jeep logo

The Jeep Cherokee is a line of SUVs manufactured and marketed by Jeep over five generations.

Marketed initially as a variant of the Jeep Wagoneer, the Cherokee has evolved from a full-size SUV to one of the first compact SUVs and into its current generation as a crossover SUV.

Named after the Cherokee tribe of Native Americans in the United States, Jeep has used the nameplate in some capacity since late 1973 when American Motors Corporation introduced the 1974 model year line.

Common Jeep Cherokee 1999 problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the 1999 Jeep Cherokee, several common problems have been reported:

  1. Electrical Shifting Issues: Owners have experienced unreliable electrical shifting in the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee, leading to transmission failures. Symptoms include jerking, hesitation, and rough shifting. This problem can manifest as warning lights, dead batteries, and instrument cluster stalling. Troubleshooting involves disconnecting the battery, checking fuses, and replacing components like the PCM computer and ignition system.
  2. Leather Dashboard Bubbling: A visible issue reported by owners is the bubbling or wrinkling of the leather dashboard, typically observed around 60,200 miles on average. This problem affects the aesthetics and comfort of daily driving. Resolving this issue involves replacing the affected dashboard panel with a new one.
  3. Unintended Shifting: Another common complaint is unintended shifting in the Jeep Cherokee as it ages. This issue causes the vehicle to jump gears without warning, leading to slipping in and out of gears during driving. To address this, owners are advised to check transmission fluid levels, change oil, and inspect components like the Torque converter clutch circuit and solenoid circuits regularly.
  4. Engine Failures: Owners have reported engine failures caused by heat exposure from the manifold, leading to injector fuel vapor formation and damaged piston plugs. This can result in misfires and engine malfunctions. Resolving this issue involves fitting fuel injector sleeves to lower injector temperature and prevent frequent vaporization, as well as checking and replacing damaged plugs and piston skirts.
  5. Throttle Position Sensor: The throttle position sensor is another common problem in the 1999 Jeep Cherokee. Symptoms include a rough running engine, acceleration hesitation, and hard starting. To address this issue, owners can replace the entire throttle body or just the sensor itself.

These problems highlight some of the key issues faced by owners of the 1999 Jeep Cherokee, ranging from transmission and electrical issues to dashboard and engine malfunctions. Regular maintenance and timely troubleshooting can help mitigate these issues and ensure a smoother driving experience for Jeep Cherokee owners.

This vehicle has some significant issues, including constant 'Death Wobble' and aggravating Crank Position Sensor problems that can cause no-start issues. However, with proper maintenance and repairs, these issues can be resolved and the vehicle can perform well.

This car has lost all of its charm and has died, which is disappointing. However, I am confident that I can find a solution to this problem.

Although this vehicle has had some issues, I can confidently say that it is not the worst I have ever owned. While it has been subject to two recalls and required multiple replacements of the foglamp switch, I have decided not to replace it again. Additionally, the drivers window mechanism failed in January of 2003, when the vehicle was not yet 4 years old. While I have been dissatisfied with the gas mileage, I believe that this vehicle still has some positive qualities worth considering.

In 2005, as a college sophomore, I made a confident decision to purchase a Cherokee in New York, despite attending school in Savannah, GA. I knew I was in for some serious mileage, but after conducting thorough research, I found the perfect vehicle. Over the years, my Cherokee has been through rough roads in the swamps of the deep south and has travelled up and down the east coast at least 10 times, yet it never failed me. Although there were a few minor electrical problems and no CD player, it was still the perfect car for me. Recently, I sold it due to another long trip across the country, but I am confident that I will purchase another Jeep in the future.

The car has experienced several mechanical issues, including multiple sets of rotors needing replacement under normal driving conditions, malfunctioning fog lights and heated seats, and issues with both front and rear cv joints. Additionally, the manifold and steering motor required replacement, as did the washer motor and airbag module (twice). While the car has required regular maintenance in its first year, it is important to note that these issues have been addressed and resolved with confidence.

Positive Jeep Cherokee 1999 car reviews

I hope you're enjoying your Cherokee! It's true that they were one of the last real SUVs and they may not have been the most comfortable ride, but they were definitely utility vehicles. My Cherokee does exactly what I need it to do and I'm happy with it. Plus, Jeeps are easy and cheap to maintain, especially if you use aftermarket replacement parts. If you're looking for a cushy, roomy, nice riding car, a minivan might be a better fit for you. But if you want an SUV, I would definitely recommend a Jeep (except the Liberty).

I absolutely love my Bright Red loaded Cherokee Limited! It has been the best vehicle I have owned to date. I purchased it with 29,900 miles on the clock and it currently has 38,900. Recently, I took it on a 1000 mile round trip to Niagara Falls and the ride was fantastic. The power leather seats were incredibly comfortable and the factory tint on the windows prevented the dark gray seats from heating up too much. Although we only averaged 17.8 miles to the gallon, the truck as a whole more than makes up for the loss in MPG.

Yes, I love it! It's great in the snow and always reliable. The power windows were replaced, but no major problems otherwise. It's fun to drive and has the feel of a car with the room of a wagon.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it back in '99 and it's been a reliable companion ever since. It has over 116,000 miles on it and I haven't had a single issue with it. I absolutely love the 4x4 feature - it can handle any terrain or weather condition with ease. Even 3-foot snow drifts are no match for it! Thanks for letting me share my thoughts with you.

I absolutely love my Jeep! I bought it from the construction company that I work for when it was three years old and the lease was up. It had 60,000 miles on it then, but now it has 185,000 miles as of March 09. I have rarely had any problems with it. It has been all over the beaches of NC and VA and through the snow in PA, and it has handled well in every situation. Other than changing the belts when they get worn and changing the oil faithfully, I don't normally put any money into it. I have had to replace a window motor and brakes once, but that's really about it. My daughter will be 16 in a year, and I plan on handing down this reliable car to her. She can't wait! I wish there was another Jeep that I liked as much as this one that I could replace it with.
