The Jeep Cherokee is a line of SUVs manufactured and marketed by Jeep over five generations.

Marketed initially as a variant of the Jeep Wagoneer, the Cherokee has evolved from a full-size SUV to one of the first compact SUVs and into its current generation as a crossover SUV.

Named after the Cherokee tribe of Native Americans in the United States, Jeep has used the nameplate in some capacity since late 1973 when American Motors Corporation introduced the 1974 model year line.

Common 1992 Jeep Cherokee problems

The 1992 Jeep Cherokee, while a beloved and capable vehicle, is not without its common problems. Here are some of the issues that 1992 Jeep Cherokee owners have reported:

  • Transmission Range Selector (TRS) Switch Failure: The TRS switch is responsible for controlling the gear selection in the vehicle. When it fails, the reverse lights may not work, and the check engine light may illuminate with code P0705.
  • Exhaust Manifold Leaks: The exhaust manifold can crack, especially at its welding points, leading to a ticking noise while driving, particularly during acceleration. Replacing the exhaust manifold should fix this issue.
  • Ignition Wires: The ignition wires in the 1992 Jeep Cherokee may fail, leading to issues with the engine's ignition system. If the Cherokee has a distributor, replacing the wires and the plug, cap, and rotor is recommended. If the Cherokee has ignition coils, replacing the spark plugs at the same time is advised.

These are some of the most common problems reported by 1992 Jeep Cherokee owners. Regular maintenance, including timely oil changes, can help prevent some of these issues and prolong the vehicle's lifespan.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2004-08-24
  • VIN: 1J4FJ58S1NL
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: I WAS DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE. THE SPEED LIMIT WAS 65. WHEN I GOT TO 60 I NOTICED MY SUV BEGAN TO SHAKE. HITTING A BUMP MOST OF THE TIME STARTS THE PROBLEM. IT VIBRATED SO MUCH AND SO LOUDLY THAT I HAD TO SLOW DOWN TO 55. I TOOK IT TO THE FIRST MECHANIC WHO SAID IT WAS THE "STEERING STABILIZER" IT DID COST ABOUT $150-$300 TO FIX. I CAN'T REMEMBER EXACTLY BUT IT WASN'T CHEAP. IT WORKED FOR AWHILE. I HAVE GONE TO SEVERAL OTHER CAR SERVICE COMPANIES AND THEY HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO PERMANENTLY FIX THIS PROBLEM. I'M AFRAID I WILL LOSE CONTROL OF STEERING. ALTHOUGH THERE IS NO RECALL ON THIS VEHICLE AT THE MOMENT IT SHOULD BE. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY PROBLEM. I'M NOT EXACTLY SURE WHEN THIS STARTED BUT IF I GO OVER 60 THERE IS A 90% CHANCE OF IT HAPPENING. IF I GO OVER 60 AND HIT A BUMP THERE IS A 100% CHANCE OF THIS HAPPENING.

THE FOLLOWING DAY I GOT ON THE INTERSTATE AT 65 TO 70 MPH AND I COULD HEAR A LOUD SLAPPING NOISE AND THE CAR SHOOK. AT HIGH SPEEDS THE TIRES MUST TAKE ON A DIFFERENT SHAPE. WALMART REFUSED ANY CONCESSION SO I'M CONFINED TO SLOW DRIVING UNTIL I CAN AFFORD ANOTHER SET OF TIRES; ANOTHER BRAND THAT IS. MY TIRE LINE IS XTRA-TRAC II (ROMAN NUMERAL 2). YOU DON'T GIVE ME THE OPTION TO SELECT THAT LINE. I CANNOT TELL WHILE DRIVING WHICH TIRE OR HOW MANY TIRES ARE BECOMING DEFORMED WHILE DRIVING. PARKED, THEY ALL LOOK GOOD. *KB

Positive 1992 Jeep Cherokee car reviews

  1. Alec Heaney 2024-11-04

This is a great first-time vehicle! It has lots of power for its size with the I-6 and is known for being very reliable.

  2. Walter Waters 2024-10-28

Congratulations on your new truck! It sounds like you had a lot of fun with your Jeep, but it was time for an upgrade with four kids. The 4.0L HO engine and 5-speed manual made for a thrilling ride, and the unibody construction kept it light and powerful. You even managed to tow a 5,000 lb boat with it! The car was very reliable, and any parts that needed replacing were reasonably priced. While city mileage was okay at about 12.5 - 13.5 mpg, highway mileage was good at about 21.5 mpg. The engine still runs strong, and the transmission has never missed a beat. The clutch was replaced at about 85,000 miles, the exhaust at about 105,000 miles, and the water pump (which only cost $45!) at 110,000 miles.

  3. Mark Kuphal 2024-10-23

I love my Jeep! It has such a great style and is surprisingly comfortable for off-roading. With the 4.0L engine, it has amazing power and can outperform any other SUV from its year range. I even installed a 2

Hello! Thank you for sharing your experience with us. It sounds like you have had some amazing adventures in your Cherokee, and we're glad to hear that it has served you well. As you look for a new vehicle, we hope you find one that will take you on even more exciting journeys. Best of luck!

  5. Mark Erdman 2024-08-23

I purchased my Jeep with 150K miles and have since driven it for an additional 42K miles without encountering any significant issues. Routine maintenance, such as replacing the water pump, radiator, and transmission lines, has been necessary, but the parts are affordable and the vehicle is spacious, making repairs easy. Despite being 15 years old and having had three previous owners, the Jeep still performs exceptionally well. However, due to my upcoming move to Florida and the lack of air conditioning, I have decided to sell it.
