Jeep Cherokee 2000 problems
The Jeep Cherokee is a line of SUVs manufactured and marketed by Jeep over five generations.
Marketed initially as a variant of the Jeep Wagoneer, the Cherokee has evolved from a full-size SUV to one of the first compact SUVs and into its current generation as a crossover SUV.
Named after the Cherokee tribe of Native Americans in the United States, Jeep has used the nameplate in some capacity since late 1973 when American Motors Corporation introduced the 1974 model year line.

Common Jeep Cherokee 2000 problems
The Jeep Cherokee 2000 has been known to have some common problems, primarily related to engine issues and minor electrical faults.
- Electrical problems: The 2000 Jeep Cherokee has been known to have some minor electrical faults, such as power window motors and switches that need replacement, and bad multi-function switches. These issues can be frustrating for owners, but they are not typically considered major problems. However, some owners have reported that the engine can stall at idle, which can be a significant safety issue. This can be caused by a marginal battery, which can give the engine management system fits and create stalling. It is a common symptom and can be easily diagnosed with a load test of the battery.
- Suspension and steering issues: Some owners have reported problems with the suspension and steering components of the 2000 Jeep Cherokee. These issues can include worn-out ball joints, tie rods, and bushings, which can affect the handling and ride quality of the vehicle. These issues can be caused by wear and tear and can be easily diagnosed with a visual inspection of the suspension and steering components.
- Interior issues: Some owners have reported problems with the interior of the 2000 Jeep Cherokee, such as a sagging headliner and worn-out upholstery. These issues can be frustrating for owners, but they are not typically considered major problems. However, they can affect the overall appearance and comfort of the vehicle.
In conclusion, the 2000 Jeep Cherokee has some common problems, primarily related to engine issues and minor electrical faults. However, many owners have reported that the vehicle is reliable and can last for many years with proper maintenance. It is essential to address any engine issues promptly and to ensure that the electrical system is in good working order to avoid any significant safety issues. Regular maintenance and inspections can help to identify any potential problems before they become major issues.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

- VIN: 1J4G248S7YC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: After sending my Jeep Grand Cherokee to Pugh’s Service Center in Greenville, NC, in December 2018, because it would turnover, but not start. They replaced the ECM, but had to be taken to the local Jeep dealership for an OE ECM replacement and a crankshaft sensor, in order to get it to crank. Upon getting my Jeep back in March 2019, it ran fine for a few days. Then I went to start it, and it started, but after a few seconds, all of the GAUGES stopped working and all of the WARNING LIGHTS came on. I contacted both Pugh’s and the Jeep dealership, telling me I should just bring it in, to run more diagnostics. The Jeep only has 94,000 miles, and I spent about what the vehicle was worth upon getting it back in March 2019; so I’ve been hesitant on taking it back. There are many other people who have similar issues with the instrument panel gauges and warning lights, from the information I’ve researched online; with no indications of the problem being resolved.

Hi there! The vehicle has 140k miles and everything works perfectly. It starts easily even on the coldest days here in northern Vermont. While it can be a bit of an amusement ride on uneven roads with lots of pitch and yaw, it rides just fine on smooth highways and navigates rough terrain with ease. A rear leaf spring was added to the spring pack that weakened (which is common), and the driver's door hinge pins were replaced (it's a two-door sport). Other than that, there have been no repairs outside of regular maintenance and wear items.

I've always admired the timeless styling of the Jeep Cherokee. The in-line 4.0L 6 engine is incredibly reliable and durable, making it one of the best engines I've ever owned. I feel fortunate to have acquired one from an older couple who took excellent care of it since it was brand new. It's a shame that vehicles aren't made as dependable and easy to maintain as they used to be. With 218k miles on it, my Jeep Cherokee still runs like a dream!
-
These jeeps are fantastic for any road condition and everything in between. They're not too big or too small, and have just the right amount of storage and room. My Jeep drives great and is so much fun. I would buy another one in a heartbeat. It's a shame they don't make them anymore!
-
The Jeep Cherokee is definitely one of the best vehicles ever built.
-
Small enough to fit into any parking spot, yet big enough to tear up any trail. The Cherokee is tougher and more reliable than any vehicle I have owned. Looks good, drives even better.

I bought my Jeep Cherokee six years ago when it had 73,000 miles on it. I absolutely loved the freedom it gave me to go anywhere, on or off the road. Unfortunately, I started experiencing some issues when it hit 100,000 miles. The A/C stopped working and despite multiple trips to the auto shop, I eventually gave up on having it fixed. Then, to make matters worse, the heater stopped working too! Over the past two years, I've had to replace two radiators and even blew a head. Despite all of this, I don't believe that these issues are a result of the build quality. Rather, I think that the previous owner didn't take proper care of the vehicle.

Hind-sight is always 20/20 and I really wish we had listened to the advice of others. Our Jeep has been towed to the dealer multiple times for various problems. It's a shame we don't get frequent flyer miles! While I could list a whole variety of issues, I think replacing a transmission at 31K miles says it all. If you're interested, please contact me and I'd be happy to sell my Jeep to you!

It's affordable, but perhaps not as much as I would have liked. I may have been better off spending an extra $50 a month to get a Blazer. The styling is cool, classic, and rugged, but the ride is rough, the brakes are bad, and it's quite noisy. The overall quality is below average, and I've had to take it in for warranty work 7 times. Unfortunately, the resale value is very low, and I'm having trouble finding a dealership that wants to take another one on their lot.

Your 2000 Jeep Cherokee Classic sounds like an amazing vehicle! Out of the 17 vehicles you've owned, it seems like this one has been the best by far. Although there have been some common issues with the Cherokees such as the front speakers and A/C quitting, and the hood latch rusting out, it's great to hear that it has required almost no maintenance otherwise.
Kyleigh Johnston 2024-06-04
When I purchased the Jeep, I noticed some bad rust on the undercarriage, pitted metal on the frame, muffler, steering arms, etc. It was caused by exposure to salt, even though it was a brand new vehicle! Unfortunately, the dealer and Chrysler refused to do anything about it, stating that it was an acceptable amount. However, I didn't find it acceptable, and neither did anyone I showed it to.
