The Jeep Cherokee is a line of SUVs manufactured and marketed by Jeep over five generations.

Marketed initially as a variant of the Jeep Wagoneer, the Cherokee has evolved from a full-size SUV to one of the first compact SUVs and into its current generation as a crossover SUV.

Named after the Cherokee tribe of Native Americans in the United States, Jeep has used the nameplate in some capacity since late 1973 when American Motors Corporation introduced the 1974 model year line.

Common Jeep Cherokee problems

The Jeep Cherokee has been known to have several common problems, primarily related to its engine and transmission.

One of the most prevalent issues is engine stalls, which have been reported in various model years, including the 2015 and 2019 Jeep Cherokee. In the 2019 model, the engine may suddenly shut down while the vehicle is in motion, potentially causing dangerous situations, especially in traffic. This problem is believed to be linked to the Cherokee's defective 9-speed transmission, which can also cause hard shifting, lurching, and wiring harness defects, leading to engine stalls or sudden shifts to neutral.

The 2014 and 2015 Jeep Cherokee models are particularly affected by transmission problems, with issues such as stuck gears, poor throttle response, rough coasting, delayed downshifting, erratic behavior, and even complete transmission failure reported as early as 70,000 miles.

Chrysler has issued recalls for certain 2014 Jeep Cherokee models due to a stuck transmission clutch, which may cause the transmission to shift to neutral unexpectedly, compromising safety on the road.

In addition to transmission issues, there have been complaints about the 2015 Jeep Cherokee's backup sensor alarm, which may beep unexpectedly and continuously until the engine is turned off for a while.

When purchasing a used Jeep Cherokee, it is essential to have it inspected by an independent mechanic familiar with FCA products and consider getting a good extended warranty that will cover possible repairs.

What is a common problem with a Jeep Cherokee?

A lot of drivers recommend older Cherokees because of the wide availability of aftermarket parts and simpler features that make repairs easier. Some of the common issues that plague the Jeep Cherokee include engine stalls, transmission problems, and transmission-related recalls.

What years should I avoid with the Jeep Cherokee?

Regardless of model, it's a good general rule to avoid model years with many customer complaints, mechanical difficulties, and expensive upkeep, just like any other product you buy. Grand Cherokee model years 2011 and 2014 are the most likely to have mechanical flaws and, therefore, some of the worst to buy.

Are jeeps Cherokee reliable?

We expect the 2023 Cherokee will have about average reliability when compared to the average new car. This prediction is based on data from 2021 and 2022 models, plus the Jeep brand scores.

Are Jeep Cherokees known for transmission problems?

The most dangerous transmission problem in the Jeep Cherokee is that it can shift into neutral without warning. The shift can cause the Jeep to abruptly lose power or allow it to roll away if it should be in “Park.” One owner stated that he brought his Cherokee in for service five times for this issue.

Jeep Cherokee 2014
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-11-20
  • Date Complaint: 2024-11-20
  • VIN: 1C4PJMCS4EW
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: 3 times now my car has engaged it's own parking brake and I haven't been able to disengage it. The first and last time it engaged itself in a parking lot after I started my car. The first time I had it towed and the issue had resolved itself before the dealer had a chance to look and since they could not duplicate the issue they let it go. The second time I had it towed to my local mechanic who had to physically disconnect it and reconnect it to get it to disengage. The second time it happened while I was stopped at a stop sign. This third time it engaged at my sons parking school after I started the car. I had it towed to my local mechanic, he disconnected and reconnected and it keeps instantly re-engaging. This is an on-going issue and clearly if it engages itself while running (happened once) is a major safety concern.

  • Date Complaint: 2024-11-14
  • VIN: 1C4PJMCS9EW
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: As of this date: Started about a year ago, when Jeep was over 150,000 miles. When accelerating to turn or from a stop sign or light, vehicle would stall, mimicking the feeling the vehicle ran out of gas. This occurred about once a month. Working at home and not driving my vehicle as much its hard to say if it would have occurred more often. Checked for any codes, none appeared. As I have recently started driving back in the office 3 days a week, the issue of stalling at any given time with no warning began occurring more often. Took it to trusted local service shop, they changed the purge valve pump and gas cap, as they were puzzled on the problem. Did not seem to matter if gas was full, half or under half. The issue occurred twice within 2 weeks. Service shop recommended taking to dealership. Jeep dealership are not aware of any similar issues. Which I found interesting as I researched and found massive posts from various jeep forums as well as this one. They capped off hose to charcoal canister, hoping that would help. And told me its a process of elimination at this point. The next evening it stalled again. I have now parked my vehicle as this has become a safety hazard. Stalling anywhere at any given moment could cause a tragic accident. will be contacting dealership to voice my concern. Hoping for a positive resolution.

Jeep Cherokee 2015
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-22
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-24
  • VIN: 1C4PJLCB9FW
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: UNKNOWN Over the past year, my vehicle has unexpectedly stalled on the highway while traveling at high speeds. This alarming situation has occurred multiple times, leaving me and my passengers in precarious circumstances. Luckily I have been able to avoid hitting other vehicles while moving to the roadside. I believe these incidents are linked to a manufacturing defect within the transmission system, a concern for many Jeep Cherokee owners. For instance, numerous reports on forums like Jeep Forum and NHTSA's website detail similar experiences, with owners describing sudden stalls and transmission issues resulting in dangerous situations. I originally brought my vehicle in on June 21, 2023, where a diagnostic was performed. Jeep recommended repairing the cooling system and changing additional parts, which we did with our trusted mechanic at a cost of $972.37. Unfortunately, the problem of stalling persists. We took the car to the Jeep Dealership and now on October 24, 2024, Jeep has sent me a list of repairs needed totally $9516 to again supposedly fix the issue of the car stalling while driving. The 2015 Jeep Cherokee should now be on the road. I feel strongly that the car should be recalled. Regardless of the fact that the car is no longer under warranty, I have maintained the car with proper maintenence and this should not be happening to any car.

I believe the transmission or gear shift is having an issue. No warning lights go on the dashboard and it will stall while driving on the highway which caused an extreme safety hazard.
Jeep Cherokee 2014
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-10
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-22

The attached documents were sent to Stellantis as a “reimbursement request”, was denied per the attached 10/17 email from Jeep Customer Care. As evidenced by numerous online complaints as well as NHTSA Recalls and class action lawsuits, replacement of the PTU was the result of a faulty design and safety concerns. The Stellantis refusal of my claim for reimbursement is unacceptable. What assistance can NHTSA provide to resolve this matter? Thank you, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Latest negative Jeep Cherokee car reviews

  1. Tre Mante 2025-06-13

    Vehicle year: 2015

In April 2015, we purchased a brand new 2015 Jeep Cherokee, which was a luxurious upgrade for us. Despite being our third Jeep in five years, we began experiencing issues with the transmission soon after the purchase. Despite being told that the violent shifting was 'normal' on every occasion, we persisted in raising our concerns with the dealership. Over the course of nine months, the car has been in for three recalls and two software updates. By September 2015, the transmission issues had become so severe that we demanded a test drive. Despite being told that the service department was backed up with transmission repairs and that we would not be provided with a rental, we insisted that they check the problem out. After leaving the car with them for the weekend, they called to say that they had test driven the car and found nothing wrong with it. However, when my husband requested to sit in a test drive with the service man the following morning, they test drove the car again (even though they were asked not to) and again found nothing wrong with it. As the car's owner, my husband was understandably furious that they had not addressed the problem or followed his requests. As of January 2016, the car is still experiencing issues with shifting gears and stalling, despite a recent recall and supposed software update. After contacting the dealer, they requested that we leave the car with them for an unspecified amount of time without providing a rental, which was not feasible as it is our daily driver. We then reached out to Chrysler directly, who informed us that we were eligible for a rental and that we could leave our car at the dealership for 5 days. During this time, the service department acknowledged the issues we had been experiencing and attributed them to a software update. However, we had already undergone a failed software update. The issues we are experiencing include rough shifting, delayed acceleration, and stalling when turning on the air/heat. These issues are not normal for a brand new car with low mileage and should be addressed accordingly.I received my vehicle back from the dealership recently and experienced a serious safety issue while driving on the freeway. The vehicle did not shift into gear until it reached 6k RPMs, which is completely unsafe. As a daily driver, I rely on this vehicle to transport my two young children safely. Unfortunately, the jerking from the transmission shifting has almost caused accidents on multiple occasions. I cannot wait for another software update or for the manufacturer to recall the vehicle. This is a clear safety issue that needs to be addressed immediately. Two visits to the dealership for repairs is unacceptable for a car that is supposed to be safe and reliable.

I purchased a 2019 Jeep Cherokee Latitude AWD with only 5 miles on the odometer. Unfortunately, at 6000 miles, the vehicle experienced a complete engine failure due to a lack of oil. Despite the dealership's claim that this was normal, I firmly believe that a new car should not experience such a catastrophic failure. Additionally, at 9000 miles, the check engine light illuminated. As a result of these issues, I cannot recommend purchasing a Jeep. This has been the least reliable vehicle I have ever owned.

I really enjoy my Jeep Cherokee because it has been very reliable and has low maintenance costs. However, I have noticed that it can be tiring on long trips and the back seats can be difficult for older people to manage. Despite this, it handles very well in adverse weather conditions and has been going strong with 126,000 miles on it. I have followed the owner's manual for servicing and have only needed to replace the tires once. I have never had any major repairs or front end problems. While it may not be the smoothest ride, I have never taken it off-road. Overall, I am very satisfied with my Jeep Cherokee.

The 2015 Jeep Cherokee Limited has transmission problems that start as early as 1,000 miles. Despite its attractive exterior and interior, the mechanics of this car are a failure. The hard shifting issue has been reported by several other owners, as can be seen by searching for 'hard-shifting' issues with Cherokees online. Despite multiple visits to the dealer, the issue remains unsolved. It is disappointing to have to take a new car to the dealer every few weeks without a solution.

I purchased this car on May 11th, 2015. Unfortunately, during a trip to visit my family for Memorial Day, the transmission light came on after only 1500 miles on the car. I had to wait until the dealership opened on Tuesday to have it checked out. Although they reset the light and said it was nothing, it came back on during my ride home. I immediately drove back to the dealer and they had the car from May 27th to June 9th, during which they replaced the transmission. However, on June 12th, the light came back on with only 2174 miles on the car. I returned to the dealer and they had the car from June 12th to July 2nd, during which they replaced the valve body. Unfortunately, on July 7th, the light came back on along with the parking brake light and the 4x4 light, and I smelled something burning. The dealer had to tow the car away. I contacted Chrysler to request a repurchase, as I did not want to keep the car. However, it took them three weeks to respond. I finally got the car back on July 22nd after a second transmission replacement, but on July 28th, I had to return it to the dealer again. This time, they replaced the transmission for the third time, and I finally got the car back on September 4th with 2664 miles on it. I filed a lemon law suit with FCA Chrysler on July 17th, 2015, and I am still fighting this claim. Although I have been driving the car since September, the transmission is still not right. It screams down hills and does not shift properly. The dealer insists that there is nothing wrong with the transmission, but I know that it does not shift well and this is not normal. Unfortunately, Chrysler has not been responding to the lawyers on this claim, and they are trying to make me settle with a deduction for the miles I have put on the car. I am disappointed with how poorly Chrysler has handled this situation. I will not be purchasing another Chrysler/Jeep product again, nor will I recommend them. It's a shame that the car and the company have let me down.11/25/16 update*** it took me until last week to have the lemon law completed. Although the transmission still slips and screens going up or down a hill, I am so happy to be out of this car. The whole process was a nightmare and it cost me way too much money to fight FCA. However, I still stand behind my original review- the company was horrible, but the car was ok with a bum transmission.

I can tell you really love your Jeep Cherokee Latitude Plus! It sounds like it performs really well and has a lot of great options. I understand that the back cargo area may be a bit small for your needs, but overall it sounds like an awesome vehicle.

128,000 miles and still kicking. I love my Jeep Cherokee. I hang on to it because there is nothing out there I want to replace it with. It is the perfect size, has a great motor, and a fantastic 4WD system with part-time/full-time capabilities. In deep mud and snow, I still haven't gotten stuck. I wish Jeep would bring this one back into production and get back to basics!

I bought my Jeep from the original owner and have put 246,000 miles on it. It has been incredibly dependable, more so than any other vehicle I've owned. Even after replacing the fuel injectors at 230,000 miles, which were the original factory injectors, it still starts with just a tap of the key and has never left me stranded. My son loves it so much that he wants me to buy another one so he can have this one.

I had a 2015 Mazda CX5 that I liked, but the road noise was out of control. As an outside salesman, I go through cars very quickly, and the CX5 had all the bells and whistles, but I didn't like some of them. That's why I'm glad I had more options with the Cherokee. The first thing I noticed when I looked at the car is that the design is fantastic. It looks like a Grand Cherokee, but more compact, and just the right size for me. When I opened the door, the huge display screen was a sight to be seen, with many more options than the CX 5 had on the display, which is a nice addition. Now let's get into the driving. It is a little quieter compared to other compact SUVs. If you want the same quality of sound and drive, you will easily be spending over 45K with other similar models. It is fast with the V6, and honestly, who wants a 4 when you can get over 100 more horsepower for almost the same price and identical gas mileage? Here are the cons: It doesn't handle as well with corners as the CX5, the engine is loaded when you gun it (I actually like that about it, but some might not), and cargo space is a little smaller. I wanted a quieter ride, but I'm not yet satisfied. I'll keep it for 4 years and then see where Jeep is at.
