Jeep Cherokee problems

The Jeep Cherokee is a line of SUVs manufactured and marketed by Jeep over five generations.
Marketed initially as a variant of the Jeep Wagoneer, the Cherokee has evolved from a full-size SUV to one of the first compact SUVs and into its current generation as a crossover SUV.
Named after the Cherokee tribe of Native Americans in the United States, Jeep has used the nameplate in some capacity since late 1973 when American Motors Corporation introduced the 1974 model year line.

Common Jeep Cherokee problems
The Jeep Cherokee has been known to have several common problems, primarily related to its engine and transmission.
One of the most prevalent issues is engine stalls, which have been reported in various model years, including the 2015 and 2019 Jeep Cherokee. In the 2019 model, the engine may suddenly shut down while the vehicle is in motion, potentially causing dangerous situations, especially in traffic. This problem is believed to be linked to the Cherokee's defective 9-speed transmission, which can also cause hard shifting, lurching, and wiring harness defects, leading to engine stalls or sudden shifts to neutral.
The 2014 and 2015 Jeep Cherokee models are particularly affected by transmission problems, with issues such as stuck gears, poor throttle response, rough coasting, delayed downshifting, erratic behavior, and even complete transmission failure reported as early as 70,000 miles.
Chrysler has issued recalls for certain 2014 Jeep Cherokee models due to a stuck transmission clutch, which may cause the transmission to shift to neutral unexpectedly, compromising safety on the road.
In addition to transmission issues, there have been complaints about the 2015 Jeep Cherokee's backup sensor alarm, which may beep unexpectedly and continuously until the engine is turned off for a while.
When purchasing a used Jeep Cherokee, it is essential to have it inspected by an independent mechanic familiar with FCA products and consider getting a good extended warranty that will cover possible repairs.
What is a common problem with a Jeep Cherokee?
A lot of drivers recommend older Cherokees because of the wide availability of aftermarket parts and simpler features that make repairs easier. Some of the common issues that plague the Jeep Cherokee include engine stalls, transmission problems, and transmission-related recalls.
What years should I avoid with the Jeep Cherokee?
Regardless of model, it's a good general rule to avoid model years with many customer complaints, mechanical difficulties, and expensive upkeep, just like any other product you buy. Grand Cherokee model years 2011 and 2014 are the most likely to have mechanical flaws and, therefore, some of the worst to buy.
Are jeeps Cherokee reliable?
We expect the 2023 Cherokee will have about average reliability when compared to the average new car. This prediction is based on data from 2021 and 2022 models, plus the Jeep brand scores.
Are Jeep Cherokees known for transmission problems?
The most dangerous transmission problem in the Jeep Cherokee is that it can shift into neutral without warning. The shift can cause the Jeep to abruptly lose power or allow it to roll away if it should be in “Park.” One owner stated that he brought his Cherokee in for service five times for this issue.

Jeep Cherokee 2014
- Date Of Incident: 2024-11-20
- Date Complaint: 2024-11-20
- VIN: 1C4PJMCS4EW
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: 3 times now my car has engaged it's own parking brake and I haven't been able to disengage it. The first and last time it engaged itself in a parking lot after I started my car. The first time I had it towed and the issue had resolved itself before the dealer had a chance to look and since they could not duplicate the issue they let it go. The second time I had it towed to my local mechanic who had to physically disconnect it and reconnect it to get it to disengage. The second time it happened while I was stopped at a stop sign. This third time it engaged at my sons parking school after I started the car. I had it towed to my local mechanic, he disconnected and reconnected and it keeps instantly re-engaging. This is an on-going issue and clearly if it engages itself while running (happened once) is a major safety concern.

- Date Complaint: 2024-11-14
- VIN: 1C4PJMCS9EW
- Components: POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: As of this date: Started about a year ago, when Jeep was over 150,000 miles. When accelerating to turn or from a stop sign or light, vehicle would stall, mimicking the feeling the vehicle ran out of gas. This occurred about once a month. Working at home and not driving my vehicle as much its hard to say if it would have occurred more often. Checked for any codes, none appeared. As I have recently started driving back in the office 3 days a week, the issue of stalling at any given time with no warning began occurring more often. Took it to trusted local service shop, they changed the purge valve pump and gas cap, as they were puzzled on the problem. Did not seem to matter if gas was full, half or under half. The issue occurred twice within 2 weeks. Service shop recommended taking to dealership. Jeep dealership are not aware of any similar issues. Which I found interesting as I researched and found massive posts from various jeep forums as well as this one. They capped off hose to charcoal canister, hoping that would help. And told me its a process of elimination at this point. The next evening it stalled again. I have now parked my vehicle as this has become a safety hazard. Stalling anywhere at any given moment could cause a tragic accident. will be contacting dealership to voice my concern. Hoping for a positive resolution.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-22
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-24
- VIN: 1C4PJLCB9FW
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: UNKNOWN Over the past year, my vehicle has unexpectedly stalled on the highway while traveling at high speeds. This alarming situation has occurred multiple times, leaving me and my passengers in precarious circumstances. Luckily I have been able to avoid hitting other vehicles while moving to the roadside. I believe these incidents are linked to a manufacturing defect within the transmission system, a concern for many Jeep Cherokee owners. For instance, numerous reports on forums like Jeep Forum and NHTSA's website detail similar experiences, with owners describing sudden stalls and transmission issues resulting in dangerous situations. I originally brought my vehicle in on June 21, 2023, where a diagnostic was performed. Jeep recommended repairing the cooling system and changing additional parts, which we did with our trusted mechanic at a cost of $972.37. Unfortunately, the problem of stalling persists. We took the car to the Jeep Dealership and now on October 24, 2024, Jeep has sent me a list of repairs needed totally $9516 to again supposedly fix the issue of the car stalling while driving. The 2015 Jeep Cherokee should now be on the road. I feel strongly that the car should be recalled. Regardless of the fact that the car is no longer under warranty, I have maintained the car with proper maintenence and this should not be happening to any car.

I believe the transmission or gear shift is having an issue. No warning lights go on the dashboard and it will stall while driving on the highway which caused an extreme safety hazard.
Jeep Cherokee 2014
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-10
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-22

The attached documents were sent to Stellantis as a “reimbursement request”, was denied per the attached 10/17 email from Jeep Customer Care. As evidenced by numerous online complaints as well as NHTSA Recalls and class action lawsuits, replacement of the PTU was the result of a faulty design and safety concerns. The Stellantis refusal of my claim for reimbursement is unacceptable. What assistance can NHTSA provide to resolve this matter? Thank you, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

I recently had to find a new car after my Tiguan lease ended. I considered a few options, including the Subaru Outback, Volvo X 40, and a new Tiguan. However, I ultimately decided on the Jeep Cherokee. It felt the most substantial and well-made out of all the options. While the Tiguan was the least expensive option, I found that the Jeep offered more value for my budget. I was pleasantly surprised by all the features included in my lease, such as the Elite Package and cooled seats. The ride is great and the acceleration is impressive. The info entertainment system is easy to use and intuitive, making for a great driving experience. I especially love the Adaptive Cruise Control. Overall, I am very happy with my decision to lease the Jeep Cherokee and have had no problems with it so far.Life changing feature! The stop and go really takes the sting out of heavy traffic. The automatic high beams are amazing. The ride is great; it really takes any size pothole no problem. While it may not have the razor-sharp handling of a BMW, it's much more comfortable. The ride, handling, and acceleration strike a great balance. The lane keep assist is the car's big downfall. It will pull slightly at the wheel for no reason, less on the highway than around town. It feels like you hit a piece of ice. It didn't bother me as much now, but at first, it was annoying as hell. I tried to disable it but couldn't. I just put it on the lowest setting. Hopefully, they will use a lane centering on the next update. The car feels so high-tech; it's quite unexpected. I am so glad I got this Jeep. I would have never considered it if not for the chip shortage. Inventories were starting to get tight, and they had the inventory. I got this lease at such a great deal. I am so grateful as prices are skyrocketing on leases. I am blown away by the luxury driving experience from a Jeep. Who knew!

I am thrilled with this vehicle! It has replaced my Wrangler and although it may not be able to go everywhere the Wrangler can, it is a fantastic compromise. As my age advances, I find it difficult to endure the beating that comes with driving the Wrangler, even on the easiest of trails. However, after several trips to the California desert, I have found the Trailhawk to be both capable and very comfortable off-road, with clearance being the only limitation so far. This vehicle provides huge improvements in comfort, mileage, performance, and technology while giving up some off-road performance.

At 45, I feel really great driving it. I was lucky to have picked one up in 2009 with only 29K miles on it. Even now, at 50K miles, it still looks and drives like new. Whenever the weather is bad, I volunteer to run to the store as an excuse to drive it. I would absolutely love to buy another one someday, but as we all know, that's not going to happen.

I'm so sorry to hear about your Jeep! It sounds like it was a reliable and versatile vehicle that served you well for many years. It's amazing that it was still going strong with 161,000 miles on it! I'm glad to hear that you made it through the accident with only a mild concussion. I hope you find the perfect used Jeep with the 4.0L I6 motor that you're looking for!

We purchased our Trailhawk in January 2014 and fell in love with its design. We have been delighted with its performance so far, having driven 9k miles without any issues. We took it in for the transmission updates, but we never really had any complaints with its shifting. As we are in our late 50s, we had to learn how to drive this new ride, but it has been a smooth transition. Although there is a slight delay in acceleration and when you let off the gas, it is nothing that is hard to adjust to. Overall, we love the truck. It is very comfortable, has everything we wanted, and most importantly, has been very dependable. We have noticed that it never uses the ninth gear, but it still performs well at 65 mph, averaging around 20.8 miles per gallon.

I am absolutely loving this car more and more every time I drive it! While it may not be the best gas saver like my 2020 Sentra, it is definitely more fun to drive. The wind noise on the highway isn't too bad and the drive is nice and smooth, even when passing train tracks. You don't have to slow down at all, which is great! My only complaint is the small infotainment and instrument cluster vehicle information display on the Latitude LUX, which I find a bit unattractive. It only displays information in black and white. Additionally, the forward collision warning/stop device wasn't working at first and displayed a message saying the sensor was blocked and to clean the windshield. However, this issue was fixed by itself soon after. I can't believe this happened on a brand new 2021 car! I already had an appointment to fix this issue. UPDATE: I bought the 2021 Cherokee Latitude LUX brand new in December 2020 and it already has 75k miles on it. However, I have had no mechanical, electric, or transmission issues at all. It gives me 30 MPG now that I've passed 50k miles and there is virtually no wind noise on the highway. This car is truly a wonder and I absolutely love it!

When a vehicle reaches 100,000 miles, it requires some maintenance work. This is completely normal and expected. Tires, shocks, battery, brakes, and other parts may need to be replaced. While electronics can be a bit more delicate, they are still manageable. Unfortunately, the air conditioning coolant has a leak. In my experience with Chrysler vehicles, this seems to be a common issue around the 90,000-mile mark. However, let's not dwell on that. Overall, this is a great vehicle that is fun to drive as an SUV.

I recently purchased a 2020 Jeep Limited with the 4cyl turbo and have been driving it for two weeks. Unfortunately, I have experienced some issues with the car. Initially, I noticed something running under the hood for up to 45 minutes after shutting off the motor. I brought it to the dealer, but they were unable to find anything wrong. However, today my wife pulled into the garage and smoke was pouring out from the grill. Although the car was not overheating, there was a lot of smoke or steam. I have leased two vehicles every three years and have never seen smoke or steam in any of my new cars like this. I plan to take the car back to the dealer on Monday to address this issue.

I am sorry to hear about your experience with your Chrysler vehicle. It is disappointing to hear that they have not been able to resolve the issue with the mold and leak. It is understandable that you feel frustrated with their offer to only provide another Chrysler vehicle at a discount. As a loyal customer for decades, it is disappointing to feel undervalued. Thank you for sharing your experience and warning others to stay away from Chrysler products.

I noticed my trailhawk's hood rattling and lifting off the front stops while driving a few weeks after I got it. I had to stop twice to make sure that the hood wasn't going to pop open. The next day, I went to the dealer and their tech looked at it. They explained that these composite hoods are extremely light and will appear to want to pop open but they won't because the secondary latch will catch it. If that fails, there is a kill switch that will turn the engine off. Although it was a scary experience, I'm glad to know that there are safety measures in place. I'm curious if anyone else has noticed this and how they felt about it.
