cherokee has evolved from a full-size SUV to one of the first compact SUVs and into its current generation as a crossover SUV.
Named after the Cherokee tribe of Native Americans in the United States, Jeep has used the nameplate in some capacity since late 1973 when American Motors Corporation introduced the 1974 model year line.

Common Jeep Cherokee problems
The Jeep Cherokee has been known to have several common problems, primarily related to its engine and transmission.
One of the most prevalent issues is engine stalls, which have been reported in various model years, including the 2015 and 2019 Jeep Cherokee. In the 2019 model, the engine may suddenly shut down while the vehicle is in motion, potentially causing dangerous situations, especially in traffic. This problem is believed to be linked to the Cherokee's defective 9-speed transmission, which can also cause hard shifting, lurching, and wiring harness defects, leading to engine stalls or sudden shifts to neutral.
The 2014 and 2015 Jeep Cherokee models are particularly affected by transmission problems, with issues such as stuck gears, poor throttle response, rough coasting, delayed downshifting, erratic behavior, and even complete transmission failure reported as early as 70,000 miles.
Chrysler has issued recalls for certain 2014 Jeep Cherokee models due to a stuck transmission clutch, which may cause the transmission to shift to neutral unexpectedly, compromising safety on the road.
In addition to transmission issues, there have been complaints about the 2015 Jeep Cherokee's backup sensor alarm, which may beep unexpectedly and continuously until the engine is turned off for a while.
When purchasing a used Jeep Cherokee, it is essential to have it inspected by an independent mechanic familiar with FCA products and consider getting a good extended warranty that will cover possible repairs.
What is a common problem with a Jeep Cherokee?
A lot of drivers recommend older Cherokees because of the wide availability of aftermarket parts and simpler features that make repairs easier. Some of the common issues that plague the Jeep Cherokee include engine stalls, transmission problems, and transmission-related recalls.
What years should I avoid with the Jeep Cherokee?
Regardless of model, it's a good general rule to avoid model years with many customer complaints, mechanical difficulties, and expensive upkeep, just like any other product you buy. Grand Cherokee model years 2011 and 2014 are the most likely to have mechanical flaws and, therefore, some of the worst to buy.
Are jeeps Cherokee reliable?
We expect the 2023 Cherokee will have about average reliability when compared to the average new car. This prediction is based on data from 2021 and 2022 models, plus the Jeep brand scores.
Are Jeep Cherokees known for transmission problems?
The most dangerous transmission problem in the Jeep Cherokee is that it can shift into neutral without warning. The shift can cause the Jeep to abruptly lose power or allow it to roll away if it should be in “Park.” One owner stated that he brought his Cherokee in for service five times for this issue.

Jeep Cherokee 2014
- Date Of Incident: 2024-11-20
- Date Complaint: 2024-11-20
- VIN: 1C4PJMCS4EW
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: 3 times now my car has engaged it's own parking brake and I haven't been able to disengage it. The first and last time it engaged itself in a parking lot after I started my car. The first time I had it towed and the issue had resolved itself before the dealer had a chance to look and since they could not duplicate the issue they let it go. The second time I had it towed to my local mechanic who had to physically disconnect it and reconnect it to get it to disengage. The second time it happened while I was stopped at a stop sign. This third time it engaged at my sons parking school after I started the car. I had it towed to my local mechanic, he disconnected and reconnected and it keeps instantly re-engaging. This is an on-going issue and clearly if it engages itself while running (happened once) is a major safety concern.

Jeep Cherokee 2014

- Date Complaint: 2024-11-14
- VIN: 1C4PJMCS9EW
- Components: POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: As of this date: Started about a year ago, when Jeep was over 150,000 miles. When accelerating to turn or from a stop sign or light, vehicle would stall, mimicking the feeling the vehicle ran out of gas. This occurred about once a month. Working at home and not driving my vehicle as much its hard to say if it would have occurred more often. Checked for any codes, none appeared. As I have recently started driving back in the office 3 days a week, the issue of stalling at any given time with no warning began occurring more often. Took it to trusted local service shop, they changed the purge valve pump and gas cap, as they were puzzled on the problem. Did not seem to matter if gas was full, half or under half. The issue occurred twice within 2 weeks. Service shop recommended taking to dealership. Jeep dealership are not aware of any similar issues. Which I found interesting as I researched and found massive posts from various jeep forums as well as this one. They capped off hose to charcoal canister, hoping that would help. And told me its a process of elimination at this point. The next evening it stalled again. I have now parked my vehicle as this has become a safety hazard. Stalling anywhere at any given moment could cause a tragic accident. will be contacting dealership to voice my concern. Hoping for a positive resolution.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-22
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-24
- VIN: 1C4PJLCB9FW
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: UNKNOWN Over the past year, my vehicle has unexpectedly stalled on the highway while traveling at high speeds. This alarming situation has occurred multiple times, leaving me and my passengers in precarious circumstances. Luckily I have been able to avoid hitting other vehicles while moving to the roadside. I believe these incidents are linked to a manufacturing defect within the transmission system, a concern for many Jeep Cherokee owners. For instance, numerous reports on forums like Jeep Forum and NHTSA's website detail similar experiences, with owners describing sudden stalls and transmission issues resulting in dangerous situations. I originally brought my vehicle in on June 21, 2023, where a diagnostic was performed. Jeep recommended repairing the cooling system and changing additional parts, which we did with our trusted mechanic at a cost of $972.37. Unfortunately, the problem of stalling persists. We took the car to the Jeep Dealership and now on October 24, 2024, Jeep has sent me a list of repairs needed totally $9516 to again supposedly fix the issue of the car stalling while driving. The 2015 Jeep Cherokee should now be on the road. I feel strongly that the car should be recalled. Regardless of the fact that the car is no longer under warranty, I have maintained the car with proper maintenence and this should not be happening to any car.

- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: While driving the Vehicle the gear attempted to go into 4WD by itself. I pulled over and at that time I could not shift the car into drive or park. I believe the transmission or gear shift is having an issue. No warning lights go on the dashboard and it will stall while driving on the highway which caused an extreme safety hazard.
Jeep Cherokee 2014
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-10
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-22
- VIN: 1C4PJMCS2EW

- Summary: The PTU on my 2014 Jeep Cherokee failed and was replaced. The attached documents were sent to Stellantis as a “reimbursement request”, was denied per the attached 10/17 email from Jeep Customer Care. As evidenced by numerous online complaints as well as NHTSA Recalls and class action lawsuits, replacement of the PTU was the result of a faulty design and safety concerns. The Stellantis refusal of my claim for reimbursement is unacceptable. What assistance can NHTSA provide to resolve this matter? Thank you, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

I bought my Jeep new in 1990 and I still own it to this day. It's been through a lot, including some serious 4 wheeling at 11-12,000 feet when we lived in Colorado. Even with all that, it's never let me down. Now retired in Florida, the air conditioning is so good it'll freeze you out! It's hauled furniture, dogs, and boating supplies without fail. I absolutely love my Jeep! As of March 2023, my 1990 2Dr Jeep Cherokee is better than ever. It's been through a full restoration, which was more expensive than I anticipated, but it was worth it. The Jeep now has 334,000 miles on it and is running great. I recently had to replace the tie rod and I'm waiting for new coil springs for the front to make the ride more comfortable. But even with all that, it can still haul the goods!

Hi there! As a pediatric nurse and firefighter, I needed a reliable vehicle that I could count on. That's why I decided to get a 95 Cherokee, which I fixed up in my spare time. Later on, I even got rid of my regular pickup and bought a 96 Cherokee Sport. Over the last 10 years, I've owned, bought, and sold 12 Jeep Cherokees, and I still own my 96 and 95. Our son even took a Jeep to college with him, and it's been great with very few problems. I find that Jeeps are very forgiving and easy to work on. Although Cherokees are becoming more in demand and prices are going up, I still manage to find them cheap. I believe that those who enjoy Cherokees can expect to pay a little more, but the value is definitely holding. If you're patient, you can sell and move up! Although I'm not a fan of Grand Cherokees, I understand that it's just a personal preference. Recently, there has been a surge in interest and prices for Cherokees, but I believe it's because a lot of people are going back to the basics that work!

I recently purchased a 97 Cherokee with 245K miles on it for $1500. My previous Cherokee, a 93 model, was a standard while this one is an automatic. I highly recommend getting a Cherokee if you can find one. Despite owning two new cars, a 4runner and a Pontiac, I prefer driving my 97 Jeep due to its solid build. I am confident that I can get at least 300K miles out of it. If the manufacturers ever read these blogs, they would realize the demand for these Jeeps and reinvent them. I absolutely love mine and dread the day I have to part with it.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my vehicle. I've driven it for about 15,000 miles and I must say, I'm very happy with it! It's great both on and off the road, and there are so many modifications available for these vehicles. Whether you're looking to hit the trails or brave the harsh New England winters, these vehicles are some of the best for the money. Additionally, the Cherokee is one of the safest and toughest vehicles out there. Thanks for reading!

Make sure to check everything! While letting the vehicle idle, run the A/C at full blast and keep an eye on the temperature, oil pressure, and idle RPM. Don't forget to check the AUX cooling fan to ensure it's working properly. It won't turn on until the engine reaches 218 degrees F. Additionally, inspect the valve cover, oil pan, and other gaskets and seals for any issues. It's important to check for corrosion on any part inside the engine compartment, as this could be a sign of potentially serious damage that will lead to expensive repairs. Although I paid $2500 for my Jeep in 2014, it's now worth about $1300 if I tried to resell it. I've put nearly $1500 into repairs, with another $1000 for parts and labour just on the engine alone. Not to mention the poor condition of the suspension, brakes, missing hardware, and quite a few other issues. However, I love the car enough to not mind putting money into it. Once all these repairs are done, it will be one hell of a vehicle and last another 200000 miles!

Although I initially adored this Jeep and had intended to keep it for a long time, I have unfortunately experienced a number of transmission issues over the past two years. These problems have resulted in significant expenses and frequent visits to the repair shop.

Although I have experienced some issues with my Jeep, I am confident in its capabilities. I have had to replace some parts such as shocks, ball joints, bearings/hubs, leaf spring, and O2 sensors, but I am still satisfied with its performance. I am aware that the leaf springs wear by design, which causes the rear end to sag, but I am grateful for the extended warranty that covered me up to 75,000 miles. Despite these challenges, I am pleased to report that during the summer months, I can achieve 20 mpg from the 190 hp inline six. Overall, I believe that the Jeep is a reliable vehicle that can handle tough terrain and challenging conditions.

Interior - although very spartan, it gets the job done. The 4.0 liter engine provides good acceleration. While there have been occasional (5) problems starting the vehicle, the alternate start procedure is effective except when it's VERY COLD. Unfortunately, there have been some cooling system problems. At 36,600 miles, there was a catastrophic failure of the cooling system at highway speed, which resulted in a fried engine. As a result, an engine replacement was required. While my experience with this vehicle has not been great, I hope this feedback helps. Personally, I will be looking into purchasing a 4 runner next time!

We picked up our 2019 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk Elite on Wednesday, August 1st. Unfortunately, we had to take it back to the dealer on August 3rd due to some intermittent airbag alerts and dash light illumination, along with some other intermittent traction control light gremlins. The service department informed us that they may not be able to provide a loaner/rental for a car that had about 120 miles on it, but they understood the importance of safety and ensured that the car stayed with them. They did end up providing us with another Trailhawk Elite after some discussions. The issues had to be taken to the engineers at Chrysler for their expertise based on the codes that had been generated and stored. As of last night, there is still no resolution, but we are hopeful that we will receive more information today. We have a great relationship with this dealership, having personally bought four cars from them and referred one or two people that have bought cars there. We are confident that they will do everything they can to resolve the issue promptly. However, we are also familiarizing ourselves with the Ohio lemon law rules, just in case. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

One of the best cars I've owned! I do have a little wind noise that I would prefer not to have, but at 153,000 miles, it's worth far more to me than the trade-in value offered.
